5-0 out of 5 stars Vibrant Characters in His Pittsburgh Cycle
"The Piano Lesson" (1990) by the late August Wilson is part of his ten-play series, the Pittsburg Cycle or the Century Cycle. It focuses on a frequent literary device--a family feud over money, land, or personal property. In this case it's a piano that has carved into its surface a history of the family. Berniece and her brother Boy Willie are battling over possession of the piano. Boy Willie with his buddy, ne'er-do-well Lymon, has brought a truckload of watermelons up from the South to Pittsburgh to peddle, hoping to sell them and also sell the family piano so he can buy a spread of land down South.
This story takes place in the 1930's when the blacks are still living in a South where white people oppressed blacks and where no law existed to intervene for blacks. Boy Willie wants a white man's land, Sutter's spread. Sutter fell down a well, and he may or may not have been assisted in that fall by Boy Willie.
Berniece and her daughter live with her uncle Doaker, a cook for the railroad. He is the voice of reason. She is seeing Avery who wants to set up a church and is the voice of religion and prophecy. Various characters such as Wining Boy play the piano briefly and there are occasional songs. The ghost of Sutter is present at times in the play, and later his spirit plays a pivotal role. As the action of the play continues, all sorts of family memories and history are revealed.
August Wilson was a risk-taker who asked audiences to come along with him as he dealt with questions of ownership, possession, and family disputes while at the same time presenting a very accessible story with flashes of humor, large doses of humanity, and a dramatic structure with a beginning, middle and end. It's about as far from Absurdist theater as you can get.
Wilson created real people in a believable setting. There's a vibrance and a vitality to the people and a sound dramatic structure with a good set-up, development and climax. They are not phony people or cardboard figures. There's a touching homey quality to the play.
One of my favorite haunts in Manhattan is the Edison Café, a diner-type restaurant off the lobby in the Edison Hotel on 47th Street. Fondly known as the Polish Tea Room by its habitués, this was where Wilson was reputed to have written notes for three of his plays on restaurant napkins.

4-0 out of 5 stars Keeping The Historical Memories Alive
Okay, blame it on the recently departed Studs Terkel and his damn interview books. I had just been reading his "The Spectator", a compilation of some of his interviews of various authors, actors and other celebrities from his long-running Chicago radio program when I came across an interview that he had with the playwright under review here, August Wilson. Of course, that interview dealt with things near and dear to their hearts on the cultural front and mine as well. Our mutual love of the blues, our concerns about the history and fate of black people and the other oppressed of capitalist society and our need to express ourselves politically in the best way we can. For Studs it was the incessant interviews, for me it is incessant political activity and for the late August Wilson it was his incessant devotion to his century cycle of ten plays that covered a range of black experiences over the 20th century.

Strangely, although I was familiar with the name of the playwright August Wilson and was aware that he had produced a number of plays that were performed at a college-sponsored repertory theater here in Boston I had not seen or read his plays prior to reading the Terkel interview. Naturally when I read there that one of the plays being discussed was entitled "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" about the legendary female blues singer from the 1920's I ran out to get a copy of the play. That play has been reviewed elsewhere in this space but as is my habit when I read an author who "speaks" to me I grab everything I can by him or her to see where they are going with the work. This is doubly true in the case of Brother Wilson as his work is purposefully structured as an integrated cycle, and as an intensive dramatic look at the black historical experience of the 20th century that has driven a lot of my own above-mentioned political activism.

By the time that this review appears I will have already reviewed five of the ten plays in August Wilson's Century cycle. On the first five I believe that I ran out of fulsome praise for his work and particularly for his tightly woven story and dialogue. Rather than keep following that path for the next five plays I would prefer to concentrate on some of the dialogue that makes Brother Wilson's work so compelling. For those who want to peek at my general observations you can look at my review of "Gem Of The Ocean" (the first play chronologically in the cycle).

In all previously reviewed plays I noticed some piece of dialogue that seemed to me to sum up the essence of the play. Sometimes that is done by the lead character as was the case with Troy Maxton in "Fences" when he (correctly) stated that there should been "no too early" in regard to the possibilities of black achievement and prospects in America. Other times it is by a secondary character in the form of some handed down black folk wisdom as means to survive in racially-hardened America. In "The Piano Lesson" no one phrase sticks out as much as the story surrounding the history of the piano, the carvings engraved in it and the historical memories of slave, slave-owner and the scars of slavery'sharm on black life in the 1930's (and the 2000's).

