5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding descriptions of many techniques
This is a brief book, just 100 pages or so, and heavily illustrated. As a result, I'm puzzled about how this author managed to cram so much great informtation into it. It covers the basics of etching, engraving, soft-ground, sugar-lift, aquatint, mezzotint, drypoint, and a few other techniques, along with preparing the intaglio plate, trial proofs of various kinds, and seemingly endless tips for the artist working in a small, self-equipped studio.

Banister puts strong emphasis on home-made equipment. The most exotic tool he describes is a glass muller for mixing ink. Even then he notes how to put it together, using the kind of glass blank used for telescope mirrors. The book has a few formulas for etchants and grounds, but fewer than other books - the real strength here is in discussion of tools and technique, down to very practical details. Photos showing tools and techniques are quite helpful, but Banister complements them with written detail of fine points that would be hard to capture photographically.

This is a great resource for an admirer of prints (like me), who wants to know more about how prints and the marks in them are made. I imagine that it would be very helpful for beginning printers, too, especially those without access to a big studio or expert guidance.

This book reveals the secrets of hybrid and combination techniques. Combined techniques areoften used by printmakers as tricky ways of achieving particularresults, and then not fully acknowledged or detailed in the informationthat accompanies the print when it is exhibited. Combination printmaking has a long history, butthe explosion of media now available to printmakers has opened up manynew possibilities. Learning the techniques associated with creatinghybrid prints is, at the moment, a case oftrial-and-error for most printmakers, unless they are lucky enough tohave a tame and generous printmaking friend who will share theirsecrets; most printmakers closely guard the secrets of how they maketheir unique prints. This book will explain a lot of these 'secret' methods and techniques. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Essential Guide for Hybrid Prints
I found this to be the essential guide for hybrid printmaking. The book is written with a conversational tone, and is easy to understand and follow. The author covers all bases. Starting with a brief discussion of what is a hybrid print, she continues by sharing methods for combining a variety of printmaking techniques. She covers digital, stereoscopic and lenticular, collagraph, monoprint, lithography, intaglio, screen, and relief printing. There is even a section about 2D and 3D art constructions and handmade books. There are many photos and examples, and she provides explicit information about tools and supplies. Most of all, you really do learn about techniques that would otherwise take years of experimenting on your own. This book is an excellent resource for any printmaker, no matter your ability level. ... Read more

Product Description
A highly expressive and versatile art medium is thoroughly examined in the first book ever devoted to the revolutionary solarplate printmaking process. In its great flexibility, this process gives artists a safe way to create professional-quality prints that resemble etchings, woodcuts, lithographs, screenprints, or photos. Clear instructions, diagrams, and photos are provided. Images by famous contemporary artists show the diverse ways of working in this rewarding medium.Amazon.com Review
Printmaking in the Sun introduces a revolutionary new printmaking technique known as the solarplate method, first developed in 1972 by one of the book's authors, Dan Welden. He had begun experimenting with light-sensitive polymer plates in place of traditional metal plates, which frees the artist from exposure to poisonous lead fumes. To make a solarplate print, one creates a piece of artwork on film, overlays it on a solarplate, and exposes the film and plate together in the sun. The drawing is transferred to the plate, which is then developed in ordinary tap water. The resulting image appears in the same orientation as the original drawing. This book exhaustively covers the techniques of solarplate printing, describing how to use the proper equipment and materials, prepare relief and intaglio images, make and print relief and intaglio plates, expose your work to the sun, use digital images and photogravure, and work with color printing. The book is generously illustrated with color and black-and-white solarplate images by accomplished artists, as well as clear step-by-step illustrations depicting how to prepare and process your images and plates. The book also contains a comprehensive glossary, selected further reading, and list of suppliers in the United States and Australia. The innovative techniques described in Printmaking in the Sun form an enormous resource of versatile, imaginative applications. Artists of all levels will appreciate the fluidity of creative expression inherent in such a simple and immediate process. --Mary Ribesky ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent - possibly the best resource on solarplate printing
My over-riding impression after having just put this book down is "Why can't all How-to art books be of this quality?". Along with printing I also dabble with oils, watercolours, acrylics, pen and ink, and charcoal. As a self taught artist i find books to be a major source of my knowledge. With 250 art related books littering my shelves Welden's book is top of the pile. It is superbly written, passing on valuable knowledge of use to both the beginner and the more experienced printmaker. His co-author Pauline Muir is a trained scientist and maybe she's the reason for the straight-to-the-point approach as opposed to the fluff that litters so many other art books. Welden opens with an overview of the chemical mechanisms involved in the solarprint process. And then moves on to the details of what type of plate to buy, cutting, storing, exposure, materials etc. The relief and intaglio processes are covered next, in depth from creating the intial image through to printing the plates. Digital imaging, photogravure and various approaches for colour printing follow. Numerous tips are presented. An extensive list of eqpt suppliers is also provided. The book is well illustrated throughout and printed on good quality paper. Another excellent book from Watson & Guptill. Absolutely 100% recommended for anyone interested in the solarplate method.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very complete and easy to follow
Great book. He covers all the material in depth but manages to keep it easy to follow for the novice printmaker with clear, well illustrated, step by step instructions. The process of printmaking is much more enjoyable without having to deal with acids, fumes and the related health issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear instructions for a smart approach to printmaking
Welden created the solar plate technique, and it's clearly today's smart way to make fine art prints. No acid, no fumes, no health issues. Solar plates are developed in plain water, and produce top quality images. The authors' (Weldon's co-author is Aussie artist Pauline Muir) instructions are clear, direct, and succinct. A practical guide for both novices and seasoned printmakers. Welden is a top-notch artist and printmaker, and his is the only book yet available on this advanced printmaking methodology. ... Product Description
For many art lovers and collectors, the term "print" suggests a two-dimensional work on paper made by one of a dozen or so half-understood techniques-aquatints, etchings, lithographs, screenprints, etc. This book shows readers the effort and skill that these techniques entail, how they are used, and how the artists employ them to create specific effects.

