Attentional processes, engaged during an event's unfolding, are essential for allowing us to transform an experience into a memory, and emotion can critically modulate those attentional processes, increasing the likelihood that an emotional experience becomes part of our memory stores. This book reviews behavioral and neuroimaging evidence that has revealed effects of emotion on memory and attention in individuals with and without post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), with particular emphasis on how emotion influences the attentional processes that allow individuals to transform experiences into a memory, the differences in the way emotional items are remembered and current controversies regarding the uniqueness of traumatic memories in PTSD. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best healing book I have ever read
I am Terri, William Pritchard's widow, This was his sight that we both bought from. I have been severely depressed since his death and I have been searching for three years to get some real help. This book has helped me to begin to heal. There were many, many other benefits that I thought had been addressedpreviously. This is truly a book for everyone
Invisible Heroes was recommended to me by a young woman who does body work. Iam 57 years old and have been reading self help books for a long long time. I knew this woman had great insight, but I was blown away by BellaruthNaparstak'sbook. I think this is truly one of the most informative, compassionate, well written books I have ever read. I read the book quicklybecause it was so fascinating and real. I feel like I was given a special key to help me heal. I have bought another copy to share with so many who would enrich their lives significantly.I would nominate this woman for President and our country would change for the better. People think that only war vets and firemen and policemen and ER docsand nurses have PTSD.I have recommended this book to most everyone I know. It has unlocked a tremendous healing in me. I wish I could give it to the world. Her Cd of PTSD is essential after reading this book. the answers are here. God Bless Bellaruth. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Trends in the Know-how of stress-related disorders.
This book is part of a series of personality-guided psychotherapy manuals having an editor such as Theodore Millon. Millon has received the 2003 Award for Distinguished Professional Contribution to Applied Research from the American Psychological Association. This information may appear tangential. However, those who are familiar with the extensive and prolific research of Millon are aware that much of the intelligentsia produced in the domain of Personality Disorders has been most enlightening, and often therapeutically helpful, although some clinicians may disagree with his viewpoints, conceptualizations, and treatment procedures.

The book's authors have cogently and proactively adopted Millon's personality-guided approach, and have treated us with a sublime work on stress-related conditions and disorders, PTSD, and interactions between stress and traumas. This is a very hot topic since APA has recently published new guidelines on the best treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder. There are people and patients who have a very pessimistic view of the nowadays' world, which they describe as unsafe, and dangerous.History teaches us that it has always been like this, and often times (unfortunately) even worse. As clinicians we cannot do much to change the events. However, what we can do is to help our patients to better deal with them. In light of the above, this book is an excellent tool because it offers a broad view of the topic, starting with an accurate conceptualization and ending with a choice of treatment plans and actions.

The book is very well-written, very informative, and sometimes fascinating because of its broad views, and the links to Hellenic and Hellenistic classical, philosophic, and epic accounts.
The senior author, Dr. George Everly, Jr. is a leading expert in stress-related disorders. His wealth of research is astonishing. Thus, as critic as you might be, you will have a hard time trying to find something which is not covered in this work at the time of publication (2002). In fact, the theoretical overview is so broad and tantalizing that you will be surprised how much there is we still didn't know.

I did learn much from this book in the past. It is my wish that other clinicians (and non) will profit from it as well.

Product Description
Trauma and disaster throw lives into chaos and fill people with the fear of loss, injury, and death. Although most individuals experience only transitory posttraumatic symptoms, others experience the effects of the disaster long after the traumatic event when new experiences remind them of the past.Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: Acute and Long-Term Responses to Trauma and Disaster provides clinicians, researchers, and policy makers with an examination of current advances in research and treatment by recognized experts at the cutting edge of innovation. This timely book incorporates DSM-IV criteria and the new diagnostic category acute stress disorder, which emphasizes the breadth of posttraumatic stress symptoms and disorders and the importance of distinguishing between acute and long-term responses to traumatic events. Individual chapters go beyond PTSD to examine other posttraumatic disorders and responses, the mechanisms of transmission of posttraumatic stress, and its effects on behavior and health in natural and societal disasters and traumas, including war. This volume pays particular attention to the array of psychiatric responses to trauma, including PTSD and the unfolding of illness and recovery over time. Posttraumatic responses are considered across individual, group, family, and community perspectives and from the vantage point of developmental systems from childhood to older adult life. ... Product Description
Discover the answer to the mysteries of these debilitating illnesses