The struggle between brother and sister, Boy Willie and Berneice, over this family heirloom is more than just an exercise in the productive use of the unused piano but points to the importance of trying to preserve memory in a world that does not cherish such notions. This is not the best play in the Wilson cycle by a long shot but, as always, there is plenty of food for thought for anyone who has confronted this issue. Slavery times, and Jim Crow times, and de facto segregation times and, unfortunately now, in so-called "post-racial" times demand the preservation of such memory. The ill-fated King Hedleys, I and II, and Troy Maxtons of the world (characters in other Wilson plays in this cycle) deserve no less. Once again, kudos Brother Wilson.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alfred Method is great for beginner students . . . and teachers!
I would call myself a beginner piano teacher, as I play the piano myself but have had no instruction as to how to teach others to play.I now have four beginner students, whom I have been teaching for a little over a year.

I love the Alfred method. The four books: technic, lesson, solo/recital, and theory all seem to really work well together. The songs coordinate with each other, so for each new concept taught in the lesson books, the student has a warm-up, a solo piece, and some theory work to back it up.I find this to be very effective. It gives the students a chance to see several examples of each concept, and practice each new concept in different ways until they achieve perfection with it.It also really walks the teacher through each concept very clearly, giving definitions for musical terms and clear instructions for which songs go together.I feel like the order in which concepts are taught also makes a lot of sense.

Overall, it's a good method for a teacher who doesn't know a whole lot about HOW to teach another person to play the piano!

I currently have some of my students on this level (Prep Course), and others on the regular beginner levels.I love how all of the different levels are interchangeable, so gifted students can advance more quickly, and students who need a little extra reinforcement can stay on the lower levels. The map for how this all works is on the back of all of the books, which you can see on the book preview. So many great things about Alfred!

5-0 out of 5 stars Piano Prep Course Book
Great piano book for young beginner student. My daughter loves it!Approrpiate for 5 -6 year olds.Very visual and easy to guide young beginners with learning the absolute basics to playing the piano.

5-0 out of 5 stars no other will do
My neigbour is teaching my daughter piano. She herself started to learn when she was very little and so did her older sister. Both used Alfred's back then and she still uses it for my daughter today. We went through 2 books so far and I am amazed how wonderfully my daughter plays already. I had to order a bunch more as my neigbour is teaching 5 of my daughters friends now also. They all use the Alfred books at different levels and love their piano lessons :o)
The great thing is that you look at the age or level of the student and you pick the appropriate Alfred's book level. The next book builds on and so on. Great system! ... Read more

Product Description
In 1886 a shy, middle-aged piano tuner named Edgar Drake receives an unusual commission from the British War Office: to travel to the remote jungles of northeast Burma and there repair a rare piano belonging to an eccentric army surgeon who has proven mysteriously indispensable to the imperial design. From this irresistible beginning, The Piano Tuner launches its protagonist into a world of seductive loveliness and nightmarish intrigue. And as he follows Drake’s journey, Mason dazzles readers with his erudition, moves them with his vibrantly rendered characters, and enmeshes them in the unbreakable spell of his storytelling.Amazon.com Review
Daniel Mason's debut novel, The Piano Tuner, is the mesmerizing story of Edgar Drake, commissioned by the British War Office in 1886 to travel to hostile Burma to repair a rare Erard grand piano vital to the Crown's strategic interests. Eccentric Surgeon-Major Anthony Carroll has brokered peace with local warlords primarily through music, a free medical clinic, and the "powers" of common scientific instruments, much to the dismay of warmongering officers suspect of such unorthodox methods. Drake is an introspective, well-mannered soul who, once there, falls in love with Burma and stays long past the piano-fixing to aid Carroll's political agenda. Drake's arduous journey to reach the outpost, however, takes far too long (nearly half the book) and the plotting is rather heavy-handed at times (one night, Drake learns of a mysterious "Man with One Story" who rarely speaks, and the very next morning the Man tells all to Drake). The story is ambitious, the language florid and sure to please, but the dialogue and melodrama are sometimes tedious. While out on the town with Carroll's love interest, Khin Myo (who enchants Drake), Mason offers the townspersons' view of Drake:

