Great cookbook for birds. Great recipes for parrots and very good information on what to feed them and also what not to feed them. I highly recommend this book for any exotic bird owner.

This book has good ideas and good intentions. It seems to be geared toward a lot of recipes that include pellets. If there is an ingredient in the recipe that your bird can't eat, (colored pellets, or large amounts of pellets) use your imagination and substitute it for something that your bird likes or needs for vitamins. Good ideas that need to be adjusted for specific parrots. ... Read more

All joking aside, the book is great. I am a novice orno-bird-watching-ologist and the book lays everything out from when and where you might see different types of birds to what kinda feed each bird is attracted to. 5-0 out of 5 stars A must own
I have raised Gouldian Finches and own a Rose Breasted Cockatoo, Umbrella Cockatoo, Love Bird and Conure. This book has been indispensable for all of them. Whenever someone adopts my babies, I have recommended they get this book in order to maintain optimal health for the new family members. I have used the homeopathic, herbal and Bach flower remedies on the various birds and have had good results. My birds are healthier and happier due to the knowledge dispensed in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of them
This is the best very informative, easy read book on birds I have ever read.Every bird owner should have it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative and helpful.....
In HOLISTIC CARE FOR BIRDS, authors McCluggage and Higdon address preventative care as well as spiritual and emotional healing. They begin with a brief overview of `bird keeping' - Different birds have different needs..Not all birds like to be petted while others may become miserable without constant affection. Sometimes the difference is species specific, other times it is related to the bird's treatment by previous owners.

Obvious physical problems may send you scrambling to the vet, but there are remedies you can keep on hand to deal with life's stresses and less serious physical injuries. For example, according to the authors, mild camomile tea in the bird's water bowl offers a soothing aperitif following a bad "out-of-cage" experience with the family dog or as a palliative for feather picking.Aloe juice used to treat human skin problems as well as Vitamin E and C can also be used to address bird wounds inflicted by cage mates.

The authors address a range of treatments for ailments as diverse as sore feet and broken feathers to heart disease. They do not eschew veterinary care, indeed McCluggage is a DVM as well as a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist. Higdon has written a number of books on happy, healthy pets (Lovebirds, Quaker Parrots, etc.). The book includes a section on nutrition, as the best health care involves diet. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best publication on the subject
The Storey guides are the best and informative publications I have bought. Having bought expensive books that said the same thing as the Raising Game Birds: Storey Country Wisdom Bulletin A-93 (Garden Way Publishing's Country Wisdom Bulletins, Raising Animals Series, No a-93)
by Mavis Harperdoes I highly recommend this publication first and foremost. The information is easy to read, illustrations etc easy to follow.Save money as well by putting the money you would have put toward an expensive book on the subject, toward other game bird needs.

Product Description
From two noted experts–the first in-depth book on teaching your bird to talk

Teaching a bird to talk isn’t as difficult as it may seem.In this easy-to-follow guide, avian experts Diane Grindol and Tom Roudybush reveal how you can communicate with your parrot far beyond "hello" and, in turn, understand what your bird is trying to communicate to you.

Teaching Your Bird to Talk compiles an impressive amount of background, training, and research regarding bird vocalizations, walking you step by step through the behavioral mechanics of training parrots to talk (as well as starlings, mynahs, and other birds). Whether you want your bird to mimic words, talk on cue, or have some understanding of what you are saying, this guide shows you the type of training you need to do with your bird. The book also takes a close look at the work of Dr. Irene Pepperberg–the world’s foremost authority in the field of parrot intelligence and trainer of Alex the African Grey Parrot.

  • Identifies which species of bird are likely to talk and which aren’t
  • Explores field research on regional languages and dialects of parrots in the wild
  • Features true stories from owners of talking birds
  • Explains how to handle problems with vocal parrots, such as screaming and using inappropriate language
  • Offers tips on feeding and housing birds, and finding an avian veterinarian

1-0 out of 5 stars I don't think so
Another one of those parrot books and advice that just does not work in the real world.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bird Talk
I was disappointed that it takes two people to teach the bird to talk. I won't be able to use the information in the book. It's a good book, just won't work for me.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good bird info but not a primer
This book provides a wealth of information on birds but the title is a bit misleading. There is only one strong chapter on the "hows" of teaching a bird to talk with understanding rather than simple mimicry. The rest of the book details the funny things and the many things talking birds say(as reported by their owners), bird habits, nutrition, etc.I would have preferred a bit more in the tutorial section.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaching Your Bird to Talk review
I am not quite finished with this book yet, but I am very pleased with the information and how it is presented in this book. I have read several other books on Parrots and this is by far the best one. There is more information than just teaching your bird to talk.
I highly recomment this book to anyone who owns a parrot with the potential to talk!

