5-0 out of 5 stars Good info on prostate cancer
Dr. Walsh's book has been very helpful as my husband has gone through the process of finding out he has prostate cancer, to having a prostatectomy. He is going to have radiation soon, and the book explains all the options, and what to expect before, during and after each treatment. My husband's Dr. recommended it, and we have referred to it often.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT FOR THE LAYMAN
This is an excellent book on prostate cancer. It was recommended by our physician and is a great guide for the patient who is having to make treatment choices. Clearly written, easy to understand, good explanations, couldn't be better. It is good to have this information at hand as it reaffirmed my husband's choice concerning treatment options. It clearly informed him of the risks and benefits of each treatment and addressed the best treatment plan for his rating of prostate cancer. Again, an excellent book, well written and easy for the average person to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have questions about prostate cancer treatments read this book!
If you have been diagnosed with prostate cancer, know or love someone who has, or have concerns about prostate cancer due to a family history, you must read Bob Marckini's book.It is an absolute wealth of information written by an intelligent, inquisitive engineer and spelled out in laymen's terms that anyone can understand. You'll know what questions to ask and be much better informed about the answers you are, or are not receiving. As a resource tool alone it is a treasure for where to find additional information. The writer admits to a bias for proton treatment and for good reason.Read his book and you'll understand why.I did and was about to make a decision between robotic assisted surgery and proton treatment.I was leaning heavily toward proton treatment when I received a phone call that changed everything.

Because of the advice in Bob's book I understood the pathology report on my biopsy slides was subjective and should be read by two different laboratories. One of the many resources in the book was a list of a few of the premier labs in the country.I took this advice and sent my slides off just to confirm if the cancer was any worse, or better than indicated on the first report. The call I received was from Dr. Epstein, the Director of Surgical Pathology at Johns Hopkins, telling me "you do not have cancer".What I do have is an amended pathology report and a letter of apology from the first pathologist.Read the book, question everything, question everyone and then act on it.Whatever course of treatment you select, you'll have the confidence and convection you're making an informed decision that you can live with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surgery is OVERTREATMENT they won't tell you but Bob will.
This book is a MUST READ!If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer you will not regret it!This book is a true treasure map to figuring out the MANY treatment options available and ALL of the pros/cons for them....The author footnotes statistics from medical journals showing that all of the treatment options have the same basic results for a cure but many different outcomes of SIDE effects and caliber of life AFTER treatment!Being recently diagnosed this year (2010) with PC myself as a 42 year old, I know firsthand how confusing all of the treatment options can be.I also know firsthand how each doctor in their prospective fields ranging from surgery to radiation can also be salesmen towards THEIR specialty which may or MAYNOT be in YOUR best interest! This book clamed my fears, settled my nerves and put me on a path that I know will cure me and leave me with the best possible outcome concerning the side effects. You will have to look for yourself but statistics don't lie....No doctor gave me anything close to what Robert J. Marckini (the author) did by arming me with this vital information!Kudos Bob!

5-0 out of 5 stars After reading Boberts book my decision which treatment to choose was easy and fast
Shortly after retiring from a major fire department with 38 years of service, a routine blood test showed a high PSA score.Soon tests showed I had stage two PC.Of course right to internet and WOW lots of treatments from Watchful waiting to removal, and several other treatments.Needless to say i did not know what any of the treatments entailed, such as success, and most important to me was after cancer life style.

A friend advised me to read "YOU CAN BEAT PROSTATE CANCERand ... by Robert Marckini. After reading Bob's book the correct treatment for me jumped out of book with absolute certainty.

I won't say which treatment WE chose, but I just had my six month checkup after treatment and my PSA was down to .071.In addition I have full control of my bladder functions, no dripping or diapers, no loss of sexual functions.

Thanks to my friend and to Robert Marckini and the medical provider I am cancer free.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every page was of value to me. Every page.
I did not skim over any of this outstanding book.I read every page and I found value in every single page.Like the author, Bob Marckini, I am a "recovering engineer."Although retired, I still think logically and I naturally enjoy solving problems. He does that too. It's genetic.I like facts, not fiction. And I appreciate his balanced comparison of alternative treatment methods.

Don't misunderstand. There is humor. And there are interesting stories to make his points. All of it is well done.I now understand all the major treatment options along with their advantages and disadvantages. I know I have to look out for myself. Now I am way better equipped to do that. Most importantly, I learned about Proton Treatment. It is a miracle of medicine and engineering. And that is the treatment I intend to seek. But you can decide for yourself. It is a great read and a fine reference book.