It is only natural that a guest be treated with hospitality, the quiet man who has come to mend the singing elephant is shy, and walks with the posture of one who is unsure of the world, we too would keep him company to make him feel welcome, but we do not speak English.... They say he is one of the kind of men who has dreams, but tells no one.
Drake's complexity is thin; perhaps the beauty of Burma takes over any real need for introspection. Despite these quibbles, The Piano Tuner is a memorable achievement. --Michael Ferch ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful writing but mediocre plot...
I began The Piano Tuner by Daniel Mason with great anticipation. What I discovered was beautiful writing with a mediocre plot.

The Piano Tuner opens in London in the late 1880s.Edgar Drake is a shy, unassuming and absent-minded piano tuner who has led a sheltered life.He receives a most unusual request from the British War Office to tune a piano in the jungles of Burma. The piano is an impressive Erard and is owned by Surgeon-Major Anthony Carroll.Carroll is eccentric and unorthodox, and although he does good work, he sometimes crosses the boundaries of what is acceptable to the British Army.Drake gets caught up in the beauty of Burma and the political turmoil--but not always with good results.

From reading The Piano Tuner, I could tell that Mason spent time in Burma (now Myanmar)and was most impressed with this country. But in The Piano Tuner, it seems like he takes pages and pages of descriptions and tries to insert a plot. The plot is not very engaging and I didn't find myself drawn to any of the characters.Drake, especially, was a bit pitiful.Mason's writing is beautiful and reflective in spots.Drake listens to a song of mourning, "But it wasn't a woman's voice, either.Soprano, yes, but not feminine, not even, Edward thought, human. He could not understand Burmese words, but he knew of what the man sang.Songs of loss are universal, he thought, and with the man's voice something else rose into the night air, twisted, danced with the smoke from the fire, and drifted into the sky."At other times, Mason's writing was tiresome as he described every tree, flower, river, bird, person, sound, tune and/or smell.

I have heard that Daniel Mason has written another novel that is much better than The Piano Tuner.I think he definitely has some talent but I am disappointed that this book did not live up to my expectations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Haunting, dream-like, lyrical.
One of my favorite books. Incredibly evocative. Dream-like. Reminds me in some ways of Heart of Darkness.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful
I found this book absolutely haunting...beautifully written and wonderful imagery....I can't tell you more without a spoiler alert:)

4-0 out of 5 stars Delightful book
I thoroughly enjoyed The Piano Tuner. The characters are beautifully drawn, and the historical details are fascinating.A great book for anyone who has ever dreamed of Shangri-La.

3-0 out of 5 stars What's Old is New Again
This revisit of "The Heart of Darkness/Apocolypse Now" could have easily been a hackneyed effort, but Mason manages to breathe life into a familiar story.Mason's prose is even and rich.He builds both character and plot with a steady, if at times heavy, hand, and allows the reader to explore changing landscapes within the novel along with his protagonist.

The juxtaposition of an out-of-tune European piano in the middle of the jungles of Exploration Age Burma is a great literary device to communicate 19th-century colonial arrogance and insanity. The journey of Mason's protagonist from the familiarity of his home in England to the exotic cultures of Southeast Asia and, ultimately, to the encampment of an unsettled and complicated ego holds reader interest.

The criticism mentioned in longer reviews is valid. But overall, "The Piano Tuner" is a solid first effort. ... Read more

Great songs, good arrangements ... but why can't we have spiral bindings?!?!?I'm a pianist.I need books that stay open and lie flat.

