1-0 out of 5 stars Not Very Useful
I bought this thinking it would help me. It didn't. Also in the back of the book, they have Riccia and Java Moss mixed up. The pictures are switched backwards. I don't recommend this book if you are going to invest your time and money into a plant tank. There are better books out there people.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's just "OK"
Less than impressive small, thin paperback.Profiles only a small amount of species. There are at least a few errors: mislabeled photos and incorrectly identified species of plants and fish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Manual to have.
This manual is worht the money and is very helpful in the types of Aquarium plants that work best with different species of fish and water conditions. I found this maunual to be well worth the money and very helpful and it does have diagrams to show you exactly what you're being instructed on.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the price 4++ stars
This little book is a very good value. It covers more than 40 different plants in its encylopedia section in addition to itsglossary and several different info sections, including info on lighting, nutrients, selection and care. It gives more info about plants than can be obtained in the more general information books and is very inexpensive. It could be organized a little better but it is still very useful and very much worth the price.

1-0 out of 5 stars Where Are The Fish Supposed To Go?
There are books out there that are sensitive to the interaction of fish and plants. This is not one of them. Please invest a little more money and purchase one of those other books. The sample layouts are incredibly overcrowded. Even some of the photographs reflect the overcrowding! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best available
This is the must have book for people who live in the lower, middle or upper desert.Filled with useful information regarding good plants for desert or arid climates.I actually like the previous edition a little better, because it gave pictures of almost all the plants discussed. Probably the best book on the market for desert dwellers.

3-0 out of 5 stars Surprised & disappointed
My first purchase from Amazon worked out really well but this last one did not.The condition of the book was overstated. The content of the book is great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend
Highly recommend this book for anyone looking to grow anything in dry climates, whether you are a 'newbie' or not.Pictures and write-ups are excellent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative, but a bit daunting
This is one of two gardening books we bought after moving to Arizona two years ago; the other is "Arizona Gardener's Guide" by Mary Irish. Of the two, this is probably the more informative, but the wealth of information it contains is not presented in the most user-friendly way. Plants are listed using their proper botanical names (i.e. in Latin) rather than the common names that most people are likely to be familiar with. The photography is first-rate, and the "how to" explanations are mostly clear and easy to follow. If you live in Arizona, and only want to buy one book, I'd recommend the Arizona Gardener's Guide, as it is AZ-specific. If you live outside Arizona, this is probably the better choice -- although you might want to buy both, as they have different strengths.

Product Description
Winning entry, General Trade Illustrated Category, in the 2010 New England Book Show sponsored by Bookbuilders of Boston.

The Metamorphosis of Plants, originally published in 1790, was Goethe's first major attempt to describe what he called in a letter to a friend "the truth about the how of the organism." Inspired by the diversity of flora he found on a journey to Italy, Goethe sought a unity of form in diverse structures. He came to see in the leaf the germ of a plant's metamorphosis—"the true Proteus who can hide or reveal himself in all vegetal forms"—from the root and stem leaves to the calyx and corolla, to pistil and stamens. With this short book—123 numbered paragraphs, in the manner of the great botanist Linnaeus—Goethe aimed to tell the story of botanical forms in process, to present, in effect, a motion picture of the metamorphosis of plants.

This MIT Press edition of The Metamorphosis of Plants illustrates Goethe's text (in an English translation by Douglas Miller) with a series of stunning and starkly beautiful color photographs as well as numerous line drawings. It is the most completely and colorfully illustrated edition of Goethe's book ever published. It demonstrates vividly Goethe's ideas of transformation and interdependence, as well as the systematic use of imagination in scientific research—which influenced thinkers ranging from Darwin to Thoreau and has much to teach us today about our relationship with nature. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best version of Goethe's Metamorphosis of Plants to date
I appreciated the whole experience of reading this timely, photographically illustrated, version of Goethe's Metamorphosis of Plants.

The 'Introduction', written by Gordon L Miller, is a very succinct and clear summary of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's remarkable way of coming to know, 'from within',

the true nature of plants.

Especially impressive is the way Dr Miller has used his own sumptuous photographs to illustrate Goethe's key specific observations.

Yet a further surprise and delight is to find what is a relatively inexpensive book bound in such a lovely form.

All told, the book is a pleasure to hold, smell and read!