Robert Marckini's book, "You can beat Prostrate Cancer" is a superb collection of practical information and advice for the patient diagnosed with prostrate cancer. It is written from the point of view of a patient with prostrate cancer and how he can overcomes this disease through treatment from Proton Therapy. Mr Marckini offers the patient advice on how to take charge of his treatment and advocates the use of proton therapy for qualified prostrate cancer patients to reduce pain and discomfort associated with the side effects of prostrate cancer treatment. 5-0 out of 5 stars Must have reading!
This book is a "must have" for anyone diagnosed or caring for someone who is diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. Even though I have already had the surgery I found the book to be very helpful when discussing the disease with friends and colleagues. It takes a lot of soul searching to come up with the right course of treatment to follow. The many different experiences related here could make a difference in the way you feel or reassure you that you are on the right track. I found the detail to be very true to my experience and I only wish I had this book 4 years ago when I was diagnosed.
The one thing that I brought away from my reading was that I was not alone, and that was the major thought in my mind when the call came in from my Urologist! I urge anyone who has or supports someone who has prostate cancer to read this book!
YOU ARE NOT ALONE....

5-0 out of 5 stars Information that is easily read and informative+
This product is an informative guide to someone that needs this information. The book is a primer to aid in the more technical
and indepth questions you may ask your doctor.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Common Sense Explanation of Prostate Cancer
When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer back in 2003, I panicked and tried to get all information necessary about prostate cancer. Somehow, I found this book at a big bookstore and I purchased it because the other books on prostate cancer were eithe too wordy or too hard to understand. This book told me all I wanted to know in such an easy way for a layman like me could understand. I highly recommended and I purchased this book for a friend who was just recently diagnosed. If you like the "simple, common sense, and real understanding" of prostate cancer, read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book before you do anything
Absolutely the best source of information on Prostate Cancer and I've bought and read most of them. Easy to read and straight forward for all readers. So don't make any decisions until you read this book.I'm a health care professional and even I benefited from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the Newly Informed Cancer Patient, BUT CAUTION!
I freaked out when I was told by my urologist, just a few months ago, that my biopsy showed prostate cancer and---by the way---would I like to be put on his surgery schedule for next month! This is a fabulous book and one I throughly recommend for the newly diagnosed man who is reeling from the shock of getting this rotten news and not sure what to do.HOWEVER, the book is written by an American surgeon and that means a heavy bias toward treatment for everyone (even low risk cancers) and preferably surgery. It turned out, in my case, that the cancer is less aggressive than my urologist was leading me to believe (get that second opinion!).Monitoring the cancer for changes is a defensible strategy for avoiding the awful side effects of ANY of the treatments for prostate cancer, if your cancer is at a low to medium risk. All that said, this is still a great book and covers most all the bases.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative Primer on Prostate Cancer
My husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1999.He has had two cryo ablation procedures and yet still has the cancer (confined to the prostate).Having worked for a well-known urologist for many years, I feel Dr. Lange's book is the best literature we have read over the years and has helped answer the many questions we have had in language my husband can understand. Our urologist, however, spends a great deal of time with us explaining everything. ... Product Description
Finally, a much-needed voice for the spouses and partners of prostate cancer survivors--an unflinchingly honest and beautifully written memoir about one couple's struggles and transformation that serves as a guide for others dealing with the disease.

Facts:
* Prostate cancer is the most common cancer, other than skin cancers, in American men.
* 90% of the 190,000 men diagnosed annually will be cured.
* 2 million men currently live as survivors.

Though many sources exist for men dealing with this dreaded disease, their partners are often left on their own to figure out how to deal with personality changes and sudden "male menopause," how to redefine love and intimacy, and how to deal with side effects of the treatment.

Victoria Hallerman, an accomplished poet, writes candidly about her and her husband's experience over the last five years, including sections in his voice as well. A manual for surviving what treatments can do to a marriage, her book is both a compelling narrative and a supportive and informational guidebook. It's sure to be a boon to the enormous and ever-growing group of wives and partners of prostate cancer survivors who, like the author, need to be able to answer the question "Who are we now?" ... 5-0 out of 5 stars How We Survived Prostate Cancer: What We Did and What We Should Have Done
This book was an excellent guide for us. I ordered it the day we found out my husband had prostate cancer, and it helped us tremendously in making the decision on how to treat him. Ms. Hallerman covers all the treatment modalities, discusses the positive and negative aspects, and opening discusses the emotional effects of both having the disease and being a caretaker/helpmate of the patient. My husband is anticipating his surgery with substantially less fear than he had prior to our reading the book, and I am feeling very confident that our decision was the right one. I highly recommend this book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Let's blame everyone else for what we experience
The author and her husband were living in a perfect world before prostate cancer appeared. From the second the husband broke the news to her (belatedly, under the guise of "protecting her"), it became a voyage of despair and nightmares of doctors who supposedly didn't care about them and supposedly didn't give them all the info they needed. They resent not being warned about changing emotional states and other treatment options.I guess it's good to know that there are such elements to consider when going through the process, but acceptance should make all these things easier to swallow, rather than resistance and blaming at every turn... perhaps the book would appeal more to couples with an axe to grind over this very natural and common form of cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars review book
very good book, clearly written. pretty depressing if you read it after you have selected treatment and it failed, so make sure you read it before you select your treatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE GO-TO BOOK FOR MORAL SUPPORT AND ENLIGHTENMENT
HOW WE SURVIVED PROSTATE CANCER is a guide, a psychologist and a medical primer to everything you need to know. This beautifully written book holds your hand, points out the icy patches and guides you through the confusing maze of differing opinions, treatment choices and approaches to dealing with the diagnosis.

