Product Description
The myths of settlement of the Great Plains usually conjure up images of Anglo-American pioneers moving into a sea of grass, opposed by Native peoples. Such myths leave out the considerable influence of Spain. Spain and the Plains corrects this error, revealing the Plains as a northern frontier of New Spain, a frontier antedating the northern European presence in North America, and a frontier where Spanish and Native peoples met, clashed, and blended.

Spain and the Plains introduces and documents Spanish exploration of and migration to the Plains, examines the myths that shaped Spanish exploration and the pragmatic realities of exploration and settlement, and documents racism and misrepresentation that Hispanic groups encountered in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Contributors show how early explorers, shaped by the intellectual context of the Renaissance, sought mythical locales: the fountain of youth, the straits of Anian, and the city of Quivira. They describe how exploration shifted to emphasize military and economic gains in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Essays portray the diaspora of Spanish settlers and reconstruct daily life in their settlements on the Plains.

This unique collection paints a clear picture of a crucial but often misrepresented and neglected era in American and Spanish history.

Excerpt: The Iberian Peninsula is located in the extreme southwest of Europe and includes modern-day states Portugal, Spain, Andorra, the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar and a very small area of France. It is the westernmost of the three major southern European peninsulasthe Iberian, Italian, and Balkan peninsulas. It is bordered on the southeast and east by the Mediterranean Sea, and on the north, west and southwest by the Atlantic Ocean. The Pyrenees form the northeast edge of the peninsula, separating it from the rest of Europe. In the south, it approaches the northern coast of Africa. It is the second-largest peninsula in Europe, with an area of 582,860 square kilometres (225,040 sq mi). The English word Iberia was adapted from the use of the Ancient Greek word (Ibría) by the Greek geographers under the Roman Empire to refer to what is known today in English as the Iberian Peninsula. The name was not then used to mean a single political country or a population speaking a single language. Strabo's Iberia was delineated from Keltik by the Pyrenees and included the entire land mass south (he mistakenly said west) of there. The Ancient Greeks discovered Iberia by voyaging westward. Hecataeus of Miletus was the first known to use the term around 500 BC. Herodotus of Halicarnassus says of the Phocaeans that "it was they who made the Greeks acquainted with ... Iberia." According to Strabo prior historians used Iberia to mean the country "this side of the (Ibros)" as far north as the Rhone river in France but currently they set the Pyrenees as the limit. Polybius respects that limit but identifies Iberia as the Mediterranean side as far south as Gibraltar, with the Atlantic side having no n...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=14883 ... Read more

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Fátima is a town in Portugal famous for the religious visions that reportedly took place there in 1917. The town itself has a population of 7,756 and is located in the municipality of Ourém, in the Centro Region and sub region of Médio Tejo. It is in the district of Santarém and is included in the urban agglomeration of Leiria, in central Portugal, 187 km (116 mi) south of Porto and 123 km (76 mi) north of Lisbon. The name of the town (formerly a small village) comes from the Arabic name Fatima. Fátima is famous for the shrine called the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, built to commemorate the events of 1917 when three peasant children claimed to have seen the "Virgin of the Rosary", Our Lady of Fátima. When the children asked for her name, she said "I am The Lady of The Rosary". The children experienced the purported Marian apparitions in a pasture called the Cova da Iria. ... Read more

Product Description
For many, the image of Spain is the Costa del Sol with its huge hotels, crowded beaches, "English food served" signs, evening entertainments of "typical" flamenco shows, sangria and tasteless paella. Most visitors know little more of Spain than this, but beyond the Meditteranean coast there is a very different country - a country with a variety of scenery ranging from mountains and lakes to semi-desert, a country with a rich and complex history and culture which have left their monuments, a country which is also perhaps the most dynamic in Western Europe. "Coping with Spain" is designed for those who want to venture beyond the coast and into a land which is a blend of the traditional and the ultra-modern. The delight of travelling around Spain is that there are still relatively few who do so and in a day one can travel from the high-tech life of a modern city to regions so distant from the mainstream of modern life that the visitor genuinely has the experience of exploring."Coping with Spain" aims to give a general orientation to the country, travel, accommodation, cuisine, wines, traditional festivities, the natural world, how to make the most of even brief contacts with Spaniards and how to solve practical problems while there. ...
