Packed With Knowledge!
Greg Elmer pulls the veil off the universal practice of consumer profiling and data-collection, and demonstrates its deep societal influence. Daily, when you swipe a credit card or buy a magazine or go online, your personal habits are monitored - and someone will use that information to make a buck. Both in terms of its topic and its treatment, this book should be too theoretical to hold much interest for the business public. Who cares about communications theory as applied to the continual mapping of personal consumer information? However, you can't push this into a dusty corner, because the subtle cultural effect of the increasingly close monitoring and data mining of consumer behavior is too powerful to overlook. While the book has a slightly dry, academic direction, we still strongly recommend it to those who are curious whether the juggernaut economic machine will steamroll over the privacy rights of those who use and feed it.

Learning from an insider
This book is an excellent guide to familiarize oneself with the issues of cyberspace. It not only provides an overview of the history, ethics, and types of hacking but outlines the different actors, differentiates their actions, and proposes a typology. It is therefore one of the few books on this topic that moves beyond the anecdotal and is an attempt at a more substantive, long-term approach to examine critical issues tied to cyberspace, notably the profiling of criminal hackers. After reading for several years the virtual propaganda that seems to have become the unfortunate norm in the field of criminal profiling a book has finally emerged which honestly and most importantly - objectively - canvasses all of the work in this area. Without a doubt this book is a significant triumph for anyone who seriously wants to 'learn' about criminal profiling as opposed to simply reading the usual aggrandizing rubbish so many authors in this field seem to produce. Great information and an interesting read!
I found this book to be very interesting. I learned a great deal about profiling, and the author used various cases to explain the training one must go through in order to become a profiler. The cases were interesting; I recognized a few because they were "famous," but others were ones with which I was not familiar. He goes into detail about what is involved with giving a profile as well as other types of work that he has done as part of the Behavioral Science Unit in the FBI. All of it is quite fascinating and very clear--you will definitely know what you need to do in order to get close to having a chance at a job like this if you are interested. If not, and you are just interested in what goes on with profiling and how serial killers/rapists, etc. are caught, I think you will still find it to be a captivating read.

This genre can be kind of dark, but this book is well-written and certainly interesting. He covers numerous cases and the descriptions are fascinating.

Another perspective on Criminal Profiling
The Unknown Darkness: Profiling the Predators Among Us
Having read a large number of true crime books and many in the area of criminal profiling this is one I would highly recommend on the subject. McCrary comes across as one of the more modest of his many colleagues. The books chapters follow a number of well known cases such as Waco, The Sam Sheppard Case, The 'Ken and Barbie' case following Paul Bernardo as the Scarborough Rapest and his later murders. The book is cleverly written as each story portrays different aspects of Criminal Investigative Analysis from personality profiling, interview techniques, hostage negotiations, crime scene analysis etc. It is a well written, easy to read book for first time crime readers through to the avid fans of the genre.I found it very hard to put down until I had gone 'cover to cover'. McCrary's narrative and obvious knowledge flows easily throughout.

Interesting Peek into a Dark World
The book reads like a really long research paper, which will turn off some people.It's an intense read with case details and insights into dark minds.The transitions between chapters are nicely handled so that it doesn't seem like a collection of loosely connected notes.

It's not really a "fun" book, but it is informative and highly interesting.Those looking for thrills should look elsewhere, but those looking for honest, intellectual insight into how the predators think have found what they're looking for.

