Great Reading!

I found the pertinent information concerning profiling very useful. The other 80% of the book is a continuous diatribe against the five founding members of the BSU as well as anyone ever professionally connected to them.

I would not recommend this book.

What I enjoy most about this book is the precision given to the vast detail of criminal profiling. Many people believe it to be like television portrays, however this book acts as a field manual teaching the techniques necessary for good teamwork and investigation into crime. Excellent information.Provides the novice writer and anyone else interested in investigating crime, a good background regarding types of criminals, investingation of the crime scene, etc.Well worth the purchase.

You have to be kidding!!This is total garbage!!
Holmes and Holmes make a feeble attempt to discredit the FBI in chapter one.What is ironic is the fact that 95% of the quality profiling theory contained in this "book" is cited from FBI authored sources.Mr. Holmes can't have it both ways.Mr. Holmes bashes the FBI and discredits their methods of profiling and at the same time almost his entire text is referencing the FBI journals on profiling written by Douglas, Ressler, Hazelwood and others.He constantly references the Crime Classification Manual, Sexual Homicide: Patterns and Motives, and the early 1980's articles written on profiling by the FBI.

This book is written at junior high school level.The mistakes are numerous and the wording is awkward and choppy.There is no depth at all to anything presented in this book.Anyone who actually finds value in this garbage should read "Profilers: Leading investigators take you inside the criminal mind," and "Sexual Homicide: Patterns and Motives."The first of these contains a compilation of the ACTUAL articles that Mr. Holmes's entire book is based on.

I will never read another book by Ronald Holmes again.

A bit shallow
This book provides a very brief overview on a broad range of topics, but does not give much depth.However, it does give a valuable list of resources for further study.

Good book, but probably not for someone with basic knowledge
I received this book extremely fast after ordering and was very excited to begin reading it.With my excitement rising, I began to read the preface and slowly my excitement began to fade.I am not an extremely fast reader and have not had a lot of experience with profiling or even psychology/behavioral science for that matter and the text seems to be based on someone having previous knowledge of the subject.After reading many books, there are two main types, written by a "writer" and written by a knowledgeable professional.This book was written by a knowledgeable professional and can be easily seen by the authors word/sentence structure choice as well as his ability to have his writing flow.

That said, the book is very interesting and I have not put it down, but the way it is written makes it difficult for the average reader.It goes through the basics of criminology and profiling allowing the reader to start from the beginning and work their way up to the more advanced material.The book often lists statistics for certain aspects such as type of crime percentage.It keeps your interest and once I start reading, its hard to put it down.

Overall, I would rate the writing/understanding as expressed by the stars, but content wise, the book is great.If you are interested in profiling or behavioral science and have a basic understanding of concepts, this book is for you.It takes a little while to get used to the writing style, but once you get the hang of it, you are not going to want to put it down.

Interesting reading
I was recently introduce to watching shows like Criminal Intent, Criminal Minds, Profiler and that lead to my interest on reading up on the human mind...and more specifically the criminal mind.

This book was very through with introducing all aspects involved with criminal profiling and my only disappointment was that there were not more case studies examples to flesh out the theory that was given in the book.

The ability to explain the scientific process of behavioural science and criminal investigative analysis in a straight forward easy to understand manner amazes me. This would give me a deeper appreciation with the interaction of the shows im watching.

Definately recommend to people who are interested with having a basic understanding of the criminal mind and the police investigation process.

Nice read!
I was excited to read this book and I'm glad I did. It was a little bit boring in the beginning because it starts with the basics and basic psychology and I already know most of the stuff. But it is a very good beginners book, I'm a nurse so nothing to do with forensics but have always been interested in these things. Glad I bought it.

