The American Horticultural Society's Plant Propagationis one of those stuck-on-a-desert-island books. All the informationyou could ever possibly want in order to propagate virtually any plantor tree or cactus or succulent that might be growing on said desertisland is to be found somewhere between the covers of this marvelous, informative book. If you're tired of buying many pots of expensiveperennials, tuck a copy of Plant Propagation under your arm andbuy one good specimen. From that specimen, following the simpledirections, make many plants. It's the kind of skill that allgrandmothers of a more distant generation seemed to have.

Stillmixed up about hypogeal and epigeal germination? Can't tell a bulbilfrom a cormel? The very first section covers all the basics of plantbiology as well as the history and basic how-to of propagation. Thebody of the book is divided into "Garden Trees," "Shrubs and ClimbingPlants," "Perennials, Annuals and Biennials," "Cacti and OtherSucculents," "Bulbous Plants," and "Vegetables." Each section beginswith an overview of appropriate propagation techniques: the manystyles of grafting, seed saving, taking cuttings, and bulb and rootdivision. Individual plants within each section are addressedalphabetically. With Plant Propagation in hand, you canhybridize your own rose and name it after yourself. The text iswritten to an intelligent, somewhat experienced gardening reader, andthe lush illustrations are accurate and effective. --SchuylerIngle ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, pictures and explanations
This book has lots of information, some of it is in the encyclopedia of gardening, but it is much more in depth and the book is about 1/3 the size.the book is perfect if you like do it yourself gardening.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I know nothing about plants, so I chose this book because it includes a background of how plant propagation began and evolved as well as multitudes of photographs and illustrations. Perfect for those visual learners wanting an overview of plant propagation and a quick reference for specific plants.

Very informative book lots of photos , to help teach the techniques. If you love plants this is a very fun book to own. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE ONE TO BUY
As an organic gardening instructor I teach many classes on propagation by cuttings, seeds, division, etc. This is the ONLY book you need to buy. I have purchased and resold a number of propagation books and this is the one I drag around to my workshops to show people. The photos in this book are excellent and make propagation easy to understand by someone who has never ever tried it before.Wholeheartedly recommended!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars you ever thought of propagating a plant, this is the book for you.
If you ever thought of propagating a plant, this is the book for you.The first time I needed to propagate a plant was when I couldn't find an azalea plant to match some that I already had.Propagation not only saved money, but also, gave me an exact match.

Product Description
The most comprehensive, detailed, and lavishly illustrated guide to garden plants ever published, first published in 1997, has now been completely revised to include nearly 250 new plants and photos. The AHS A-Z Encyclopedia of Garden Plants is an essential reference for all gardeners, from novices to experts.Amazon.com Review
Collecting contributions from 100 distinguished horticulturists, the handsome and lavishly illustrated American Horticultural Society A-Z Encyclopedia of Garden Plants is a truly definitive gardening reference. With its 1,092 tiny-print pages, this may not be the book to tuck into your pocket as you weed and mulch, but what this encyclopedia lacks in portability, it certainly makes up for in scope. Hardy and tender plants, heirloom varieties and the latest hybrids--they're all accounted for here, with growing tips and background information about native habitats and ornamental features. You'll also find a fascinating section about botany, as well as information about basic gardening techniques such as mulching, staking, pruning, propagating, and protecting plants for winter. But the encyclopedia's main attraction is the individual plant entries--more than 15,000 of them, embellished with 6,000 full-color photographs and illustrations. From the visual glossary of leaves to the map of growing regions, The American Horticultural Society A-Z of Garden Plants provides an unsurpassed wealth of botanical information, making it the yardstick by which all other gardening references must be measured. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous reference
Absolutely my favorite plant reference.A plant reference book with great pictures, great summaries and as complete a reference book as you will find anywhere. This is my second one.I bought one about 10 years ago, so I felt it was time for an update. It is still a wonderful reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars All I ever wanted to know ....and more.

Delighted to have been able to get a prized book at 1/8th the original price.
Arrived in a timely fashion,in very good condition. This is a reference book
I will have for the rest of my days and be able to pass on to other future gardeners.

2-0 out of 5 stars great pictures, bad info
like others have said .. the pictures in this gigantic book are slick and glossy.. there are tons of plants listed.. the problem is .... a lot of the info is wrong ... i have found the plant heights andzonesare different than other books such as hortus III, sunset western gardeners etc ... the pics are great ,, but i wont even opoen this book any more because i dont want the wrong info stuck in my head.... if they re-edited , corrected this book and added a little meat to the info it would be one of the best and the $50 would have been worth the money...

