Product Description
Rising above the polemics surrounding sexual and physical abuse, David and Jill Savege Scharff bring a relational perspective to the integration of psychoanalytic and trauma theories in order to understand the effects of overwhelming physical and psychological trauma, including sexual abuse, injury, and birth defect. The Scharffs draw from their object relations therapy with individuals, families, and couples recovering from trauma and abundance of relevant clinical examples described in their characteristically personal and vivid style. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Case studies about Trauma
This is an honest book about the failures and triumphs of object relations therapy with trauma survivors.Trauma cases discussed in this book involved medical traumas and incest traumas.

The first half of the book is an explanation of the different forms of dissociation. It also talks about the pros and cons of evoking repressed memories of trauma. The author gives her thoughts on repression as well.

The author doesn't go into too much details about object relations technique or how she thought it helped her clients.I took off one star for that reason.

This book was touching, shocking, and at times very sad.It made me realize that people survive through trauma in different ways, and handle unwanted and negative emotion in different and unproductive ways; and I grew an appeciation for trauma survivors and a certain amount of sympathy.

Product Description
Classically, manipulations of the cranium address the sutures, the membranes and the circulation of cerebral spinal fluid. The proper functioning of these elements requires not only the mechanical harmony of the craniosacral system, but relies also on the exchange of information organized around proprioceptors, baroreceptors and chemoreceptors. These receptors are extremely sensitive. It is the nervous system -cranial nerves and the autonomic nervous system - which transports this intelligence. Neural dysfunctions have, therefore the ability to disturb the fundamental components of the primary respiratory mechanism.Entirely new, original and abundantly illustrated, this book is an essential guide with which to visualize and become familiar with the cranial nerves. It will teach the practitioner manipulations of this delicate neural system as well as new techniques which permit one to have an effect on the most precious part of the cranium: the brain. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Kudos to Dr. Cook's Evidence-Based Approach
I am a recent physical therapy doctoral graduate and a post-doctoral orthopedic manual resident in West Los Angels, California. Dr. Cook's book is an invaluable and indispensable evidenced-based resource for examination, treatment and reassessment. This publication is on the cutting edge of medical research and practice. It provides a revolutionary break through in the methodology and advancement of orthopedic manual therapy. The author calls for a non-dogmatic research validated approach for the standardization of orthopedic physical therapy examination and evaluation methods. Many of my own personal questions and concerns that have challenged the efficaciousness of our current practice techniques were answered by Dr. Cook's comprehensive review of the literature on orthopedic practice. Bottom line... you can throw your McGee and Dutton textbooks in the trash; along with the other tenuous myths and theories of merit that have discredited and stigmatized the therapy profession for years.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book to have in your practice
With the advent of evidence-based practice, this book is a very practical guide for clinicians. It integrates up to date research with the different orthopedic manual techniques mentioned. It is not afraid to cite if some manual techniques lack or have weak research supporting its effectivity. The pictures demonstrating the therapist performing the techniques are clear with specific instructions written beside it. It is actually one manual therapy book I enjoyed reading cover to cover. The only thing though is the diagram/sketch of the skeletal anatomy can stand some improvement. Also, some typographical errors need to be corrected. Both of these are quite understandable being the book is a first edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clinically relevant
Unlike many of the orthopedic physical therapy textbooks out there, this book is both comprehensive and practical.Dr. Cook's textbook focuses on the clinical application of manual physical therapy. It provides a context within which a patient may be both evaluated and treated. Each chapter is heavily referenced and there are detailed descriptions and illustrations of numerous evaluation and treatment techniques.I work with physical therapy students in my clinic during their clinical internships and find this textbook to be indispensable in helping them bridge the gap from the academic setting to the real world of clinical practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Book
This book is a great resource for both the novice and experienced orthopedic manual therapist. The most updated evidence is provided in a nice summary that is reader-friendly.The pictures are large and detailed with step-by-step instructions of "how to" perform various procedures and techniques. Both the spine and peripheral joints are covered. What a comprehensive manual!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great work Dr. Cook!
As a specialist in orthopaedic physical therapy, i found this book extremely refreshing. Finally, a text that offers a non-dogmatic review of manual therapy and evidenced based physical therapy.I greatly enjoyed having the a specificity and sensitivity of most ortho special tests collected in one book. Moreover, i found the manual therapy techniques easy to understand and apply in clinic.I highly recommend this book to all who aspire to succeed in the ortho physical therapy arena!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference
Helpful guide to making practical and appropriate decisions regarding establishing and providing a course of action for the neurologically-involved pediatric population.