I will certainly be recommending it to as many people as I can. It should be read by anyone who takes an interest in the natural world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scholarly but stunning
First of all, this is an exceptionally beautiful book: compact in size, but neatly designed and illustrated with many photographs of flowers and plant parts that are printed with stunning clarity and color. The text is scientific but accessible, and because it is broken into short paragraphs, it never seems heavy. Goethe's idea is simple enough: he traces the morphological sequence from the first sprouts to the stem, leaves, flowers, fruit and seed of the next cycle, showing that the same formal principle is carried forth through each stage of the plant's development. Miller's introduction is succinct and illuminating. He also took the photographs and selected the other illustrations, including sketches by Goethe himself. The result is a scholarly treatment that anybody with an interest in plants can enjoy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Goethe's original approach to science
Goethe was not only a brilliant writer; he was probably one of the most original men of his time. Those of you who had read Werther or Faust will now know, because of this book, another of the not-so-well facets of Goethe, which was his passion for science. In this book, which is part of a reflection he had while travelling through Italy (trying to find, among other things, love) and while looking at some flowers in an Italian garden, he had the brilliant idea that a flower is a modified leaf. This becomes part of one of his most interesting ideas about development, which is the evolution of the forms, or the idea that forms are essential to understand plant and animal development. Some of these ideas, which modern plant science has recently demonstrated, are reflected in this book, which was a much needed and serious translation from his original German assay. It is also accompanied by very descriptive and beautiful images representing those flowers he mentions in his book and is also edited in an old style which makes it very appealing. I would say it is a book that is a pleasure to read and to keep! ... Read more

Product Description

Have you ever planted a beautiful, and expensive, shrub in your yard and watched it slowly die because it was in the wrong location? Not enough light, too much water, improper soil, or too hot an exposure can turn the nursery-perfect specimen into an eyesore. This all-in-one guide helps you beautify your yard, not with high-maintenance imports, but with native plants adapted to your local growing conditions. Whether as a foundation hedge, mass planting, or accent shrub, native species can provide year-round beauty to your yard. While the interest in native-plant landscaping and xeriscaping (sp?) has mushroomed, the necessary "how-to," "when-to," and "what-to" has been slow in coming. In this comprehensive, richly illustrated guide, George Oxford Miller describes the best of the best. Covering wildflowers, shrubs, trees, vines, cacti, and groundcovers, the book selects the species that combine ornamental qualities, growth habit, adaptability, and year-round beauty for the highest landscape value. Chapters with photos, maps, charts, and design samples provide guidelines for species selection and planting, ongoing maintenance, landscape design, and water and energy conservation. Plant descriptions and photographs provide detailed habitat requirements for each and illustrate how each plant looks and responds to landscape conditions. New and experienced gardeners alike will find the facts and advice needed to choose the plants best adapted for their particular landscape design. The unique botanical heritage of Texas provides a treasure chest of choices for home and commercial landscaping. The ornamental beauty of our native species and the economic advantages of using plants adapted to the local climate have demonstrated that the best for our yards sometimes comes from our own backyards, often literally as urban sprawl creeps across the prairies, hills, and forests of our state. But perhaps most importantly, using native plants encourages the repair and preservation of natural plant communities and the wildlife they shelter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Native Plants
Exactly what I was looking for in trying to determine which plants do well in Dallas, Tx during heat and drought.

5-0 out of 5 stars Native Texas Plants
Wow! What a fantastic reference book. I keep this book out all through the growing season and frequently check facts when I consider changing a plant out in my garden. The book has a lot of information pertaining to various growing regions of TX and that alone makes it a favorite of mine.

Each region has an assigned number and plants listed within the book are categorized as well, whether they are wildflowers, shrubs, groundcovers, trees, and so on. So if you're living in an area numbered 4 but you're searching for a certain plant with specific characteristics, you'd need to look for that plant and see if it will grow in your area. It's amazingly easy to use as a reference book and the photos are very nicely done too so you'll know what you'll be getting if your plant grows to maturity.

Successful gardening in TX is not always easy and if you're one of those who is adapting your landscape to year round water restrictions, this is a book that will help you through those transitions to a beautiful native TX landscape.

There are some books that are more than good--they are fabulous. And what makes this one so great? Pictures! And the right pictures...this is how it really looks...in a typical "garen" or landscaped area. That's what makes this book so fabulous. Product Description
No other single volume on native plants has such comprehensive horticultural coverage as Native Plants of the Northeast: A Guide for Gardening and Conservation. Nearly seven hundred species of native trees, shrubs, vines, ferns, grasses, and wildflowers from the northeastern quarter of the United States and all of eastern Canada are included. Of course, the natural ranges of many of the plants extend beyond this area, and the book is an essential resource for everyone interested in gardening with native plants of all kinds, as well as those who need the information provided here for habitat restoration and enhancement of biodiversity for the sake of conservation.

