Product Description
The 1767 decision to divide Prince Edward Island among elite British grantees shaped Island history for more than a century. "Lady Landlords of Prince Edward Island" examines this history through the lives of four women who, due to the vagaries of family formation and inheritance, became Island landlords. As absentee owners of large estates, each of the four women faced challenges from those who wanted land redistributed in freehold lots to actual settlers. Their individual management strategies were determined in part by class standing and marital status, as well as individual eccentricities and prejudices. Drawing on family and official papers, Rusty Bittermann and Margaret McCallum provide engaging portraits of these women - orphaned heiress, prudent wife and property manager, countess estranged from her husband, independent spinster - as they negotiated relations of power and privilege in a domain dominated by men."Lady Landlords of Prince Edward Island" is a compelling narrative that provides a unique perspective on landed society in England in the age of industrialization and reform, making an important contribution to trans-Atlantic, British social, legal, and women's histories. ... Product Description
Dr John Mackieson practised medicine in Prince Edward Island from 1821 to 1885. "Island Doctor" offers an intimate look at the work of this "ordinary" physician and a fascinating glimpse of medicine in the nineteenth century. Based on a study of two casebooks, which include Dr Mackieson records for 257 patients with a variety of illnesses seen from 1826 to 1858 and 115 patients with mental illness seen from 1868 to 1874, two manuscripts, and a diary, David Shephard illustrates the wide variety of representative cases in Dr Mackieson's career and situates his work in the context of medical practice at the time. The book will interest a variety of readers, including general historians, medical historians, social historians, historians with an interest in the Atlantic provinces, physicians, and academic libraries. ... Product Description
Working Together tells the story of the co-op movement in Prince Edward Island, from its beginnings in the 19th century to its prospects for the 21st. Based on exhaustive research and dozens of interviews, and written in a journalistic style, it shows how innovative Islanders have reshaped ideas and models developed elsewhere to fit their particular needs. Where no models existed, they created their own; their farmers' banks and fishermen's unions have, in turn, inspired co-operators in other places. ... Read more

Product Description

In contrast to most previous works on the subject, this is not a local or regional history, but a book in colonial and/or imperial history which focuses on Prince Edward Island. This broader perspective allows Bumsted to show, for example, that the decision to distribute land to proprietors was a comprehensible and even liberal move by British government in the context of the imperial expansion of the 1760s. Bumsted demonstrates that the external influence of the American Revolution is more important than had been thought, both in isolating the island from Britain and, through the handling of Loyalist immigrants, in exacerbating the conflicts over land ownership.Previously, Prince Edward Island's crucial formative period from 1763 to the end of the eighteenth century has not received sufficient attention, while the proprietorial system has received too much attention without sufficient critical analysis. Land, Settlement, and Politics on Eighteenth-Century Prince Edward isalnd redresses the balance.

Product Description
In The Home Place: Life in Rural Prince Edward Island in the 1920s and 30s, Jean Halliday MacKay paints a vivid picture of farm life between the wars and through the Great Depression. She begins with a brief look at the Halliday family’s arrival as Selkirk Settlers in the early 1800s in Belfast, Prince Edward Island. But most of her story takes place some seven generations later, when she and her brother and sister were growing up. Written especially for her family, The Home Place tells of life without electricity, running water, or telephones. It tells of the days when automobiles were put on blocks for the late fall, winter, and early spring because only horses could traverse the roads. It tells of the fun and trials of the one-room school, the experiences with farm animals, the excitement of Christmas and other special occasions, and the vital part the children played in achieving an orderly and pleasant house and a prosperous farm. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Just Wonderful!
This is a wonderful account of growing up in rural Canada during the early and mid-twentieth century."Wonder-full" can be taken literally here, as we marvel at the way MacKay's family and community lived and worked without the technology we so take for granted today - including electricity, telephones, cars, indoor plumbing, refrigeration, ready-made clothes, etc. As a piece of cultural history, it is an invaluable and unique first-person account of a particular place and time; at the same time, it portrays elements common to the lives of many rural families across North America not so long ago.

This is a well-written, gentle account by an educated woman - MacKay held a Ph.D. - which would be an appropriate, informative, and interesting read for both children and adults. Don't let the fact that I say "children" deter any adults from reading it; I didn't want to put it down, the pictures MacKay drew were so vivid. I felt like I was there, and "at home." ... Product Description

From the late eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth century, Prince Edward Island enjoyed one of the most robust shipbuilding industries in the world. This study details the way in which shipbuilding transformed the island’s economy by creating a wealthy merchant class, employing multitudes of tradespeople, and facilitating the distribution of timber and agricultural products. Data from the local shipping register gives an account of the industry’s production cycles and system of finance.
