5-0 out of 5 stars bird book
This item was purchased as a Christmas Gift for someone who owns a bird.I can say it arrived in a timely manner and would deal with this seller again.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Click that does the Trick
Excellent book. Very easy to follow instructions on training parrots to do tricks. Well worth the money. Here's hoping I can follow through with my training techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
This is an excellent book for the beginner to expert parrot owner. It breaks down fun behaviors in to easy to understand steps. A fantastic resource for any parrot owner who is looking to enrich their parrot's life and build a trusting bond with their parrot through training. This is a book that I regularly recommend to my clients.

4-0 out of 5 stars Have Fun Clicker Training Your Bird
Clicker training all sorts of different animals has become very popular over the last few years. There are several books out on clicker training dogs, but The Click That Does The Trick by Robin Deutsch give instructions and ideas for clicker training birds.

Robin starts off with the basics - understanding your bird, how birds may interpret the training process and how to use the clicker in training.

Robin indicates that the first step is to condition your bird to the clicker. After that you can start training simple tricks. Robin gives several suggestions for tricks and for each one she indicates how easy or complicated it is as well as the size of bird that it will work best for.

When first introducing a new trick, Robin tells us that each small step must be rewarded. She stresses that it is very important that every training session ends on a happy note.

Some of the tricks require props, so Robin then gives instructions on how to make these props.

Time and patience are a requirement whenever you set out to train your bird. If you have the time and patience and want to spend some quality time with your bird, you will find great ideas to help you in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Walks the reader through a step-by-step process with explicit instructions and full-color photographs
The Click That Does The Trick is an easy-to-use guide especially for exotic bird owners looking to train their pets to perform a wide variety of tricks, using a clicker as a training tool. From simple tricks such as extending or flapping wings, to more advanced or prop-related tricks such as playing dead in the owner's hands or ringing a bell, to advanced tricks like riding a scooter or using props to perform imitations of popular sports, The Click That Does The Trick walks the reader through a step-by-step process with explicit instructions and full-color photographs. The Click That Does The Trick emphasizes that exotic birds, from parrots are not fully domesticated animals like modern cats and dogs, and cannot be handled in precisely the same way due to their very strong natural instincts. Training must never force or frighten the bird, should be kept fun, and not all birds are suited to perform all tricks. A final section aids the reader in creating bird-sized props for the more elaborate prop-based tricks. Highly recommended for any bird owner interested in becoming better acquainted with his or her pet through training, and possibly even giving small performances to delight friends and family.

3-0 out of 5 stars Review of variety of birds in book
I was disappointed that there were not as many familiar as what I would consider familiar.I guess everything is relative and I should have selected a book with a wider variety of birds in it as the ones listed do not cover all that we have in our backyard in western New York.

3-0 out of 5 stars Shabby photos and limited selection
It's a good basic book, but the pictures are a little amateur and some of the angles the birds are taken at make identification difficult. There are many birds missing in this book. I have spotted a few new guys in my yard and have not been able to find their counterpart in this guide. The descriptions of the birds' behaviors and habitats is good as well as the food they prefer. The binding is shabby and the book feels like it will lose its pages if I use it too much. Overall it's a good starter, but I feel like I need to keep looking for a better guide. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars dissappointing
This book is really only a small bird species guide. It really doesn't tell how to care for birds much at all. If you want a small reference manual for caged bird species then this book is for you. If you want a bird care guide, look elsewhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good one for the collection
Informative and a nice quick referance book to have, good value and well presented.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good details with pictures
This book has easy to understand literature and has plenty of pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars A vast well of information on different bird species!
As a Veterinary Technician, bird breeder and bird enthusiast,I highlyreccomend this book to anyone interested in bird keeping. It is not limitedto the normal birds as you might find in aviculture, as it has sections onwild birds, and birds of prey. It has 8 sections high-lighting thedifferent families of birds, then breaks that down species by specie. Ithas a nice intro to bird keeping, housing, basic care and diet. I wouldhave liked to see more info on manufactured parrot diets, but the authordoes have illistrations showing different seed diets available. In thebirds section, this manual REALLY shines! it gives easy to understandsymbols for at-a-glance comparisons to other birds. Some of these are: easeof care, size, noise level, aviary type, temperment, and basic breedinginfo. The photos of the birds are breath taking, and the book boasts over200 of them! The last section deals with disease and first aid, a topicwhich would be a manual on its own, and the book gives good information inan easy to understand way. It's also a nice high quality soft cover book, that you can return to over and over. A must while at the bird show! ... Read more

