Product Description

Trained as a photographer, Terry Border left the commercial world for story-telling. His complex vignettes are made of the simplest, everyday items: a jar of spices, a cigarette stub, a flower, a snack food. These sly photos range from whimsical scenes to sexy scenarios, the sad truths to the hilarious happenings in everyday life. In the tradition of bestselling humorous photography books like Chicks with Baggage, Play with Your Food, and Hello Cupcake!, this volume will surprise you with every viewing. A sunflower missing a petal becomes the tortured artist Van Gogh; an egg arrives to visit his mom only to discover roast chicken on the table; when confronted by a jar of peanut butter, peanuts hold a wake; and hot dogs leave behind their own brand of little presents. Marshmallows, wine corks, bread, soap, rocks, and tea bagsā€”no common household item is safe from the twisted (wire) mind behind these uncommon creations!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very intriguing
I love the narrative built into each image. Skip the text though, just look at the pictures. I say this because the author's tone is that he is quite full of himself and reading his words really detracted from the experience for me. Let your work speak for itself dude.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terry Border is the best!
I love keeping up with the Bent Objects blog. Terry Border has such a great imagination. This book is a perfect gift for someone with a sense of humor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read, then re-read
I purchased a bunch of these as Christmas gifts for my friends - to say it was a huge hit would be an understatement. You do need to study the photos, you'll see something new every time you look at them. And you'll never look at a plastic lemon bottle the same again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Terry Border's "Bent Objects" borders on bending reality
Suffice it to say that this is one of the more original art forms to come along in a long time. First, one must say that Border shoots positively lovely still life photos--with simplicity, precision and great lighting. So it's a suitable coffee table book!It would be enough if his quirky food-formed "clay-mation" still life shots were simply funny. They are.(And they are made even funnier, sometimes, by the titles he gives them). But they are not just photos, they are "captioned photo art cartoon humor".But separate from the humor, they stand alone as good photography.Every single character is one so life-like that you would not be surprised to see it get up off the couch and walk out of the room. They are food-drawn cartoons.Let's just say he has a seriously bent mind. But one you'll like.(And since he lives in my hometown, I am hoping to bump into him--once I determine first that he's not as weird as he just might be!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Twisted and hilarious
Every photo in this book is hilarious and a little twisted. I tend to anthropomorphize objects, so the photos especially speak to me. I can imagine one of the lemons in my citrus bowl secretly ordering a ReaLemon to keep it company behind closed doors... ... Read more

Product Description

Against a stark horizon in a harsh climate, settlers in Nebraska everywhere erected monuments to their optimism. The buildings pictured in Dreams in Dry Places are not just famous landmarks like the State Capitol but also humble farmhouses, barns, grain elevators, courthouses, banks, churches, stores, and theaters. They represent every kind of architecture to be found in Nebraska--folk, high-style, commercial, residential, pioneer, and modern; the unexpected and the familiar, the poetic and the prosaic, good and bad. Caught by Roger Bruhn's camera, these structures always suggest the spiritual resources of their builders and inhabitants, who struggled for a livelihood on the Great Plains.

Dreams in Dry Places has an architecture of its own, beginning and ending with images of the natural landscape and in between revealing unexpected continuities among disparate structures and settings, juxtapositions of forms, and the vanities and vagaries of architectural style. Exterior and interior shots are combined to show how a sense of openness pervades design. The 118 photographs are in black and white--the color of dreams. In his introduction Bruhn writes, "With images alone, I hope to make you feel something about striving, about aspirations, about dreams."

Product Description
Narrative by Clark M. Thomas, Introduction by Constance B. SchulzInitially commissioned to record the progress of Pittsburgh's Renaissance I, these unforgettable black-and-white photographs of Roy Stryker's Pittsburgh Photographic Library (PPL) capture the city in a state of flux. They reveal a union of opposites-the suited wonderment of the downtown businessman with the easy grace and competence of a shirtless construction worker balanced high over his head; the anonymity and isolation of planned housing with the belief in expansion and renewal; the energy and excitement of a city on the move with the traditions of the established elite; the juxtaposition between the growing optimism about the ability of technology to improve our lives; and the traditional steel and other heavy smokestack industries that still dominated the region. The Renaissance was seen as a way for Pittsburgh to keep abreast of modern urban life and to preserve its economic position, but the rapid development of a white suburban middle class was sapping the very essence of the personalized downtown neighborhoods. These photographers have captured the convergence of destruction and rejuvenation that is the essence of an urban renaissance-all the anxiety and hope of the decade is reflected in these poignant photographs.