Natural plant communities of eastern North America are described, providing a foundation for the choice of plants for different areas and climates---or a variety of sites in the garden---as well as for restoration of native plant habitats. Illustrated throughout with color photographs, the encyclopedic portion of the book includes practical advice on cultivation and propagation in addition to descriptions, ranges, and information on hardiness. An appendix recommends particular plants for difficult situations and for attracting butterflies, hummingbirds, and other wildlife. Written from the unique perspective of an author who has professional credentials in horticulture, botany, forestry, and ecology as well as hands-on practical experience, this book is the most trustworthy single source for all who wish to cultivate native plants. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Native Plants of the Northeast
Well organized review of native plants (trees, shrubs, perennials).Plant profiles are succinct but useful.Photos are of high quality. This book is the perfect quick reference book for those interested in native plants.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Lifesaver!
I have scoured websites for information on non-invasive, native plants and find that overwhelming. Just received this book and it is clear and very helpful. I am a novice. I know little about gardening. But I want to be responsible in our landscaping. This book is a user friendly guide. I had purchased a shrub at a local nursery having been told by the owner that it was native and non-invasive. The shrub was not included in this book. That prompted me to go on the internet to find out more. Granted, I found out on the internet that the plant I bought is very invasive and non native but it was this book that prompted my concern.

I think this a valuable reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise, straightforward, and thorough
This book is a must for landscape architects and anyone involved highway beautification. It is also an excellent book for anyone looking to plant more of our beautiful native plants and eliminate non-natives on their land.

Nearly every plant description is paired with a full color photo of the plant in it's natural state.

Although this book is primarily designed for the Northeast, it also good for the Southeast and parts of the Midwest.

I would only make one suggestion to the author if he gets the chance to do a reprint; please include a section on the nuisance plants - poison ivy, poison sumac, stinging nettle, and the like. They may not be of use to many, but there are many of us that would like to find out more about them.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good info but too much Latin
This book has some excellent information, but the author has labeled all photos only in Latin. All plant description heading are also primarily in Latin, with small type below the Latin name that indicates the common name. This makes the book much more difficult to use for most people - only professional botanists could possibly benefit from this arrangement.

I have a Masters in Environmental Science, so I am quite accustomed to the role of scientific names. The purpose is not to replace common names or show off what a smarty pants you are, as this author appears to be doing. When there is a widely-used common name for a plant or animal, that name should be used, with the scientic name referenced afterwards. I'm sorry, but referring to a plant as Podophyllum peltatum when you could just say Mayapple is unforgivable. Further, if learning the Latin names is so darned important, then tell readers how to pronounce the Latin name.

I wonder how often the author says, "Oh look, the Odocoileus virginianushave been eating my garden." (That would be whitetail deer). At any rate, I am in the annoying position of having to jot down the common names under the pictures in the book so I can more easily learn the plants.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly useful book on native plants for gardening
This is an absolutely wonderful book on native plants of New England. It has just about every native plant I've ever heard of, with beautiful pictures, detailed descriptions, useful information.Every plant has the zones it will grow in, soil preferred (including moisture - very useful!) and the light the plant will tolerate. In addition, it describes the plant attributes, how to propagate, the natural range of the plant, and most plants have specific cultivars picked out as superior, and sometimes what roles the plant plays in the ecosystem.Almost every plant has a photograph.Incredibly useful.

I love how the book is organized - by type of plant (fern, grass, shrub, tree, vine, etc), then by latin name. There's a comprehensive index if you don't know the latin name. Also incredibly useful is the set of lists in the back - plants that tolerate wet soil, plants for dry soil, plants that tolerate shade, plants for butterflies and hummingbirds, plants with fruits for birds, plants with fruits for mammals - all organized by the light tolerance of the plant and plant type. Also useful was the introduction, which describes the different kinds of plant communities.

