Product Description
Drawing on past speculation and present knowledge, reproductive biologist David Bainbridge conducts us through the forty weeks of a human pregnancy, from conception to breastfeeding, explaining the complex biology behind human gestation in a clear and unassuming manner.

Making Babies sets the latest findings in pregnancy biology in a challenging evolutionary, historical, and sociological context, proving that when it comes to drama, pregnancy has it all: sibling rivalry, a battle of the sexes, and a crisis of gender identity. Along the way, Bainbridge revisits some of the key puzzles about pregnancy: What's sex got to do with it? How does the fetus hijack its mother's immune system? What is the point, if any, of morning sickness? Just how does a fertilized ovum develop into eight pounds or so of baby, with ten fingers and ten toes? Does the baby or the mother control the onset of labor, and why is it such an ordeal for them both?

Entertaining and informative, Making Babies shows how the study of human pregnancy can help us understand our genesis as individuals and our evolution as a species, and provide insight into who we are and why we behave as we do. (20010801)Amazon.com Review
While it's a safe bet that most readers know where babies come from, it's equally likely that they don't know the whole story. Reproductive biologist David Bainbridge fills them in with Making Babies, a witty and intriguing look at an experience so essential that we all go through it at least once. It would be all too easy for the author to get caught up in the intricacies of hormones and anatomy that have evolved from our egg-laying ancestors, but he softens the details with insights and examples from throughout the animal kingdom. Expectant parents might not like being compared to red deer at first, but most will warm to their shared experience. Examining big questions like "Why have sex?" and "How does the fetus change the mother?" is daunting, but Bainbridge guides the reader through the issues with confidence and humility. It's no substitute for a birds-and-bees chat, but Making Babies is perfect for those who want to deepen their understanding of what happens next. --Rob Lightner ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A new way to look at pregnancy
Most pregnancy books follow a certain theme, but this book takes a different point of view. There's a scientific approach as opposed to how the mother is feeling and what warm fuzzies are going on.I like to think of this as the pregnancy book for men.It talks from a strictly scientific and medical approach. It's incredibly interesting and easy to understand. The author does a great job of making the book feel more personal while giving so many medical scenarios.

This book is an alternative to all of the other pregnancy books.Incredibly informative and easy to read.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's all in the approach...
I was excited when I found "Making Babies: The Science of Pregnancy" and started to read it right away. It read like a biology textbook, which I expected, but I still felt like it was missing something. There was a definite absence of feeling, of understanding. Everything, from sex to conception to birth and beyond, are described in a cold, businesslike manner. Never mind that this is the biggest life-altering (and body-altering) event known to humankind. A good writer can provide facts and statistics and historical context without sounding like they're sharing observations about a new, confusing species. Then I looked at the author's name, and saw that the author was a man. Maybe that was it? Not sure, as most of the pregnancy books I've read have been authored by women. There are far better books that explain the whys and hows of pregnancy. Unless you were a biology major in college, skip this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding Pregnancy
I loved this book. It is not a guide about pregnancy in the "What to expect..." kind of way. It is instead a very detailed, fascinating narrative about the current state of knowledge on conception, fetal development and birth. This book satisfied my curiosity on the complex process that is procreation. I particularly liked the ease with which the narration flows. The language is simple and mostly non-technical, but it is also not "dumbed down", which is brilliant on the part of the author. As a scientist myself, I was delighted with the list of peer-reviewed journal references provided at the end. I will definitely consider gifting this book to all of my pregnant friends, although I would highly recommend it to non-pregnant ones as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Way Cool
This is awesome any mother father or pregnant person should see this if they want to learn more about the growth of babies in the womb. There are lots of pictures, and complex information in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A detailed, scientific look
This book's subtitle "The Science of Making Babies" is completely accurate. The author delves into more evolutionary biology than I want or need to know, but it all makes for fascinating, if somewhat slow and clinical, reading. There are a few pictures, but they generally do not add to the ooh and ahh factor of the miracle of pregnancy. For that, I'd recommend "A Child Is Born" by Lennart Nilsson. ... Product Description

The terms 'teen pregnancy' and 'teenage parenting' are rife with moral accusations and factual ambiguities. Arising from a conference at Ryerson Polytechnical University, these nine original essays delimit and clarify the multifarious facts that affect how Canadian society both responds to, and creates, the phenomenon of the teen parent. The contributors bring expertise from diverse disciplines - sociology, history, and philosophy - to address the pressing question: what should social policy be on the issues of teen pregnancy and parenting?