Only for Crime Reading Enthusiasts!
Okay, I have read better books but I believe the author's role in the Karla Homolka and Paul Bernardo's dispicable crimes in the murders of three innocent young ladies including Karla's sister is worth reading in the first place if you followed the crimes. Now, Karla is a free woman. Paul will be eligible for parole in 2020 according to the book. I understand profiling is not an exact science. The author writes about the miss in the Hindu Mass HOmicide case where nine innocent monks including a nun were killed execution style for literally peanuts of their wealth. They would have probably given them everything they asked for if they were given the opportunity. The author does lose me with the David Koresh and the Waco situation. I don't believe he firmly explained how dangerous Koresh was specifically. As a reader, we know he followed in the footsteps of another monster, Jim Jones, but the author never clarifies the process of Koresh's madness from leader to dictator in his small congregation. The book is really for crime enthusiasts like myself who enjoys reading about crime and what makes people tick. He is accurate in his depiction of Paul and Karla's crimes against young virginal women including Karla's sister, Tammy Lynn. She was a Christmas Present for Paul from his beloved fiance, Karla. Their relationship was twisted and Karla knew of Paul's crime spree as the Scarborough Rapist but supported it as a game. It still angers me that Karla was released and that Paul may have a chance at parole. Write the Canadian parole boards to stop this from happening. As for Karla, she's the most hated woman in Canada. He also writes in detail about Arthur Shawcross's crimes as a serial killer. There is the European serial killer, Jack Untweger, but he doesn't go into detail about his crimes. He is not as clear as he is about Shawcross' crimes. ... Read more

Not much here
I'm looking for something to help me "prejudge" a new player to the table and he really doesn't give me much that would be helpful. I'm glad I didn't pay full price.

Nothing insightful here
Most everything included here is common sense.There are a few important concepts included here, but they are better covered in other texts.

Just Common Knowledge
I didn't find much use for this book.This author's explanations on "profiling" will not help anyone who has basic common sense. The profiling facts offered don't translate into real help in beating the types of poker players we often confront.e.g. I'll paraphrase one profile: -People who refuse to tip the dealer after winning a hand are cheap and self-centered. People who do tip are typically compassionate and more likely to have a feel for what other people are doing.Do you want one more?OK. -People who dress smartly, wear expensive clothes and play in low-stakes poker games probably don't care as much about the money involved than the thrill of playing the game.If these common sense facts are new to you, and you think they can help you play better, then buy this book.If not, save your money.

Learning to read opponents is key!
Wow!I have been reading alot of the recommended poker books to learn the pot odds, good starting hands, preflop, flop, and river play, etc... and I have become a winning player following all the suggestions in these books.Then, I came across Profiling Poker "Nitwits", read it, and tried these ideas as well with my game, and now my win rate has doubled!This book teaches you how to read your opponents, study their mannerisms at the table and while they are in a hand, and also helps you figure out based upon their appearance what kind of plays they would be inclined to make.Working on trying to figure out what your opponents will to do in any situation at the table, coupled with making the right percentage plays is definately key!I felt that something was missing from my game before I read this book...now I know.I had to learn to play the game from both angles, and I did.I'm thrilled this book came along...Thanks!

Not much Here
This is a pretty short book that I believe lacks substance.I guess it is good to think about some of the items, but the entire book could have been summarized in 3 or 4 pages.I was hopeful at first when the author mentioned having researched FBI profiling techniques.This in itself would be interesting to me, but there seemed to be so much left out unless the FBI only has a small pamphlet on profiling.Some chapters seemed to be text cited from other sources with loose application, at best.I do not think there is much here except for 2 or 3 good points.Not worth the price if you ask me. ... Ivory tower rubbish
If you take Harcourt's ivory tower exercise and put it into practice, there would be chaos, more crime and violence. Actuarial methods have an 80 year history, are widely used in the United States, the British Commonwealth and the European Union in the prison and psychiatric hospital systems. Unfortunately since the author is an academic he rarely experiences the real life on the urban streets of his own city where there were 620 murders last year. It's another academic argument like his fellow U of C professor Becker's "rationally maximizing utility" that will fall by the wayside. A century from now, few will read let alone pay attention to this book.

I am a few chapters into this book and it is making some good points, but finding the points is very difficult.The author is in love with esoteric words and long, complex sentences.He could make his points much more powerfully with fewer and simpler words. ... Read more

Generally, the book presents an average overview of offender profiling. However, theEditors give credit to the FBI in several passages for the rape model,power assertive, anger retaliatory, etc, but it was in fact Prentky andKnight who first developed this type of rape classification scheme. Also,the book claims to represent researchers' opinions from all around theworld on 'profiling,' however, the fact is, there is not one Americanauthor in the book.