4-0 out of 5 stars My parrot started to talk !
I waited more than six months after I bought this book to try the techniques inside it before I wrote my review. Although I was using some methods mentioned inside the book but this book encouraged me to keep using them and also adds some amazing methods and ideas that were very helpful, useful and easy to imply. Simply, my old African Grey Parrot started to talk, and that was my fist experience in such thing and I really feel grateful to this book and to the efforts inside it. I am giving four stars since I feel some information are ideas need proves rather than facts. However, aiming to make your African talk, buy this book and be patient.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bird book helps to know your birds
This book was very helpful to learn about the different species of birds that I see in my area. I can look them up & identify the type of bird & what attracts them. I recommend it to anyone who's interested in bird watching.

5-0 out of 5 stars A birder's beginning...
One of the many "Backyard Bird" series, this is a handy little volume for backyard birders.Only 25 birds are described, all of which represent the most common species usually found in urban or suburban backyards, including the mockingbird, scrub jay, house sparrow, mourning dove, house finch, and three species of hummingbirds. In the introduction, the author provides details on bird identification and what "backyard habitat" provides for birds:cover, shelter, food, and water. For each bird, a page-long species account is provided along with a range map and a color photograph.Along with the account we also see a small diagram comparing the size of the bird relative to other birds (i.e., is it hummingbird-sized, or crow-sized?).The end of the book contains several useful discussions regarding birds, such as bird feeder information, bird-feeding preferences by species, predator threats (i.e., cats!), how to call birds in by "pishing," nest box ideas, and what backyard plants are best for attracting birds. The author recommends keeping a backyard bird list and to simply enjoy birding for what it is:a wildlife window and an opportunity to appreciate nature. The book shouldn't be the only field guide available to backyard birders.Within a few months of backyard bird watching, the attentive birder should start seeing species not in the book, and will have to eventually move on to more regional bird guides. But, the volume makes a nice "starter-kit" and is suitable for casual observers or the person that wants to know "what the heck is that bird I always see in my backyard?" ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Backyard Birds of Florida? What about the water birds? Those are the ones I was interested in identifying and learning more about. Most of the birds in the book I already have information about in other bird books. Was very disappointed that the book didn't include at least some of the water birds I frequently see at a small lake near my house. Does have nice photos and is well organized -- just short on Florida birds

3-0 out of 5 stars not good for my needs
I found this book disappointing. While the graphics are clear, the backyard birds I was looking to find were nowhere in the book. I feed several kinds of birds on my balcony daily and the doves and sparrows were the only ones I already knew. Backyard Birds of Florida obviously does not include the birds in South Florida, particularly in Miami. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you raise canaries, you must own this book!
This is the quintessential canary handbook; easy to read and understand, filled with excellent photos and advice, with a good section on genetics if you should choose to breed these marvelous little birds.Vriends is a wonderful writer, well-organized on all the chapters in the aspects of canary breeding; his love of the birds comes through on every page. I have raised canaries for several years, and recommend this book to every person who has ever procured a bird from me---in fact, if they have not had a canary before, I always tell them to buy THIS book first, read it and THEN call me back.It is an invaluable resource tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST Value Ever
Having been involved in care of all sorts of animals for over 40 years and habitually buying books about each, I can say without reservation that this book is the best value for the dollar that I have ever purchased.Matthew Vriends is an internationally recognized expert on the species and he has provided us with an extraordinary handbook. The information, illustrations and photographs exceed anything I have ever purchased in a paperback edition of an animal care book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information provided
Very clear.Covers feeding, housing, breeding, and genetics,as well as common diseases and household medicines that can be used to treat various conditions to which canaries are susceptible. However, an owner who doesnot want to breed might grow tired of the focus on breeding. Also, ownerswith canaries who were not handfed as babies may assume there is somethingwrong with their bird because the book discusses relatively tame handfedcanaries and neglacts state that their tameness and willingness to behandled is not true of birds who were not hand fed.So be aware that ifyour bird does not like to be handled, this is normal. In fact, a non handfed canary who does not struggle when caught may be ill. One final note:Information and medicating are fine, but misdiagnosis can occur,so it isgood to also be have the name of a vet.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best up-to-date canary care book on the market.
Dr. Vriends' book is a comprehensive guide to keeping canaries. He is an expert on aviculture who has published many books on its various aspects. The present book covers canaries of type, color, and song varieties and isrichly illustrated with photographs and drawings which bring the readabletext to life. The information contained in the book is wide-ranging andaccurate.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book!
This is a well-written, information-packed little book. I am a novice pigeon fancier and found a lot of answers to questions I had.Entertaining reading.I highly recommend it to anyone getting into this hobby.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's ok...
Didn't go into the fancy breeds much. Most of the pix were illustrations, would have preferred photos of the real thing. Also didn't go into any of the various pigeon sports besides plain pigeon racing. There's got to be a better pij book out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pigeons (Complete Pet Owner's Manual)
I had searched everywhere; even the Internet, to find information (articles and/or books) about keeping Pigeons as pets after I had rescued, fosterd and then later adopted a Pigeon that could no longer fly well enough to be released back into the wild after being severely injured by a speeding car, with very little result. Even the articles I could find after doing many serches on the Internet only provided generalizations about keeping and raising Pigeons, but did not provide the detailed information I needed about diet, husbandry and health issues. As a bird owner for some 20 years of different species of birds (parrots to doves) Keeping a pigeon was a new experience. I was thrilled to find this book - Pigeons (A Complete Owners Manual) on Amazon.com and even more thrilled when I was able to read and learn from it. This is positively the best book about keeping and rasing Pigeons any aviculturist could possess! It covers virtully everything from building a coop to diet, exercise, training and breeding Pigeons. It even includes chapters on health issues and what to look for in the event of a suspected illness. This book has taught me many, many interesting things about Pigeons the average "bird person" would not necessarily know, and has made the life of the Pigeon I saved...Chance...immesurably better bacause I purchased it. To anyone wanting to learn about keeping Pigeons for show, racing or just as pets, this book is a MUST read! Thanks Amazon.com for helping me and for the truly speedy service in sending the book I'd ordered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Barron's Pigeon Guide
Barron's has since put out a newer, updated version of the 1980s book on pigeons.More color breed artwork as well as some good black and white drawings showing care, lofts, behavior of pigeons.A very good guide for the beginner or pigeon fancier of any age. While it does not cover detailed genetics or medical advice (check your avian vet for that information), it still has its place in every bird lover's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and very thorough
This is the 6th book I've read about lovebirds, and my favorite one.It has alot of history on the birds, and also talks about training them, how to handle them when they first come home, diseases, and how to feed them and even a chapter on breeding.Very complete, and has so many pictures that it makes it hard not to read.I recommend it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough general review
The book has some basic review of lovebirds but fills the rest of the book with explanations of genetics and the mutations and pictures of all the lovebird mutations. It wasn't particularly what I was looking for.I wanted to know their habits, personalities, etc. as I was not looking to breed lovebirds.

