I Wish Every Teacher would Read this Book
I have read three or four of the books out nowadays about bullying and I liked this one the best.Instead of easy answers ("just tell your child these three things") it opts for a much more time-consuming but more rewarding approach that helps the children explore their own views on bullying in particular and issues of unfair treatment in general.Since the question of how one should think, feel, and behave when faced with unfair treatment is such an important issue for all children and adults, I wish every teacher of young children would read this book, and I wish I had had Ms. Katch for a teacher.

a great read, but it needed to go deeper
The subtitle of this book, "Lessons on teasing and bullying in a preschool classroom" led me to believe that it would be easy to cull those lessons, allowing me to immediately ease the teasing and bullying I see in my own preschool classroom. This is not a book with easy answers, and as I began to read, I don't believe it was intended to be such. It is a very enjoyable read, fast and easy, about the day to day interactions of the author's own classroom. She utilizes some wonderful methods of interacting with and empowering the children, and for this reason I could easily recommend this book be required reading in a college teacher prep course. But in an effort to go deeper into her understanding of bullying, she digresses from her class to interview her brother (a former teaser, now a social worker) and high school students on their experiences. Quite frankly, reading the high school dialogue became tedious (however brief it was) with all the "Like's" that could have just been assumed by the reader.

Oh Well
I ordered the paperback version of the second edition of this book from seller- or so it states in my online invoice... but what I got was the third edition, hardback.I needed the right edition for a class so I had to re-order it through someone else.I didn't return this book becuase it would cost almost as much to send it back as it did to buy...Oh well.

A Fabulous Book that You Will Use Over and Over!
As the Director and Head Teacher of a Jewish Early Learning Center,much of my curriculum is based on Maxine Segal's book "Jewish Everyday: The Complete Handbook For Early Childhood Teachers". Now she and Deborah L. Schein have provided another incredible resource for Jewish educators with "What's Jewish about Butterflies?". This phenomenal book provides 36 lesson plans on how to incorporate Judaic learning and values into everything from apples and cookies to rocket ships and teddy bears!This is done with the use of songs and poems, blessings, books, Hebrew vocuabulary,
projects, and more!Weaving knowledge about Israel throughout the lesson plans also plays a big part in this very special book. Every page is filled with developmentally appropriate activities that are easy to read, telling teachers everything they need to know to create meaningful experiences for young students. There are also resource lists complete with websites, music, and even a glossary explaining the Jewish concepts found within this book. I can say that this bookshould be on every Jewish educator's bookshelf, except that mine will never make it to the bookshelf! This book moves with me from my house, to my desk at school, to my classroom, and back home again! I am also using this book as a resource to communicate ideas to my parents so they can extend these experiences at home. Buy this book!
I am using this required text for a graduate level reading course. The guided lessons are very easy to understand and use as a guideline for lesson plans. The book also gives specific books to use for each lesson, which I found to be very helpful. Good, easy Biblically-based children's activities
I purchased this to use in our Sunday School.The average age in my class is 4 yrs old.The lessons are easy enough for the children to do and it's always nice to have new ideas.My only complaint is that the lessons seem too "fluffy" for my purposes.I think this book would better serve as activities to do at home with your kids, but they aren't real deep scripture teaching lessons.There are a few that I really liked, but overall, I found it wasn't in-depth enough.Perhaps I'm just expecting too much for the age group I'm teaching, but I've tried other books like the "Read with Me Bible" by Zonderkidz and it has real verses from the Bible in it with great pictures to keep their intests and written at an easy level to understand.I ask the kids questions about what we've learned and I just feel they get a better feel for what the Bible is trying to teach with the stories from the Zonderkidz book, but when I can I try to use the two books together--one for the story the other for the activity.But with that said, I must say the activities are simple, with very little preparation required and they are Bible based, so it might not be my number one choice, it is the one I go to when I'm in a hurry for a quick easy lesson. ... Good Service
Book was as described.Working on lessons for next year's students and found many ideas to use and adapt.If you are looking to introduce writing poetry with fun and structure for those students who need it, this book will provide you with ideas.

Thorough and practical, yet somewhat random
I teach 6th grade language arts, and this book is a great companion for any poetry unit.It includes many poetry elements, from onomatopoeias to alliteration, and many of the lessons bring some new ideas about how to best help students develop an appreciation of poetry.This can be a challenge, but this book does offer ways to help develop the student's ability to play with words while using their own creativity.My only complaint would be the layout and order of the lessons, because I feel that they are somewhat random.

Easy to use, high quality, well researched
Of the many poetry instruction books I have read, this one is the easiest to use.The poetry used is by well-known talented poets and of high quality.My class of children responded well and as predicted by theauthors.This is the only book I have found that discusses both formalverse and free verse in an enjoyable, nonbiased format.Its list ofreccommended reading is detailed without being overwhelming.I wish I hadthis book years ago! ... The Early Childhood Initiative (ECI) was an ambitious effort launched inPittsburgh in 1996 to provide high-quality early care and education servicesto at-risk children, on a countywide scale and under the direction of localneighborhood agencies.Its goal was to improve the preparation of thesechildren for kindergarten, promote their long-term educational attainment,and give them the early tools to help them become productive, successfulmembers of society.Initially funded by foundations and private donors, ECIplanned to become financially sustainable over the long term by persuadingthe state of Pennsylvania to commit to funding the program at the end of astartup period.Four years after its launch, ECI was far short of its enrollment targets,the cost per child was significantly higher than expected, and the effort tosecure a commitment of state funding had failed.
