Product Description
Johann Georg Hamann (1730-1788) is a major figure not only in German philosophy but also in literature and religious history. In his own time he wrote penetrating criticisms of Herder, Kant, Mendelssohn, and other Enlightenment thinkers; after his death he was an important figure for Goethe, Hegel, Kierkegaard, and others. It was only in the twentieth century, however, that the full and radical extent of his 'linguistic' critique of philosophy was recognized. This volume presents a new translation of a wide selection of his essays, including both famous and lesser-known works. Hamann's enigmatic prose-style was deliberately at odds with Enlightenment assumptions about language, and a full apparatus of annotation explains the numerous allusions in his essays. The volume is completed by a historical and philosophical introduction and suggestions for further reading. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hamann -- The Counter Enlightenment's Little Known Genius
Since the 18th century, Hamann has been little known and translated into English. His works have been scattred about and difficult to obtain. Historically, this absence might seem odd. Herder, who worked with both Kant and Hamann, chose Hamann as his mentor. Hamann influenced Goethe and is often credited with the "storm and stress" movement of what was to become romanticism. Two reasons may account for this disregard: Hamann writes in a poetic manner stuffed with allusions and tropes AND he wages war against the analytic orientation that Kant represents and is taken as right. This edition does a great job with the former with extensive notes to allusions and on translation. The second objection is up to the reader. ... Read more

    Product Description

This new book features a unique, engaging approach to introduce students to philosophy. It combines traditional readings and exercises with fictive narratives starring central figures in the history of the field from Plato to Martin Luther King, Jr. The book makes innovative use of compelling short stories from two writers who have prominently combined philosophy and fiction in their work. These narratives illuminate pivotal aspects of the carefully selected classic readings that follow. This gives students two ways to understand the philosophical positions: through indirect argument in fiction and through direct, deductive presentations. Study questions and writing exercises accompany each set of readings and help students grasp the material and create their own arguments.

    Editorial Review

    Product Description
One of Collingwood’s earliest attempts to define the aesthetic essence of art. His aim, he writes in the preface, is to state a general conception of art and develop its consequences. His conception is one already familiar through the writings of others – "that art is as bottom neither more nor less than imagination" – but from his observation he goes on to outline the various distinctions between subordinate conceptions of art, and to attempt to demonstrate their place in the general conception, and the place of both in life. He urges that the meaningfulness of art cannot be torn from the imaginative setting in which it is embedded, and that we must attempt to explain the process by which an artist reaches a particular point of view on reality. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Awful - Never buy from seller
I purchased the book with more than enough time to receive before my class started and then never received the book.I sent several emails and never got a response when following up to see why I did not get the book.

    Not reliable at all!!!!

Forced me to scramble to get the book elsewhere and cram for my test at the last minute.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good broad overview of subject matter.
Used in my Social/Political Science class in college, it gives a great variety of exposure to many various philosophers. Then, after each is the feminist perspective in modern context. It's a great source for broad brush exposure, but for more thorough reading, I would go elsewhere. I did keep the book though, makes a good reference once in a while. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great. The problems don't make it lose a full star.
Very nice selection of classics and recent articles in philosophy. The editors' introductions are helpful, though Graham's style is sometimes too chatty, and the intro to Aquinas' five ways contains a list of the fiveways which contains a glaring error. Also, note that this book is too longfor even a full-year course.A full-year course can cover only six of itseight chapters. So, it really is bulky for a half year course (three ofthe eight chapters). But even then, it's good stuff, and not too expensiveeven for the half year. ... Causal inference is perhaps the most important form ofreasoning in the sciences. A panoply of disciplines, ranging fromepidemiology to biology, from econometrics to physics, makeuse of probability and statistics in order to infer causalrelationships. However, the very foundations of causal inferenceare up in the air; it is by no means clear which methods of causalinference should be used, nor why they work when they do.This book brings philosophers and scientists together to tackle these important questions. The papers in this volume shed light on the relationship between causality and probability and the application of these concepts within the sciences. With its interdisciplinary perspective and its careful analysis, "Causality and Probability in the Sciences" heralds the transition of causal inference from an art to a science. ... Read more

    Product Description
In this rich and resonant work, Soren Kierkegaard reflects poetically and philosophically on the biblical story of God's command to Abraham, that he sacrifice his son Isaac as a test of faith. Was Abraham's proposed action morally and religiously justified or murder? Is there an absolute duty to God? Was Abraham justified in remaining silent? In pondering these questions, Kierkegaard presents faith as a paradox that cannot be understood by reason and conventional morality, and he challenges the universalist ethics and immanental philosophy of modern German idealism, especially as represented by Kant and Hegel. This volume presents the first new English translation for twenty years, by Sylvia Walsh, together with an introduction by C. Stephen Evans which examines the ethical and religious issues raised by the text. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Stellar Edition
With its muted, textual appearance and the word "Cambridge" hovering on top of the front cover, this edition of Fear and Trembling may scare off prospective readers, who are forgiven if they think, at first glance, this edition is aimed at dedicated specialists.

It's not. Within these covers is a page-turning, logically-presented and faithfully-executed rendition of Kierkegaard's magnum opus: an edition suitable for almost anyone. The introduction by Baylor University's C. Stephen Evans is the most lucid commentary on Fear and Trembling I've ever read. Engaging, terse and fluid, Evans's essay lays the groundwork for a translation that conveys the Copenhagen writer's lyrical, dramatic and philosophic intentions with equal aplomb. When compared with the Penguin Classics edition, this rendition is more accessible, a quality I attribute to Sylvia Walsh's sensitive understanding of the original text and Evans's ability to relay Kierkegaard's stealthy, pseudonymous writings to a modern audience.

Some additional notes: 1) rather than merely document information, Evans conveys the author's jocularity and spirit (e.g., "Tuning Up" and "A Preliminary Outpouring from the Heart" instead of the Penguin edition's "Attunement" and "Preamble from the Heart);" 2) the footnotes provide helpful contexts and insights; 3) the layout and font help to stave off reader fatigue; 4) despite its accessibility, the translation is accurate (e.g., the way in which the distinction between an individual and the particular is navigated), and 5) allusions to icons of modern culture (e.g., Martin Luther King and John Lennon) add contemporary relevance to the 19th century Dane's work without cheapening the overall effect.

Cambridge University Press has managed to turn a challenging book into a great read and, in turn, I highly recommend their edition.