Victoria Hallerman examines the emotional and physical fallout of each of the choices she and Dean made during this stressful time. She also carefully describes how they each dealt with having made some, ultimately, unfortunate choices and how this affected their relationship.

If you're in this situation, How WE SURVIVED PROSTATE CANCER is the best possible choice you can make. It may, for you, be the neon-colored cone that prevents you from sinking into an enormous pothole on a very rough road.

5-0 out of 5 stars I thought this book was excellent, even before my own diagnosis.
My first reaction to this excellent book was one of admiration that Hallerman could construct at once a moving personal account of a marriage under siege of health crisis, a constructive guide to intelligently navigating a daunting sea of doctors, treatments and medical decisions and an invaluable resource for treatment information, support groups and internet research. This was as an objective reader and acquaintance of Ms. Hallerman.
But when I received my own diagnosis of prostate cancer shortly after this first reading, I hurried back to the book with a new appreciation of her step by step approach to making my own decisions; the wealth of information gathered in one book; the brilliant inclusion of her husband's thoughts and experiences and her steadfast insistence on getting multiple opinions and not settling for a doctor I wasn't comfortable with.
I credit her book with my own decision to switch to my `second opinion' doctor when I was under whelmed by my diagnosing surgeon and his recommendation for a radiation oncologist.I sent a copy to my GP and he said that reading Hallerman's account of her husband's hormone deprivation therapy `changed his mind' about his absolute endorsement of its use.
This book is recommended for anyone making tough medical decisions as a couple and required reading for prostate cancer sufferers and their partners.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Info
This is a good book that details lots of information and possiblities. It needs to be updated as the treatment options are changing rapidly for this disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Current
Not something I would read in front of a fire on a cold night for entertainment, but the best source of up to date material on the subject of the prostate.Compared to two other books this one is far and above the most detailed and concice. If you only read one book on this subject, this should be the one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Marks on Prostrate Cancer
Dr. Marks' book was recommended to me by my Urologist just after he told me that I had prostate cancer. It is an excellent first book for anyone who has just learned that he has prostate cancer, as I did, or for a family member or friend who has just learned. For a little more detail, after reading Marks' book, one might read the book on prostate cancer by Dr. Patrick Walsh of Johns Hopkins. With those two books, I felt as though I had a good understanding of the background, pros, and cons of the treatments available. If one is leaning toward radiation treatment, he might also want to read a book written by a doctor who provides radiation treatment.

1-0 out of 5 stars Biased and inaccurate
While this book provides much information that is helpful and accurate, and in a good Q&A format, readers should know that the author has a clear bias towards surgery versus other approaches and includes some misinformation. For patients trying to get objective, unbiased information to make reasonable choices between RP (surgery), RT (usually brachytherapy for early stage), or active surveillance, this is not a helpful resource. In particular, the author appears unaware of the use of active surveillance for younger patients with low Gleason sum, low PSA, and early stage -- surveillance that, despite what the author says, does include biopsies every six months (preferably with more than 12 cores) as well as PSA and digital exam several times a year. There are better books and better information out there.Google the topic and find recent articles in Oncology magazine (October 2009).

Product Description
Every year almost a quarter of a million confused and frightened American men are tossed into a prostate cancer cauldron stirred by salespeople representing a multibillion-dollar industry. In this flourishing business, the radical prostatectomy is still the most widely recommended treatment option. Yet a recent and definitive study in the New England Journal of Medicine concluded that out of the fifty thousand prostate operations performed annually, more than forty thousand are unjustified. But this is no surprise given that 99 percent of all doctors treating this disease are surgeons or radiation therapists. The appalling fact is that men are still being rushed into a major operation that rarely prolongs life and more than half the time leaves them impotent.