Constance Schulz's fascinating essay "The Story of the PPL," in order to present a full picture of the political and civic goals, achievements, and failings of the project, provides a thorough discussion of the background of the Pittsburgh Photographic Library, putting into perspective the Allegheny Conference's purpose for initiating the PPL, Roy Stryker's own vision and work, as well as those of the photographers who worked for Stryker on the project, and the politics that undermined the full implementation of it. Clark M. Thomas's accompanying narrative offers an eclectic range of facts and fascinating bits of the city's history and neighborhood lore, as well as noting important political and economic episodes. It also provides a glimpse into the often underrepresented lives of minorities and women in the region's development. Anyone moved by the incredible social upheaval and expansion that occurred in cities across the nation in the 1950s following years of depression and war will want to have this collection. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Iron and steel city
Pittsburgh is well served by having two remarkable photo books covering the same period. This one and Dream Street: W. Eugene Smith's Pittsburgh Project, 1955-1958 .Both portray Pittsburgh as a vibrant, changing city in the Fifties with wonderful photos.

Of the two books I prefer 'Witness...' as it has a slight edge in being a superior production and editorially features the work of several photographers.Smith's book is more a personal photographic statement about how he saw the city and is selected from seventeen thousand images he took of Pittsburgh over twelve months.

Schultz and Plattner's book is based on Roy Stryker's photo library that the city planners commissioned him to create in 1949.He was the perfect choice having been in charge of America's greatest photo endeavor: the FSA collection from the Depression years. The eleven photographers he chose turned in some of the best reportage work you'll ever see. There are no duds here, each photo tells a story, whether it's the construction of a modern downtown, folks on the street, at work or at home.Fortunately this is more than just a book of well printed photos. They are divided into loose themes and each gets a short essay putting the images into the context of a growing city. The front of the book has an excellent twenty-six page essay about Stryker's Pittsburgh Photographic Library.

Great photos need a classy looking book and this is the perfect example of that. The photos are one to a page with generous margins and a caption, the printing is on a silky matt art with a 300 screen. So many of these photos are saturated with detail and texture that they require quality printing.A beautiful Russell Lee photo (plate 59) of a street scene with several shops allows you read the signs in the windows or a Clyde Hare shot (plate 20) of downtown looking along Penn Avenue to the partially build Gateway Center is in pin-sharp detail.

This square format book with its beautiful editorial content and production can be regarded as a sort of template for what a documentary photo book should look like.

5-0 out of 5 stars witness to the fifties
This is an amazing book full of beautiful photographs and corresponding text that captures a time in American history when everthing and anything seemed possible. Pittsburgh undertook a massive urban renewal campaign inthe early 1950's and this book chronicles the events that occurred as thecity was transformed from Twain's "hell with the lid off" to themodern city it is today. The book is printed on museum quality archivepaper and is a quality production throughout. The cost was kept down bygrants from local agencies and wereap the benefits of a high quality bookat a very affordable price. The book is composed of full page sepia toneprints from a cadre of photographers who were brought to Pittsburghspecifically for this project. It strikes a balance between chronicling theconstruction of a "new city" with an insightful view of thesocial fabric of the time. It is also one of the only chronicles of thedislocation of an entire African-American urban community to make way forurban "progress". The photographic project was coordinated andcreated by the same individual who administered the FHA photographyprojects for the WPA during the depression, of which Dorthea Lange'spictures are so famous. That same feel of chronicling a unigue time andplace in history is evident in this book. The text is equally enlighteningand creates a unified whole with the photo's. I cannot recommend this bookhighy enough. I have a copy in my home and a framed print of the coverphoto hanging on my wall. This book will be of interest to anyone whoenjoys photography, history, social issues, or just wants a beautiful, informational book for themselves or as a gift. ... Read more

Product Description
Since 1959 Bernd and Hilla Becher have been obsessively photographing imperiled industrial structures such as pit-head frames, water towers, blast furnaces, cooling towers, gas tanks, and silos. As documenters of the industrial era in Europe and the United States--an era now drawing to a close--they are not only photographers, but "industrial archaeologists," salvaging testimonies of past developments in the form of "readable" documents for posterity. At the same time, the Bechers could also be called conceptual artists, as their photographs reveal the meaning and transformative character of structure. The Bechers spent two decades searching industrial regions of Western Europe and North America for mineheads. These delicate giants stand over the shaft entrances of mines, housing the cages attached to cables that move up and down the mine shaft, bringing minerals to the surface and transferring miners back and forth from underground.Regardless of their subject, the Bechers' photographic technique has remained constant for decades. Eschewing dramatic lighting effects, they shoot under overcast skies, framing their subject in the center of the picture and shooting from a slightly raised standpoint. The effect of their cool, rigorous approach is to reduce the individual structures they photograph within each typological category to morphological studies executed with artful neutrality. Their single-minded vision, signature style, and photographic identity have influenced an entire generation of younger photographers and have had a major impact on the worlds of conceptual art, architecture, sculpture, and criticism.* Not for sale in France, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, and Austria. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Evocative Photos of a Decaying Landscape
Looking at these amazingly detailed Photographs I see and feel: Cold, cloudy, rainy, foggy days; lonely abandoned Mines; silence in a once noisy environment; decaying buildings; the scars that have been left on flat landscapes...