5-0 out of 5 stars Best source for garden plants
The book is great. It allows the garden enthusiast to research any plant, shrub or tree.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate resource
If you've ever been stumped when attempting to find information on an obscure plant then this is the reference manual for you. The A - Z is a remarkably complete book, I've yet to look up a plant that isn't listed, the information is concise and relevant. Due to the staggering number of plants listed the book is set up by Family/Genus/Species/Variety - don't let this stop you, half the fun of finding what your'e looking for is stumbling upon other interesting plants along the way.

If you can have only one book on plants this would be my choice, it's a wonderful book filled with many great pictures - as an avid gardener who has a large plant book library I can't recommend this highly enough. ... Read more

Designed to help gardeners choose plants in two different ways, the AHS Great Plant Guide features color photos, A-Z and planting guides, and cold-hardiness and heat-zone maps. Over 1,000 plants have full entries, full-color photographs, and details that tell you what type of plant it is, how it grows, what its ornamental features are, where it grows and looks best, and how to care for it. A special section on popular annuals and bedding plants has been added to this edition.Amazon.com Review
All new gardeners need a basic plant encyclopedia as one oftheir first reference books. This pocket-size guide is just that, agreat source for identifying and caring for plants from anemones toyuccas. Close-up color photos will aid any gardener attempting to namethat funny-looking flower by the door, or which type of maple isliving in your new back yard. Because this book is arranged alphabetically, completenovices will find it easier to search by looking at the pictures thanby using the names--quick, what's a papaver rhoeas?

Theplanting guide, which includes a brightly colored zonal map, isdivided into sections of both plant groupings (colorful foliage, goodin containers) and climate concerns (shade, drought). Bycross-referencing these areas, beginners will have a selection ofsure-fire winners for their first attempts. While you'll be temptedto dive right into choosing plants, take a moment to read theintroduction--you'll find the planting code hidden there, and it'sbetter to have those mysterious symbols decoded from the start.

Theglossy cover and sturdy binding make this a great little title to dragright out in to the garden with you. The cover wipes clean easily, andthe folding inside flap makes a handy place marker. --JillLightner ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars a nice compact reference book
This guide is pretty nice - at 6 x 4-1/2 x 2" it's almost half a cube of paper. Be warned, the print is fairly small (as it would have to be to fit in such a small book).

I bought this guide to help me identify flora that I take using macro photographic equipment, and it has proven to be helpful. Of course, the inherent problem is that when I try to caption a photo of a purple flower I have to look through the entire guide hoping to trip across a photo that looks similar. This leads to a lot of page flipping, which gets a bit tiresome with these small pages. On the other hand, its small size makes it easy to carry around, should you want to do that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Ready Reference
Great Ready Reference, not an exhaustive reference, but it provides more than enough of the most common plants in North America. It is small, but thick, and therefore is a perfect travelling companion to the garden center, or nursery for plant selection. The 'Heat Guide' is basically an inverse of the USDA Hardiness Zone Map, but does have some interesting uses.Within a few days of having received this book, I was well on my way to modifying my Spring Planting Scheme.Definitely a good addendum to any plant library collection.

2-0 out of 5 stars American Horticultural Society Great Plant Guid (American Horticultural Society Practical Guides)
Not a real user friendly book. It's small size would be nice if you wanted to take it say as a dictionary with you to the nursery. Otherwise, save your money. There are many many more books on the market that would be a better buy for your money.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's so handy...
The AHSGPG is a wonderful little book.It has practically every living plant known to man.Not only does it give descriptions on plants/trees/shrubs, but this book also gives you a climate planting guide, as well as suggestions on the different kinds of plants to plant in different areas of the U.S.Even small container gardens, shade gardens, full sun gardens along with different soil limitations. It's small size is what I love...small enough to tuck in a purse when going plant shopping!

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice book, but not for everyone
I think this is a very nice book; it is very informative. However, I was surprised when I received it that it was pocket sized and the typeface was very small. It can be difficult to read for some people. ... Read more

EASTERN REGION

This fully revised edition brings a new level of beauty, accuracy, and usefulness to the field guide that wildflower enthusiasts have relied upon for more than 20 years.