Invasion of the Prostate Snatchers
is a report on the latest thinking in prostate cancer therapy: close monitoring–active surveillance rather than surgery or radiation–should be the initial treatment approach for many men. There are three stages of prostate cancer and this book will provide accurate information about how to distinguish between them: Low-Risk, which requires no immediate treatment; Intermediate-Risk, which will benefit from surgery, radiation, and/or hormonal therapy; and High-Risk, a type that does require immediate treatment with a combination of therapies. In a unique collaboration, doctor and patient provide a wholly new perspective on managing this disease. Ralph Blum’s account of his personal struggle, together with Dr.Mark Scholz’s presentation of newscientific advances, provides convincing evidence that this noninvasive approach can be crucial in preventing tens of thousands of men from being overtreated every year. Invasion of the Prostate Snatchers serves as an indispensable map through the medical minefield of prostate cancer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One Thing All Men Should Know About Prostate Cancer!!
I was diagnosed with early stage, low-risk prostate cancer in April. Through a combination of support from my wife, friends, diet, meditation, prayer and excercise, I was told by a new doctor on October 15th (through an extensive blood panel) that either the cancer was inactive or had gone away.

On the way to visit him in San Diego, I read this book and learned one very important thing among several -- If a man is diagnosed with early stage cancer and does nothing different, he still will almost certainly live at least another 10 years. None of the doctors I visited here in Charlotte bothered to mention that.

There's so much you can do on your own without surgery or drugs. This book encourages you to do just that!

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ FOR THOSE CONCERNED ABOUT PROSTATE CANCER
In a few words, this book is informative, objective, expert, wise, sound, courageous, reliable and readable!I'm an eleven year veteran of a challenging case, doing very well, and I've benefitted greatly from early versions of the know-how that the authors have packed into this book. I'm confident it will be a game-changer, capitalizing on this decade's research to rewrite the essential strategies and tactics for defeating prostate cancer.

Dr. Mark Scholz, a medical oncologist, is one of the few doctors in the world who specialize in prostate cancer. In our PC survivor/warrior community he is well known for his extraordinarily insightful pioneering work with Drs. Stephen Strum and Richard Lam, and for his talent for communication with patients. The latter is fully evident throughout the pages as well as in that mind-tugging title.I realize that some have found the title bombastic, but in just a few words the title hammers home vital points: many doctors are unwisely aggressive in treating the disease, and too many consequences are unnecessary. Yet the authors persuade us that inaction is also not the answer; rather the best answer, the best treatment (or often active surveillance), is the one that fits the circumstances, especially the degree of risk! Co-author Blum adds a lively style and conveys his "everyman" journey in coping with the disease, a journey that included some key features backed by recent research, including active surveillance, hormonal therapy, color Doppler ultrasound, endo-rectal MRI with spectroscopy, and Combidex imaging.

While the book is a comprehensive guide to decision making, it is exceptionally strong in covering active surveillance, imaging and other technology to assess the cancer, and especially hormonal therapy, which the authors refer to by the somewhat awkward phrase "Testosterone Inactivating Pharmaceuticals," or "TIP". To me, Dr. Scholz is one of the few leading experts in the world on TIP.(My sole therapy has been intermittent triple hormonal blockade.) The chapters on TIP side effects and effective countermeasures, and sections debunking myths, will be especially helpful to many patients with challenging cases. The book is also modular: many of us will want to read straight through, but the chapters stand alone for those with focused interests.

This new "classic" is in a class with "A Primer on Prostate Cancer", and "Beating Prostate Cancer: Hormonal Therapy & Diet."All three belong in the library of the prostate cancer patient, but "Invasion" will be especially useful for men who have not yet been diagnosed and their loved ones. I wholeheartedly recommend it!

4-0 out of 5 stars read this to help ask questions of your doc
this is a good book and because it runs slightly counter to the surgical model it will give you the knowledge necessary to formulate questions for your doc.... a must read if surgery is recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars straight and valueable information re:prostate health
Excellent, helpful information. Purchased because I heard an interview with the author on NPR - well worth reading for honest, reassuring information that helps you to be a full partner in making health decisions with your doctor.

3-0 out of 5 stars honestly, my friend had already made up his mind
I ordered this book to read for myself, and to share with my some very good friends of mine .... a couple, where the man has recently been diagnosed with stage one prostate cancer. I thought this book would be especially helpful to him, because he is so early in the progression of the cancerous cells, and his doctor reassured him that they are slow-growing. He'd already had the biopsy, though, and the doctor's recommendation was to either have the radiation with the "seed" implants, or to have surgery to remove the prostate. Now, it's important that I tell you, this doctor has a fine reputation, a long career, and is trusted here. He is also a personal friend of my friend, so I doubt the doc was telling him to go with these treatments just line the pockets of the medical staff. This doctor, with years of experience, and with his friend in mind, recommended surgery. So, my friend will have the surgery, and he wasn't interested in reading this book about alternative treatments and "living with" the cancer for years, slow-growing or not. He said he wants it out, and he wants to move on with his life, and that's that. He's made up his mind and he doesn't want to muddy the issue.