An analysis of data from Nova Scotia discusses the material consequences of adolescent parenting - more poverty, less income, and less home ownership - but also challenges certain assumptions about the extent of such consequences. A discussion of focus-group results reveals that consideration of the socioeconomic barriers facing young single mothers, when given the necessary attention, suggests an often ignored set of issues relevant to judgments about responsibility: the experience of personal growth, the struggle to solve their own problems, and the search for independence. Delving in the ethics of responsibility and untangling the meaning of the term 'social construction' sets the context for policy debates on sophisticated, non-reductive terrain.

The study's new findings, the interdisciplinary approach, and the Canadian focus makes this unique gathering of facts and ideas of central importance to students of sociology, health and women's studies, philosophy, urban youth culture, and public policy. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Works both ways
This is the first book that I read on NFP and it served to be the most informative and useful. Before reading the book I had only heard of the famous rhythm method. This book opened a door to many different signs that a women can use to tell when she is fertile.I have used these signs (along with prayer) to GET pregnant (so I don't understand the other reveiwer).

I would happily recommend this book to anyone wanting to conceive as well as those that want a safe way to prevent conception.

3-0 out of 5 stars From Someone practicing NFP
I have been using NFP for a year now and am always looking for information to make me more educated on the subject.I sought this book to round out my education. For my purposes, it does serve me but this is not a book to be used for beginners, wanting to learn how to do Natural Family Planning/Natural Birth Control. This book is definitely towards birth control--as the title states--so I would not recommend it for those trying to learn how to achieve pregancy necessarily.I also would not recommend this book for those going off of the pill--it gives only a paragraph of information about that. This book is very good at giving biology and can be helpful in giving slightly different wording for helping someone to learn the signs of fertility. The author basically uses the Thermal Method of NFP and uses the other portions of NFP--cervix, mucus-- as secondary signs. If for some reason you can't do your temperature or want to use the sympto method, this is not the book for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Signs of Fertitlity- Second Edition
A MUST FOR ALL WHO ARE INTERESTED IN OR WHO ARE PRESENTLY PRACTICING NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING! A tremendous amount of research went into this little book.Although it is directed toward those interested in birthcontrol, there's too much information here for those seeking to achievepregnancy to ignore. It explains more than one method of Natural FamilyPlanning and suggests using them together for a higher success rate inbirth control or in achieving pregnancy. The beginning of this book ishard because of the scientific wording. It teaches you exactly what ishappening with your body.If you can make it through the difficult butshort first chapters, the center of the book is an absolute GOLD MINE!Ihighly recommend it to all women whether you are looking to achievepregnancy, practice birth control, or are premonopausal. However, if youare just beginning to learn Natural Family Planning, this book will notstand alone.I strongly urge you to buy more than one book, no matter whatbook you buy.It is too important.Add this one to your list and youwon't be sorry. ... Product Description
Unwed teenage pregnancy is a national problem - and a puzzle for clinicians and social psychologists. For how are we to understand a pattern of behavior that is strongly motivated and yet likely to end in unfortunate outcomes? Moreover, why does the pattern of unwed teenage pregnancy repeat in successivegenerations in some families, despite education and previous experience, whereas in other families the pattern is broken?

Reporting on intensive social and psychological research in a rural African American community in Louisiana, Anne Dean offers a compelling view of this phenomenon that integrates historical and economic analysis with a sensitive psychological inquiry into the minds of mothers and daughters and the patterns of communication between them.

Teenage Pregnancy: The Interaction of Psyche and Culture transcends earlier investigations by going beyond conventional research strategies to test psychodynamic theories about the formation of internal worlds. Drawing on the work of Erik Erikson and Hans Loewald, Dean not only finds empirical justification for psychodynamic theories of psychic structure, but also extends the scope and methodology of attachment research in an exciting new direction. Specifically, her analysis reveals how different kinds of attachment relationships between mothers and daughters manifest themselves in adolescence as internal working models that become the templates for interpreting, and acting upon, contradictory economic, social, and familial expectations.

In demonstrating how social factors and cultural schemas interact with psychodynamic motives and structures, Teenage Pregnancy has widespread applicability to social science research in general. And it offers psychodynamically oriented clinicians working with adolescents the opportunity to become better acquainted with the ways in which mother-daughter relationships gain expression in the identity choices of teenage girls. ...