Product Description
Slim and affordable, FEEDER BIRDS OF EASTERN NORTH AMERICA features Roger Tory Peterson's classic art in a larger format designed especially for the eighty million North Americans who watch and feed birds. This easy-to-use, at-a-glance guide simplifies identification by including only the birds that frequent feeders. And to make it even more convenient, the most commonly seen birds come first, followed by those that are harder to identify or that rarely visit feeders. Range maps, descriptions of birds and foods that attract them, and illustrations are on facing pages, so identification is fast and easy. The brand-new introduction covers important bird-feeding topics, including types of feeders and where to place them, birdbaths, kinds of food and when to feed, plantings that attract birds, and solutions to problems with squirrels and cats. A handy quick-reference list tells what kind of food each species prefers, and a feeder checklist provides a record of birds as they are seen. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars great
i got this book for my father-in-law who is SOOOOO hard to buy for.he watches and takes care of birds and he LOVES this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for beginners
This thin, well illustrated paperback is printed on heavy glossy stock that reproduces the vivid colors and fine details of the birds. It is too big to fit in a pocket(6.5"by 10.75")and the use of large type and range maps leaves no room for written descriptions. Contains good additional information on types of feeders and feed, common problems and a bird checklist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just What I Needed
This is the prototypical Peterson guide, but for those of us who have birds coming to our backyards.I am relatively new to birding, so I was looking for a field guide written to be used by everyone. It has what you need to know about feeding birds, as well as much information on the different species, their food preferences, range, etc.The color plates are what you would expect from a Peterson guide.I would highly recommend it to those whose birding endeavors start in their own backyards.Happy Birding!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference
My wife and I have this book.True, it could be a little larger, but it will fulfill most peoples' curiosity of what to call the birds at their feeder.

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect for the amateur
Ordered this after reading all the online reviews...turned out to be perfect to place by our kitchen window as a ready reference guide to the multitude of winter guests just outside.Pictures are easy to follow, the book adds to the fun of winter feeding. No, not a professional or in-depth resource, but great fun for those of us who want a handy, easy to read guide. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute "must-have" for any young child interested in owning a bird.
Twitter and Tweet: Bringing Home a Bird is more than a children's picturebook - it's an extremely basic primer about the responsibilities and joys of owning a bird for a pet. Different birds have different requirements (parakeets and cockatiels like people but need a lot of attention, while finches and canaries are easy to keep but don't like to be touched). All pet birds need to have their cage cleaned often, a healthy diet preferably supplemented with fresh fruits and vegetables, and regular veterinary checkups. Twitter and Tweet follows a young girl named Erin who befriends her pet parakeet and diligently takes care of him. The final two pages offer fun facts about parakeets and their life cycle. An absolute "must-have" for any young child interested in owning a bird.

Product Description
This is a construction manual intended for both buddingnovices and experienced bird breeders alike. Comprehensively writtenand professionally illustrated, the book is loaded with constructiondetails, diagrams and pictures, material lists, insulating andfinishing techniques and tips, environmental concerns, simple step bystep instructions and, essentially, everything you need to know aboutbuilding everything you need for your birds.

Every plan and construction detail is compiled from years of hands onexperience by the author in the raising and breeding of birds rangingfrom finches, canaries and larger softbills to most of the hardbillsincluding (but not limited to) parakeets, budgies, and cockatiels, onup to amazons, cockatoos, macaws, and so on.There are projectsranging from simple houses, cages, breeding and nesting quarters tosmall, medium, large and grand scale aviaries, all designed anddetailed with both the beginning hobbyist and serious fancier, alike,in mind.