This book is both a survey of the best contemporary prints by American artists and a guide to printmaking techniques and effects. Nearly one hundred prints are shown in full color. Works are grouped by technique, and each section begins with an explanation of the process or processes illustrated within the chapter.Print publisher, curator and former gallery owner Chris Byrne has specialized in contemporary fine art prints for the last fifteen years. Using examples from ten of North America's top print houses, Byrne describes both basic techniques and the joint experimentation of artist and master printer as they create new images for an expanding audience. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One Warhola of a book
The mass production of this text serves as an aesthetic nurturing for the starving art enthusiasts of our time. Clement Greenberg and Susan Sontag would vehemently disapprove.Byrne sheds light on the multi-valent reality of the collaborative process.Printmaking has never been so sexy. I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful Survey of Technique
Byrne provides a good introduction to the four major groups of printing techniques -- relief (woodblock, linocut, etc.), intaglio (etching, aquatint, engraving, and so on), lithography and screenprinting -- briefly describing their history, mechanics and characteristic effects. If you are interested in fine prints, this book will give you the vocabulary, although you really have to see some of the techniques in action to understand how they work.

Text is a small portion of the book, which is largely devoted to contemporary prints themselves, with commentary from some of the printers. The book is *not* a general survey of contemporary fine prints, however.Instead, the book seems to have been conceived as a collaboration between Guild.com (an Internet retailer of fine and decorative art) and several of the contemporary fine print publishers who make their work available through Guild (as well as through more traditional distribution channels).Printmakers who do not sell through Guild are not represented, and artists who work on their own (typically in woodblock or linocut, which do not require a press) are similarly excluded.Even so, many of the finest printmakers in the US are included, and the quality and variety of the work displayed is stunning. Color reproduction is quite good, although not perfect. ... Read more

Product Description
The work of J. J. Lankes (1884-1960) is regrettably almost forgotten today. This is unfortunate, for in addition to being a certifiable American original, Lankes was a talented artist (arguably the first genuine woodcut artist this country produced), the close friend of poets and writers, and the author of the first reliable and comprehensive book on woodcutting published in North America. This is the first and only volume devoted to his fascinating career, one that highlights and illustrates the variety and the quality of the work he created over forty years. Reading it will be a revelation.

Lankes worked exclusively in the East, and his woodcuts, mostly of scenery and structures, range from northern Vermont to his adopted state, Virginia, with brief excursions into New York and Pennsylvania. Commissioned on a regular basis to illustrate books, he created a number of enduring images, his most famous certainly being the ones used to adorn Robert Frost's poetry. These and the glorious woodcuts he published of Virginia were probably his crowning achievement, but this retrospective contains a complete overview of his work, including his Christmas cards, illustrations of weather sayings, Bucks County stone barns, and his inventive ephemera.

