Ms. Gardner has given basic sound advise for the planting of various types of fruits (including gooseberries and elderberries)along with many great recipes. For anyone wanting old fashioned goodness on hand, this is the book! Her recipes are simple and sound delicious. I have only one warning: her jams and jellies do not call for pectin but rather advise using a percentage of unripe fruit to help the product set. For those who have to buy fruit at the market, this may not always be possible. I would love to see a new edition of this book to address some modern changes but overall love the "old-fashionedness" of this little gem! ... Read more

While the chutneys and relishes may have intrest to those looking for new tastes, the information on supplies and how to process the finished product do leave something to be desired.The USDA does not approve of theprocessing procedures or reuse of jar lids as suggested in the book.And Ifound the quick pickle recipes lacking in enough vinegar to make them safe. If you have contact with your local extension office then by all meanscall them and work with them to make these preserves.With a littleadaptation and proper processing these can be made safely and withwonderful results. ... IF you grow your own fruits and veggies, this book is great. It has guides to tell you which veggies are better canned, dehydrated and frozen.That way you can plan your garden accordingly.How to make your own Pectin so you don't have to buy it.It even tells you how to make your own wine and beer!It also takes you step by step in salting/curing meats and fish.This book is great.

I haven't had a garden in years, but started one at my new home. I wanted a book that wasn't strictly canning or pickling but something that would help me diversify my pantry and make the most of what I'm growing and buying at farmers markets. This book totally fits the bill. Aesthetically it is modern and has wonderful images, but that wouldn't mean much if the book didn't do it's job. It really has. I'm drying tomatoes, making the grilled zucchini in olive oil and my pesto turned out delicious. Tomorrow I'm making the strawberry freezer jam too! The book has a very nice balance of basic recipes as well as some more adventurous chutneys and such. I'm getting a lot of use out of it and it is one of my favorite cooking / crafting books right now. I also recommend Ashley English's Canning Preserving.

Excellent book which covers more preserving techniques than I knew existed-from canning to freezing to smoking to clamping to dehydrating.