For people who have not already made a decision about treatment, who want to consider more options, who are afraid of the sexual side effects or the incontinence that can follow surgery, who don't want to go through radiation and suffer those side effects, this is a good book to review. It's a good book for those exploring options, reading with an open mind. A warning, though: don't get caught up in stupid conspiracy theories. The title is too inflammatory, too accusing. Read this in the way of the 12-Step Groups: "take what you want, and leave the rest." Find what is helpful or interesting to you, and ignore the rest. This is a resource, some more information and discussion on the issue, not the new gospel truth. ... Read more

Product Description
Prostate cancer is now the most common nonskin cancer among men in the United States. In 2005 alone, 250,000 new cases were diagnosed, and that number is certain to rise with each passing year. No one is more aware of this than David Ricketts, experienced cookbook author and recent prostate cancer survivor.

Shortly after surgery and radiation treatments, Ricketts began to research food and lifestyle changes that might inhibit the likelihood of prostate cancer as well as its progression. The result is this uniquely specific cookbook, which takes full advantage of foods thought to fight prostate cancer while eliminating those believed to contribute to the disease. Eat to Beat Prostate Cancer Cookbook features more than 200 delicious recipes for everything from snacks, sandwiches, and drinks to main-course dishes-all foods that will appeal to the entire family. This tremendously useful book also benefits from the author's firsthand experience, as he offers insight into what to expect regarding diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer, as well as practical advice for making the transition to healthier cooking, smarter eating, and a longer life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars no issues...
Book was receive in expected condition as agreed upon.It made a good gift. All is good.:-)

4-0 out of 5 stars Fairly good with reservations
The recipes are tasty and prep time is reasonable. The information about prostate disease in front is good although as of 2010, is 4-years behind.I choose not to eat meat or animal products for selfish reasons: I don't believe they're beneficial in any way. Therefore I'm only commenting on the meatless recipes. They're good but there's IMO an over-reliance on soy products as meat substitutes.Soy has been shown to create too many estrogen hormones, something that is not good for the prostate.Ricketts states "soy is thought to slow the growth of prostate cancer. Egg whites were okay",I disagree with both statements but to each his own.It should be understood that the cookbook was written AFTER Mr. Ricketts had a radical prostatectomy with radiation so he's unable to show any proof what affect the diet would have had on his PSA scores before having his prostate removed.

There is often talk about good fats yet a well thought out diet supplies enough fat in plant-based foods.I use water, broth or wine for a sauteing liquid.I give the book 4-stars because all of the veggie recipes can me modified to substitute alternate products for included soy products without losing the original intended taste. His seasoning is quite good.Ricketts' website provides some recipes but isn't maintained and there are dead links on it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful!
David Ricketts writes in such a manner that this book is not your ordinary cookbook. He is entertaining and gives first-hand recommendations for healthy, yet filling and delicious, eating and recipes.I found it extremely helpful in planning snacks and meals for my husband.I continue to reference it for meal planning.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just OK
What can I say, it is just OK. Alot of things if you aren't experimental on ingredients you won't use this cookbook. I would not buy again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy Everyday Recipes for a TOO Busy Person
As a aging single man still on a heavy urban work schedule who normally opted to eat out, this book truly helped me when I decided that at my age, I had a prostate cancer risk and I needed to watch my diet. The only way for me to get a handle of what I was putting in my mouth was to try to prepare more of my meals. This would be a challenge with all the work I have during the day but this book made the challenge much easier because many of the meals in the book are simple adaptations of standard dishes. I now feel so less gorged than when I ate out. In fact I have more sustained energy with balance nuitients. I don't get that low slump after eating the heavy carb and fat dishes one gets eating out. The recipe portions are reasonable and I'm certain I can avoid the late middle age spread that so many of my fellow countrymen suffer from. I can continue to easily get down the aisle and still fit into a economy middle airplane seat. My doctor and I are happy my cholesterol went down a bit, too. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Great
Did not read like a Primer to me. Nowhere near as good as Dr Walsh's book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Information is Power
This book is perhaps the best book of its genre in describing prostate cancer and the various forms of treatment for prostate cancer.

When a man is diagnosed with prostate cancer, he will be surprised to learn that there are a variety of treatment modalities. This book is excellent in that it lists all the available treatment modalities, lists the possible side-effects of each treatment, explains the diagnostic tests for prostate cancer, and writes extensively on which prostate cancers respond to which therapies the best.

The most confusing thing to a patient with prostate cancer is how to treat it.One needs to understand the type of cancer they have (the staging of the cancer tumor(s), how diagnostic tests are interpreted and what they mean, and then what treatment options are best for the specific cancer one has. This is where this book excels, as it thoroughly explains the entire process and informs the reader of all the various options that are available to treat prostate cancer.