2-0 out of 5 stars Print is a little small... not as many "popular" songs as you are led to believe.
I found the book hard to read.My sight is fine but I think they tried to fit too much into the book. The music is fine but I found I only knew about 10 of them and honestly was not interested in the rest.It is also listed as "easy piano".I was able to site read some but this would be considered more of an intermediate level book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Had to ship this back as I wasn't clear what "Easy Piano" was
When I saw "Easy Piano," I was thinking of the fake books with the notes being printed with the note letter name on them.I think (now) that these are called "E-Z Books."It would always help to have ALL music books available on the website to SHOW the inside pages.I need to only buy the ones with larger print for one example and the above would have prevented me from seeing what is termed "Easy Piano." Amazon should make sure this is possible.Thanks. ... Read more

From the very first lessons in Book 1, students are making music as they explore the piano keyboard through fun improvisation pieces called My Own Song. The beginning of the book introduces finger numbers, the black-key and white-key groups, and basic rhythm patterns.Directional reading is taught first by finger number, then by note name, and then by interval (stop, skip, and repeat). Once the students are introduced to the staff, they learn reading guides Bass F and Treble G and read by interval in several different hand positions. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great start to piano!
My 5 year-old absolutely loves this book!He wants to practice the piano all the time so he can play along with his CD.Make sure you get the book that includes the CD.Sometimes it doesn't and that is the best part.My kids will even just pop in the CD to listen to it while they play with their toys. It is a great way to teach children to love the piano and learn rhythm.

5-0 out of 5 stars self-teaching, very easy to work with
This book is super easy to follow. We have a grandson who, from time to time, likes to play the piano. He did the first few lessons, stopped, then started again. It gradually introduces concepts.I help him some, but it is so easy to follow that he is able to pick it up very quickly.

I normally play the instructor accompaniment with him.It is actually very musical and really enabled him to get the beat quickly.

Will buy book 2 today!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent program for 6 year old.
I'm using this to teach my six year old, and couldn't be more pleased. It moves at a really slow, easy pace which is exactly what she needs. She does not feel overwhelmed and yet finds the exercise challenging. She also gets the songs stuck in her head.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for early learners
I bought this book at the same time as a couple of the John Thompson books.Even though I learned with the John Thompsons, I think this book is great for early learners because it starts simply with finger numbers and pictures of the keys, without trying to teach note reading at the same time.My five year old is really enjoying the book so far and is enthusiastic about learning the piano. He is young enough that if you try and fit too much into the lesson at once, he loses interest.I definitely recommend this book for young ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent learning tool
This is a great book for beginners. The very first day the student is playing a little song.Easy to follow and understand even if you have no prior piano experience. I have tried others and did not like them, but I would definitely choose this method again and recommend it to others. The price is very reasonable and it comes with the CD. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved It!!
I bought this book because I just started playing in my high school jazz band. This book is more oriented toward solo and small group jazz piano playing but it is still a valuable tool. I have been playing for about seven or eight years and I would consider my self to be advanced, so this book has really proven to be a challenge for me. The concepts in this book are very advanced so a beginner or intermediate should probably start with some more basic theory since this book assumes that you already know how the chord structures work and that you can read music in any key. The cd that comes with the book really explains a lot too. Overall I am very glad I bought this book

3-0 out of 5 stars Poor Binding! Careful!
When a book is focused on teaching jazz piano you would expect it to be able to rest easily on a piano or a music stand in order to be read. Unfortunately the binding is such that the book is always closing and the pages never stay open. The first time I used it I tried to "open the book" just a little bit so that the pages would stay open and I wouldn't have to hold them. Much to my surprise, the very first time I LIGHTLY folded the pages back, the pages fell out of the binding completely! It was like snapping a dried twig. Now I have a broken book with pages falling out of it.

Bottom line: Content is decent, but the binding is horrendous and renders the book useless.

5-0 out of 5 stars absolutely to be reccommended to serious jazz students & pros
I was genuinely surprised by the quality of this work. I am a classical pianist who has dabbled in jazz from time to time. This book, together with the Mark Levine's books (Jazz Theory, Jazz Piano, and Masterclass) have gotten me psyched up about jazz. Years ago, jazz books seemed a muddle to me (for example John mehegan's 4-book series and David Baker's stuff), mostly because I came from the classical 18th-19th century theoretical background. The only thing that worked for me was studying LPs until they wore out (my age is showing). I still study CDs deeply, but these books really help to fill gaps, at least as far as analysis goes. There is very useful information in this volume.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is an excellent book!
The book is very well organized. There is no deception on the part of the author or the publisher to sell this book. The details of the book clearly let you know what the book covers. As a student of jazz piano, intermediate, I find this book very helpful.I really like the way the author introduces the concepts and then gives examples and etudes to practice. It is one of the best jazz piano books I've bought. But it is not the only book I use to learn how to play jazz piano. You should have an open mind and study all you can from different books in order to progress musically. You'll find similarities in jazz beginner/intermediate piano books, but the good books, like this one, provide you with the proper guidance you need. In my opinion, Neil Olmstead "poured his heart out" in this book.As a music educator myself, I really appreciate the great effort Professor Olmstead put into writing this outstanding book.
In order to get another great insight on jazz piano improvisation, I also highly recommend the following book:
Mel Bay's Essential Jazz Lines: Piano Style of Bill Evans One of the authors of this book, Per Danielsson, offers a lot of great free guidance on jazz piano on the internet. Check out his web site.