Riveting, a must read.
One feels the tensions, the manacing stops and questions from the Troopers.A non-fiction account that reads like a gripping suspense novel, where the reader expects a surprise and is not disappointed.

racial profiling versus stereotype
Until I read this book I supported racial profiling because I confused profiling with stereotyping. But stereotypes are based on data, and whether true or not arestatistical. Profiling is probability, a forecasting process. In itself, there is nothing wrong with profiling, it is in its use that the trouble occurs, and in "The Black Dragon" profiling is misused to abuse constitutional issues and the State of New Jersey's Troopers abuse the prohibition against unlawful search and seizure profligately. Collum reconstructs the stopping of cars on the New Jersey Turnpike and how the people inside the stopped cars are manhandled, interrogated and terrified into consenting to illegal actions on the part of the troopers based solely on skin color. Unfortunately, if Collum's work is searched it shows that these illegal actions bring results, large numbers of drug runners are caught although they are primarily black, from the profile used. The profile can be changed, but is not, bacause it is so successful. When the profile is examined it is shown to be unjust since it is race specific. Collum attacks it on that basis, but I think it can be successfully defended, Collum does not nor does he try, he shows how it is incorrectly used by biased troopers with the bias extended to the highest echelons of law enforcement and thus is wrong. From his standpoint, and from his point of view it is wrong, unconstitutional and should be deleted. I agree with this, but only because the troopers are not made to use profiling correctly. The book does not report on this variation, profiling is inherently wrong. The book deserves reading, however, for showing how flaws develop and are not corrected.

Good Read
This book was a page turner.Goodness, at times I didn't know if I was more interested in this guy's personal or professional life.I really would like for him to have gotten back with Ana though...... But I do think she stayed way to long and put up with too much of his crap.

Nonetheless, this guy is just a guilty as the people he was around.I'm glad he is not on the force, settled down, and became a teacher and got married.I do think he exaggerated some of the stories though.I also don't think he is as innocent as he claims to be.

Lastly, I really couldn't put this book down.It was that good!

A courageous, sophisticated memoir with the soul of a novel.
Anyone who wants an inside look into the often-disturbing culture of inner-city policing should not hesitate to purchase this book.Mr. Juarez writes candidly and courageously about the problems and conflicts of law enforcement, but he also writes a moving account of his own personal journey.Stories of the author's upbringing in a working class, inner-city Chicago neighborhood are heavily drawn upon as Jaurez comes to analyze and ultimately question the morality of the entire criminal justice system, from the beat cop to the courthouse to the national agenda of the War on Drugs and War on Crime.The power of this book lies in the author's ability to take a sophisticated, broad view of the institutional prejudices of the American criminal justice system while providing deeply personal, and jarringly unfiltered accounts of life on the street.

This book is brutally honest and pulls no punches as it provides specific details of the underhanded practices of crooked cops: framing suspects, violent abuse, violent intimidation, theft, bribery, and vandalism.The book also details what seems like the very routine practice of falsifying reports to cover-up the offenses listed above, justify an unlawful arrest, or to guarantee a conviction.Mr. Juarez takes pains to emphasize that the overwhelming majority of the victims of such crimes are impoverished minorities.He even details how policies are emplemented specifically to avoid targeting middle and upper-class offenders.

Even though the officer exposes what seems to be widespread corruption and an institutional bias against poor minorities, I found it very fair.Juarez in no way exempts himself and provides numerous accounts of his own misdeads and his complicity in not speaking out when confronted with other officers' criminal acts.He also provides many examples of honest, hardworking cops and seems to conclude that the biggest problem facing criminal justice lies less with the individuals that make up the system than with the system itself.

As said in the title of this review, this memoir reads like a page-turing novel.Even given the disturbing details of misdeads and injustice, there were strong elements of an uplifting nature in this memoir as well.The author's own personal journey is inspiring and admirable.If only more of us had the courage to take an honest look at ourselves and the shortcomings of theinstitutions that surround us, we would find our culture in a better place.One can only hope this book might inspire others to that calling.

the truth is crazier than fiction!!!
this book is wild.the author joins the police force and discovers a world of privilege and violence.he often uses these things to his advantage, though he isn't violent and racist like many of the other cops.then he ends up getting fired for a really dumb reason (although he probably should have been fired for not doing his job earlier!)