Ultimately, knowledge is power in the issue of prostate cancer, so the informed patient is able to make the best decision to treat his cancer. This book will help you choose the best treatment. There are real and potentially serious life-altering side-effects to cancer therapy. One needs to know these adverse outcomes before making an informed decsion on treatment.I highly recommend this book as it does empower the man with prostate cancer to make these important decisons. After reading this book, you will have a sound knowledge of prostate cancer and the options for treatment. It is very reader-friendly and all medical terms and tests are explained in a manner that can be understood. It is required reading for anyone with prostate cancer.

Highly recommended.

A Primer on Prostate Cancer: The Empowered Patient's Guide, 2nd Ed.
Stephen B. Strum, M.D. and Donna Pogliano
Hollywood, FL: Life Extension Foundation, 2005, 124 pp.
Ranked in the Top Ten of my Cancer Bibliography.
Ranked in the Top Five of my Prostate Cancer Bibliography.

I have surveyed or read so far over 100 cancer books in researching my own book. This ranked in the top 10% in both my categories primarily because of the excellence of its useful and professional content and presentation and the sophisticated level of the discussion. After my prostate cancer diagnosis, quickly learning I would not get enough time with my doctor, I dug deeply into many libraries and web sites. Public libraries are helpful, but severely incomplete and rarely up to date. With a background of two college degrees and Managing Director of a large research corporation, I knew how to do research and began to seek deeper information sources and understanding on cancer and medical websites. Here, also, there are problems: insufficient depth, too general, uncertain or dated reliability, suspect motives and dispersed value in millions of locations. Studies have shown that patients have a lot of trouble finding good material on the web, trying to find diamonds in the rubble. Then, I turned to Amazon and began to build my own library of the best available. This solved my problem.

Dr. Strum is a specialist in prostate cancer. This book is condensed and loaded on almost every page with color diagrams, charts, tables, photos, scans, Physician Notes and medical writing and details I would expect in a med school text. With my previous preparation, I was able to understand and apply almost all of it to my own situation, a great leap forward for a non-scientist. Not every prostate cancer patient will be ready for this, but buy it, refer to it as you do your homework elsewhere and your disease progresses, and it will soon become the core of your understanding and view of your future.

Along with the beautiful, colorful and clear presentations, I loved the several examples that were identical to my own journey, followed by the explanation of choices and exact treatment I have had: what a relief to study, decide and then get the same confirmation from my own doctors as we moved through several stages of diagnosis and treatment; what a thrill to study a photo of a problematic bone scan and compare it to my own favorable, cancer-free scan following treatment.

Your doctors are, of course, the final and up-to-date authority: be well-informed, so you can participate in the decision-making with the experts; but recognize that the busy medical community may not have the time or detailed knowledge of your situation to give it the attention you can. As you go, you will find a number of excellent books like this to guide you. It is important to have current information about the fast-moving science of medicine. That makes it a lot easier to get past the basics, ask good questions and accept or refine the doctor's judgment and recommendations. Seek out and devour books like this one, and you will be miles, perhaps even some time, ahead of most patients. With that confidence, your improved mental attitude will assist in your progress.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just for PC
Rabbi Weinsberg has provided such useful information in this book, that I recommend it even if the health challenge being faced is something other than prostate cancer. The natural health suggestions he makes, the relaxation techniques he describes, are useful for everyone, especially someone about to undergo surgery. Most of all, as a sex educator and couples' coach, I applaud and appreciate his open discussion of the sexual experiences and struggles that accompanied his journey to wellness. He and his wife, in their admirable desire to help others, courageously reveal what normally stays hidden behind closed doors. In so doing, they encourage readers to more comfortably relate to their own sexual situation and to explore ways to improve it.

This book is a must read for any guy diagnosed with early stage prostate cancer.I received it as a gift and ended up e-mailing Rabbi Ed to thank him for writing it.I received the book after having made my treatment decision to undergo laparoscopic robotic prostatectomy.I still had serious doubts and worries about the surgery and more so about its aftermath. The book is most informative and really put me at ease with my decision.

Early stage prostate cancer is unique in that the patient generally must decide upon the method of treatment. This was a decision I struggled with for weeks. If I had read the book at that time I believe the selection process would have been much less difficult. If you have been recently diagnosed I wish you well and implore you to read this book.I plan to tell my urologist to recommend it to future patients