There are more detailed reference books out there, but as far as a good reference for the ordinary gardener, with COLOR pictures, this is the best! ... Read more

The plant propagation techniques that you'll learn in this book are simple to do and easy to learn, and they work incredibly well! If you already have a green thumb you'll love this book. If you don't have a green thumb, be prepared, you are likely to amaze yourself. Finding a beautiful plant and being able to reproduce that plant as many times as you like is a thrilling experience and it can be quite addicting. Since gardening is very therapeutic, that's a good thing. Learning how to propagate your own plants can result in a great deal of savings and/or earnings. Everyone in my family, from nieces and nephews to grandmas and grandpas, spent some time dabbling in our nursery. Our two sons learned work ethics and the value of a dollar. They also learned to appreciate, and at times be awed by, nature. It took me 35 years of crawling around in the dirt on my hands and knees to learn what I share with you in this book. Reflecting on those years I cannot think of a more rewarding way to spend the better part of my life. It is my sincere hope that you share what you learn in this book with the children in your life. Kids love to garden, and there is no better way to spend quality time with a child than teaching them how to garden. Plants are the heartbeat of the earth. If we can teach kids how to propagate plants, care for them, and admire and respect the plants of this planet, you and I will leave this earth in very capable hands. Jump in, get dirty! Get lost in the magic of plant propagation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Edible Wild Plants: A North American Field Guide (1990 edition)
I have read, and thoroughly studied, several books of this type and found "Edible Wild Plants: A North American Field Guide" a gem and to be the most immediately useful. Having information arranged by season, mapped to general location, many color photos, thorough data and explanations, plus quick margin keys for use/caution/danger are handy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Job!
It arrived exactly as described and was brand new looking. The cover is not even bent. Thank you!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for the outdoorsman/woman!!!
I just got the new version, because the old one was worn out! This book has a multitude of info on a lot of plants in an easy to navigate system! I love hiking with this book in hand and I take it on every outdoor excursion. On Amazon its at a great price.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for west coast people
I live and travel around the western US and found very few of the editable plants listed to be available in this area. The book otherwise looks pretty good and is very detailed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for North America
This book is probably the best on the subject that I've reviewed, especially for the novice. Excellent illustrations, descriptions and uses provided. If you are looking for a edible plant book to get you across America and can only have one, this book is it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great guide
This book is exactly what I was looking for. It has very clear well taken photographs (not sketches). Clear descriptions of each and every herb. Slightly large for a "field guide" but thats ok as this isnt what that is. Its a perfect reference book. I was not aware of just how many local plants are actually used!! I pull some of these out of my garden or lawn regularly and now I know that I can pull them and then use them. I would and have recommended it to many people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book
I purchased this book for an ethnobotany class and it's proved a great resource. The pictures and descriptions help in identifying the species without going into too much detail for people who don't know plant morphological or reproductive terminology.
Very useful book for learning about edible and usable plant species.

4-0 out of 5 stars great book
Just got this book today and have to say,It's very good. It's "to the point".It doesn't go into a whole lot of unnecessary detail. It gives you a good base to identifying plants. Shows habitat, edibleness, blooming cycles, medicinal uses and warnings in BIG BOLD LETTERS.It's in alphabetical order so if you don't already know what you're looking at, it takes quite a bit of time to find the plant in the book and identify it.That's the only negative I can say.

2-0 out of 5 stars minimally useful and lacking in significant detail
This book has descriptions of edible and medicinal species but scant information about the chemical constituents of medicinal varieties, little or no information on medicinal preparation, and only cursory notes on food use and preparation. It's not practical as an identification manual since it has no keys and organizes all species alphabetically rather than taxonomically.Furthermore, the writing is dull and too often opinionated with little or no support for the author's positions concerning sustainable foraging and the dangers of toxic medicinals. The reader is frequently told "Don't mess with this plant" or admonished not to pick it without being told exactly why or given citations for further reading. If Mushrooms Demystified sets the standard for highly informative, surprisingly entertaining, and down right useful guide books, this book fails to come even remotely close to that standard. That aside, if you plan on seriously learning to identify and ingest wild edibles, you might want this book in your library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well done Tilford!
I have to give Tilford credit for preparing a great book. Don't let the title of this book fool you into thinking that it will only be useful for the western U.S. or Canada. This book would be a great addition to any forager or herbalist in the U.S. or Canada because at least 50% of the plants found in this book can be found in the east. The pictures are crisp and because of his knowledge of herbal medicine he offers thorough insight on warnings about plants where other authors lack. Has a great introduction and the plants are organized alphabetically by common name...not standard practice but is probably more useful for the amateur botanist. His index provides quick access for those more familiar with scientific names. Two major parts in this book "Edible and Medicinal Plants" and "Toxic Plants and Advanced Medicines". Each plant account has common and scientific names of the plant and its family followed by the defining characters. The bloom period, habitat range, edibility , look-alike plants, medicinal uses and any warnings are also included. The "Toxic Plants and Advanced Medicines" section contains 21 species and is very informative. Contains a brief but useful glossary and his "Bibliography and Recommended Reading" looks like it has some useful books to investigate. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Armitage Appreciator
This is a good book for the gardener who wants to "go native" with attractive flowering plants. When I purchased this book on line, I was looking more towards the "native" side of prairie use and not ornamental horticulture use per se. I think the mistake is mine; Armitage does a wonderful job of discussing and displaying attractive native flowering plants for the garden area. If you like this book and want more detai. look into his defining book on perennials: Herbaceous Perennial PLants, A Treatise on their Identification, Culture, and Garden Attributes. I believe it is without equal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Armitage's Native Plants
I received this book very quickly and in excellent condition, exactly as described.I find Armitage's books (this is my third) to be informative, beautifully illustrated, and entertaining to read. The author is witty and opiniated, besides being very well informed.I look forward to ordering more of his publications, especially if Amazon makes them available!

