An important book worthy of becoming a classic
This is a very clearly written book. Hallibuton is such atalented writer and presents sometimes very difficult concepts with such effortless simplicity. One important aspect of this book is the way in which different ideas anddifferent chapters are tied together. For example, the writter explains the infinite-alleles model and then goes on to describe why such a model could be useless at the molecular level, hence the need for an infinitely-many sites model. All the chapters are classic reading; his Chapter 4 on Recombination, Linkage and Disequilibrium in particular is a real treat. Halliburton also gives a very decent treatment of Coalescent Theory and even goes on to descibe extensions of it in the case of selection, population subdivision and recombination.

This is a very recent important book, and a most deserving competitor to Hartl and Clark's "Principles of Population Genetics". It has my highest recommendations. ... Read more

Reflects Today's State of the Art
This text is basically an anthropology textbook on human evolution that integrates the latest biological and cultural research. It comes from the merger of genetic analysis and cultural anthropology. The authors see a co-evolution of genes with culture that helps to define the organism and the environment in which they live in which both are acting as cause and effect.

An Essential Text
This is a good book for someone with a sound grasp of Mendelian genetics, familiarity with molecular genetics, and some experience with population genetics who wants to step up their understanding two or three levels. The math is at the level of a graduate course in genetics, but not too theoretical, and Weir points out where some of the modelling gets lost in the weeds.

Parts of the book are a tough slog, not because of any flaw in the book, but because it compares allelic, gametic, and population frequencies with recessive and multiallelic traits. Which makes for some painful reading, but the reader will be left with an appreciation of how often genetics papers ignore common scenarios that would make their results ambiguous. And if someone wants to do higher order statistical analysis, this is where they need to go to see how variables are calculated. This is crucial, because many of these variables are fairly similar, but havedifferent sets of assumptions.

Reading this book requires constant flipping of pages back and forth because nothing is repeated. By the time I was finished, the pages were falling out. This book could be four times as large, and if it were in a larger format, it would benefit from extensive footnotes and cross references. Although it would be bulkier and a more reptitive, it would be possible to read it in a linear fashion.

Great book for beginners
Id say this is a great text for the biologist learning mathematical population biology for the first time. It is also a great text for an early math major (freshman, sophomore, or junior undergrad) to get started with mathematical ecology. The book is very readable, and only some familiarity with calculus is required (basically if you know what a derivative is, you are set to go). In addition I really appreciated the lean supplementary reading list at the end of each chapter. It highlights famous papers and books related to the lesson. Each of these papers are classics and all worth the read. Some books sight way to many papers at the end and you end up not knowing which ones are worth your while.

That being said, its probably not challenging enough for a graduate or advanced undergraduate student with a strong mathematical background. For this audience I would recommend Mark Kot's "Elements of Mathematical Ecology". For those who have done some modeling in Ecology, May's book may be more advanced from an ecological standpoint (rather than a mathematical one).

Basically this book hooked me into mathematical ecology. I stumbled upon it at the UC Davis library while looking for some applied math books. After reading the first few chapters, it inspired me not only to take Alan Hastings's class, but also apply to a math bio undergraduate research program. Now I am in a graduate program in Applied math, and while the book may appear too simple for me to continually use it, I keep on coming back to it, mainly for its excellent reading list, but also for when ever I get lost in a more advanced text or paper.

a gentle but thorough introduction to a fascinating field
The field of mathematical biology has a long and storied history of examining relationships between species and scales since before Fisher's 1930 monograph "The Genetical Theory of Natural Selection."Although the excellent text by Edelstein-Keshet is still widely used, on the recommendation of a colleague I recently picked up a copy of the new (1997) text authored by Alan Hastings, out of UC Davis.A 220 page book published by Springer, its title is Population Biology: Concepts and Models.Available in paperback, the volume is divided into Single Species (with sections on density-independent and density-dependent population growth, population genetics, evolution of life histories) and Interacting Species (with sections on interactions, competition, predator-prey, host-parasitoid relationships and diseases).While detailing these concepts, the author includes bite-size reviews of matrix algebra, differential equations, stability computations, phase plane analysis and other topical quantitative techniques.I found the book eminently readable, which says a lot coming from someone who staggered through 18 semester hours of calculus and "Diff EQ" over 20 years ago.This book will be of great help to "ecologists ...