I'm currently studying both books and I'm highly motivated to practice.Good luck with your jazz piano learning journey.

3-0 out of 5 stars This book works against itself
This book has a wealth of information for people who want to develop their left hand in order to play solo jazz piano. The problem is, the author expects the reader to laboriously plow through tons of non-intuitive etudes with strange right-hand melodic lines in order to practice his techniques. It would be much more helpful, and much less confusing, if the author just provided left-hand etudes, or less unorthodox melody lines for the right hand. I was excited to approach this book, but I was really looking for a much more straightforward approach. (If I wanted to learn to play like Tristano, I would transcribe a difficult Tristano solo.) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This book is just what I was looking for!Songs we sing in church that are not overly difficult to play for my kids who have had a number of years of piano lessons.I love the choice of songs. Also has keys written at the top of the music for guitar.Perfect for us!

2-0 out of 5 stars Praise/Worship Music
This book contained so many wonderful songs but I found it too difficult for my music ability. If you are an achieved pianist, this book is for you.Otherwise you might want to settle for a more basic book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent buy
Soooo glad I bought this songbook. I have 5 years piano training but have become rusty the past few years as wife & mom to 4 duties took over and no piano in our home to practice on. We just received a piano as a gift and I bought this book. It is easy but well written compliations for me to be able to sit down and play and sing together. Not so difficult that I have to really concentrate all the time. Recommend if you are looking for a relaxing piano book to play as it is not super difficult.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the beginner
As a learner I found the left hand bass notes very easy to follow. The selection of songs is wonderful and 90% of them are the songs we sing in church and include works by Darlene czchech, Chris Tomlin, Michael W Smith etc. You will know these songs and be able to play them. Excellent book - I am very glad I bought this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice selection

4-0 out of 5 stars Might not be what you think
This is the "Big Note" edition, so before you buy be aware that the sheet music is very simplified, and not the full piano score. We bought this and were a little irritated that this wasn't explained on the product info page (didn't realize what "Big Note" meant). Would be good for students or for someone looking for something a little more basic, so I'm not giving it a bad score. If you would like something more challenging (and accurate), you probably want the "Piano Solo" edition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wasn't true ENOUGH to original score for me
I usually don't mind the "big book" sheet music, as one can always add personal touches, but honestly, I have played the DVD quite a few times, and there are many places in this book of sheet music where it doesn't seem to pick up the essence of the original.

I began to wonder if my mind was playing tricks on me, so I picked up other versions of these pieces which were just a bit more difficult than this easy-to-play book, and found those melodies often far truer to the score than this. If the music from the movie is going through your head, you might want to shop around a bit for something a bit truer to the movie score than this.

The good news about this book of music is that 1) it's pretty easy to play, so you can sit right now and enjoy it (even if it wasn't quite what your ear was hoping for), and 2) the notes are large, for those of us who otherwise need reading glasses to see the music :>)

This wasn't what I wanted, but it will probably make many piano students very happy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Romantic Movie!
This movie was a little hard to get into, but once I watched it with full intent it has become one of my favorites! It's a love story without all the sex and innuendoes, so it leaves a lot to the immagination. It really puts you in their shoes and to feel how they must have felt!Wonderful storyline...

