Through the lens with print: part two
As I wrote in my review of the first edition, both will surely become the standard reference about photobooks.This second one is mostly concerned with contemporary photography and the coverage is really impressive which raises an important point: both books regard their subject as a lively and energetic creative medium and not a dry academic one reflecting an elitist point-of-view.

Just over two hundred photobooks are considered in nine chapters and like book one each has a technical caption (publisher, size, pages, date etc) and an excellent analysis of the photos and the book.The coverage, as I mentioned is very comprehensive.There is a chapter devoted to books that are not commercially available (The Company Photobook) and the twenty-five covered include a high school yearbook, or chapter six: Looking at Photographs, where the theme is the picture editor as author with twenty-two books.Controversy is not avoided either, chapter eight looks at the work of the New Topographic photographers with their stark takes on blast furnaces, prisons and other potential visual failures of society.

This second book is the same design, with excellent printing and paper, as the first (and to my mind) has the same fault in that there are not enough spreads shown from all the books looked at despite plenty of white space on each page.This does seem an odd editorial oversight when the purpose of the book is to show pages from books full of photographs.The first book had a few examples of many pages from a particular book but I could only find one in this book: a 1957 Norfolk and Western brochure where seventeen pages are shown (out of eighteen) using Winston Link's wonderful train photos

Look through the 656 pages of these two books and you'll soon realise that Badger and Parr have achieved a remarkably lively study.Surely the photobook gold standard.

An excellent sequel...
Just where Volume 1 left off, Volume 2 takes off. Very thorough and well organized, be reminded this is not an all inclusive book of books. You may agree with some of the entries and you may also disagree, but, most important, you'll end up learning on new possible entries for your library as well as discarding considered ones.

Excellent photographs, but disappointing lack of context
The photographs are excellent, but as another reviewer comments the book lacks context. The introductory essay is interesting and way too short. It is also presented in a way that defies all logic. Certain words have been blacked out and are visible only if you have a magnifying glass to hand or your eyesight is very good! I understand this sort of gimmickry up to a point, but it is unnecessary and distracting.

The absence of dates and captions combined with a lack of anaylsis or commentary about the photographs is very frustrating.Nothing about provenance or the collection owner either.What you have is a fascinating collection of images with no information that places them in a historical or social context.

However, the photographs do speak for themselves despite the lack of information. They show the real bodies of real people. No botox or liposuction in evidence here! They reflect their times and in some cases the background details help you identify the era. There is some unintentional humour as well. When you look at the expressions on some of the faces of those supposedly in the throes of sexual ecstasy it looks as exciting as eating lemons!

The photographs are exceptional. Some are quite beautiful. It is an interesting mix of pornographic and what I would describe as
erotic studio poses.

A must for those interested in vintage erotica, but not strong on historical analysis or background information.

Private Collections-geat pinup book circa 1850's to 1940
Private Collections is a beautiful book if you like erotic pinups circa Victorian era thru the 1920's-It's missing 2 pages though-the one I received- those may have been the 1940's pinups. I collect pinup books and so I find it to be a really good one with regards to pure images. It does not have any text, but for me it is not a problem somehow as the photographs are sensational.

However the book arrived with a couple of pages torn out and that bummed me out as I paid good money for it plus the shipping. Amazon is great though, because they offered to replace it with a new one at their cost including their paying for the shipping, which I find very nice and very professional.

Interesting Vintage Compilation That Needs Context
This collection of photographs was a fascinating look into erotica photo musings from 1850-1940. Some photographs were tough to figure out (What WAS that, anyway?!?!) while others were incredibly disturbing - specifically one where a woman is strangled during copulation.

Several photos seemed to be of the same thing. I was disappointed that the photographs did not include specific dates or information about where they appeared, where they were found, etc. That would have given the book more depth. Photgraphic history of Black America
Deborah Willis consistently does outstanding work - she is one of the foremost contributors to this body of work.

Excellent Book full of history
A friend had this book and let me borrow it for a few days. The book had so much history and an abundance of photos taken by black photographers and of black people. The photos actually give the reader a different look and perspective of the way history has been recorded. I find the book to be very interesting and educational and for the price an excellent deal.

