First Hand Civil War Cavalry Experiences
My third Great-Grandfather, Solomon King, was an 18th Pennsylvania trooper in company H; consequently, my opinion may seem a little biased and zealous. This book is not an epic novel. Instead, it's a compilation of experiences and facts pertaining to the 18th Pennsylvania Cavalry. The regiment mustered in 1862 and was kept active until October 31, 1865. A tremendous contribution is credited to Captain Thomas J. Grier. Disciplined, he kept a daily journal beginning November 13, 1862. Given their battle history and trials, writing the journal must have been an arduous burden. Capt. Grier was not long on words but gave enough to lead the reader to seek other sources. Beginning at Camp McClellan and Simmons, the journal takes the reader through training to their first assignment below Robert E. Lee's mansion in Arlington. After a short assignment at the Chain Bridge, they move to Fairfax Co. and encounter the "Gray Ghost" (John Mosby's Rangers). By the summer of 1863, they become involved in the largest cavalry battle recorded. This battle at Brandy Station was a turning point in the war and led to the chase of J.E.B. Stuart around Hanover Pennsylvania. Supplementing the diary, Capt. H.C. Potter gives a battle report in the town, and letters from Capt. J.W. Smith, J. Wilber Shephard, Lt. S.T. Jackman and Lt. W.A. Rodgers give additional details. Commanded by Brig. Gen. Judson Kilpatrick, the regimentparticipates in the Battle of Gettysburg and the pursuit of Robert E. Lee's Army back into Virginia. Maj. William B. Darlington gives his thoughts a month after the battle. Lieutenant Colonel John Phillips' account of the campaign from Hanover to Gettysburg and Hagerstown is a fine addition. An enlisted perspective is always unique, and Pvt. Samuel St. Clair gives his account at Hagerstown. At Germanna Ford, Brig. Gen. Henry E. Davies writes about their division losses here and Brig. Gen. George A. Custer's role. While under Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's command, the 18th Pennsylvania's narrow escape from the Wilderness is described, Brig. Gen. Kilpatrick's raid on Richmond is depicted, and J.E.B. Stuart's fate at Yellow Tavern is determined. J. Andrew Wilt writes about their harrowing experience at St. Mary's Church near Richmond, Virginia. As the war effort decidedly turns toward the Union, Lt. Col. John W. Phillips, prior to his capture, gives an overview of the Shenandoah Campaign with Maj. Gen. Phillip Sheridan commanding. Also, Capt. Grier writes a short expository about Jubal Early's demise at Cedar Creek, Va. Brig. Gen. A.C.M. Pennington's official report is included. While the book is filled with battle accounts, there are some meaningful asides. J. Andrew Wilt writes about a ten to twelve year oldorphan boy named Little Ed who was adopted by the regiment, was outfitted, and fought valiantly alongside the troopers. Brig. Gen. James H. Wilson gives a tribute to the regiment, and Brig. Gen. T.F. Rodenbaugh, their final commander, gives a sketch of activity. The book carries many illustrations, a complete list of battles, and a comprehensive roster with details. Lastly, there's the Gettysburg Big Round Top monument dedication speech given by Capt. Grier and Maj. Phillips in 1889. ... Read more