The book I received has all the information I would ever hope to need. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Backyard Birds
Great book, I use it often and recommend it to anyone wanting to know what kind of bird they see.

4-0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this book!
I really enjoyed reading this book.

The author, Carol Frischmann has a great way of dividing the birds by habits or activities, which makes it easy to find the bird by watching what it is doing such as clinging to a tree or mostly on the ground.

For each of the 50 birds listed, she lists birds that it might be confused with due to similarities and indicates the differences that will help you identify the bird you are watching. She has also included pictures of these birds and lets the readers know where in North America that these birds can be found.

The author gives ideas on making your yard bird friendly and how to attract the species of birds you are interested in.

This is a great book for someone just starting out in birdwatching or birdfeeding that can get the whole family involved. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Did the job
Don't know if experts agree, but for me it served the purpose well during my 2 weeks in Argentina

3-0 out of 5 stars Adequate guide of all birds but only average illustrations
Basics: 2003, 15th edition, softcover, 341 pages, 256 color plates, 975 species, range map for each bird

First published in 1987, this is a brief, concise identification guide covering all of Argentina, Uruguay, and the Falkland Islands.

There are 975 species illustrated, with 3-4 on each page. The majority of the birds are illustrated with multiple views (e.g., perched vs. flying; dorsal vs. ventral) and are accompanied by a very short (20-60 words) physical description of the bird.Only the minimum of text is given to range or habitat - typically only a dozen words.

The artistic quality is decent but not great. The physical structure of the passerines is captured with better realism than other groups such as the gulls, terns, shorebirds, ducks, or petrels. These latter groups have misproportioned wings, bills, chests, or length-to-width ratios.Additionally, similar species (e.g., elaenias, flycatchers, furnarids, etc.) will expose the limitations of the minimal descriptions, small-sized paintings, and average detail.

The color reproduction is much better in the 2003 and later editions than in the books printed up through the mid 1990s.The earlier editions have muted or washed out colors on a thinner paper that allows birds from the other side to bleed through. The new books have sharper edges to the illustrations and are on thicker, glossy paper.

The range maps are tiny at 1x2cm; however, they do effectively illustrate the generalized range of the birds.

Heads-up:This book is the original source used to create four other scaled-down books that use the same paintings, text, and maps. They're mini-clones. Owning this one book means you own all four of the other books, other than 60 species added to the newer Paraguayan guide.

If you're going to the Patagonia region, I recommend you also take the Chilean guide by Jaramillo and/or the Birds of Patagonia guide by Couve. The illustrations are superior in Jaramillo's book.Couve's book, even with photographs, is also better. And, text is more useful.

This book is available in both Spanish and English.

