4-0 out of 5 stars Some Outdated Information, but Some Good Information too.
This book is obviously dated as it was written back when wild caught birds were available due to the fact that domestic raised birds were difficult to find. Annette, therefore gives information on taming a frightened bird instead of on a new baby African Grey Parrot loving to be cuddled.

She provides good information on the need for proper sized cages & play areas as well as information on making your bird's own climbing structure.

She has listed a good selection of foods to feed your bird, although there is no mention of a pelleted diet, which has now become a good basic staple in many birds' diets.

She has a section on diseases & how to keep your bird healthy with good information for you to follow.

The section on Understanding African Gray Parrots is very thorough and informative. This section, combined with the good information in several of the other sections, outweigh the dated information in a couple of the other sections of the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Annette Wolter, African Grey Parrots
The publications (books) will be rated as soon as I have read them 2 times. However I would like to write an ordinary paper for publication in a well recommended international journal.

Can you recommend one? Or shall I surch for it myself?

The topic should include: How to bye an African Grey. Do not mix up parrots and dogs. Dogs, the humans establichedcontact with14.000 B.C. (Boessneck, 1985). Coresponding time for parrots is 200 years. Education of dogs is based on punischment/reward. That does not work on parrots. The parrot indetifies the punisher as a hawk or an other kind of predator.

Just a first idea of the content for a short publication from a beginner i this "field of science". Time for sending the paper to referees approx, April-01.

I am a professor in metallurgy since 1983 (metals forming) and have written written other kinds of articles outside my professional discipline( Fish for aquarium, "Tropheus" from the lake of Tanganyika in Africa)

So I am not a beginner in writing

2-0 out of 5 stars OUT OF DATE INFOMATION!!
This book has some good info if you dig really deep and know what you are looking for. It talks about things to do to your AG that are out of date, and could be bad to your birds health. It also speaks of taking the birds out of the jungle, which does not happen very much any more, if at all. If you want a good book about african greys, look at the copyright date, it says a lot.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, BUT......
I found that there was a lot of good information in this book, HOWEVER,the author speaks about the bird being "captured from the jungle"and brought into a domestic situation.I CAN NOT stress how much that thisis the absolute WRONG way to obtain ANY bird. When purchasing AfricanGrey's (and any other animal for that matter) make absolute CERTAIN that itcame from a domesticated breeder, and NOT from the wilderness.

5-0 out of 5 stars looking for this book in spanish
if you could direct me in the area of a author who writes about the african gray parrot in spanish, version i would be most thnkful ... Read more

Product Description

You love your pet bird, even when he misbehaves, but how can you train him with compassion? Birds off the Perch proves that rewarding good behavior is kinder and more effective than traditional discipline through punishment. This revolutionary approach combines the expertise of an animal behaviorist, a companion parrot consultant and a veterinarian who use "family therapy techniques" -- such as learning to respect the bird's boundaries and viewing sibling rivalry in a broad, environmental context -- to help you change the mischievous behavior of domesticated birds, including:

• Biting or aggression • Screaming • Sibling/bird rivalry

• Jealousy toward its human flock members, and • Feather plucking

With additional chapters on choosing the right species for your family, breeding behavior and the appropriate medical care for your bird, Birds off the Perch is the only guide you'll need to keep your pet birds healthy and happy. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars My bird is not a dog
With each new point, the author brought up what a dog would do in the same situation. It became an irritation to read the book. The training explanations and examples were the best part of the book. The book explained behavior traits for birds species. I was looking for information on how to control an out of control bird.I would recommend a book by Nikki Moustaki "Outta Control Bird."It presents simpler and clearer solutions for behavior problems that the bird owner can use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Companion Parrots
I agree with the other reviewer, that this book provides excellent advice on how to live with a companion bird, and that the book is well written. The authors are clearly well knowledged and review all facets of the different types of birds, which should be thoroughly reviewed before you purchase: playfulness, loudness, availability, size, care requirements, and whether the types are recommended for experienced or for beginners only. One of the things I especially enjoyed is that they did not say, like many books do, that every bird is perfect for every person or situation. They gave realistic examples of some of the harder aspects of living with companion parrots and try to emphasize that it is a life decision to purchase a large parrot, because it is a lifelong responsibility.Personally my lifestyle would not allow me to have a large companion parrot anyway, but if I were considering the idea, this book would have provided a well-needed reality check.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wish I had this earlier!
I got this a year after having my bird, and I wish that I had it from day one. The book offers great advice on how to live well with a compainion bird.

It is written in a straight forward manner, and even gives examples of birds that they have worked with. There is also a list of birds and what personality traits they have. This is a good book to get when making a choice to get a bird, it will help you be prepared to bring your bird home, and it will help you get the kind of bird best suited to your situation and lifestyle. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars a good start
I think the other reviewers have been a bit harsh. The book is a good resource. It gives general information on a variety of common birds. I think it would be particularly helpful to those new to birdkeeping. It has detailed instructions on cage selection, breeding information, and first aid.P.S. ask your vet about grit

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but not good enough
I liked this book because it had a lot of info but and neat bird breeds. But when I was looking for some info on a VERY common bird it wasn't there. If you just want the general info this is great but not if your'e lookingfor what kind of bird is right for you. And some of the info is out ofdate. it says you should use grit and you SHOULD NOT USE GRIT WITH YOUBIRDS!

2-0 out of 5 stars A basic, informative guide

My daughter is saving her money up to buy a Cockatiel, so she got this book and read it. She loved it! She says that it gives info on Parakeeks,Cockatiels,Lovebirds and Parrots. Also, cages, perches, toys, food, and what how much light it needs. It teaches one trick. It does not give specific foods or perches but she thought this book had a lot of information. She hopes you read it if you have a bird or are thinking about getting one.