Because many of the aviary designs are based on modular construction, they contain the flexibility to start small and expand or start bigand go even bigger. The material & costs have been consideredcarefully, and the information contained in the book will allow anyoneto calculate exactly what is needed before starting actualconstruction. This makes it possible for the builder to contactmaterial suppliers in his/her local area, obtain prices, and, ifnecessary, scale back the design to meet the current budget (and makeplans to expand in the future). The designs require inexpensive,non-specialized, easy to obtain materials assembled in astraight-forward manner with the minimum tools, and give you strong, durable housing that you can be tailor-made for a specific breed ofbird or modified as needed.Included also are construction plans forfeeders, waterers, nesting humidifiers, hospital quarters, shippingand carrying cages, electrical wiring, plumbing and ventilation plansfor the aviary, plus a host of other ideas, construction tips andgeneral information seldom found in other bird publications.

Copyrighted and published by the author in 1973, the book has soldover 20,000 copies worldwide through the years.Although thematerials were reviewed and updated in 1996 to ensure up-to-dateinformation, the content has remained the same. While the book waswritten for aviculturists, permission was granted in 1990 to aninstructor at University of California Berkeley to use excerpts fromthe book in a class on general construction. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars If you've got only one bird, look elsewhere
This is not for the do-it-yourselfer who wants to build a cage for his small parrot in the living room. It is for folks who want to build the equivalent of chicken coops in their back yards. I learned more about parrot toys searching the Inet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, easy and brilliant!
I waited a long time to get this book and it was worth every moment. The designs are well thought out and easy for even the mechanically challenged to understand. The author has devised an aviary/cage system that can be increased or decreased at will, by adding or subtracting carefully yet simply designed panels. Each panel fulfills a particular function of the whole to form the basic unit and you can add unlimited units to form your ideal facility. This information is timeless and I am very pleased.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good plans for modular building
This book lays out a good set of plans for starting small and working your way up to as large a breeding operation as you like.I am adept at building small animal pens, and I've been doing so for several decades, on a hobby basis.I was still impressed with the simple brilliance of this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for the average suburban hobbyist
Potential purchasers of this booklet should be aware that the author is very serious about his birds. What he considers a "quite small" aviary, "for the aviculturist who has only restricted land area for his hobby", measures 11 by 16 feet. A "fairly large" one is 38 by 24 feet, complete with concrete foundation, plumbing, heating, electric lights, and 12 foot ceilings.
If, like me, you are looking for ideas for a small backyard aviary for a few canaries, you should look elsewhere. This publication contains plans for only 6 aviaries. Four are far too large for the average suburban lot, unless you are willing to knock down your house first, and the other two are so rudimentary that plans are hardly necessary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional plans, better than what I expected.
I needed a means by which to build aviaries for my birds.I have built one out of the book, and it is great.I'm most impressed with the bird "hospital" cage..It works exactly as described. My first impression when I received the book was not that great. The drawings were clear, directions clear, but I guess on some level I expected something more than what looked like a college study packet from Kinko's.The designs in this book and the subsequent modifications I've made to them to fit my needs have been outstanding. One needs only a modicum of building expertise, a knucklehead can put the designes together.Highly recommended...again, this is coming from someone who has actually built items off the plans in the book. It's not a glitzy book, but doggon functional. ... Product Description

Observing birds often raises many intriguing questions. Such as what is the incubation time for those robin eggs sitting in the nest above the porch light? What kinds of flowers attract humming birds? What are the migratory distances of various species? What are the major causes of bird deaths?

The Bird Almanac is an invaluable resource, impressive in scope and depth and complemented with tables and illustrations. This Second Edition has been reformatted for easier use and now features quick-find tabs and an index.

The first section of the book comprehensively covers the history, biology and behavior of birds. Bird physiology, biological systems and anatomy are explained in easy-to-understand terms and annotated illustrations.

