Book is good.
When I was looking at the book in the website, I thought is might be interests to those who are interested in dinosaurs. I think that book is good.

Not the greatest book I've ever seen
Truthfully, I wasn't very impressed with this one. It tries to be a good book, really it does... it just isn't. There are some places where the text is obviously (at least to me) inaccurate, the size scales are frequently inaccurate, and I wasn't very impressed with the CG illustrations. Some of these appear to be actual three-dimensional models (like the marine reptile on the cover), while others appear to have been created at least partly through photo manipulation. Frankly, I could have done a better job than the artist(s) did in many cases; they pasted an ostrich's head and beak on Aepyornis, for instance. Which is not only sloppy, it's completely inaccurate as far as what the animal should look like. Was being able to put "high tech" computer art in the book really worth sacrificing accuracy?

All in all, I rate this book with a fairly nondescript "meh". I've seen worse, but it isn't that great, and I was sorry I'd paid $25 for it. If you really have to have it, buy it used, or better yet, see if you can find it at your local library.

Thoroughly enjoyed it!
I am a long-time fan of Dr. Shuker's work, primarily because of the extensive and often exhaustive research he goes into on every topic he covers.This book is no different. When I am researching (or simply reading for enjoyment), I am very difficult to please because far too often I have found a particular book does not have a full background, or some are just plain erroneous with their "facts".

This book is literally a comprehensive take on the subject (prehistoric animals being a personal favorite subject for me) of prehistoric animals on stamps and I now have a guide by which I can delve further into this topic.

Dr. Shuker is a man of many interests and has written several books on those interests. You will not be dissapointed by checking out ALL his works.

totally disappointing
I should have known better from the price.It is just a mere list of stamps with a few b/w pictures.Dr Shuker has traveled allover the world and still doesn`t know Mèxico is not in Central America.The "book" is just not good.Somewhere in the cover it states that it is the only one of it`s kind (lie), I rather recommend you buy Domfil`s catalogue of prehistoric animals and dinosaur stamps which has hundreds of colour pictures, the only thing with this is that it covers from the first stamp to 2002 so it is 6 years outdated.Dr Shuker is a total waste of money. ... Very interesting reading
Tracing the history of vertebrates, this interesting book provides good information about animals and how they evolved.The illustrations are also very good and interesting.I've read parts of this book to my little daughter and she loves looking at the pictures and imagining living back in time when these animals roamed the earth.

Young earth creationists might want to avoid this book like the plague.The timelines are very heretical and all those intermediate species show a solid pattern of evolution of life on this planet.

This informative and well-illustrated book would be a useful adition to any nature- or science-lover's personal library, or an interesting coffee table book

I've only seen and read the 1988 edition so I don't know how many changes have been made in the new edition, but I assume the format's still the same.Basically this is a very good non-technical introduction to prehistoric vertebrates (animals with backbones - fish, amphbians, reptiles, birds & mammals). Although there are some pages that provide the basic background - how fossils form, continental drift, etc - by the far the most interesting, and indeed the bulk, of the book is the coverage it gives to a large number of individual genera, each of which is illustrated by a color painting.It is the sheer number and diversity of creatures covered here, rather than simply a few dozen types of dinosaurs, that makes this book so interesting. I find the realism of the art work tends to vary - some drawings seem more realistic than others, but I suppose that's just personal taste.The art work is still of good quality thoughout though.The accompanying text is brief but clear and informative, and gives a basic introduction to that type of animal. The best thing about this book is that it's not just about dinosaurs (although these are covered in detail) but also deals with many other types of vertebrate creatures as well.My only real criticism is that despite the title - "animals" - no invertebrate animals were included, no trilobites, eurypterids, nautiloids etc.Still, you can only cover so much in the space available, and this book does a pretty good job. ... Great Book for Children to Learn to Draw
I work with a low functioning student.He loves dinosaurs, and has talent for drawing.He saw this book in the library, and could not put it down.I purchased a copy for him, and he is so happy.I think any child interested in drawing these animals will simply love this drawing book, there is no reason at all not to purchase it.

Good for Kids
It's really a great book for kids that are interested in Dinosaurs. But i wish it indicated if they were meat eating or plant eating. It also could have drawings of all dinosaurs rather than leaving some out.