Reflecting African American Life
... For more than a century, according to Deborah Willis, curator of photography at the Smithsonian, black photographers deliberately used their work to counter prevailing racial stereotypes and enhance racial pride. Her monumental portfolio of photographs by these artists, studio owners, and itinerant "painters with light" does more than counter stereotypes; it defies attempts to generalize about its subject.

People in this arresting collection of pictures are caught up in all kinds of ordinary pursuits--reading, working, dining, marrying, praying, talking, playing games, posing in lovely clothes, getting haircuts, making music or speeches or dinner--in a spirited, generally trustful relationship with the camera. Clearly Willis's criterion as she selected photographs was, as she says in the text, "expressive power."

Still, white Americans viewing these pictures are likely to bring to the experience the same old images of slavery, Civil Rights marches, and past or present media caricatures of black life that they've drawn from school and popular culture all their lives. Perhaps the delightful photographs of children in the book will take on ominous overtones because we know of future trials the childish mind can't predict. But such a reaction can keep us from realizing that what's on the child's mind may be partly the point.

For example, two Boston children have been posed in front of ornate ironwork, wearing starched lace dresses (it's 1910) and starched bows in their hair. They look beautiful--and stiff, and miserable! Good little girls, they've let Mother dress them up today, but they seem to want to tear off those enormous bows, jump the iron fence, and tumble around on the grass like anyone else their age.

Another example: Malcolm X crouches to hold his two daughters in his arms. He's talking to little Attallah, his eyes warmly upon her. But she turns away from her father's handsome face to stare unhappily at the audience, as if asking us just to go away for a change and give her some private time with Dad.

If the original vitality in these photographs can't keep us from calling up the preconceptions we carry around with us, this may actually be useful. The book's very freshness about what seems familiar makes us realize how old and worn-out our assumptions can be. Thus the photographs can (as Willis says in her introduction) "create a new � historical consciousness that has the power to rewrite history itself."

But "Reflections in Black" is more than a documentary that can provoke useful debates within ourselves and between groups interpreting past or present culture. It shows that despite their commonalities black photographers have a long history of debating with each other. Is their medium an art or an engine of social progress? Should photography make mementos for its subjects or involve and change its viewers? The competing purposes and conflicting angles of vision represented in the book are part of what makes it fascinating.

Best of all, the book is marvelous for simply wandering and wondering through:

A remarkable series by a photographer who eventually lived in Seattle presents a man in three poses- - seated for his formal portrait, then hanged for murder, and finally laid out in his coffin.

Women in the book are gloriously unpredictable. Billie Holliday rehearsing with Count Basie looks like a Fifties coed in sweater, plaid skirt, and ponytail. Zora Neale Hurston smiles like an angel instead of with her usual impish brass.

Men? None are alike. A nattily dressed man waits at a bright window, fedora tipped up to let in the view, papers gleaming mysteriously in the background. A lined, leathery cowboy smokes a cigarette, his arms roped with tendons. Seattle's own Jacob Lawrence looks like a serious man at twenty and equally serious midway through his life, midway up a stepladder, in reverie.

Elsewhere, a lonely stony beach caresses the eye with dark grays and liquid silver. And beside a brick building draped with a gigantic sky-blue banner painted with the face of Malcolm X, a black cowboy rides through a golden field.

Perfection is truly hard to find, but......
"Reflections in Black: A History of Black Photographers, from 1840 to the Present" comes awfully close. The photos vividly chronicle the Black experience in America. From the famous to the not so famous, all the joys and sorrows of a people are marvelously presented in this exquisite document.The accompanying text is entertainingly informative.The authors have truly outdone themselves.

I will be purchasing a few copies for friends.Others, I will tell to get their own.

Artistic simplicity
Although light is no material it has always been an important building medium, a mediator, a mover, an immaterial bridge between reality and perception.

Seeing all this different aspects the book by Robert Elwall is a great gift for taking a reflection about architectural photography and amazing buildings shown in their prevailing historical context. It always pleases me to see how the ideas of Le Corbusier, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy (Bauhaus), Frank Lloyd Wright and others have influenced modern architects by their own efforts to create timeless beauty instead of sleeping batteries or inhuman office factories.

