Product Description
How we can teach children to fight the impulse to bully and give them the tools to resist bullying when it does occur

Jane Katch is a master teacher and wonderfully astute observer of the four- and five-year-olds in her preschool classroom. In her new book she investigates why so many young children, who are only newly aware of the existence of the group, immediately try to cement their place in it by keeping others out. As she takes us into the world of her classroom and shows us how her kids act and react, she comes to new understandings of why some kids bully and scapegoat, how other kids get through the experience, and how she as a teacher might intervene to help all children.

"If you want to understand the power dynamics of kids, if you want to know what teasing and bullying looks like in early elementary school, then you must read They Don't Like Me." —Michael Thompson, coauthor of Best Friends, Worst Enemies

"Jane Katch offers us a rare gift, the insider's view of her remarkable classroom as she and her children struggle to understand what is fair and just in the explosive arena of those who intimidate and those who feel intimidated . . . A vivid and honest narrative." —Vivian Gussin Paley, author of You Can't Say You Can't Play ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I Wish Every Teacher would Read this Book
I have read three or four of the books out nowadays about bullying and I liked this one the best.Instead of easy answers ("just tell your child these three things") it opts for a much more time-consuming but more rewarding approach that helps the children explore their own views on bullying in particular and issues of unfair treatment in general.Since the question of how one should think, feel, and behave when faced with unfair treatment is such an important issue for all children and adults, I wish every teacher of young children would read this book, and I wish I had had Ms. Katch for a teacher.

4-0 out of 5 stars a great read, but it needed to go deeper
The subtitle of this book, "Lessons on teasing and bullying in a preschool classroom" led me to believe that it would be easy to cull those lessons, allowing me to immediately ease the teasing and bullying I see in my own preschool classroom. This is not a book with easy answers, and as I began to read, I don't believe it was intended to be such. It is a very enjoyable read, fast and easy, about the day to day interactions of the author's own classroom. She utilizes some wonderful methods of interacting with and empowering the children, and for this reason I could easily recommend this book be required reading in a college teacher prep course. But in an effort to go deeper into her understanding of bullying, she digresses from her class to interview her brother (a former teaser, now a social worker) and high school students on their experiences. Quite frankly, reading the high school dialogue became tedious (however brief it was) with all the "Like's" that could have just been assumed by the reader.
Overall, I did devour this book and would recommend it to my fellow teachers, (...) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More information
I'm cheating a bit because this is my own book and I'm proud of it. (You may disregard my rating--winks). Not only does "ABC, Follow Me!" help children with the sounds of letters (phonemic awareness), but it also helps them recognize and differentiate letter symbols. The crafts are included not just for their fun value, but also because they help children get a kinetic feel for letter shapes--something that can be very useful for dyslexic learners. For example, one craft suggests that children cut out large letters and then place a sheet of paper over the cut-out and make a rubbing. Also included are playground activities using letter chants, dramatic play suggestions, ideas for related creative art projects, and bibliographies of additional useful resources.

5-0 out of 5 stars For all K & Grade 1 Teachers
Every kindergarten and first grade teacher needs this book! Fun rhymes teach and reinforce phonemic awareness. Crafts are age-appropriate and inexpensive, created with materials most teachers have on hand. Craft patterns are included, as well as photos of the finished product. The lessons offered are great ways to engage children in learning. ... Read more

Product Description
The Early Childhood Initiative (ECI) was an ambitious effort launched inPittsburgh in 1996 to provide high-quality early care and education servicesto at-risk children, on a countywide scale and under the direction of localneighborhood agencies. Its goal was to improve the preparation of thesechildren for kindergarten, promote their long-term educational attainment, and give them the early tools to help them become productive, successfulmembers of society.Initially funded by foundations and private donors, ECIplanned to become financially sustainable over the long term by persuadingthe state of Pennsylvania to commit to funding the program at the end of astartup period.Four years after its launch, ECI was far short of its enrollment targets, the cost per child was significantly higher than expected, and the effort tosecure a commitment of state funding had failed. ECI was therefore convertedto a small-scale demonstration program, leaving a residue of disappointmentin many communities around the county.Although findings from a parallelstudy suggest that participating children may have derived substantialbenefits from ECI, it failed to achieve its goals in terms of scale andsustainability. In the aftermath of ECI's scale-down, RAND was commissioned by the HeinzEndowments (ECI's largest funder) to study why ECI fell short of itsobjectives and to learn from its mistakes. The findings of the study arepresented in this report, which summarizes ECI's organizational history, analyzes and explains critical weaknesses that hindered ECI's ability tosucceed, and articulates lessons to inform the design and implementation offuture large-scale reform initiatives, whether in early care and educationor in other areas of social services. ... Product Description
Are there differences in the development of children in different types of day care? Does it matter how old children are when they begin attending day care? How does the behaviour of carers affect the development of children in their care? How do children who have been in day care fare when they go on to school? These and many other questions relevant to child development are being asked now that more children spend some of their pre-school years in day care. This is a book about research relevant to the development of these children.