Explaining “Unexplained Illnesses” provides long-sought explanations for the properties of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS), fibromyalgia, and posttraumatic stress disorder. This groundbreaking book examines common symptoms and signs; short-term stressors such as infection, chemical exposure, physical trauma, and severe psychological stress; why people are often diagnosed as having more than one of these illnesses, and approaches for treating the cause of each disease, rather than the symptoms. The book presents a detailed and well-supported mechanism (the NO/ONOO- cycle) that provides consistent explanations for many of the puzzling elements of these diseases.

At least a dozen scientists have proposed that chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple chemical sensitivity, and fibromyalgia must share a common mechanism; others have suggested posttraumatic stress disorder may belong to this group as well. This unique book provides explanations for their previously unexplained properties with more than 1,500 references to scientific literature, creating a whole new approach to therapy and treatment of these illnesses.

Explaining "Unexplained Illnesses" provides answers to these questions:

  • how do short-term stressors initiate chronic illness?
  • how does the biochemistry of the NO/ONOO- cycle produce chronic illness?
  • how can the diverse symptoms and signs of these illnesses be generated as a consequence of their common biochemistry?
  • why is there so much variation in symptoms from one sufferer to another?
  • what are the principles underlying the NO/ONOO- cycle mechanism?
  • how does the NO/ONOO- cycle provide explanations for a dozen previously unexplained properties of these illnesses?
  • how might 14 additional illnesses/diseases also be caused by the NO/ONOO- cycle etiology?
  • and many more
Explaining “Unexplained Illnesses” is a must-read for physicians and scientists, and for anyone who suffers from-or knows someone who suffers from—these previously puzzling illnesses.

5-0 out of 5 stars A new paradigm for chronic illness
Explaining Unexplained Illnesses
Disease Paradigm for:Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, Fibromyalgia, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Gulf War Syndrome, and Others
By Martin Pall, PhD (Informa Health Care 2009)

By Jackie Steincamp, New Zealand

Dr Pall opens our eyes to the altered biochemistry in chronic disease.A marvellous argument - but awarning, this book is not for the fainthearted, woolly-headed or medically and scientifically ignorant!
Hel presents the NO/ONOO (pronounced, aptly, "No, oh no!) cycle as the causal mechanism for CFS, FM, MCS, PTSD and related illnesses.Nitric oxide (NO) itself has many useful functions in the body, but if its levels are too high, its oxidant by-product, peroxynitrite (ONOO) propagates itself and creates a chronic vicious cycle. He argues that therapies should focus on down-regulating the NO/ONOO cycle and presents many modalities collected from various researchers and clinicians. He quotes extensively from such CFS medical heroes as Drs Paul Cheney, David Bell, Jacob Teitelbaum, Grace Ziem, and Garth Nicolson.
Dr Pall has written and researched M.E./CFS illnesses for many years. He is Professor of Biochemistry and Basic Medical Sciences at Washington State University. His long term interests in the body's regulatory systems and free radicals. Among his many distinguished activities, he is on the editorial board of the Journal of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (Haworth).
He shows that NO/ONOO damage can be quite local within the body, impacting on one tissue, but not necessarily another.Different people suffering from these illnesses thus can have an infinite variety of symptoms and signs produced by this variation in tissue distribution.Increased inflammatory processes are also engendered by high levels of peroxynitrite and may be quite localized.
He draws from world wide research to argue that whatever type of "unexplained illness" is concerned, that genetic susceptibility leading to hormonal abnormalities arekey factors."No! Oh no!" is not the basic problem. The individual's genetics and hormonal balance are the determining factors.
Lengthy explanations of why agents such as glutathione, selenium, flavonoids, magnesium, carnosine and carnitine (and many others) show why they help down-regulate the ONOO cycle.Summaries oftreatment protocols (all heavily anti-oxidant) from four leading M.E./CFS specialists illustrate how they may be used in treatment. .
Dr Pall provides a remarkable argument on what is surely a central thesis of chronic unexplained and fatiguing illnesses:namely that oxidative stress mechanisms point the way to any therapeutic approach. There is a wealth of information in this book, much of it quite technical, but understandable for any informed and determined reader.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good in parts but misleading about ME and 'CFS'
It is important to note that Pall should not be considered a M.E. expert and that when he refers to `CFS' this information should not be assumed to apply in whole or in part to M.E.

