5-0 out of 5 stars Aquatic Photosynthesis
This definitive text on aquatic photosynthesis reads like a good novel. It takes the reader on a scientific adventure through the fundamentals of light absorption and the biophysics of the light reactions all the way tothe biogeochemistry and evolution.Interspersed throughout the book areparticularly interesting anecdotes about everything fromthe molecularclock to hole burning.A scientific tour de force!

5-0 out of 5 stars photosynthesis from the subatomic to the global level
This is an extremely interesting and useful book for anyone working with or needing knowledge of photosynthesis in algae and other aquatic plants. The emphasis on biophysics in the first few chapters sheds a whole newlight on the processes of photosynthesis at the most basic level.Theinformation is general and does not give extensive citations to currentscientific work, but rather focuses on the historical research leading tocurrent understanding of photosynthesis.

My one criticism so far iswith the number of errors, typographical and other, in some of the graphsand figures, making it quite hard to figure out just what is what. Hopefullythere will be a revised edition which will correct these. ... Read more

Product Description

Sulfur is one of the most versatile elements in life due to its reactivity in different oxidation and reduction states. In phototrophic organisms, the redox properties of sulfur in proteins, and of sulfur-containing metabolites, are particularly important in the interaction between the reductive assimilation processes of photosynthesis and reactive oxygen species that arise as by-products of electron transport chains. Thiol groups in proteins and metabolites are targets of reactive oxygen species, resulting in potential damage and at the same time giving rise to redox signal cascades that trigger repair reactions and adaptation to environmental stress. Further, reduced sulfur compounds play a prominent role as electron donors for photosynthetic carbon dioxide fixation in anoxygenic phototrophic sulfur bacteria. Interest in the investigation of the multiple functions of sulfur-related processes has increased exponentially in recent years, especially in molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, agrobiotechnology and ecology. This book provides, for the first time, in-depth and integrated coverage of the functions of sulfur in phototrophic organisms including bacteria, plants and algae; it bridges gaps between biochemistry and cellular biology of sulfur in these organisms, and of biology and environments dominated by them. This book is designed to be a comprehensive resource on sulfur in phototrophic organisms for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, beginning researchers and teachers in the area of photosynthesis, bacterial energy metabolism, biotechnology, plant nutrition, plant production and plant molecular physiology.

Product Description
Photosystem II: The Light-Driven Water:Plastoquinone Oxidoreductase provides a comprehensive text for graduate students and scientific researchers from around the world interested in oxygenic photosynthesis and its essential role in maintaining aerobic life on Earth, including ourselves. Dedicated to the memory of one of the early pioneers in this field of research, Professor Gerald T. Babcock, the 34 inclusive chapters of the present volume covers all major aspects of the molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics and physiology of Photosystem II. The chapters were variously authored by a total of 75 scientific experts from leading research centers in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia, making the book a truly international effort. The book is divided into several parts which detail the protein constituents, functional sites, tertiary structure, molecular dynamics and mechanisms of subunit assembly and homeostasis. The book ends with a comparison of Photosystem II structure and function with other related enzymes and bio-mimetic systems. Since the unique water-splitting chemistry catalyzed by Photosystem II leads to the production of pure oxygen gas and the potential for making hydrogen gas, a primary goal of this book is to provide a molecular guide to future protein engineers and bio-mimetic chemists in the development of appropriate biocatalysts for the generation of clean, renewable energy from sunlight and water. ... Product Description
Inhibitors of photosynthesis have played a major role in creating specific reactions and components involved in light energy transduction by the chloroplast. Although diuron (DCMU) is thought to have the greatest impact on photosynthetic research, other compounds should not be underestimated and together have played a prominent role in advances in agricultural production. These advances have lead to strong links being established between biophysicists and biochemists studying the photochemistry of the thylakoids and the agrochemical industry. Some herbicides however, interfere with chloroplast development creating an obvious theme for the volume Topics in Photosynthesis . The themes covered in this volume consist of an overview of possible interactions between herbicides and photosynthesis, the generation of oxygen radicals in plants associated with photosynthetic activities and the damage caused by many herbicides. The effects of herbicides on carotenoid, chlorophyll and chloroplast lipid biosynthetics pathway are also reviewed as well as a quest to identify chemicals which will stimulate photosynthetic potential to increase crop yields. ... Product Description

Chloroplasts are vital for life as we know it. At the leaf cell level, it is common knowledge that a chloroplast interacts with its surroundings – but this knowledge is often limited to the benefits of oxygenic photosynthesis and that chloroplasts provide reduced carbon, nitrogen and sulphur. This book presents the intricate interplay between chloroplasts and their immediate and more distant environments. The topic is explored in chapters covering aspects of evolution, the chloroplast/cytoplasm barrier, transport, division, motility and bidirectional signalling. Taken together, the contributed chapters provide an exciting insight into the complexity of how chloroplast functions are related to cellular and plant-level functions. The recent rapid advances in the presented research areas, largely made possible by the development of molecular techniques and genetic screens of an increasing number of plant model systems, make this interaction a topical issue.

Genome Mapping and Molecular Breeding in Plants presents the current status of the elucidation and improvement of plant genomes of economic interest. The focus is on genetic and physical mapping, positioning, cloning, monitoring of desirable genes by molecular breeding and the most recent advances in genomics. The series comprises seven volumes: Cereals and Millets; Oilseeds; Pulse, Sugar and Tuber Crops; Fruits and Nuts; Vegetables; Technical Crops; and Forest Trees.

Oilseeds is devoted to oil-producing field crops such as soybeans, oilseed rape, peanuts, sunflowers, Indian mustard, Brassica rapa, black mustard and flax. While the grouping of economic plants is conventionally based on their agricultural purposes, several crops covered in this volume have other uses besides yielding oils. Brassica rapa is also used as a vegetable, the sunflower as an ornamental, and flax as a fibre crop. Black mustard, which is used as a condiment but is genetically close to other Brassica species, is also included here.