This book brought back to me a form of contemplative awareness that a "Flatiron Building" in New York was build more than 100 years ago and is still a monument in our modern times, like the Solomon R Guggenheim Museum (1959) or Pier Luigi Nervi's "Palazzo dello Sport" in Rome.

One can see many more incredible, mostly black and white pictures in this special cinematic compositional sense and a pioneering use for moody key features. It's this striking instance of twilight and artistic simplicity which has become increasingly fashionable in architectural photography till today.

A pleasure for architects, photographers and building enthusiasts and because of many included back-ground information to historians as well.

A Great Collectors reference Book.
If you collect Antique Cameras as I do, this is a page by page surprise to study and enjoy. Beautifully illustrated with full color photos, and of course well photographed. This Book is a real keeper for the Coffee Table or the Library.

The best photograpgraphic history book of 2001
Fred Spira was born in Vienna in 1924 and came to the UK for the first time in 1939 as part of the Kindertransport staying in Doncaster before re-joining his family in the USA. He founded Spiratone which was instrumental in opening up the United States market to Japanese photographic products and had a high reputation amongst photographers at the time and is still remembered with a great deal of affection.
The Spira collection, unlike many collections, was put together with a great deal of thought to tell the story of the history of photography through photographic technology and each piece in it was important - all 20,000 or so. Although large in terms of the number of pieces non was superfluous to the overall theme and there was no element of gathering, for example, every Leica variant. If there were variants of the same camera then they were there for a good reason. The collection ranged from pre-photography and pre-cinema items, the history of the camera, the photographic image, the moving image and associated contemporary material such as engravings, cartoons printed material and ephemera.
This book is organised in a similar way starting with photography's precursors, the early years, daguerreotypy, wet-collodion, dry plates, stereo, rollfilm, prints and processes, 35mm, colour, the moving image, photography and humour and finally on to the digital camera. Each chapter provides a written survey of the theme and illustrates cameras, equipment and images. Throughout the book some themes are explored in greater detail across a whole page. As one would expect there are many rarities shown but also humbler cameras that are important from a technical point of view.
It is difficult to pick a favourite chapter. Two that stand out for me are those dealing with the daguerreotype and the digital camera. The former exemplifies what the whole book is about. The text surveys the development and importance of the process, there are illustrated profiles of the processing apparatus and various daguerreian cameras, and features on, for example, how daguerreotypes were coloured. Alongside these are reproductions of many superb daguerreotype images and daguerreotype display cases, broadsides and lithographs showing daguerreotypists, that give a wider context to the overall theme. The final chapter on filmless (digital) cameras, for the first time anywhere, looks at the history and development to date of the digital camera. Cameras and packaging are illustrated and there is a useful timeline. The inclusion of this chapter brings the Spira collection up to date and shows a perceptive acquisition policy.
There has been no comparable book dealing with the history of photography in this way by looking at the close interaction and relationship between photographic technology and images. The writing is excellent and the colour images do justice to the objects from the Spira collection and to the overall themes within the book.
This book cannot be recommended highly enough. It pays tribute to the Spira collection and at the same time makes a worthwhile contribution to the history of photography. Todd Gustavson, Technology Curator at George Eastman House describes the book as `one of the most important photo-history books of the last quarter century'. I would not disagree.

UNSEEN VOGUE
Interesting look at glamor photographs during the early to late 20th century in England, which set many fashion trends. This book shows some of the poses and styles that are typical of Vogue covers and fashion shots of some of the most famous models andmovie stars of that period. This is what the best photographers with the best equipment can do with some of the most beautiful women in the world. It also shows that photography is an art not a science, not every shot or creative idea works,but this magazine has led the pack worldwide.

A visual history
I was looking for a book that would inspire me while also giving me a sense of fashion photography's history, and this is just the book. I've turned to it many times as a springboard for ideas or for the pure enjoyment of looking at the images. The copy in the front, though difficult to read because of the small font size, gives interesting gossipy tidbits about the shoots. Though not a complete history of fashion photographer by any means, its focus on Vogue keeps the book from being overwhelming.

Fashion Guru Must-Have
As a fan of the fashion industry, I was excited by this book. It is absolutely filled with major stars. It spans several decades and features models like Jean Shrimpton, Twiggy, Penelope Tree, Pat Cleveland, Veruschka, Uma Thurman, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Shalow Harlow, Claudia Schiffer, Karen Elson, Maggie Rizer, and Gisele Bundchen. All of the photos are breaktakingly beautiful and interesting from classy old Hollywood style photos, strange modern poses, and glamorous high fashion spreads.