Some of what he is saying generally may possibly be relevant to M.E. patients to some extent (as regards treatment, rather than symptomatology or aetiology, as it does with multiple sclerosis for example), but this is as yet unclear due to the fact he unfortunately makes no distinction between fatigue and `CFS' and the distinct neurological disease M.E.

M.E. is NOT at all a medically unexplained illness, and has little in common with the conditions Pall claims `share many symptoms and often occur together' such as PTSD and MCS and Fibromyalgia - unlike `CFS.' As Pall claims, `CFS' (or rather, those illnesses which are misdiagnosed as `CFS') can be caused by many different things including bacterial infections, psychological stress and physical trauma but this makes it very clear that when Pall refers to `CFS' he is not referring to genuine M.E.

Anyone who describes an illness that is based on fatigue, is medically unexplained, has symptoms similar to Fibromyalgia or PTSD etc., and that can be caused by many different things such as trauma, physical and emotional stress and bacterial infection and common virus infections such as EBV or herpes etc., IS NOT REFERRING TO M.E. and is not knowledgeable about even the most basic facts of M.E.

The research is very clear that M.E. is not (and cannot) be caused by stress, trauma or bacterial infections and so on. M.E. is caused by a virus, an enterovirus and is primarily a testable and measurable neurological disease with many distinct features and unique symptoms.

Please, if you have a 'CFS' (mis)diagnosis, do everything you can to find your correct diagnosis, do not accept 'CFS' ever as an end point to the process of diagnosis. This theory may have some merit as regards M.E., some of it fits, but this information is inaccurate with many basic facts about M.E. so please go elsewhere for that info!

Jodi Bassett, HFME

5-0 out of 5 stars An in depth explanation
In this book you will find an in depth etiology of 4 little known diseases (MCS, CFS, PTSD and FM). Their causes, mechanism and how to fight them efficiently.
As well as some thought about collaterals, such as the difficulty to diagnose, the ignorance and skepticism of most people including, sadly, medical profession. And some number on how wide spread (and ignored) they are.
There is a wealth of reference at the end of the book (about 120 pages of them!)

Also you'll find also conjectures on numerous other disease, such as Asthma, Allergy, Lupus.

It was a great read. Although, not being a MD or biologist myself, some passage were a bit difficult and I just browsed over them.

5-0 out of 5 stars beacon of hope
Dr. Pall's book explains what I want ever doctor and family member or friend to finally understand. MCS is a real, and tragic, illness that results from the casual attitude we have with chemicals in our environment and this is what is happening. The book is an excellent text for the average person, and those with a non-scientific mind, as Dr. Pall teaches a basic science class on the NO/ONOO process responsible for the illnesses which many of us have had to live with for years. As I read the book I felt hope for all who suffer from one of these. More important still is the treatment formula that Dr. Pall, Dr. Grace Ziem and Jim Seymour have introduced. This treatment has changed my life. I highly recommend this book; buy several and gift them to every doctor you know...It's that important.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book all doctors should read and all with chemical injury
I read this book which I now plan to give to my Dr. so he can read it also.I suffer from this illness and really appreciate this book altho some of it was above my head.I learned lots from what I was able to read and understand.I recommend it for all who are suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and chemical injury and also for ALL doctors. ... Product Description
From the author of The Veteran’s Survival Guide, The Veteran’s PTSD Handbook addresses the obstacles that veterans face when filing for benefits related to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). One of the greatest obstacles, John Roche writes, is establishing a connection between a veteran’s service and PTSD.Because both combat stressors and noncombat stressors can cause PTSD and because of the difficulties in diagnosing the condition, filing a successful claim for benefits based on PTSD is difficult.