Other topics include:

  • Fossil history of birds
  • Reproduction and mortality
  • Threatened and endangered species
  • Major birding festivals and competitions
  • How to attract specific species to the backyard
  • Extensive resources for bird-lovers including the top birding locations in America
  • Birding code of ethics

The second section consists of an authoritative world checklist of bird species. The birds are organized by taxonomic order and listed by common and Latin name.

The valuable information in The Bird Almanac fills in the gaps in knowledge of even the most seasoned birder.

3-0 out of 5 stars Parrot Prose Suffers Clipped Wings
PARROTS AS A NEW PET is a useful, if not terribly inspiring book. The prose is utilitarian; you read what the writer views as the essential facts, but you don't get any sense of excitement about having a parrot as a pet.You think, a parrot as a pet? Cool!Pirates!Talking birds! That sounds like fun!Yet reading this book makes you think a little more about getting a dog.

So if the book has many of the basic facts that a new or prospective parrot proprietor would want, then what could the author have done to make this book better?

I would have had several suggestions as an editor:

(1) Have some fun with the topic!Tell us what's great about having a parrot as a pet!
(2) Leave the scientific (Latin) names for the index.
(3) Re-order the chapters: tell us about the various kinds of parrots ("Parrots for Beginners") before you tell us about how to buy a bird ("Stock Selection").Give us the overview of parrot raising ("The Pet Parrot") before going to the specific topic chapters like "Feeding" and "Breeding."
(4) Arrange the illustrations so that they're adjacent to the relevant sections of the narrative.
(5) Finally, be frank. Is my house going to be full of bird feathers and poop?

If you're interested in raising a parrot as a beginner, and you don't need to be inspired to be a parrot owner, this book might serve your needs for general information.

Product Description

Long before Dolly the Sheep or bioengineered corn, there was the Red Canary-the first organism to be manipulated by genetic technology, back in the 1920s. The effort to produce a red canary invoked all of the deep issues that troubled genetic engineering decades later: the nature of genes and how they work, the specter of eugenics, and the relative roles of nature and nurture in determining what an organism is. Behavioral ecologist Tim Birkhead describes how a sweet-voiced green bird discovered by Spanish explorers in the 1300s became a craze in Renaissance Europe, how breeders gradually turned its green plumage to yellow, and how a pair of German scientists used the first bit of gene technology in the 1920s to produce an almost-red canary. But the true red canary would not come until the 1960s, when British scientists successfully bred one, and genes alone would not be sufficient to create one. A Brand New Bird is a compelling tale of a fascinating episode in the history of genetics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Now I want a canary
An excellent book that I had trouble putting down. When I was finished, I wanted a canary. I loaned the book to a student, and when she gave it back I asked her what she thought of it. Her first response? "Now I really want a canary!" It's a fascinating book on the history of songbirds, their influence on culture, canary breeding and genetics. I highly recommend this book. When you're done, you'll want a canary, too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Book Review
Sometimes more is less. That is how I felt about this book. Mr. Birkhead's entertaining story on how two German bird lovers attempt to create a red Canary would have made a perfect long (maybe two part) magazine article. But instead he chose to write this book.
Birkhead tells the story of how, back in the 1920's, Hans Duncker and Karl Reich conducted experiments with Red Siskin and Canary hybrids with the goal of transferring the Siskins red plumage genes into the Canary.
In addition to telling the details of the creation of today's Red-factor Canary, Birkhead gives the reader much insight into the history of bird keeping and breeding in general. For example, the reader learns the importance of German aviculture in creating different cage bird varieties; The history and evolution of other Canary breeds; Insight into how mutations occur and are perpetuated by animal breeders.
I am recommending this book to all bird breeders of different mutations. The book would be an appropriate addition to a Red-factor Canary breeder's library. The book should be interesting to anybody interested in how different breeds occur and are perpetuated by animal breeders.