In The Woodcut Art of J. J. Lankes, Welford Dunaway Taylor has painted a rich portrait of a crotchety, unconventional and neglected American artist, and also provided an extensive bibliography of Lankes's published work as well as a collation of his prints. This book, if there is any justice, will restore Lankes s reputation as one of America's foremost graphic artists. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a beautiful reference book
I would ask that all aspiring lithographers consider getting both the old and the new Tamarind books. The original "The Tamarind Book of Lithography: Art & Technique" is far more comprehensive (maybe overly so) albeit some of the terms (and materials cited) are outdated. However, most of today's students/artists/printers are less inclined to spend time to leafing through the multitude of cross-references within the book to problem solve. The updated Tamarind book is far easier to use so in that regard Tamarind has responded to today's learning environment. Like lithography itself, there is no one answer. If I had to list my tried and true references for litho I would recommend the following in addition to the aformentioned two books.

-Tamarind's "Aluminum Plate Lithography: A Manual" available at Tamarind(excellent, fast, workshop reference)
-Tamarind's "Photolithography: A Manual" available at Tamarind(ditto)
-Two books authored by Tamarind Master Printer Paul Croft "Stone Lithography" and "Plate Lithograpy" (goes into more detail than the manuals but not as comprehensive as the two "Tamarind Books"

The manuals are easy, short and walk the reader through preparing, processing, printing and problem solving (I believe they were written in large part by TMP Jeff Sippel). Of all the books I used to help students the manuals were the ones students actually "stuck to". However, the "original" Tamarind book and its predecessor are excellent timeless references. Timeless. The newest version is so gorgeous aesthetically that I am afraid to take into the shop. One aspect of the new book that is reassuring is the uncompromising discussion about curating and documentation. It is a nice contrast to web sites and blogs citing....well, other than accurate information. Lastly, I love the book because of the notion that a book about an outdated, punishing, and time consuming medium can still be published with meticulous due care and attention to detail in an era of instant gratification.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable
My introduction to Tamarind began over thirty five years ago as an art student. My instructor, a master printmaker from the early Tamarind school, used a predecessor to this book as the classroom guide. This updated version is the definitive guide for lithographic printmaking and is a must have for the artist contemplating lithography. The material is technical but richly illustrated and represents an evolution of the techniques used for stone and plate lithography. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a must have
This extraordarly well written book is likely the definitive publication on lithography published in the past twenty years. It is packed with data and insightful information on the most accepted and used approaches to lithography.

5-0 out of 5 stars The New Fine Art Lithography Bible
The Tamarind Institute of Lithography at the University of New Mexico had already created the bible of the fine art lithography field in their "The Tamarind Book of Lithography: Art & Technique," published in 1971. This long-overdue new volume will probably be treasured as much as the previous one, and maybe for just as long. Produced by Devon (Tamarind Director), Lagattuta (Tamarind Master Printer), and Hamon (Tamarind Education Director), "Tamarind Techniques for Fine Art Lithography" not only has step-by-step directions for all the lithographic techniques used by Tamarind, but also includes instructions for setting up your own print studio, creating high-quality prints, maintaining edition sequences and caring for the finished products. There is health and safety information for the chemicals and inks used in production, which is a very nice addition. Above all, there are hundreds of pictures showing the steps for each technique, and illustrated by finished projects from the Institute over the last 40 years. While a specialized book for anyone interested in doing fine art lithography, this is a necessary purchase for your reference shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book from the people who wrote the book
This is a worthy and overdue successor to the long out of print "Tamarind Guide to Lithography".At the time that the Tamarind institute was formed the art of hand lithography was dying.Through their efforts it was revived and now thrives in many print studios. This book is detailed, well written and completely up to date.Anyone interested in pursuing hand litho methods should read it again and again. ... Product Description
A print is a pictorial image that has been produced by a process that enables it to be multiplied, and many of the best-known works by some of the world's greatest artists are prints. Yet little is understood about this popular art form. Now Antony Griffiths provides an excellent introduction for anyone who wishes to acquire a basic understanding of prints and printmaking. In succinct and lucid language, he explains the different printmaking techniques and shows both details and whole prints to demonstrate the effects that can be achieved. Woodcuts, engraving, etching, mezzotint, and lithography are among the many processes explained, illustrated, and placed within a historical context. This fully revised and updated edition of the highly praised 1980 British publication is available for the first time in the United States. With its complete glossary, index, and helpful illustrations, Griffiths's book is the essential foundation for an intelligent appreciation of the printmaker's art. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introductory reference
If you've just started your love affair with fine prints, you're sure to want a better understanding of just what this thing is and how its unique character came about. Griffiths's book would work well as your first guide to the technique and history of printmaking.