More than 940 all-new, full-color images show the wildflowers of western North America close-up and in their natural habitats. The guide has been completely revised to make identification in the field easier than ever. Images are grouped by flower color and shape and keyed to clear, concise descriptions that reflect current taxonomy.Amazon.com Review
This compact guidebook, produced to the National AudubonSociety's high standards of quality, gives full descriptions of morethan 650 species found east of the Rocky Mountains, along with noteson several hundred more. The eminently sensible organization relies onfirst-impression visible characteristics rather than the elaboratekeys of some older texts--a format well suited to beginning wildflowerenthusiasts. If, for instance, you wanted to identify a long-stemmed,tubular red flower that you found in a grove of loblolly pines, youwould first turn to the color plates, find the section devoted to redflowers, find a likely match from the 30-odd choices, and then turn tothe text to see that the flower's habitat and range made a good fit, ruling out those species that do not. After a few minutes' looking, you'll have identified a trumpet honeysuckle.Well written and richlyillustrated, this peerless guide makes the ideal companion for anexpedition to eastern wood or prairie. --Gregory McNamee ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent product
This book was a phenomenal buy for $0.60.The book new must have been over $25 with all the beautiful, glossy, color photographs of wildflowers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nature Lovers will Love It!
My husband has several National Audubon Books and I eventually want him to have the entire set. He especially loved this book as I gave it to him at the beginning of the spring. He is constantly referring to it to figure out what type of flower he saw. The pictures are beautiful and it is handy reference guide.

3-0 out of 5 stars Peterson has advantages
Since nearly everyone who reviewed this field guide thinks it's great, I want to share my experience. Full disclosure: I've used Peterson's guide in other areas, but not where I live now. This Spring I wanted to go out and identify wildflowers in a nearby park, and found that I had lost my copy of Peterson, but had a copy of the Audubon guide that someone must have given me. So I took this with me, and had a frustrating experience. There were two very common flowers that I saw that I couldn't clearly identify from the pictures in Audubon. One was white, five petals, long narrow leaves. When I got my hands on a copy of Peterson, I immediately identified it as Spring Beauty. The problem: Audubon only has a photo of this under pink flowers, although the description says "pink or whitish flowers"; Peterson has a drawing under both white and pink flowers. The second was a low buttercup-like yellow flower with heart-shaped leaves. I eventually decided, by elimination, that this must be Marsh Marigold, although the Audubon photo didn't show the leaves clearly. Peterson's drawing shows the leaf shape very distinctly, providing a secure identification.

Comparing the two guides in general, I find Peterson much easier to use, mainly because the pictures and descriptions are on facing pages; with Audubon, you have to flip between the two sections. Also, for me, Peterson's drawings are more helpful than Audubon's photos, because they emphasize the distinctive characteristics of the plant; although Audubon's photos provide more information overall, sometimes parts of the photo are out of focus or otherwise difficult to compare with the plant itself. However, Audubon's binding is much sturdier, and they provide additional information not related to identification (for example, that the leaves of Marsh Marigold are sometimes used as potherbs but should not be eaten raw).

5-0 out of 5 stars National Audubon Wild flower guide
This guide was exactly what we wanted. The pictures in color are the best I've ever had in one concise guide. If you are into wild flowers, this is the real deal.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not comprehensive
We live in Arizona so we chose the guide for the Western Region. However, on a recent trip to the Mogollon Rim the guide didn't have 5 out of the 7 flowers we found. We liked the layout but it just didn't give us enough flowers. That makes it a waste of our money. Very disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Propagation from a different angle
Several books are available on this subject and most are not very helpful beyond the most elementary. This book is very detailed and has many drawings showing each move. It is easy for the novice and yet being a British publication has several approaches to problems not found in most American books on the subject. Not a glossy book with colored garden views, but a very practical reference on the art of plant propagation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A genius of a little handbook, beautiful and smart
Without hesitation I would recommend this little (see the dimensions, above) book. It is a quick reference for US gardeners who seek guidance about year-round plantings.

The book sorts plants into six seasons: early spring; late spring; early summer; late summer; autumn; winter. Each plant has a small, but in most cases entirely adequate color photograph and an annotation which includes information about soil moisture preferences or tolerances, preferences or tolerances for sun or shade, hardiness zones and -- this is a pretty new one -- heat zone ratings (zones based on the average number of days with temperatures about 90F; there is a zone map inside the back cover) for plants. Fragrance is also noted, along with expected full size (height and width), and some information about culture and care.

This is not an encyclopaedia of plants; it's more of a digest. In many cases you may want to search out additional information. But what a great place to start. Its small size makes it the book to take on expeditions to nurseries and gardnes. Its durable cover and strongly sewn binding make me happily anticipate years of hard use.

