5-0 out of 5 stars An excellently titled book
This is a great introduction to wetlands ecosystems! This book begins with an introduction to what a wetland ecosystem is and how it works, giving examples of wetlands in various parts of the US. Each type of wetland ecosystem is presented with a list of plants and fungi found there described in moderate detail, including their niche in the ecosystem. Plants and fungi that may have special interest to the reader are examined in more detail at the end of this section. This book also covers the year-round changes in this ecosystem, tips on observation, specimen collection, and on keeping a nature journal. A section at the end of the book offers various activities and investigations that the reader may find interesting and helpful in understanding more about this threatened ecosystem.

This book would be a great read for anyone who is interested in nature, wetlands, or being a naturalist. It is not so detailed that beginners would be overwhelmed and not so simplistic that a moderately experienced naturalist would find it too light. I checked it out of the library but immediately ordered my own copy! I especially recommend this title to anyone who is interested in nature journals or just plain learning more about the world around them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A clear, helpful guide
I gave this book to my dad for father's day because he lives on 80 acres of wild land in MS, and he had mentioned how he would love to know more about the plants he comes across in the woods. This book is perfect! It is easy to follow and to find the plants you are looking up. This isn't a huge deal, but the book has a little built in ruler on the back cover (how cute!)It's definitely something that a novice can use on their own. I'm excited to hear my dad report back on what he's found.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Like It!
This is a great book for the everyday wildflower admirer. Putting the flowers in a color spectrum format is such an easy way to find a photo of a flower you are trying to identify. I carry my digital camera with me on trips, so when I see something in the field that I haven't seen before, I take a picture and then compare it with photos in the book. One of the most interesting features in this book is all the additional information on Native American's medicinal uses, food preparations, and toxicities to humans and livestock. This makes for a very interesting read on each flower. It is apparent that the authors have dedicated many hours to this book with beautiful photographs and a world of knowledge for the novice botanical enthusiast!

2-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing
A large number of very common Texas flowers cannot be found in the book. Just to name a few: White flowered milkweed (Asclepia Variegata), Green milkweed (Matelea Reticulata), Sandwort (Minuartia drummondii), Evening-star rain lily (Cooperia drummondii), White dandelion (Pinaropappus roseus)are not even mentioned, and that is just a few of the white flowers I can easily find in my land in Colorado and Edwards counties; it would take too long to enumerate all the relevant flowers the book misses. Only one species of Fleabane in the book, index shows Dandelion in page 123 but actually it is in page 113."Wildflowers of Texas" by Geyata Ajilvsgi, Shearer Publishing,ISBN 0-940672-73-1 is a much better book.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
This is a great book.It has great pictures and the descriptions of uses for these plants are really interesting. There are only two things that I don't like about this book and I can live with both of them. The first is that it is not as obvious as it could be which picture goes with which description. It can easily be figured out, but not having the name right next to the picture makes it a little harder to associate the name and picture when learning the plants. The other is that extra detailed photos of some plants are relegated to the end of each section rather than placed near the plant that they apply to. However, in spite of these few small flaws, I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction and good comprehensive key to Kentucky plant life...
Jones' book is a much needed contemporary and comprehensive volume to the vascular flora of Kentucky. But be warned, the keys focus mainly on the reproductive stages for identification and the illustrations are somewhat vague. The book has an excellent first hundred or so pages which introduces the history of floristic botany and conservation in Kentucky, the state's physiographic conditions, and different habitats and plant communities. The book also contains an extensive glossary (a big help). All together a valuable addition to the professional or amateur botanist's library. ... Product Description
Understanding the flowering plants of any region begins with the recognition of families. This remarkable volume, created to serve students, professionals, and other plant enthusiasts, covers 130 temperate to tropical families common in North America with detailed illustrations and modern referenced commentaries. Each family discussion includes a diagnosis and summary of characteristics, distribution data, important economic members, and pollination ecology. The book's most striking feature is Zomlefer's 158 original pen-and-ink plates depicting intricate dissections of 312 species.

The content of the family discussions is geared to readers who have completed one introductory biology course. For readers less familiar with botanical terminology, Zomlefer provides an illustrated glossary of 551 terms with more than 300 drawings. Other important tutorial features are twenty-two detailed charts that compare pertinent characteristics of certain related plant groups and a general chart that summarizes the salient features of the families covered in the text. Both amateurs and professionals will particularly enjoy the chapter on examining, dissecting, and sketching live material. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but not for the beginner
This is the last word in botanical family id.

