Product Description
This book will help practitioners to ensure that they are doing all they can to include children with special educational needs. The author looks at several conditions such as Asperger's Syndrome, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Down's Syndrome and ADD/ADHD and shows how play can be adapted to help alleviate the difficulties children with these additional needs might have. As more and more children with a higher level of special need come into mainstream schools, teachers, nursery nurses and teaching assistants have the responsibility of ensuring that they have access to all aspects of learning.

This book offers guidance on what play is, how to adapt activities to suit children with special needs, how play can help recognition of children's progress, the most common types of special need, how play can be used to help raise self-esteem, and resources for further help.

Written for those working in mainstream settings, the author shows how including children who have special needs in play can help to provide great opportunities for learning and for developing social and communication skills. ... Read more

Product Description
Recent legislation and cutbacks to central support services mean that the responsibility for meeting special educational needs is resting ever more squarely on the shoulders of ordinary classroom teachers. Yet few feel wholly confident in their ability to adapt work within the national curriculum to meet the whole range of needs, or coordinate successful individual education plans for children who, for whatever reason, are not learning as well as they might.

This book will increase that confidence. Aimed at busy class teachers, special needs coordinators, heads and teachers in training, it shows how the teacher can build differentiation into planning lessons and schemes of work. It describes workable strategies for managing the most common behavior difficulties and meeting special needs in language, literacy and mathematics.

At a whole school level, it offers practical guidance on reviewing special needs policies, assessment, record keeping, and the management of roles and resources. The focus is on the way in which schools can do a good job in meeting special needs themselves, within the everyday constraints of time, money and energy, and in so doing provide genuinely inclusive opportunities for all children.

This edition has been comprehensively updated and rewritten to cover the revised SEN Code of Practice and related legislation, new directions in inclusion and all the major curriculum initiatives now in place in primary schools. ... Read more

Product Description
This book takes the approach that children with disabilities are more like their peers without disabilities than they are different and that educators need to provide programming from that perspective. Both pre-service and in-service teachers are facing the reality that their classes will reflect increasingly more diverse children as time goes on. While child diversity in terms of race, culture, religion, experience, family and national origin is, and will always be a part of a class make-up, the practice of inclusion promises to add another level of complexity to teachers' decision making processes. This book is designed to provide readers with the skills and knowledge to make curriculum decisions in order to care for and foster the development of young children with special needs in normal early childhood settings. This book blends the best of early childhood and early childhood special education practices and helps the practitioner understand how to modify the classroom and the curriculum to make them accessible to all children. The focus is on developmentally appropriate practice as the basis for designing programs that enable children to become active participants in the learning process. Chapter One presents three case studies of real children with disabilities. Readers continually re-visit the children as they explore IEP's, IFSP's, formative and summative assessment, room arrangement, curriculum development, and behavior management.Pre-service and in-service early-childhood teachers. ... From the supplier: Encouragement from teachers using verbal and physical persuasion can motivate the preschool children with disabilities to imitate peers' behavior. The use of affectionate activities can promote the learning of social skills by children with behavior disorders. Peer-mediated interventions combined with teacher-mediated approaches encourage disabled children to acquire social skills. Correspondence training can be used for children having language skills but with problems in other developmental areas.