overall this book shows a police force that keeps down minorities and punishes people for stupid things like smoking pot.also they use force in a completely inappropriate fashion for their own pleasure.the one that sticks out in my mind is when they come across a homeless guy trying to stay dry, and they totally ruin his day for no reason except cruelty.another time, a couple of cops destroy these black guys' nice car just for the hell of it.it's pretty obvious where the likes of NWA got their lyrical inspiration!whether you think the author is immature or not isn't really the issue.by the way he handles his romantic relationships, it's pretty obvious he was immature!but he was also a good guy surrounded by a bunch of jerks who enabled each other in their "brotherhood," much like A STREET GANG.ironic, huh?as for judging the police force, well this book was written a while ago.it's possible things have changed a lot since then.i don't know.these cops certainly aren't the calm, super-rational, protocol-following types you see on the show "cops," that's for sure.there are good and bad people in any profession.there are great cops.of course regardless of what kind of job the police are doing, many laws and societal changes need to take place in america, instead of basically arresting people for being poor and the author addresses thatthis book is full of drama and interesting stuff.i enjoyed it.

I want to thank Mr. Juarez for writing such and honest hard-hitting account of his years as an officer in the Chicago Police Department. You have shown that anyone who puts on the badge must confront not only the bad actors in our society but also the demons
nestled in one's own psyche. This is cautionary tale with a deeply redeeming ending; a must-read for anyone who is considering a career in law enforcement.

An honest look at the individual's contribution to a damaged system.
The storyline itself is enough to make a compelling read:ex-cop lays bare his once-secret past while exposing the prejudices of a flawed justice system. But Juarez's memoir is more than a salacious tell-all. It's an honest accounting of his own role within this system, and shines a desperately needed spotlight on the lack of personal accountability within our civic institutions.

Juarez has been called selfish and jaded by members of his own department for describing in intimate detail the brutal beatings, racially-motivated harrassment, theft and drug use rampant within the Chicago PD. In some communities, a third of the adults died in a single night, as anthropologist Charles Briggs and Clara Mantini-Briggs, a Venezuelan public health physician, reveal in their frontline report. It was evident that the number of deaths resulted not only from inadequacies in medical services but also from the failure of public health officials to inform residents that cholera was likely to arrive. Less evident were the ways that scientists, officials, and politicians connected representations of infectious diseases with images of social inequality. In Venezuela, cholera was racialized as officials used anthropological notions of "culture" in deflecting blame away from their institutions and onto the victims themselves. The disease, the space of the Orinoco Delta, and the "indigenous ethnic group" who suffered cholera all came to seem somehow synonymous.
One of the major threats to people's health worldwide is this deadly cycle of passing the blame. Psychological Profiling- It may after all be of help.
Crime Profiling originated in popualr writings of FBI Special Agents like Douglas and Ressler and caught the imagination of the world with Hollywood films like the 'Silence of the Lamb' and TV series like 'Profiliers', 'Cracker'. The last decade has seen acdemics attacking some of the fundamental postulates of the popular ideas on 'Offender Profiling". Today for each book advocating 'Offender Profiling' there is another book criticising 'Offender Profiling' and the battle lines were getting drawn with serious academics beginning to distance themselves from the Profiling Programme. As a practioner ( I work as a senior police officer in India) I was becoming cynical about salvaging anything from the initial promise of profiling as a helpful tool in investigating difficult crimes.
This book is the first serious attempt to bridge the gap and create a possible middle ground. It tells us the extent to which a criminal investigation can be enriched by inputs from serious academics and the manner in which such advice should be dealt with. I think it is a must-read for Police Officers and legal practioners around the world and should now show us the way to develop further collaboration between academics and practioners to make psychological profiling tenable and scientific.
The book avoids unnecessary academic jargons so typical of complex academic journals and is in the jenre of academic writings that are making a serious effort to reach out to practioners like me.

This is clearly a book for young adults or older kids. As such I find it brilliant in introducing criminal profiling.
It never gets in to deep, and the reason for the three star rating is that it doesnt get beyond informing the reader.
The book lacks questions for the reader to reflect upon, and though the subject is exciting, it doesnt inspire or challenge the reader.

what is criminal psychology, what you can do with that, etc...

good for the high school students to understand what is criminal psychology, or the undergrad students can have an idea about post-grad degrees...

In Chapter 1: The book addresses the questions, "What is Criminal Psychology" and "How Criminal Psychology works." It also helps the reader to understand the difference between criminal psychologists and profilers.The chapter also features an interesting section on real "Psychic" profilers whom have had success in helping police agencies fight crime.