In the same accessible, self-help style used in The Veteran’s Survival Guide, Roche offers detailed instructions on how to prepare a well-grounded claim for veterans’ benefits relating to PTSD.He also discusses the four years he spent helping one veteran establish a "service connection" for his PTSD claim with Veterans Affairs. This book will be required reading for any veteran or veteran’s dependent who wishes to obtain his or her well-earned benefits and for those officials of veterans’ service organizations who assist veterans with their claims. ... Product Description
Nightmares, flashbacks, anger, concentration problems, emotional detachment, avoidance of people and places... These are some of the signs of PTSD. As many as one in three cops may suffer from PTSD, a condition that could lead to depression, suicidal thoughts, addictions, eating disorders as well as job and family conflict. CopShock prepares police officers for the aftermath of horrific trauma, helps families understand PTSD's effect on their loved ones, tells true stories of officers-men and women-with PTSD, and offers over 200 support sources.
In the second edition of this much praised book on police trauma survival, almost 50 percent of CopShock has been expanded, revised and updated with new material, including self-tests for PTSD, Anxiety, Stress, Panic Disorder, Depression, and Resiliency, as well as information on treatment centers.
The new chapters in the second edition include stories about police officers and firefighters on 9/11 trying to save survivors from the rubble of the World Trade Center; and stories about police dispatchers and police wives who suffer from vicarious trauma, but are often ignored because they did not witness the critical incident firsthand. In another new chapter, the second edition describes how police officers can develop resiliency to horrific events to help prevent PTSD. Stories from the first edition of CopShock are also included, as they have become sacred to many readers. These are stories about police officers trying to cope with PTSD as a result of brutal assaults, shootings, death investigations, previous careers as combat soldiers, terrorism, and even PTSD as a result of not shooting.
Law enforcement officers throughout the United States, Canada, and 8 other countries have used this book in their peer support programs, police academies, and post-trauma units. Psychologists, psychiatrists, first responders, police and support organizations recommend the book to their patients and members.
Since the publication of CopShock's first edition in 1999, the book has been reviewed and praised around the world. The A&E Television Network produced a documentary based on CopShock that is shown today in police academies and peer support groups.
In this new second edition, and in the aftermath of 9/11, the war on terror, and the consequences from natural disasters like hurricane Katrina, CopShock will help many more police officers, firefighters, first responders, and war veterans cope with the damaging effects of PTSD. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource for those suffering PTSD
As a Psychiatric Advance Practice Nurse, and author of a book on repressed memories as a result of sexual abuse, I work with PTSD victims and fully understand its implications. I have seen patients ravaged by the onslaught of flashbacks and nightmares. I've witnessed the life altering effects of exposure to horrific incidents. Unresolved cumulative trauma can lead to hopelessness, helplessness, depression and deep emotional pain. Many victims turn to alcohol, drugs and risky behavior to mask the lingering grief and despair.

I highly recommend this well-written, powerful book. CopShock is a must-read for mental health professionals, health care workers, police officers, fire fighters, emergency workers, and their families and friends. Allen Kates compelling, real-life stories, bring alive the accumulative effect of trauma that police officers encounter on the job, and the chaos and devastation it brings to many lives.