5-0 out of 5 stars Armitage's Native Plants for North American Garderns
Really great book.I got it from the library and just couldn't get enough of it....so I bought it and am glad I did.Great conversational writing makes it a joy to read.Really helps you figure out what plants will work best for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book on Gardening with Natives
I gave this book as a gift and have heard wonderful things about it.This book is very useful for help planning for choosing native plants and for figuring out where to plant natives in a garden.

4-0 out of 5 stars Armitage's Native Plants
Good presentation of native plants, but could have more photos of some of the more obscure species. The book is slanted more toward the southeast and east U.S.Representation of western species is not as strong as it could be, but overall a very interesting book. ... Read more

Product Description
With the focus on return on investment and new technologies, the power industry today is much different than it was years ago. A unique set of management skills is necessary to supervise construction or retrofitting of a power generation plant, given today’s bottom-line emphasis on environment, fuel efficiency, up-to-date technical features, and the industry’s loss of experienced craftsmen and supervisory personnel. This book explains the power of economics behind the industry and how to manage the finances of work activities. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
In the lowlands of the Pacific Northwest, from southern Oregon to British Columbia, the plant and animal life is rich and vast. Previously anyone interested in identifying and learning about the fauna and flora has had to consult a different book for each life form: a tree book for the Pacific yew, a wildflower guide for Indian pipe, and some other reference for garter snakes. In this guidebook, Eugene Kozloff has compiled a general natural history of the region, including about 450 species of plants and animals. In order to be as thorough as possible and still preserve the portability of the book, the author has included those species that are fairly common, widely distributed, and can be easily identified by nonspecialists. This book is substantially complete for trees, shrubs, vines, major wildflowers, ferns and fern allies, and amphibians and reptiles. A few especially abundant or conspicuous mammals are discussed, and there are helpful suggestions for beginning the study of birds of the region. Also included is a wide selection of mosses, liverworts, and lichens, as well as the more common snails, slugs, millipedes, centipedes, and certain other invertebrates. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you live in, or will be visiting, the Pacific NW- this book is a must!
If you're going on a hike or camping trip this summer- bring this book with you and you'll see the wild around you in a whole new way! I bought this book for a college biology class, but have used it far more for hiking and camping around Oregon and Washington. The book reads like a friendly conversation with a fun uncle who spends all his time in the woods and wilds. It's like having your own David Attenborough along. The beautiful color photos are a plus, too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Plants and Animals of the Pacific Northwest by E.N. Kozloff
This is the best PNW plant and animal identification book on the market (and I have lot of such i.d. books). Lots of really good color pictures and detailed b/w's. Informative text on life history/cycles. Good index andwell-organized. Great for helping children get going on school projects(the Latin names are there, but the text is plain English, flows well, andprovides information that interests ordinary persons of all ages who enjoythe out-of-doors). Would make a nice gift for someone new to the area orotherwise interested in the topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a beautiful book!
I fell in love with wild plants at the tender age of 11 when I went to camp with my 5th grade class. We did plant identification and I became intrigued by all the wonderful plants in the NW. WHen I got home I pouredthrough my mom's copy of this book. I had been seeing it on our coffeetable since I was like a tot! I fell in love with plants. This book hasbeautiful color pics of all kinds of wonderful plants and animals. It'sawesome! ... Read more