A great little gift for any gardener, including yourself. ... Read more

Product Description
An understanding of the mineral nutrition of plants is of fundamental importance in both basic and applied plant sciences. The Second Edition of this book retains the aim of the first in presenting the principles of mineral nutrition in the light of current advances.
This volume retains the structure of the first edition, being divided into two parts: Nutritional Physiology and Soil-Plant Relationships. In Part I, more emphasis has been placed on root-shoot interactions, stress physiology, water relations, and functions of micronutrients. In view of the worldwide increasing interest in plant-soil interactions, Part II has been considerably altered and extended, particularly on the effects of external and interal factors on root growth and chapter 15 on the root-soil interface.
The second edition will be invaluable to both advanced students and researchers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mineral Nutrition of Higher Plants
This book covers a lot of aspects relating to Mineral Nutrition and Plant Growth, which can be a little heavy at times, for those requiring an easier read and if not fully conversant with all aspects of plant agronomy.
Would have liked the book to have had a section related to Soft Fruit and Vegetables and a little more on Planthormones.
However this is an excellent book for those wishing to delve deeper into the science of plant growth.

Excellent text for nutritionists, as well. I was looking for a text to help me better understand the nutrient mechanisms of plants. I wanted to better help my clients understand where nutrients lie within plants and what their role is in the growth and development of plant structure. Not the usual course, but the book greatly helped in this goal.

The text enabled me to bridge the gap between holistic nutrition and plant science. It provided me with another way to explain nutrient affinity in the human body by explaining plant development.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for all plant scientists
This book was the text for a course I took in plant mineral nutrition. It is extremely comprehensive. Our professor indicated that, despite its age, it is one of the very best books on the subject. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide to providing food & cover for wildlife
The book "Florida Plants for Wildlife" by Craig Huegel is exacly what the title says.It is an excellent guide to native Florida plants and trees. The plant descriptions are succint and easy to understand. The illustrations are helpful, however, it would have been more helpful to have color photographs insted of illustration drawings of the plants. The illustrations are fine, it is just my opinion that color photos would have been more helpful.

Product Description
Perspectives in Plant Cell Recognition presents a review of recent advances in understanding the cellular, molecular and genetic mechanisms governing cell-cell interactions in plants. In the case of the interaction between different cells of the same plant, most progress has been made in the study of gametes during sexual reproduction and the volume begins by considering this topic.Exciting progress in the study of associations between somatic cells crucial to coordinated tissue development is also reported. Interactions between plant cells and cells of other organisms are then represented by consideration of plant pathogenesis and examples of mutual symbiosis; the study of both of these areas has yielded significant information about this category of interaction. In particular, the Rhizobium/legume symbiosis has been studied extensively and the genes controlling the specificity of the interaction and involved in creating a harmonious mutualism have been cloned and their products identified. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference for your nature walks through unfamiliar territory
This book is an excellent reference book for the nature lover who isn't up to speed regarding the particulars. For each tree, there is a blowup photo of the leaves, a smaller one of the bark and a black and white sketch of the general appearance of the tree from a distance. There is also the English and scientific names and some textual explanation of the tree. This explanation is a paragraph description of the appearance, a paragraph on how to identify it and one sentence descriptions of the habitat and geographical range where it is found.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction for kids
Ok, this isn't the full blown Audubon Tree book(s), but at this price, what do you expect?

This and all the Pocket Guides are great stocking stuffers for kids, especially for those blessed with parents who think getting the latest Gameboy or Hero Clix is more important (hint hint, you know who you are).

As they get older, their interests will become more defined and you'll know what (more expensive/extensive) particular field guide(s) to buy them.

Yeah, it's cliche, but a child's mind *is* a terrible thing to waste.

I've bought all the Audubon Pocket guides more than once (kept a few for myself, yes they're that good) and I've only been disappointed with one (most of the photos were blurry). No, I won't say which one, as it may not matter to someone else (but I'm picky about that kind of stuff).

Hand them out to your nieces and nephews, and any other kid that can't tell an oak from a pine tree or quartz from slate or Pleiades from Orion or ... well, you get the picture.

They've thanked me later on(and actually meant it, lol) and they'll thank you too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Small enough to use while backpacking
I like these small Audubon books because they are light and easy to use.The pictures are clear and the information is easy to read and use. They aren't as detailed as the bigger Audubon books, but then the larger ones are heavier and in a back pack, being light weight is everything.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Bought this book to take on walks/hikes.The first time out I could not find anything on two out of the first four trees of which I was not familiar!!Very limited coverage of any trees other than those we all know from everyday experience---rather a disappointment!!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Handy Informative Guide for Trees
I bought this book because I was tired of only being able to identify a handful of the most distinctive trees. This small, colorful and easy-to-use guide was a godsend. It it paperback and can easily fit into abreast pocket, yet the full-page color photos of leaf shapes and sizes areadequate - even for a novice like me - to identify trees. It shows treesilhouettes, bark types and leaves and explains about various tree familiesto help us all be able to distinguish the trees from the proverbial forest! The information, organization and size of this book make it a"strong-buy" for anyone with an interest in "knowing"trees better! ...