2-0 out of 5 stars for beginners
I was really disappointed with this product, I am not an advanced piano player but this was a really, really for beginners.I had to go back out and buy a more complicated version - total bummer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Would go for the "Self Teaching" version.
My son gave a as Father Day present the "Self Teaching" version, and it sure beat this one because Self Teaching comes with a CD and "Study Guide" sections. Most of other parts are identical.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for "older" children too.
I am a piano teacher and have been using this series with a very mature, serious minded child since she was eleven years old. She's been taking piano for two years and is ready for Level 3. I am using Suzuki materials with her too. She just began Level 4 in it. This book is not "babyish", so she liked practicing in it from the start. It moves along quickly, and since she practices regularly and is a member of band at school, she is making rapid progress. The solos are excellent for her sight reading skills. As new major and minor keys are introduced, I encourage her to play the exercises in more than one key, which reinforces the ear training she receives with Suzuki. It's an excellent course!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Service

5-0 out of 5 stars Higly recommended Piano Course Book
I highly Recommend Alfred's Basic Adult All in One Piano Course (I bought level 1, level 2 and level 3 ).

If you have no background in piano and/or music theory, I believe this book will guide you even from scratch, .... and by completing level 3 book, you will most likely can play very nice classical stuff (Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, Fur Elise, Bach's Works etc,) and also you will have ability to play pop, jazz, blues.

Why am I saying this? Am I eligible to make such a review? I think so.

I myself right now still studying the end of book 1 and some part of book2. But eventhough I am a beginner in Piano, I am quite advance (or at least a bit higher than intermediate)in classical guitar. In my younger day, I've spent sometimes teaching classical guitar atlocal music school, so at least I have some background/experience in teaching, playing and performing classical music and some music theory aswell.

Looking and browsing through all 3 books, I can see that these books are arrange in easy to follow and fun style, but still the content can be consider high quality.

5 stars without any doubt ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Aaron Piano Booklet
This product met my expectations. It's well written and I plan to purchase other music booklets from this author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Michael Aaron Piano Course Grade Three
This is the third part in a stimulating series designed to encourage the musicality of the budding pianist.Michael Aaron includes some theory with the lessons so that they can build a good foundation.

The songs get progressively difficult only in keeping with exposure in the lower grades, so that learners' confidence is not shattered too early on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Memories
I was so happy to get this.My original music was very worn and falling apart. It was fun to go back and play some of my favorites. The seller offered a good price and fast service.

4-0 out of 5 stars A challenging and excellent piano course, with some flaws
I'm an adult piano student, who started learning with some basic knowledge already under my belt (How to read some notes, how to count time, what sharps and flats are). I found this book the perfect beginning point. Each song challenges me and teaches me new principles. After playing the songs in this book, I find the songs in other lesson books easy to play from sight. Students might also want to pick up an easier book to play for fun and relaxation, as every song in this book will challenge your abilities.

A few notes:
* I would not recommend this book to someone who is starting with no knowledge whatsoever. The Michael Aaron Primer might be more appropriate, though I haven't tried it.

* I would not recommend this book to someone trying to teach themselves. The book is intended for use with a teacher who can explain some of the techniques. (You should be learning from a teacher anyway. I don't recommend teaching yourself piano; you'll learn to do many things wrong.)

* Anyone using this book should also be using the Performance, Technic, and Theory books for your grade level.

Finally, I have deducted one star for the following reasons:
* Some of the fingerings they recommend are funky. My teacher has had to recommend better fingerings several times, with great results.

* The layout and graphics are very outdated, including a potentially offensive drawing to go with the song "Chopstick Revels". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great adult piano course
This book is a great second book from Faber and Faber for adults to continue with their piano training.

5-0 out of 5 stars very well done
The piano specialist at my local sheet music store informs me this is currently the best-selling piano method for adults. It's not hard to see why.

I had a student who was going through Bastien's adult method, slogging along.I switched him to this one, and he started making sparkling progress. After a few weeks, I asked him what he was doing differently. He told me he just loved this book.

As a teacher, I can tell you this book doesn't go as deep as the Alfred's.It's only two books, whereas not only is the Alfred's three, but goes a lot deeper with the student before pronouncing him finished. At the end of book 3 of Alfred's, for example, the author proposes you play Fur Elise and Toccata in D Minor in their original forms. There's no way you're going to be able to do that after merely going through the 2 Faber books.

But I would say this book does have an advantage over the Alfred's:it chips away at your piano ignorance, so to speak.Every lesson is short and gradually incremental. There are no monsters in the book to stare down a student and discourage him.No, songs look easy to play and you get the feeling of making swift progress without as much intimidation. ...