Boring
This was incredibly boring.I managed to get through Chapter 3 and stopped.I just couldn't digest any more.There are other far more interesting criminal books out there.

informative, though somewhat uneven
In this offering David Canter, one of the leading theorists in geographic profiling and how environmental psychology relates to crime, offers a detailed look at how space and time relate to criminal activity.

As with his previous works, I was fascinated by his observations which, when you think about them all make remarkable sense. Yet just like most common sense, his work is anything but common. This book is much better than "Criminal Shadows." He has improved his writing, added more detail and description, and fleshed out some of the principle and practice of mapping crime. He also does an admirable job of avoiding the self-aggrandizing tone of so many of the true crime books written by profilers.

While I would recommend this book, I will mention that it seems unbalanced, as if someone else wrote some of the chapters. The tone, the writing style, even the content seem to shift back and forth leaving the reader confused on which voice, which part of the work, is really Dr. Canter's. All that said, anyone interested in the emerging field of geographic profiling will enjoy and benefit from this book.

Mapping Murder is a fascinating, inspiring read. Professor Canter is the world's foremost academic authority on psychological offender profiling so this was always going to be rather different from many other books in this area.

One of the Better Titles
I found Canter's book to be very useful. This is decidedly the best popular book currently available on the topic of geographic profiling and as such I highly recommend it for students of forensic psychology. The book provides enough research to keep the professional interested, yet it is written clearly so that the student can appreciate it as well. I found this book to be both good reading and a good review of the literature on this topic, and the latter is something almost always lacking in popular books on profiling. Highly recommended. ... disappointing
I thought that book will have some more information about the code in Valgrind-core. So, any developer can use it as a developer guide.
Actually, the book is like user-guide that list the tools in valgrind and how to invoke them through command line.

Valuable Resource for a Valuable Tool
Ordinarily I wince at the notion of a book dedicated to an open source tool. Usually online resources are abundant and a book only summarizes the information that is already freely available.

My thoughts are different for the Valgrind Develpment Team's manual for Valgrind 3.3. Admittedly, this is a very advanced tool for developers. Having used it myself I find the tool and the authors' in-depth explanation to the nuances and pitfalls of such advanced debugging invaluable.

The audience may be small for such a publication but if you do any development on Linux (and now Mac OS X and *BSD) then Valgrind should be part of your development and testing plan.

The definitive guide to Valgrind
This book is a nice little reference to Valgrind.It covers pretty much the common stuff you'll use Valgrind for.It is the first book I've ever bought that is licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License.The book is also available online, but since it's a pretty inexpensive book, I like having a dead tree version.Plus, I'm sure my money is going to some good cause. ... This book basicly tells you to study a person and ask question about this person. This is another good starter book but not for someone that has any knowledge on the subject already. Its starts a weak profile on a person then stops.

Operationally Useful in Crime Analysis
As a PhD student and Law Enforcement Officer, I see great potential for this book to be useful to others in this field.For example, this gives the reader a great summary of years of research in Investigative Psychology and case studies which indicate the potential of this knowledge.

Great Text!
The text was very easy to read. Chapter two gave a brilliant exploration of the history and theory behind Investigative Psychology. Chapter five was difficult to grasp, but understandable due to the nature of facet theory. Otherwise, a great read all around!

disappointing
in a book like this i am expecting DETAILED reveiw of the crimes with DETAIL on exactly every single act committed during the crime.there is only one really good scene in this entire book where a serial killer describes in detail how he felt attacking his victims. that was great. the problem was the whole book needs to be like that. i hate glossed over crap as this book in 90% of the content.

Very Informative
As someone who works with troubled teens, I can see characteristics to watch for those who may be more disturbed than I had thought. This book is very important for anyone who has the opportunity to identify one of these monsters before they can destroy people.

Frighteningly accurate portrayal of these monsters.
I was riveted and kept reading about the terrible people who are so primitive and savage. Reading about the 'Pairs' was very scary. When two people are egging one another on to do even more terrible things, the result is even more horror.
Dr. Kauflin is right on the mark with her book and I suspect that she will become a consultant to police departments all over the world with her expertise. Meanwhile, I will be waiting for her next book.
