Product Description
This book offers a detailed case study into the dynamics of forest use, degradation and loss in Northeast Luzon, Philippines. Following an interdisciplinary approach, the degradation and loss of forest cover in this area between 1950 and 1990 is related to the social and political context of logging, forest migration and changes in upland agriculture. The work makes a major contribution to knowledge both in the field of Philippine studies and in relation to deforestation, environmental change, political ecology and development. Based on 10 years of research, five of which in the Sierra Madre region, the author introduces us to the actions, livelihood options and motives of all the principal groups of actors. Using a stimulating and fascinating balance between systematic survey data and the qualitative, almost anecdotal, reporting of conversations with these key actors, this book offers a compelling insight into the long history of national, regional and local outsiders gaining access to the natural resources and lands of this last large forest frontier in the Philippines. ... Product Description

Culture and Customs of the Philippines provides the best general overview to the Asian archipelago and to a people with close ties to the United States and a long history of emigration and contributions to this country. The volume emphasizes how the strong indigenous Philippine culture meshes with constant influences from the West. Rodell, a specialist in Philippine history and society, superbly evokes the breadth of the Philippines for students and the general public. The wide variety of Philippine traditions is seen in each topic covered: the land, people, and history; religion and thought; literature and art; architecture; cuisine and fashion; gender, marriage, and family; festivals, media, film, and leisure activities; music and dance; and social customs and lifestyle.

Culture and Customs of the Philippines is crucial to multicultural reference collections today needing authoritative information on contemporary Asia that will capture readers' attention. Interest in the Philippines, a former U.S. colony, is especially high. Some highlights of the volume include discussion of the Tagalog, the principal ethnic group; the amalgamation of Christian, folk, and Muslim beliefs; the bahay kubo, the rural house style; and the all-important Philippine family. A chronology, glossary, and numerous photos enhance the text.

Product Description

Why are nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) so successful in today’s world? How do they empower themselves? This insightful book provides important new perspectives on the strategic thinking of NGOs, the way they identify themselves, and how they behave. Raymond L. Bryant develops a novel theoretical perspective around the concept of moral capital and assesses that concept through in-depth case studies of NGOs in the Philippines.
The book’s focus is on perceptions of NGOs as moral and altruistic and how such perceptions can translate into social power. Bryant examines the ambiguous qualities of NGO strategizing, the ways in which the quest for moral capital is bedeviled by the need to compromise with political and economic elites, and the possibilities for NGOs to achieve political goals as moral leaders.

2-0 out of 5 stars ugh.
I really can't improve much on D. J. Nardi's previous review.He/she pretty much sums it up.There are a couple of valuable chapters about the history and positioning of Philippines NGO's, but after that it devolves into a kind of dippy exercise in exploring "moral capital," which doesn't really go anywhere. The datedness is an issue as well. Broad and Cavnaugh's Plundering Paradise is a decent alternative, but it too suffers from being dated.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too pondering and academic, not enough about Philippine NGOs
I've read some of Raymond Bryant's books on Burma and was excited about how he fills the pages with rich facts and history. However, in this book, he does neither. Much of the first 100 pages is taken up with abstract and largely irrelevant academic questions about the nature of morality and altruism. Rather than focus on the subject of Philippine environmental NGOs, I felt the book focused too little on them and referred to them merely to talk more generally about the use of morality among NGOs. However, many of the conclusions were fairly obvious to informed citizens (that NGOs with moral stature are more effective and NGOs seek to create that reputation). Also, much of the research seems to date back to the late 1990s, which is very much out of date for a book that was published in 2006. ... Read more