CopShock should be included in the training curriculum of law enforcement officers, fire-fighters, and emergency workers to arm them with the skills to ward off the downhill spiral from on-the-job stress, and to help the psychologically wounded recover. It also includes a comprehensive list of references for additional support.

5-0 out of 5 stars Crucial reading for anyone affected by trauma or PTSD
Allen Kate's book "Copshock" affected me on a visceral level unlike any book I have read. What an eye opener to the trauma of being a police person on the street, one of our returning wounded warriers, or part of their circle of loved ones. His expertise in the field of PTSD and trauma is exhaustive and comes at a time when we desperately need to address this aspect of our tumultuouss times.

5-0 out of 5 stars The definative source on police PTSD
This really is the definitive guide to police related PTSD at this time.
I was astonished at how well the book was able to pinpoint problems that I easily related to. I finally felt that someone understood my problems! That revalation cannot be understated. I also easily recognized how police work has affected so many of my friends and family. It was difficult reading in the sense that it woke me up in many ways to the depth of my problem. I had to read it in segments because my mind was racing over details that I had stuffed away for many years. It was difficult, but the payoff was enormous. You have to accept problems before you can heal them.
The Support Sources Index at the end of the book is a gold mine of information for professionals as well as for cops trying to find help.
I only wish CopShock had been available to me 28 years ago.
The highest five rating to the book and to the author.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must Read/Must Have for Fire Fighters" not just "Cops"
CopShock is not just for Law Enforcement Officers, but for all members of the Emergency Services including Fire Fighters and Emergency Medical personal. It goes beyond what you see on the news into the trauma that takes place every day on America's front lines. If you want to know what happens to our emergency services people, then have a read.It will keep you, from front to back, on the edge of your chair.

Author Allen R. Kates has done an exceptional job educating all of those who serve by shaping and defining the stories of those officers and firefighters wounded psychologically in the line of duty.

The story telling is in the words of the wounded warriors and includes an extensive network of references. The 6 self tests on conditions like depression, PTSD and panic are a "must" for those in service who are daily assaulted by traumatic stress exposure and traumatic stress wounding.

If you want to find a gift for someone you know who serves, then this book gets you pumped up about unlocking the mystery of PTSD and the effect it has on your inner workings.

For firefighters, the story of "Jimmy Brown" and his journey into and out of depression after 9/11 as a serving F.D.N.Y. Fire Fighter shows that you can find help.

The "backdraft" of feelings that goes with being a front line firefighter in the H.O.T. (Hazardous Overload of Thoughts) zone of thework you face daily can be overwhelming and confusing. When you open up the inch and a half between your head and your heart and do up your "Bunker Coat" you will find yourself reading "CopShock, Second Edition" more than one time and not be disappointed.

"CopShock, Second Edition" is written in common sense language.Kates has changed the direction of the American Fire Service by his clear writing and delivery on a subject he has researched for years for all "First Responders".

Get Connected, Stay Connected, Get the book.We at North American Fire Fighter Veterans Network (www.firefighterveteran.com) strongly recommend this book for all wounded warriors and those who want to know how to prevent PTSD before it begins.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic on Law Enforcement PTSD
Allen Kates' second edition of CopShock brings it all together and is, without a doubt, one of the most valuable books available for police officers, families, suicide prevention personnel and veterans on the topic of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). I encourage you to read it in its entirety, not just the new chapters--it's a treasure trove of information well worth re-reading.

For those who did not read the first edition, Kates is concise and to the point as he discusses what PTSD is and how it occurs from internalized reactions of horror to a critical incident or from an accumulation of events. The confusion into which officers are thrown in many situations is well laid out (the officer who "doesn't shoot" experiencing trauma like the officer who does, for example).

"What to Do About CopShock" remains a tremendously valuable chapter. Kates encourages officers to set up a support system before a critical incident occurs, which includes friends and family, peer counselors and therapists and support groups. "Preparing for the inevitable," says Kates, "puts officers in control during a period when control is sometimes taken away." This is life-saving advice. Along with sound observations and advice, he offers several excellent self-tests and evaluations and an extensive list of resources available to officers. Additionally, he points out that the exploring of early life events, prior to employment, can further aid them in coping with future incidents.