Chapter II expounds on the many roles of the criminal psychologist e.g. crime scene analyst, detective, federal agent, probation officer, court advocate, educator, teacher, professor, trainer et al. The chapter discusses the various contexts where criminal psychology may be applied and renders general details as to the tasks performed by a professional in the field.

My daughter is 14 and very interested in criminal psychology. I found this book to be great for her. It is not over detailed but it gives enough information to spark more curiosity about the field and to answer questions that TV shows leave her asking. a must-have for investigators
For those who don't know the name, Rossmo is the detective / mathematician whose pioneering work on criminal profiling in Canada has helped re-shape the way investigators worldwide track down serial offenders. By mathematically studying the location and distribution of crimes, Rossmo developed a way of pinpointing the most likely location of the offender's home base. This book explains his work.

Written as a textbook, "Geographic Profiling" is clearly organized, packed with well-documented research, and is both theoretical enough to satisfy university researchers and practical enough to inform the rest of us. The book can at times be dense and a little tough to wade through, but it's worth it.

Even though you might gulp when you see the inexplicably high price tag on this book, if you're interested in understanding geographic profiling and the different ways that temporal and spatial crime distribution can assist in investigation, pick up a copy. You'll be glad you did.

Best there is
While the price can be a bit daunting, know that its well worth the pocket change. Turvey's book is beyond the best in criminal analysis, breaking down each of the many departments within the field and "spelling it out" for those who are less aware of the field.

Informative Text book
This book is very informative and easy to read. If you can find it used and in good condition - it's worth buying. If you are a student or in law enforcement, it's a must! I think the resell value holds well due to the wealth of knowledge you can find in this book. If you're a CSI fan - I think it is safe to say, it's a very interesting read. It's all real and you will find 'graphic' photos - if you're not able to handle this - I suggest you don't purchase it. There is alot to absorb and I wouldn't call it light reading.

This is a book on criminal profiling written by someone who hasn't ever solved a crime
I was disappointed that this book did little more than travel over already broken ground. This book does little more than criticize several well known FBI profilers such as Robert Ressler, John Douglas, Gregg McCrary, Ray Hazelwood, and Pete Smerick while heaping praise on Brent Turvey who has never solved any real crimes that I know. In one passage it states that Turvey came up with the insight that "Criminals lie about their crimes after having unlimited access to Jerome Brudos. In the 1980's Robert Ressler and John Douglas made it a point to read up all the case files and other information available prior to interviewing each of the subjects in their early studies; Edmund Kemper, Charles Manson, Monte Rissell, Son of Sam David Berkowitz, Ted Bundy, William Hierens, and Jerry Brudos. Ressler and Douglas stated that because these notorious criminals had been in prison for so long they'd each thought up all kinds of ways to justify their crimes to make themselves sound more sympathetic. I was also struck by the childish attitude of the book that theirs is only one way to perform profiling. This book sheds no new light on profiling and doesn't discuss any new cases, instead it skips aroundthe highlights of other old cases and heaps criticisms on the real profilers who solved the crimes. Don't waste your time or money on this.

Avoid the self proclaimed "criminal profiler"
Brent Turvey has placed some nice pictures and logical ideas in his book however, the reader must keep in mind that Mr Turvey is a self proclaimed "criminal profiler."The book is worth a flip through but not recommended to be on your shelf, if you work in the field of forensic psychology.It is this reader's recommendation to stick to books written by Dr. David Canter, Dr. Laurence Alison and academic journals if you are involved on hands on work in the field.

Do not buy this book
This book is awful I can't beleave I spent money on it. Brent Turvey must have been turned down for a FBI's BSU for a job. Now he spends his time writing books that make people dUmbEr and slaming some of the best Profilers in the world. Do yourself a favor and save your money and I'll tag it under juck. ... Read more

Thoughtful, intelligent read
This book a refreshing change from the majority of dating and self-help books because it was actually intelligently written while still being interesting. The author arms you with valuable information about personality types but leaves it up to you to decide what to do with it (because the reader is, of course, intelligent!). I found it useful not only in the dating realm, but in trying to figure out patterns within other relationships (friends, bosses, etc.). I actually want to re-read it. The only other self-help books I've found to be as useful were Melody Beattie's.

