4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Resource!!
Diane Connell's "Brain-Based Strategies To Reach Every Learner" is a great resource for teachers AND parents!
As a primary school teacher for 20 years, and now currently working as a consultant in schools with parents, students and teachers on how to switch students on to learn in a way that makes sense to them, I can highly recommend this book. Crammed full of really useful information - and presented in a style that makes sense - you don't have to be a teacher to understand the message that we all learn in different ways... and that learning can be fun!
For teachers there are so many great tips and ideas which can be easily implemented in the classroom and for parents who want to find out what makes their child 'tick', this book is a real revelation. A top read - well done Diane!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good resource for teachers
"Brain Based Strategies to Reach Every Learner" by Diane Connell, Ed.D. is a worthwhile resource for teachers who want an overview of the principles of some important psychological theories and how they apply to lesson plans in the classroom. For example, the book offers strategies for visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners and the importance of using lesson plans that reach each type of student.Other ideas include memory strategies.Often children may be asked to simply memorize information (e.g. the 50 states), but may have difficulty simply memorizing or may forget the information after a short time. The book offers some excellent ideas (based on memory research) to help a child to put information into long-term memory from working memory.Other topics include Gardner's nine factor theory of intelligence.Once again, it describes Gardner's theory (which is an excellent one by the way), and offers suggestions in the classroom to reach kids with various strengths (e.g. musical intelligence) which are not consistently measured in traditional school curriculums on a consistent basis. The book begins with basic brain anatomy and discussion of left and right brained learners. The reader will probably find some new ideas to apply to lesson plans and in using these ideas may be able to reach more nontraditional learners. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent teaching tools
The overheads that go along with this book are fantastic. The worksheets are a little young for my middle schoolers, but they are a helpful reinforcement.

4-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Paragraphs
This is an easy-to-use resource for teaching basic paragraph writing skills. Skills are taught step-by-step using graphic organizers and simple instructions. It covers topic sentences, developing a paragraph, transitions, expository paragraphs, narrative paragraphs, descriptive paragraphs, persuasive paragraphs, and editing. Including in the booklet are overheads that would be useful in a classroom setting. Visual learners will especially like this resource.

I only give it 4 stars because the price of $12.99 is a little expensive for homeschool parents since they would not use the overheads and much of this information is easily found elsewhere. For classroom teachers using overheads, the price is reasonable. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Building Fluency
The speed drills are quick, easy to manage in small groups and help students reach attainable goals.

2-0 out of 5 stars Marginal Usefulness
Although the information in this book is useful, it is not the activity book that the shopper might be expecting. The fluency passages are too few, and the lower-level passages are reapeated twice on the page. While this makes duplication easy, it sacrifices additional fluency passage inclusion. Although some of the speed drills and word activities are useful, this book is a little light on content.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for classroom teachers
This book offers many practical lessons to help students become more fluent readers.Great suggestions and charts for students to record their progress.Teacher friendly!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for new teachers
This book is wonderfully straightforward and immediately applicable in your classroom. It clearly explains the why and the how so you can target this area of reading instruction which is often neglected. It is a quick read and the suggestions are easy to implement without a large investment of time or money. The activities suggested are meaningful, not cutesy, and the assessment suggestions are authentic. Also, the book suggests ways to allow students to track their own progress. This would complement whatever reading program you use; whether basal, 4-blocks, or balanced literacy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Yet!
This is without question the best book to guide students' writing! The first lesson creates a clear example of how to set up an essay with main idea sentences, details and clear distinctions between paragraphs. It is such a good first lesson that I refer to it when teaching all subsequent lessons. The book is easy to follow and I have seen great results with my students. There are no more tears when it is writing time because they understand what to do as I a guide them carefully through each step using this book. You won't regret this purchase!

5-0 out of 5 stars 10 Easy Writing lessons
This book is wonderful.I have been looking for a book to help my 4th graders prepare for the Writing Assessment, and this is it.The kids love the lessons and everyone from my Sp.Ed students to my Gifted students have been making progress. My husband sometimes reads stories that my students write and he has seen an improvement. One of my parents said that her son's everyday writing is even getting better, and she knows we have been writing. We still have a lot more of the book to cover . I know their writing will get even better as we progress.

4-0 out of 5 stars Subbing Observation
I was in a classroom substituting, and saw some of the activities from this book being used. The kids
were motivated! I ordered the book for my own use! Some of the activities can be used as journal writing/time or fillers.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST writing book in 13 years!
In my 13 years of curriculum, I have not found a writing book better than this one for elementary school.Well worth every penny of the money spent.

The lesson plans are done for you, and they are step by step! There are modeled pieces of writing included and bulletin board display ideas. There are skills imbedded in the lesson.

There are also additional writing ideas which can convert the 10 weeks into 30 weeks of writing practice.

Great for new teachers!Great for those of us who are uncomfortable teaching writing, because we are unsure of our own writing quality.

I LOVE this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Results!!

Product Description
Are there differences in the development of children in different types of day care? Does it matter how old children are when they begin attending day care? How does the behaviour of carers affect the development of children in their care? How do children who have been in day care fare when they go on to school? These and many other questions relevant to child development are being asked now that more children spend some of their pre-school years in day care. This is a book about research relevant to the development of these children.

The way in which children are cared for changes over time and differs from country to country. The book discusses the variety of these arrangements and illustrates some of the differences in the typical daily experiences of young children in day care in Britain. Against this background the main part of the book is devoted to a review of the results of a large number of researchprojects in day care. The discussion of research is preceded by a short description of the normal course of child development

during the pre-school years.

Children and Day Care presents some challenging ideas for the future of services for young children and for the future relationship between research and people working in day care.

The authors have considerable experience of research in day care for young children and have taken part in a major longitudinal study of day care in Britain. This book will be relevant to all those who work with young children, or who are concerned in any way with providing the best possible services for them.