One important addition is a chapter on officers dealing with their 9/11 experiences, particularly cases in which the symptoms did not display for years after. This is an important chapter not only because it describes the struggles faced by officers, anywhere, who may be faced with a delayed onset, but it describes the role played by POPPA, an organization for NYPD officers that continues to offer not only peer support but a broad range of services, volunteers and referrals. This nonprofit organization is a classic example for everyone of how much can still be done across the country in broadening mental health care and support for emergency workers.Their new approaches illustrate that it is NOT time to "close the patent office" on suicide prevention programs and that new ideas are vital. The chapter on "Resiliency" is also a new, thoughtful chapter that offers some well considered suggestions on developing what the author calls a "resilience" to future traumatic events. It's not, he notes, something you merely assume you have--he provides an excellent inventory for self evaluation and planning. The suggestions are excellent, such as broadening one's viewpoint, acceptance, considering support groups, and taking advantage of a mental health professional to develop a healthy strategy for moving ahead.

It was hard to improve on the original edition of CopShock, but Allen Kates has done it superbly.

Product Description
In the early 1990s, significant media attention was given to the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD) of Vietnam veterans, whose post-war ?nervous? problems (i.e., sleep disturb?ances, hypervigilance, paranoia, panic attacks explosive rages, and intrusive thoughts) were known to veterans of earlier campaigns as ?battle fatigue,? ?shell shock,? and ?war neurosis? (Kelly, 1985). As any number of mugging, rape, and accident victims have demonstrated, however, one need not have been a casualty of war to experience the problem. PTSD appears in children as well as adults (Eth & Pynoos, 1985) and has been attributed to abuse, abortions, burns, broken bones, surgery, rape, overwhelming loss, animal attacks, drug overdoses, and other conditions.Dr. Moore explains the theory of Traumatic Incident Reduction and how it can be applied to PTSD. ... Product Description
This powerful client workbook is written in an encouraging and easy-to-understand style specifically for women who have been sexually assaulted and have developed chronic symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).Clients learn how cognitive-behavioral therapy has helped other victims and how it can work for them. This book explains how to distinguish PTSD symptoms from other disorders and teaches powerful techniques for overcoming these symptoms.

In writing this book, the authors aim to address two goals. First, they want to present information about PTSD and related problems in language understandable to nonprofessionals. This information will include a review of the studies on posttrauma problems and on the effectiveness of different treatments. They also describe why some survivors develop PTSD and others do not.

The second goal of the book is to provide a detailed client workbook for the treatment of trauma-related problems, especially PTSD, to assist clients working with a therapist. The authors are aware of the fact that people have different problems and different needs. What works for one person may not work for another. Therefore, they describe several different treatment techniques. The book is organized around the different cognitive-behavioral techniques that have been studied and proven effective with women sufferers of PTSD following an assault.

Throughout the book, the authors focus mainly on women who have been sexually assaulted and as a result developed chronic symptoms of PTSD, which have disturbed their daily functioning and cause them emotional distress. Most of the examples they use to demonstrate the cognitive-behavioral techniques are drawn from their experience in treating rape survivors. However, the cognitive-behavioral procedures outlined here have been as successful in helping women who have been sexually abused in childhood and adult female survivors of nonsexual assaults, like aggravated assault and robbery.Other survivors of traumas such as natural disasters and car accidents were also helped by this cognitive-behavioral approach. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
My anticipation was high as much of the literature on PTSD in forensic context is very new.Chapters are written by individuals reputed to be knowledgable in each area.Editing left much redundancy, such that I skip1/4 of the book because I'd alread read it!It is also very elementary. If you have very little idea of what PTSD is, and have never been to court, this is for you.Others, keep looking. ... Read more