But the vocabulary is very dense, which makes Plant Identification Terminology: An Illustrated Glossary an essential adjunct to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Guide to Flowering Plant Families
The book is just fine ... that's why I ordered it ... it's a good book.

However, I thought I was buying the book USED at a less-than-new price. The price I actually paid was the new price. And I did receive a new book, thank you.

My question:Why didn't I pay for and receive the USED book that I wanted?I wonder if there is something in the ordering process that I missed. This is the first book order from amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for a beginner
I got this book because I needed to learn about plants and I needed a no nonsense, basic introduction to the plant families of the world--not just trees, not just herbs, and not just information from one part of the world. This book is all that and more. The descriptions of each family use botanical terminology, there are clear line drawings of the taxonomically informative characters, and economically important species are listed in each family.Because I am not an expert on plants, I can't comment on the accuracy of the information, but I can say that this book has been a great resource for me, as a novice botanist. My only complaint (and this is a minor one, because this is not supposed to be a field guide) is that I am unfamiliar with many of the families and color photos would really help me to learn to recognize the plants in nature.I highly recommend this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Guide to Flowering Plant Families by Wendy B. Zomlefer [Paperback]
*****This should be a five star rating but something happened when I wrote the review so I can't change the star rating.Suffice it to say that this is a very comprehensive book with wonderful black and white illustrations.A very useful guide for students of botanical art or for anyone interested in plants.

3-0 out of 5 stars Missing Families

Product Description
Winning entry, General Trade Illustrated Category, in the 2010 New England Book Show sponsored by Bookbuilders of Boston.

The Metamorphosis of Plants, originally published in 1790, was Goethe's first major attempt to describe what he called in a letter to a friend "the truth about the how of the organism." Inspired by the diversity of flora he found on a journey to Italy, Goethe sought a unity of form in diverse structures. He came to see in the leaf the germ of a plant's metamorphosis—"the true Proteus who can hide or reveal himself in all vegetal forms"—from the root and stem leaves to the calyx and corolla, to pistil and stamens. With this short book—123 numbered paragraphs, in the manner of the great botanist Linnaeus—Goethe aimed to tell the story of botanical forms in process, to present, in effect, a motion picture of the metamorphosis of plants.

This MIT Press edition of The Metamorphosis of Plants illustrates Goethe's text (in an English translation by Douglas Miller) with a series of stunning and starkly beautiful color photographs as well as numerous line drawings. It is the most completely and colorfully illustrated edition of Goethe's book ever published. It demonstrates vividly Goethe's ideas of transformation and interdependence, as well as the systematic use of imagination in scientific research—which influenced thinkers ranging from Darwin to Thoreau and has much to teach us today about our relationship with nature. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best version of Goethe's Metamorphosis of Plants to date
I appreciated the whole experience of reading this timely, photographically illustrated, version of Goethe's Metamorphosis of Plants.

The 'Introduction', written by Gordon L Miller, is a very succinct and clear summary of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's remarkable way of coming to know, 'from within',

the true nature of plants.

Especially impressive is the way Dr Miller has used his own sumptuous photographs to illustrate Goethe's key specific observations.

Yet a further surprise and delight is to find what is a relatively inexpensive book bound in such a lovely form.

All told, the book is a pleasure to hold, smell and read!

I will certainly be recommending it to as many people as I can. It should be read by anyone who takes an interest in the natural world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scholarly but stunning
First of all, this is an exceptionally beautiful book: compact in size, but neatly designed and illustrated with many photographs of flowers and plant parts that are printed with stunning clarity and color. The text is scientific but accessible, and because it is broken into short paragraphs, it never seems heavy. Goethe's idea is simple enough: he traces the morphological sequence from the first sprouts to the stem, leaves, flowers, fruit and seed of the next cycle, showing that the same formal principle is carried forth through each stage of the plant's development. Miller's introduction is succinct and illuminating. He also took the photographs and selected the other illustrations, including sketches by Goethe himself. The result is a scholarly treatment that anybody with an interest in plants can enjoy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Goethe's original approach to science
Goethe was not only a brilliant writer; he was probably one of the most original men of his time. Those of you who had read Werther or Faust will now know, because of this book, another of the not-so-well facets of Goethe, which was his passion for science. In this book, which is part of a reflection he had while travelling through Italy (trying to find, among other things, love) and while looking at some flowers in an Italian garden, he had the brilliant idea that a flower is a modified leaf. This becomes part of one of his most interesting ideas about development, which is the evolution of the forms, or the idea that forms are essential to understand plant and animal development. Some of these ideas, which modern plant science has recently demonstrated, are reflected in this book, which was a much needed and serious translation from his original German assay. It is also accompanied by very descriptive and beautiful images representing those flowers he mentions in his book and is also edited in an old style which makes it very appealing. Product Description
Pennsylvania, a state of diverse geography and geology, is rich in flora. The Plants of Pennsylvania provides a means of positively identifying the more than 3,000 species of flowering plants, ferns, and gymnosperms native or naturalized in the Commonwealth.