5-0 out of 5 stars A FASCINATING ACCOUNT OF CANARY BREEDING!
This book is fantastic!! I couldn't put it down. It's not just about developing the red factor canary as one might think from the title. It is a history from the beginnings of canary keeping, Victorian times, and before, and up to the present in Germany, England, France, all over the world. You can read a thousand books on canaries and not have a fraction of the information here with truth and clarity. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in bird history, cage bird breeding and keeping of canaries and finches. Tim Birkhead does an excellent job of telling the story and did a tremendous amount of research to present this fascinating true history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tim Birkhead (2003): A Brand-New Bird
"A Brand-new Bird" is the entertaining story of how two German bird lovers spent most of their spare and life time experimenting to create a red canary. Hans Duncker (1881-1961) and Karl Reich (1885-1970) had in common a keen interest in bird breeding. Duncker, however, had been the more academic of both and is considered as one of the first avian geneticists. Reich on the other hand had highly praised skills in rearing and cross-breeding captive birds. He had been one of the very few breeders holding a strain of canaries singing Nightingale songs. Both conducted many experiments to hybridize Red Siskins and canaries for getting the formers "red-plumage-genes" into a canary brood. In the end they actually never succeeded beyond an orange plumage of their canaries, and it was later up to the Englishman Jack Swift to breed a truly crimson red canary. Nevertheless, Duncker and Reich did some amazing pioneer work towards the understanding of inheritance in birds.
Besides the main story Tim Birkhead skilfully draws a historical overview on bird catching and bird song contests, explains the etymology of bird trappers' jargon, gives many details on the early domestication of canaries, illustrates pre-war Germany, but also analyses well Duncker's involvement in Nazi thoughts and Eugenics. The book is well and thrillingly written. One actually wonders how so many facts and different aspects were possible to be included without loosing the red line towards the climax at the end of the book. This is a truly entertaining and informative book not only for bird breeders, ornithologists, geneticists and academics, but also for anybody with an interest in human culture and time history. It also remains the only modern book so far to stress bird keeping and its major influence on the understanding of ornithology and general biology, respectively.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very informational...
... in under 100 pages!
I wish it had gotten more in depth on variously commonly kept species, and gotten more in depth about breeding...
This is a great introductory book on how to set up your aquarium for seahorses and gives a decent overview of feeding and nutrition. Supplement this book with more species specific information, which can be found online in the various forums about seahorse keeping.

3-0 out of 5 stars Alright
This book is very small. It gives a brief description of each of the major breeds of seahorses.I was hoping for more specific and detailed information for those of us who want to learn to raise them. You also definately need an additional saltwater aquarium book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good info!
I've always thought seahorses were unique and would like to learn to care for them and set up my own aquarium. I never realized how many different breeds there are! This book gives a lot of information about how to care for seahorses and equipment you need. It also talks about their different habits and how to get the most out of your pet. It doesn't give a whole lot of information on caring for your salt water acquarium. It seems it's for people who already know the basics, even though it gives you good information on how to care for your seahorses in the saltwater tank.If you don't know a lot about saltwater acquariums (like me) I would suggest buying this book along with Saltwater Acquariums for Dummies. But all in all it is a good book! ... Read more

Product Description
For sixteen years, author and photographer William Burt has been on an uncommon mission. Every spring and summer since 1984, he has been in pursuit of the toughest of subjects:twenty of the least known, almost mythically elusive North American birds. Burt spent weeks in the field at a time, employing his own hand-built equipment and often revisiting sites, year after year in certain cases, to get the pictures he wanted. The end result is this collection of stunning photographs of these birds in the wild and the engaging stories behind capturing the images. This book contains over fifty remarkable photographs of these camera-shy birds. Additionally, it contains an appendix of thumbnail sketches about each of the birds featured in the book:where they can be found, their markings, and other unique characteristics. Rare and elusive Birds of North America is a wonderful addition to the libraries of serious and armchair birders alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not only pictures of elusive birds, but an adventure to boot
Taking picture of the most rare and shy birds in North America is not an easy tasking, not even for an avid birder and expert in the field. Well, William Burt is an expert in the field, and it took him over 10 years of hard work to research, track down, and photograph America's most elusive birds. Burt has not only delivered a full package of top quality photographs, but he has written an excellent story of his episodes of wandering through endless praries and dark swamps to find these birds. For anyone who loves birds, or loves an adventure, this book is a must.