The tour starts with the major categories of technique (relief, intaglio, litho, and silkscreen), then discusses the extensions needed for printing in multiple colors, followed by a summary of photo processes applicable to each technique. This isn't a how-to for the aspiring printmaker or an academically meticulous history. Instead, it's just enough to let the new printlover know what the words mean and what the differences are, along with a sketch of the major who and when in printmaking innovation. I fault it only for under-representing the incredible art and technique of the Japanese woodcut masters.

Illustrations abound, demonstrating nearly every point that Griffiths brings up. The bibliography by itself is worth attention - it not only lists sources of information, it categorizes them by areas of interest and adds other comments about each one. Very few bibliographies in any field offer that kind of help to the reader. And, as the beginner might hope, it ends with a list of common abbreviations and a strong glossary. This book is a great way to introduce new printlovers to the object their of affection.

You can say that print was for an artistlike Rembrant a way of thinking. And you could even explain how thetechniques used by the artists were connected with their subjects. But youcan't only talk you must show some pictures. That is exactaly what thisbook does. The autor was very sucesfully in showing us the value ofprintmaking since the "unknow masters" to our century. 2-0 out of 5 stars ?
This book is complicated and difficult to follow.Although the procedure for etching and engraving is not a simple one, I found this to be particularly difficult to follow and unless familiar with this type of printmaking or have someone instructing who can answer questions or fill in the blanks, would not recommnend.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding text
Leaf's text covers a remarkable range of intaglio techniques. The first chapters cover the basics of tools, printing papers, and setting up a workshop. Next, she covers the basics of familiar printmaking techniques, etching (including soft ground), aquatint, and some interesting variations. This section also includes recipes for inks and grounds - not encyclopedic, but a basic set of materials for different techniques. Leaf covers each technique methodically, describing its goals, materials, and process. The end of each chapter offers an especially helpful "what went wrong" section.

Following the basics, Leaf continues with some elaborations, including multiple layers of aquatint and viscosity printing. She also lays out some unusual techniques, including collographs and "tuilegraphs." That's a fascinating variation on linoleum prints, but based on slightly different materials and very distinctive ways of creating the image in the printing surface.

Despite its strengths, this book has a few significant weak spots. Safety standards aren't always what a current reader would hope. For example, discussion of the corrosive etchants talks about flushing eyes with water in case of an acid spash, but doesn't mention goggles. Elsewhere, she mentions protective gloves in the text but omits those gloves from the photos that show the process under discussion. And, when it comes to disposing of spent etchant, I can't agree with pouring "neutralized acid on the ground where you don't expect anything to grow." On the positive side, techniques are profusely illustrated, showing both techniques and finished products.

Those problems just mean that the reader should approach this with a critical eye, not avoid it completely. There's just too much good here to give up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent on etching, needs more info on engraving
I cannot complain about Leaf's intro to etching. My only caveat is that although the title includes engraving, there is only one rudimentary chapter on engraving. But otherwise the structure and clarity of the the text is great. I'm always referring back to it.

Product Description

This highly anticipated and beautifully illustrated book examines the evolution of early printmaking in late medieval Europe. Through their means of production and the evidence of their utility, prints are explored in a broad social and economic context. Key topics include the complex problem of reconstructing the beginnings of the European woodcut; the practice of copying and dissemination of models endemic to the medium; and the varied functions of the print from the spiritual to the secular.

A team of expert authors examines the many ways in which fifteenth-century woodcuts and  metalcuts reflect the nature of piety and visual experience. Replicated images helped to structure private religious practice, transmit beliefs, disseminate knowledge about material facts, and graph abstract ideas. Mass-produced pictures made it feasible for people of all stations to possess them, thereby initiating a change in the role of images that eventually helped alter the definition of art itself.

The Origins of European Printmaking is an essential book for art historians, students, and collectors, as well as the general reader with an interest in medieval history and culture.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Inspiration Book
Though this book does introduce readers to basic concepts and techniques for a variety of printing methods, its real value for me came from the excellent examples by featured artists. It was so exciting to see what was possible with the various techniques (silk screen, collage, monotype, sun prints) that I couldn't wait to get started on my own projects. It doesn't have designs and templates for readers to copy; rather, it encourages people to find their own voice using paper, ink, fabric and a multitude of other affordable materials. Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book
This is a fun book. I really like how it's easy to read and is full of information. Shipping was fast too! Great job.

3-0 out of 5 stars Printmaking
It arrived on time. The book isn't what I expected, but it is still in great condition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Basics
This is a good book to have as an overview of several printmaking techniques that are useful for mixed media printmaking. I especially like the section on collagraph printing, but all sections and techniques were fun to read about, and fun to try. There are a LOT of great examples, in various artistic styles, and I like the fact that the author used other artists' work, not just her own - I think that makes for better imagineer-ing to the benefit of the reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars fun printing for all
I have done printmaking before but I do not have all the equipment now. I can still enjoy this when I follow the instructions in this book.
thank you for this fun thing.