Product Description
The niche bestseller "Surviving Prostate Cancer Without Surgery" begins with the shooting of a urologist and includes a World War II Battle. The book exposes the big lie about radical prostate surgery, is filled with cartoons and simple diagrams, and is written for the average layperson in easy-to-understand style. "Surviving Prostate Cancer Without Surgery" quotes Dr. Gary Onik, M.D., Cryosurgeon and Director of Surgical Imaging at Celebration Health Hospital, Celebration, Florida, who says: "I expect that within five years we will see the death of the radical prostatectomy as a treatment for prostate cancer." The author, Bradley Hennenfent, M.D., has seen five uncles suffer from prostate cancer and his book includes many uplifting stories about less harmful treatments than surgery. Dr. Hennenfent also explains the problem of lies, damn lies, and prostate cancer statistics. The adverse effects of surgery: impotence, sexual dysfunction, incontinence, and urethral strictures are explained in realistic fashion. "Surviving Prostate Cancer Without Surgery" quotes oncologist Dr. Robert Leibowitz of Compassionate Oncology Medical Group, who says: "If radical prostatectomies worked, the data would be there. The reason the data is not there is because radical prostatectomies don't work." Dr. Leibowitz adds: "No prospective randomized trial has ever found radical prostatectomy to be both necessary and effective." Urologist W. Reid Pitts, Jr., M.D., FACS, wrote an outstanding letter-to-the-editor of the "Journal of Urology" lambasting the radical prostatectomy. When interviewed for "Surviving Prostate Cancer Without Surgery," Dr. Pitts said: "Although I did the first ever nerve sparing radical prostatectomy at New York-Cornell Hospital, I've abandoned the radical prostatectomy for my prostate cancer patients. There is always a better treatment option." Dr. Hennenfent co-founded the Prostatitis Foundation (www.prostatitis.org). He also founded the Epididymitis Foundation (www.epididymitisfoundation.org), and the Acoustic Neuroma Foundation (www.acousticneuromafoundation.org). He previously published "The Prostatitis Syndromes." "Surviving Prostate Cancer Without Surgery" quotes urologist Ronald Wheeler, M.D. of the Prostatitis and Prostate Cancer Center, who says: "In my opinion, prostatitis resolution holds the key to the future of prostate cancer resolution." “Two randomized, controlled studies suggest that 95% or more of all prostate cancer surgery done to date, has failed to extend the life of the patient,” says Dr. Bradley Hennenfent M.D., the book’s author. “Surgery should no longer be presented or advertised as a cure-all for prostate cancer,” says Dr. Hennenfent. “My book is all about the options to harmful surgery. “Surviving Prostate Cancer Without Surgery,” details the harm done by surgery, while explaining the pros and cons of watchful waiting, active noninvasive therapy, radiation seed implants, three-dimensional radiation therapy, herbal medications, cryosurgery, and hormone blockade. "Surviving Prostate Cancer Without Surgery" quotes Dr. Gary Onik, M.D., Cryosurgeon and Director of Surgical Imaging at Celebration Health Hospital, Celebration, Florida, who says: "I expect that within five years we will see the death of the radical prostatectomy as a treatment for prostate cancer."

Well, it is now 2010, the five years are up and surgery remains the gold standard. I do not get the feeling the author really knows what he's talking about. Treatment depends on many factors (e.g. Gleason, stage, PSA, patient's age etc.). Surgery often is the best option.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of Prostrate Cancer
If you are a man...Read this book. As a prostrate cancer patient, I found this book a very complete and informative overview of all the treatments and conditions men face with this disease. I learned things that neither of my two doctors (a radiation oncologist and a urologist)told me. This is the best overview of prostate cancer conditions to date. The information can guide you to a better life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This book presents the kind of information you might never otherwise learn and that some actually seek to suppress (note the couple of negative reviews unabashedly trying to steer you away from reading this book, with weak ad hominem attacks).I bought numerous copies of this book and gave them as gifts to friends and family coping with prostate cancer.Dr. Hennefent truly cares about the situation because he had so many loved ones (uncles) suffer from poor treatment decisions for prostate cancer and doesn't want to see others suffer. The information presented is well supported with references to reputable information sources.Prostate cancer victims need to educate themselves and not rely on biased doctors, or any other single source of information, to give them the full picture. This book will help round out whatever other information you may have received and presents much information that is quite surprising.

Product Description

When Dr. E. Fuller Torrey was diagnosed with prostate cancer, none of the books he could find was current enough or comprehensive enough to satisfy his need for information. This book is for the hundreds of thousands of other men who each year receive the same frightening diagnosis. It is the book Dr. Torrey wished he had when he was facing the countless questions that a man with prostate cancer, and his family and friends, all confront.

Complete, up-to-date, and readable, the book explains how to come to terms with the diagnosis of prostate cancer, evaluate the severity of the disease, and assess the variety of treatment options and their complications. Many chapters provide information other books barely consider, such as a full discussion of the causes of prostate cancer and an evaluation of other books on the subject. Also included is a summary of the most useful Web sites.

