Polish is more complex
This is a very basic course to say a few phrases in Polish to show an attempt to speak a highly inflexed language (nouns are declined verbs are conjugated). They change a lot.The course does not clarify, if I am using the familiar form of a phrase or the formal form of a phrase. Europeans do take the"familiar form" offensive until they give you permission to use this form. Also there are both a male and a female form for the past tense which the Booklet does not explain this usuage by putting (m) or(f)after the phrase. I have used other editions of In-Flight languages, they need to arrange words and phrases at the beginning to be shorter and native speakers to be slower.

Disappointed
The CD contains all the information that is stated on the cover.But the structure of the content is difficult to use.Things are repeated but not directly after they have been said and there are no pauses to allow you to reapeat the words or phrases e.g.

One, two, three, four

One, two, three, four

Rather than

One, pause, one, pause
Two, pause, two, pause

Although it is not ideal I have used the CD and I am now able to mumble a few words of Polish.So the produces of the CD could argue that it did what it was designed to do.

AWEFUL!
I am going to Poland and thought something like this would be easy to review before I left.The CD is absolutely aweful.They simply say a few words each lesson (no breaking them down or anything like that) and then say you are done.I didn't learn anything.Polish is difficult to pronounce, and just saying a few words DOES NOT CUT IT! ... Helped me through my Beginning Polish class!
I bought this book hoping that it would be as useful as my 501 German verbs book during high school.It was.I was able to keep up with my verb conjugation and experiment with new words for my assignments without as much worry.

It could use a few more verbs, but for a beginner or intermediate Polish course, this is just perfect.

Get the newer version
While 201 Polish Verbs is OK and available at many bookshops, insist on the more clearly written and newer 301 Polish Verbs by Klara Janecki.201 Polish Verbs was published in the 1970s and appears to have been written on a typewriter in published exactly as the manuscript was submitted.While it's not a BAD book, 301 is much better. ... Good book for intermediate learners
This is the sequel of the book titled 'First year Polish' written by the same author.This is a book for people who already have a good basic knowledge of Polish grammar.

There are plenty of exercises and readings, the grammar is also well explained.There are 12 lessons in this book, and most of them are divided into dialogues, vocabulary, "Uwagi" (notes), exercises, readings and their vocabulary and a few questions about the reading.Lesson 12 is a review of the most important aspects of Polish grammar.The book also has plenty of cartoons, in Polish of course, and several black and white pictures which make the book more enjoyable to read.

In the introduction it says that this book is well suited for independant study.However, there is no answer key for the exercises, which are a bit repetitive sometimes, but if you have Polish friends who can help you with pronunciation and grammar, then this book is a must-have.

The reason why I did not give this book five stars is because the book was printed in 1986.Therefore, some of the information is not up-to-date.There are also audio tapes available for this book, but I think it is time for Slavica, i.e. the publishers, to upgrade to audio CDs.

I definitely recommend this book.

Good, but could be better.
As a phrase book, it's great.I found it quite helpful in our short visit to Poland.However:

As a source of definitions for many commonly used words in Polish,it could be much better.When I tried to use the dictionary section with a Polish family we were living with, they decided it was not very useful to them.
Also, many of the words used in the phrases (and their English equivalents) are not included in the dictionary portion of the book, so sometimes it's difficult to find the phrase you want to use.

Learning Polish
This little pocket book contains solid Polish grammar and vocabulary information; it concentrates on popular phrases that one would need when traveling. It's small size is very handy and graphics help follow the book without confusion.

Lonely Planet or Berlitz?
This phrase book is meant to provide Berlitz some competition.I consider LP to be slightly more useful because i) short paragraphs are included about important social behavior and ii) there are more words in the dictionary.I found the arrangement in LP better for studying.Berlitz addresses a greater variety of situations. ...