Though I also like "Industrial Facades", "Gas Tanks", "Water Towers", and especially the now out of Print "Blast Furnaces", and can recommend them all, there is something about this book I like best of the work of Bernd and Hilla Becher. Perhaps it is because I worked in the Dortmund area at one time, and these photos evoke memories of the past...

The Bechers offer little commentary. It is not neccessary. The photographs say it all. They speak of an active, busy past and of the transitory nature of humankind's endeavors, once the mines were exhausted or too costly to operate. The photographs are crisp and incredibly detailed. Each Minehead has its own distinct character and beauty. In Germany they used to have names... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Photo Ops Gone Terribly Wrong
President Bush has, by all accounts, the most visually interesting face for cameras since Nixon was President. President Bush just manages to be expressive and strikes so interesting poses. Throw in some very high speed cameras and you have photo ops turned into photo oops.

The writers took a number of photos of President Bush, some staged and others not, and added captions below the photos. The captions are funny and try to capture what could have been happening in the photo. There are also photos of Kerry, Edwards, Rice, Cheney and a host of others.

This would make a great gift for the person who collects presidential trivia or for someone who has a dislike for President Bush.

5-0 out of 5 stars When Photo Ops become Photo Oops...
This is just a fun little book. What we have here is acollection of 107 photos. There is nothing special about any of these pictures.A lot of them were actully posed for but a totally unconnected caption is added that makes the connection very humorous.A lot of the others are shots that are taken when the President is off guard, relaxed,or even clowning around. It is easy to get shots like this since the cameras are flashing continuously. It kind of reminds me of when I tried to get my 3 kids to pose for a group shot.It also shows how much expressions change even when they are aware that a camera is on them. So, to anyone who has lots of "discards",it is quite simple to spread some out and come up with some great comments to attach to them. One should not take offense at these photos or add any particular political bias over it all as it has been done about many prominent persons.Any world leader and particularly the Queen of England and the Pope are often subjects and of course all presidents at all times.
I am sure President Bush would get a good laugh out of them, and could even come up with as good or better captions.
An even better approach would be to take an actual comment made, then add it to a totally disconnected photo. It would even be fun to take the photos in this book, remove the captions and come up with your own.Hey,have I just invented a parlour game?
This same thing has frequently been done with animals. One of my favorites is a head shot of a Bald Eagle with the caption "But I am smiling".
For some time I have kept a collection of shots of celebrity faces ,with everything removed but the eyes. It's like a puzzle book where the object is to guess who the eyes belong to. Maybe it would be fun to make your own book of photos, either your own snapshots or photos from papers or magazines and come up with your own captions.Who says you could never write a book?
Anyway, an entertaining little book that is good for a half hour's look through;but an idea that could be developed as a personal or group entertainment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Funny
This book features a great selection of mostly less-than-flattering images of W. The captions that accompany each photo make for a pretty hilarious, light-hearted book. Even if you're a Bush fan, there's enough humor in here to keep you laughing out loud.

3-0 out of 5 stars a biased sequel to a great unbiased book
The first book "Photo Oops" contained photos of many different politicians both Democrat, Republican and others in awkward moments.

This book contains solely photos of President Bush in awkward moments. From this, it appears that the authors decided to join in on the "Bush bashing" Aren't there enough new photos yet for a bipartisan book? (not that I suppport Bush) There are certianly a lot of Bush photos, maybe because he got most of the media attention.

They should do a third book after the election is over with some of the candidates in awkward moments. The photo of Howard Dean's famous scream would be a great cover photo! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amusement galore!
This was one of the most amusing books I've ever read. It provided a light hearted insight into the behaviour and mannerisms of Germans in Mallorca. The story reminded me of the fun that I had when I visited Mallorca in the 1980's.

I would highly recommend this book since it will keep you laughing until the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny!
This book is really funny. It has slapstick humor.I could see the funny situations created, given all the players and setting in place. It's hard to believe that such a place as a German paradise exists in the world. After reading this book, I am inspired to visit Majorca, just to see how things are.I will probably bring the book along as a guide.I say, it's a funny book with a purpose!