5-0 out of 5 stars The content fits the title
I am a PT with 13 years of experience. The last 6 years consisted mostly of a pediatric case load. I purchased this book due to its title.

At first I found the first chapter a little overwhelming. I scanned over it and continued reading the rest of the book. I found the book fascinating, and was unable to put it down during some free time in the summer. I finished the book reading chapter 1 again.

The openingchapter describes models for decision making that may be helpful to clinicians in reflecting on their practice. Each contributor in the book, an expert in her field, has reviewed the recent literature on her topic and has presented case reports on children from her practice. In their case reports the contributors elaborate on the bases for their choices of goals, the measures used to document problems and progress and the intervention provided.

Both the novice and experienced pediatric PT will benefit from this book.

Reflecting back, my excitement after reading just the title was rewarded by improved patient care after reading the content. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Virtually a compilation of medical journal articles
This is a treatise on the subject, i.e., more than high-end coverage of a complex joint. The authors throw the reader directly into scholarly analyses with an abundance of research references--as if to not offend the reader who is presumed already knowledgeable about most of the subject matter.

This is typical medical journal style; and it has its place. However, the potential book buyer is well served to understand this is by no means a casual read nor perhaps a standalone explanation of shoulder maladies, as ancillary references may be helpful (or necessary) in augmenting this book.

Written solely for the practitioner, the text does not address self-help.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
Excellent book with fantastic pictures. Bought this book due to injury suffered but I could understand the intellectual level this book is written with. Great for students!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Evidence-Based Reference Book
The fourth edition looks the coolest of all previous editions due to its metallic blue cover. The information inside ain't bad either.

Written by a physical therapist, this book is more for people in the field, such as PT's, athletic trainer's or even ortho docs- in other words people who specialize in the shoulder. I found it to be a great reference book to keep on my desk as it covers every major shoulder problem, from frozen shoulder, to impingement issues, to brachial plexus problems. However non-medical readers looking for a less technical book to treat their shoulder pain might be interested in Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff.

3-0 out of 5 stars Suitable for more seasoned professionals
I am a licensed massage therapist who has been in practice for two years. I was looking to get more specific help for those (including myself) with tendon and ligament injuries. While the author is obviously very knowledgeable on anatomy and physiology, he seems to assume the reader is well-learned with the various modalities that he incorporates into his therapy: Visceral Manipulation, Cranial Rhythmic Impulse, Zero Balancing, acupressure, Facial Release Technique and Body-Mind Centering.

I am familiar with what they are, but have not had the money or time to study them in-depth, yet. Weintraub explains what each is and its purpose in his therapy model, but his description of incorporating these modalities within his therapy model seems general and sweeping, going from one modality to the next, assuming the reader knows what he is referring to within that modality. Not everyone is practiced in those modalities.

His chapter on The Nature of Tendons & Ligaments is the most informative, including standard views and new research findings. Well written with bibliographic citations. It is also a good review for me, as it has extra, detailed information on tendons and ligaments than I have in my anatomy and physiology texts from school. The rest of the book seems rushed.

The Self-Help Strategies chapter is somewhat helpful, but only seven pages long! More in-depth suggestions would have made this book worth the money had I bought it.

I was not able to get the newer edition of this book from the library, so perhaps my criticism for this edition will be moot if I ever read the next edition(s). I hope so, because I would have appreciated a specific,step-by-step guide or protocol, especially for those modalities I have not studied in-depth yet and which other readers may not be familiar with either.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Done, but Definitely Not a "Self-Help" Manual
Weintraub certainly knows his way around the body. I am moderately well versed in medical terminology and anatomically I am fairly astute having studied both in college and independently. I work in a medical laboratory. The man (orwoman) on the street will be quickly left in the wake of unfamiliar terms. Further, his knowlege does nottranslate well if you're looking for a way to heal yourself...The chapter titled "Self Help Strategies" runs to all of seven pages. Neither, does the book offer any clues as to how to contact a practitioner versed in his methods (he seems to be the only one), nor does it contain any contact information for the author.

The citations are numerous and the book is well referenced: something that is often lacking in similar books. He has definitely done his homework. Unfortunately, the unique array of talents which he purports to bring to his method, would be unlikely to occur with any regularity in the general population of manual therapists. I am skeptical of his claim to be able to palpate electrical and magnetic fields. Possible, I suppose, but I remain unconvinced.

In all a well written and documented study. Hopefully, it will lead others in this direction. A lot more work needs to be done, and a modality developed which is widely accessible

He's been doing this for 30+ years and I don't feel he has been able to write a book that can teach this method, though he successfully describes the myriad skills needed to practice it.