The way in which children are cared for changes over time and differs from country to country. The book discusses the variety of these arrangements and illustrates some of the differences in the typical daily experiences of young children in day care in Britain. Against this background the main part of the book is devoted to a review of the results of a large number of researchprojects in day care. The discussion of research is preceded by a short description of the normal course of child development

during the pre-school years.

Children and Day Care presents some challenging ideas for the future of services for young children and for the future relationship between research and people working in day care.

The authors have considerable experience of research in day care for young children and have taken part in a major longitudinal study of day care in Britain. This book will be relevant to all those who work with young children, or who are concerned in any way with providing the best possible services for them.

My only complaint is that these books used to be spiral-bound which makes it easier to photocopy activities. They are not spiral-bound anymore, but either way great purchase for school social workers and counselors!

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and Useful Information for ECE Students
This book helped me so much when I took early childhood education classes at the community college. It was easy to read and understand as an overview of early childhood education and it followed a logical "Who, What, Where, When and Why" format in the early chapters. Then it actually gave simple and effective systems for doing individualized teaching and keeping track of it, which is a requirement in today's early childhood programs. In addition it gave an excellent appendix of what to expect developmentally from children birth to age eight, AND another appendix that provides a system of time blocks for doing lesson planning for 3-5 year olds that matches up with the child's continually changing and evolving development. This book was the most useful book for teaching young children that I have ever used, bar none, and I highly recommend it for communitiy colleges and also for teachers already in the field. It could be easily used for inservice training. It's my "handbook" for everything I need to do in curriculumn planning now that I teach in a preschool; I would never resell it.Chris Strader SC

4-0 out of 5 stars Just What ECE's Need
I used this book in an ECE Curriculum Development and Techniques course while earning my MA.I found the information relevant, specific and easy to read.It was not overwhelming with un-heard-of concepts and it was very current in the theories and ideas presented.I would recommend this book to teachers, daycare providers and homeschoolers who are looking to improve their knowledge of integrated curriculum, and those who develop their own curriculum as a guideline book to being successful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Early Childhood Curriculum Resource
This book is an excellent resource for preschool teachers who make curriculum decisions and develop activities in the best interest of their students!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Practically Written Book
I used this book in my early childhood curriculum class while earning my masters. After reading it, I realized how much curriculum knowledge I learned without getting the theory stuck in my way.

I love theoretically based information-injecting, but I relished this book due to my past familiarity with the early childhood fathers.I knew of Piaget, Vygotsky, Montessori, Kamii, Froebel, and the like. I needed some practical information, not those basics. This book hit the spot. Please try it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
The Book Creative Resources for the Early Childhood Classroom is not only geared for classroom teachers but moms who are enthusiastic about finding fun ways for their children. As a parent and teacher, this book is now one of the handiest books in my library as it makes my lessons and thematic planning so much easier. I am also able to help my son with activities based on themes being done or things that he finds curious. I can help create that learning experience for him.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for teachers
My current center has this book for staff to use in the library and I loved it so much I ordered one for myself. It has a wide range of early childhood themes and includes planning webs for some ideas of how you can extend the theme and ideas for planting the theme into centers. It has some cute art/small group activities and songs/finger plays, but some topics have more than others or they may not be appropriate for your group and you'll need to find more elsewhere. However, the book and multimedia lists have been excellent and overall it has proven to be an excellent investment.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great for Montessori Philosophy