For those of you who actually read these coffee table books, you will not be disappointed. This book is filled with useful information about the industry, Vogue, and how fashion has impacted culture.

A GREAT SURPRISE
The book is essentially the companion to one of the most fascinating shows that I ever stumbled upon. Last November in London, I went to the Design Museum[founded by Terrence Conran] to view an exhibit of aluminum[aluminium].

Coincidentally, there was this Vogue show. Having paid my admission to the museum, Iviewed this exhibit as well. Now, I don't pretend to know much about fashion nor photography. And this show blew me away. And so does this book, but not as well as the show, of course.

An assemblage of insights into the culture and history of the twentieth century that I would never have encountered on my own. Not only does the story reveal how conde nast's money financed some of the more significant technical innovations in photography[which intrigued me since I try to follow the history of science and technology], but I was also fascinated to discover how it was that Vogue may have had the most energetic and brave war correspondent/photographer of WW2: and it was a beautiful and talented woman - Lee Miller. Do take the time to find out all you can about her.

And lastly, the photos are knock-outs. I wouldn't have done this show or this book deliberately, but having stumbled into the show, I have to pronounce it one of the most educational exhibitions that I have encountered. ... Read more

Historical
This is a review of African American history through pictures. This pictorial history captures your attention and is a vivid reminder of our struggle. Many of us have read about many of the topics in this book,but seeing the pictures make it real. The pictures are graphic, some disturbing but need to be seen. This is a book I hope anyone with an interest in this subject will purchase. This book has pictures I've never knew existed and the pictures are of great quality. I don't expect anyone to be disappointed if they purchase this book.

Informative and Wonderful Book
This book is a wonderful additon to my coffee table book collection.The photographs and historical information regarding the African American struggle for equality in America illustrates just how far African Americans have come in obtaining "freedom and justice for all".I highly recommend this book.

This book is a gorgeous coffee-table volume. It is divided into sections by time periods beginning in the 1840s and continues to the present. Each chapter is introduced with an in-depthdiscussion of what was happening at that time, then moves to captioned photos. The book is large, 10"x12", and is presented on heavy, high quality paper; a pleasure to hold and look at! My only criticism is that readability was sacrificed for design. The type is very small and, therefore, difficult to read, and the caption reference number below each photo is mircoscopic. Also, even though I'm sure the photos were reproduced perfectly, some are hard to make out (what do I expect for 100+ year old photos!) I recommend this book whether you are interested in this subject, interested in photography or just love beautiful books. ... Read more

This book is just great. It's all print - no photos yet it gives you more than you could ever know into the truth about being born a photographer.

Great book, but slow shipping
The product itself arrived just as it was described online, but it took over 3 weeks for me to receive it in the mail! Fascinating look at an erotic past
The photos in this book were well reproduced and plentiful.For the price of this book, you couldn't ask for much more.It was really interesting to me to see what early erotic photography was like .This was a subject I wasn't too familiar with... having only seen a bit of it... but I really enjoyed looking at this book and would definitely recommend it.

A Wonderful Collection
While we are no longer scandalized by the nude body, we have too much allowed our sophistication to turn to boredom. With this collection we can trace the aesthetics of nudity and see its genres and developments. Here the standards of beauty, posture, and placement become clear as historical consequences. We see too the elements of technology as they influence the stance and audience. short and sweet
This is a great resource if you teach Nebraska history.If you think you're getting in-depth info, look elsewhere.There are plenty of good pictures in here and each chapter has about 2-3 pages of writing so it's nice to read before bed.

Nebraska's history in pictures

An oversized, very handsomely illustrated history of Nebraska. There is some text, but the emphasis is on the photographs depicting various time periods in the state's development. There are 5 major sections: before statehood, the fledgling state, the emergence of modern Nebraska (1890-1930), drought and war (1930-1970), and the most recent technological era (1970-present). The photos are far-ranging and include famous people, forts, Native Americans, early town and city growth, natural formations, Dust Bowl scenes, cowboy and farm life, and the most recent developments.