Product Description

Praise for the first edition:

"An indispensable guide for those who make art out of the contrast between light and dark. And, it's a sheer pleasure for everyone else, thanks to its many wonderful illustrations."
-- Artsforum

"Walker's instruction is so clear and well organized that this handbook is perfect for the beginner."
-- American Artist

The history of woodcuts goes back more than a thousand years. Working carefully and with great precision, the woodcut artist carves a mirror image of a design on wood or other suitable material. The design is then inked and pressed against paper. The technique allows the artist to create an almost unlimited number of impressions of the same work. The precision of the work and the ability of the artist to create multiple impressions allow many fine woodcut artists to create pieces at a reasonable price, which an average collector can afford.

The Woodcut Artist's Handbook provides the basics of this craft with a detailed analysis of its tools and media. This improved second edition features two new chapters that teach artists step by step how to make an engraving and linocut. Artists can improve and develop considerable skill in this art by following these instructions and the author's professional tips. Beginners and advanced woodcutters and collectors will gain a deeper understanding of and appreciation for this craft and art.

This profusely illustrated book is ideal for artists, printmakers, designers and collectors.

3-0 out of 5 stars what 1 would xpect
i bought this book for 1 reason: to learn the terminology and the names of the tools used in woodcut/engraving so that i would be able to shop for said items without finding myself at the mercy of an art store clerk. to that end this book served its purpose. the rest of the information contained here is obvious to the point of being self-explanatory. if you have ever had an art course in elementary school or beyond you are probably familiar with the basic concepts behind relief printmaking and you are not likely to find anything new here. to be fair, the author states that the best way to learn these techniques is to practice and to observe the work of other artists. there are some really nice examples of the work of some remarkable wood-/linocut artists and engravers peppered throughout as well as toward the back of the book, but i cant help but to point out that the title is a little bit misleading. handbook? exactly how one would use this as some sort of ongoing reference escapes me. it is, at best, a competent - if not exhaustively thorough - introduction.

4-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what is should be...
Thank you Mr. Walker.
I'd have given 4-1/2 stars if possible. This book is exactly as advertised by it's title.Very readable and concise with clear illustrations. Understanding that this book is not a pretentious compendium of the entire history of woodcuts will increase your appreciation of what is presented.I have 30-years experience in printmaking, and found this book well worth the read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Woodcut Artist's Handbook
George Walker's Handbook is an excellent, enthusiastic introduction to relief printmaking.Although he favors engraving over woodcut he presents the basics of both and then takes the reader on through chapters on materials, tools, the creation of both woodcuts and engravings, papers and ink, printing, and an interesting section on editions. The art is placed in the historical context but he does point out those who are really interested in woodcuts should look at Rebecca Salter's Japanese Woodblock Printing.(I enthusiastically concur. They make a fine pair of books on the subject.)

The book is well illustrated for a small, introductory work.Seek larger format works if you want more breadth for woodcuts. However, he is very even handed and does have a good deal on contemporary work (and writes about it, too). There is a nice glossary, a good basic bibliography (although as Walker says many of the works are out of print), a brief biography of some of the major artists, a list of resoruces and organizations (with some email addresses), and an index.

All in all, for the aspiring woodcut artist this is an excellent introduction. The illustrations alone make it worth having. If you are interested in ukiyo-e, get Salter's book, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars NOT Missing in Action
This is in response to the Jeffery C. Chase review in which he incorrectly states that the work of Antonio Frasconi and Leonard Baskin were not mentioned in the Woodcut Artist's Handbook. They were mentioned and their work would have been reproduced in the book as well if the publisher had been granted reproduction rights. Frasconi's work is referred to on page 20 and The Complete Prints of Leonard Baskin by Alan Fern and Judith O'Sullivan (1984) is suggested reading on page 150. We tried to include as many artists as possible but because of copyright restrictions and limited resources we could not include everyone. Thank you for your comments.

2-0 out of 5 stars Missing in Action
How any book claiming to cover woodcut prints could fail to mention the works of Antonio Frasconi and Leonard Baskin, yet show half-baked attempts at wood engraving, or champion Barry Moser's soul-less technique as "mastery" is fundamentally lacking. While I thought the love of the medium did show through, and the coverage of the tools and techniques was sound, I think many lesser artists were mentioned, and without these two, it yields an anemic visual source for the interested artist. ...
