"Lady Landlords of Prince Edward Island" examines this history through the lives of four women who, due to the vagaries of family formation and inheritance, became Island landlords. Just Wonderful!
This is a wonderful account of growing up in rural Canada during the early and mid-twentieth century."Wonder-full" can be taken literally here, as we marvel at the way MacKay's family and community lived and worked without the technology we so take for granted today - including electricity, telephones, cars, indoor plumbing, refrigeration, ready-made clothes, etc. As a piece of cultural history, it is an invaluable and unique first-person account of a particular place and time; at the same time, it portrays elements common to the lives of many rural families across North America not so long ago.

This is a well-written, gentle account by an educated woman - MacKay held a Ph.D. - which would be an appropriate, informative, and interesting read for both children and adults. Don't let the fact that I say "children" deter any adults from reading it; I didn't want to put it down, the pictures MacKay drew were so vivid. I felt like I was there, and "at home." ... Read more