I've listed several related books below...
1) Birds of Patagonia, Tierra Del Fuego and Antarctic Peninsula by Couve
2) Birds of Chile by Jaramillo/Burke/Beadle
3) Las Aves de Chile by Martinez/Gonzalez (ISBN 9568426000)
4) Birds of Southern South America and Antarctica by de la Pena
5) Las Aves del Uruguay by Gore/Gepp
6) Birds And Mammals of the Antarctic, Subantartic And Falkland Islands by Todd
7) Falkland Islands Birds by Woods
8) Guide to Birds of the Falkland Islands by Woods

4-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous, considering the options
This book served me well in Patagonia, Buenos Aires, and Iguazu Falls.

Weaknesses: It's a bit big and bulky to easily bring along.Substantively, this book could be improved with larger maps and pages comparing similar species. With the biodiversity of this area, perhaps the only solution is to split the book in two.

Strengths: Complete, good index, names of species in both English and Spanish.

Given the alternatives, I'm still quite pleased that I bought and used this book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A sad commentary on book publishers
People are clamoring to learn more bout nature, and often begin with birds in their back yard. Publishers have used that fact as a vehicle to make money. Unfortunately, these kinds of books are often erroneous and misleading. When I looked at the list of birds chosen for Illinois, I was stunned. Sharp-shinned Hawk was in the list and yet the most common back yard raptor is the Cooper's Hawk. That is true throughout the state. These birds look very similar, so now anyone who sees a Cooper's Hawk and has this book will think it's a Sharp-shinned Hawk. The cover of an Eastern Bluebird is so misleading. You rarely find those birds in your back yard unless there are bluebird boxes nearby and you live in the country. Many examples like this exist throughout the book.

Most books like these are ignored by birdwatchers today and only purchased by beginning birders. They begin their birding adventure with wrong information, which saddens me. How difficult would it have been to search for someone who actually knows Illinois birds and which birds appear in back yards the most and pay a little bit to edit the book?

As a writer of books on birds and editor for several birding magazines who wants to open the beginner's eyes to the wonders of nature, I find books like these to be more than disappointing. I'd advise beginning birds to seek out local bird clubs and get recommendations for which to books to buy, and accompany them on their many often-free bird walks.

2-0 out of 5 stars Birds in the backyard in Illinois
Not very informative for identification of backyard birds.pictures are too few and not representative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Happy to find great Kindle Bird book
OK, you birders! The Backyard Birds of Illinois is not in color, but I've found this book well worth the money. The pictures are actually good (sure, I'd prefer color) but, by golly, this works!!

I'm very happy to have a usable, and enjoyable bird book on my Kindle2 ! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars ah...no
My 8 year old daughter gave this to me for Christmas. I've kept chickens for many years. I don't believe the writers of this book know what theyre talking about. When I read that the authors worked for a company that sold henhouses, it made perfect sense. Anyway, if you really want information on chickens, buy the American Standard of Perfection and/or The Beginners Guide to Raising and Showing Chickens (DVD..its awesome)- both available from the American Poultry Association website.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chickens!
I learned a lot about chickens from this book -- very informative, great pictures of different breeds of chickens, pictures and info about chicken coops, feeders, etc., lots of tips and information about how to care for your chickens -- this is a book I will go to a lot.Well written, I enjoyed it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful beginners book
I know absolutely nothing about keeping chickens, so this book helped me alot.It is full of detailed facts about anything you would ever need to know about owning and keeping a flock of chooks in a productive and happy environment.Great for beginners like me!

4-0 out of 5 stars good for beginners
This is a cute little book, but a very slim volume indeed. I've been considering getting some pet chickens for the backyard but I don't want to do it for some time (I want to wait and see how the whole bird flu thing plays out), so this was a fine introduction for me. It covers the basics of feeding, cleaning up after, and maintaining a home for your chickens. I have a better idea now of what kind of effort will be involved in keeping a few hens, how many eggs I can expect, and what kind of modifications the backyard will need. But I don't think you can rely on this book alone if you are already serious about adopting some chickens and need a thorough reference volume. There is very little information here about looking after the birds' health, for instance, and they only give information about a handful of breeds.

Note: this book is written by the makers of the Eglu, which is a pre-fabricated plastic chicken coop for people who just want 2 or 3 chickens as pets. The writers do not identify themselves this way, but I have checked the Eglu website, and the same bearded guys appear on it. To their credit, they discuss how to clean and care for traditional wooden coops as well. But this book also comes free with any purchase of an Eglu. So if you think you might get an Eglu, you might as well not buy this book now since you'll get it for free later.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
This is an excellent book if you are looking to have just a few chickens in your back yard for eggs and/or are a beginner. It also shows how chicken keeping has moved into the 21st century with the wonderful Eglu, as well as showing the different types of chicken housing available.Perfect and well recommended. ...