The manual includes keys to families, genera, and species; extensive diagnostic illustrations; scientific and common names; and data on distribution ranges, relative frequency, rare and endangered species, blooming and fruiting periods; with taxonomic notes and an illustrated glossary. The information meticulously reflects the plants as represented in Pennsylvania and is derived from specimens collected within the state.

Developed in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Flora Database project, and compiled by botanists at the Morris Arboretum, the official arboretum of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, The Plants of Pennsylvania is an authoritative, accessible guide to Pennsylvania's plant life. It will be indispensable to taxonomists, conservationists, ecologists, foresters, land planners, teachers, agricultural county agents, students, and amateur naturalists. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Hard-core Taxonomy
Plants of Pennsylvania is an exhaustive taxonomy of the fauna of the keystone state. Both native and introduced species are included. It is not light reading, but as a reference it is excellent.

The cover artwork is not representative of the text, which contains only line drawings of good quality. The book is well indexed, by both scientific and common names, and probably is the best entrance point for most readers. I found theglossary particularly helpful. It has illustrations and definitions of hundreds of mostly obscure botanical terms that a few of us forgot and most of us never learned. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was hoping for
I planted a wildflower meadow on our property and I was hoping that this book would help me to identify the plants before the flowers bloomed. All the books that I've seen on wildflowers start with looking at the flower and going from there and this one was no different. Instead of pictures - there are drawings - some of which are a bit deceiving.

5-0 out of 5 stars Newcomb's is the best!
Newcomb's Wildflower Guide is the best such guide available. As a botanical illustrator it's very important to me to see really accurate drawings -- this guide has them. Also I like very specific guidance about the plant, such as: number of petals, leaves opposite or alternate, type of fruit, etc. This guide tells you all the facts. Many so-called guides are organized by color, leaving you to flip through a sea of yellow-flower pages. Not Newcomb! He provides a rational and easy-to-follow key which leads you to the plant you seek.
This is not a new edition, but a reprinting with a nice new cover.THE BEST !!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
Fantastic information, very informative, teaches you how to identify the wildflowers.**IMPORTANT** read the first several sections explaining how to use the book, particularly "The Key System and How it Works."It will make your research MUCH more efficient. What this guide lacks in color photos, it gains in really helping the novice identify wildflowers on your own.Excellent guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adapit for the South
I bought an old (hardcopy) edition of this in the 80s and I still use it.You can key many flowers down to a famlily or group of species (or even species). Then use your state's/region's big thumpin' botany book, internet plant atlas, or field ecologist to find the species. Botanists are dismayed that it doesn't have a dichotomous key--which means it's great.I have used it in Kentucky, Virginia, Louisiana, North Carolina, and North Florida. I carry it in my vehicle to keep it handy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Wildflower Guide
Yes, it is for the Northeastern US and Canada, and it covers that area rather well.I live in North Carolina. Most of the plants are here although we have additional species not covered. But I can usually get close enough that I can then go for the extreme detail of Manual of the Vascular Flora of the Carolinas. (I have both editions of this Souteastern bible and both editions of the companion Wild Flowers of North Carolina that has color photos).

If I think I know the plant I can look in the index for the botanical or the common name and then go to those descriptions. The key is excellent and easy to use (I don't have to keep going back to the glossary for every other term). If I don't have the plant in front of me I can check variations quickly.

The plant drawings provide detail that photographs usually don't.If you're just looking for color then the other guides should be sufficient, but this guide provides the detail I don't get from the other guides.