Smart Woman's Guide
Sometime's even smart women need a little guidance! I really liked the approach that Caroline took with this book, not following the trend of other dating books by trying to be quirky with catchy lingo or too hip. She came across like one smart woman to another...even a little therapist thrown in but not in an obvious way. I felt like I was listening to a friend tell me like it is, someone who actually cared about my well-being so I was willing to sit and listen. She hits on all the basic topics but still allows the reader to make up her own mind. Certainly every situation out there can't be black and white so it was refreshing to read that I had options for once. I was most interested in the commitment phobic men chapters and how to see the warning signs rather than someone who just isn't interested in me. I felt that I learned something by reading this, all without feeling juvenile. This book works for all ages and I hope other smart women will pick it up!

Had the pleasure of meeting author YEARS ago when a friend of mine, C. Guajardo was her friend and lived in Ohio.Mrs C G recommended this book after my divorce and making my way back into singlehood.Boy did this book give me some clarity on my former marriage.. Creating problems where problems don't exist
Who said that thinking like a therapist was a pre-requisite to dating?No one did, and no one should take this book seriously.Why?

"Profiling Your Date" is one of those types of books written to help you solve a problem where a problem does not exist, chiefly, how to determine using a pre-set guide what red-flags to look for as you, the woman, begin your "analysis" of your date.

What the "doctor" fails to understand, or perhaps simply does not understand is that, whether you are a man or whether you are a woman isn't the heart of the matter.Both men and women have preferences in their desires for members of the opposite sex, and in the dating arena it simply is ludicrous for any one (again, man or woman) to base their prefernces on psychological criteria developed by someone else, aka, the "doctor".

Quite simply, the "doctor" has forgotten that dating was and is as natural and as much a part of normal life as waking up in the morning, shaving, showering, getting dressed and going about your business.It is second nature:there isn't second guessing or guess work.You don't need to buy a book, take a course or read a seminar.The doctor forgets that there are no "dating" experts:they don't exist, because there is no need.I mean, come on:who learns how to drive, gets their license and still drives around with an instructor in the car?No body.

If you want to date, just do it.Be yourself, and take as little personal baggage into the adventure as you possibly can.Both men and women (mature men and women) prefer others who, yes, are attractive, appealing and possess physcial traits that they admire and adore.But equally as important, men and women intrinsically know, from their unique perspective, if you, the member of the opposite sex, know yourself, like yourself and offer to yourself and to others the harmony, passion and romance which are key ingredients in making dating or a long term relationship work.

Believe me...please believe me!This book will screw you up into thinking your date has problems, when in fact, if you discover anything wrong with him or her, it will actually be a reflection of the short comings you have failed to come to grips as being your own.

Interesting
I bought this for my husband at the time when he wanted to pursue law enforcement - he read it fairly quickly and held his interest.Nothing "new" but nonetheless intriquing.

Finally somebody gets it
I have been a cop for 17 years. I was skeptical of another book on racial profiling that bashes cops. A friend of mine gave me this book to read for training, and i was very surprised that someone finally got it.There is so much about this topic that the public does not know. This book finally gives a cops perspective and tells why, in most cases, cops are not racist.Every person in America racially profiles, and this book explains why. I was fascinated by the in depth discussion in one chapter that explains racism. The book also opened by eyes to the harm the victims suffer at the hands of some cops. I think everyone has something to learn from this book. The book finally sheds some light on data collection and why it will not work. Instead of re-hashing the same old "solutions," the book actually explores some innovative new ideas that should be implemented by law enforcement. Thanks for covering this subject in a whole new light!!

Incredible and comprehensive work on this subject
I am an avid reader on the subjects of civil rights and racial profiling. This book, simply put, is incredible. I thought I had a firm opinion on the subject, but after reading this book, I really see that there are two sides to this complicated issue. All is not always what you see. This book covers every possible aspect of this subject, and delves into areas that I have not seen covered before. I had never before considered the side of law enforcement, nor did I understand what was really going on behind the scenes. I also never really viewed this subject outside of the "black and white" issue.The authors reminded me that racial profiling effects every one of us. Now I can more effectively become involved in the fight towards racial justice with a more focused understanding of why racial profiling occurs and what can be done to stop this practice.