The author mixes his personal experience with factual material, and he maintains a reassuring sense of humor. His advice is practical, with dozens of tips and lists including “Ten Steps to Sanity for Men Recently Diagnosed with Prostate Cancer.” With Dr. Torrey’s book in hand, readers can now tackle all the important decisions about prostate cancer, confident in having the most accurate and complete information available.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surviving Prostate Cancer
This is a very informative book, written by a Doctor who admits even he, as an MD, didn't understand everything that was happening when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

In addition to being a frank discussion of the author's concerns, questions and how he went about finding answers, this books helps to put the man diagnosed with such a cancer-and his spouse as well-at ease with a better understanding of what this cancer is and how to begin to understand the choices available in seeking a treatment suited to the patients own condition.

Included also are many clever cartoons which help to ease the stress of the recently diagnosed patient. After all, even though prostate cancer is one of the slowest growing cancers, and has a good survival rate, it is still CANCER and tends to frighten the patient.

I encourage the prospective buyer to add this to his bookshelf but strongly urge that he also check out additional books, such as "Dr. Peter Scardino's Prostate Book," to gain a thorough understanding of what Prostate Cancer is and how to arrive at an educated choice of the right treatment for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful when I needed it
I bought the Kindle edition of this book in the middle of the night after we were diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. It was a great "first book" in my research, and is the right amount of information for the newly diagnosed.I followed by reading Dr. Pat Walsh's book, which is more technical, and the two together made me feel like I had enough information to consider the options appropriately.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prostate Cancer Book
This is an outstanding book for anyone who worries about preventing Prostate Cancer as well as anyone who has been diagnosed with it. It is very user friendly and readable and very comprehensive in its treatment of the causes and solutions of Prostate Cancer. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars prostate cancer prevention and treatment
torrey isa good writer.Prostate cancer came upon him and this book resulted. It is balanced and hopeful. As a physician I thought it was quite accurate.
Men with prostate cancer or with first degree relatives with the disease could read this tome with benefit.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK, but there are better books
He has a nice mix of information, but seems to go out of his way not to mention the truly comprehensive sites on the Internet where one can get information [...links taken out...]You can check the bulletin board at pcainaz dot org.

This book does not hold a candle to A Primer on Prostate Cancer: The Empowered Patient's Guide, which is as far as I'm concerned the most comprehensive yet easy-to-read book out there, and useful for years as a reference, also.

This book is a good choice also, if you are like me and find it helpful to read several books on prostate cancer.I think it is a good idea, because the choices you make will affect the rest of your life. ... Read more

The book was described as in "good condition" and indeed it was a pre-used Pierce County Library copy. I would highly recommend this supplier, Thrift Books, the book was a clean copy and it was delivered very promptly within two weeks of placing the order.

I think that this is a great book for the men who have prostate cancer, so you can understand the treatments that are available and their side effects. The only drawback that I found was that it was printed in 2005; however, if it's the only copy that you can find, it's worth getting for you library, since the treatments and side effects haven't changed that much between 2005 and 2009.

5-0 out of 5 stars A vitally important addition to every community library Health/Medicine reference collection in the country
Collaborative compiled, organized and edited by the team of Doctors David G. Bostwick (Clinical Professor of Pathology, University of Virginia); E. David Crawford (Associate Director, University of Colorado Comprehensive Cancer City, Aurora, Colorado); Celestia S. Higano (Oncology Specialist, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and Associate Professor, University of Washington School of Medicine, Seattle); and Mack Roach III (Professor of Radiation Oncology and Urology, Department of Radiation Oncology, University of California, San Francisco), the American Cancer Society's Complete Guide To Prostate Cancer is a single volume compendium providing the non-specialist general reader with all of the up-to-date information available on prostate cancer. Included are the latest advances in prevention, early detection, and treatment of prostate cancer; varied prostate cancer treatments and the decision making process to determine the best one for the reader; coping with emotional stresses and potential physical side effects (including incontinence and erectile dysfunction); practical issues related to work, finance, and medical care; as well as the fundamental quality of life issues after treatment, including sexuality and relationships. With prostate cancer affecting one in six of American men, with more than a quarter of a million American men diagnosed with prostate cancer, the American Cancer Society's Complete Guide To Prostate Cancer is a vitally important addition to every community library Health/Medicine reference collection in the country.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete Guide to Prostate Cancer by Bostwick MD
This work contains some brand new evaluative factors for prostate cancer. Examples of the factors are:
- age
- hormonal profile
- race (lowest incidence in American Indians and highest
incidence in Afro-Americans
- diet
- weight problems
- occupation

The author spends some time describing the conditions precedent
for prostate cancer. The process starts with microscopic changes in the cellular lining of the prostate. Age plays a role in multiple cancers. The PSA elevation is the classic evaluative test followed by a biopsy of the prostate. There is a nerve sparing prostectomy for lower risk cancers. The high risk cancers
may require the radical retropublic prostatectomy.
This work has a fairly comprehensive description of the current
diagnostic approaches and treatments. Complementary and alternative medicinal approaches could be described for the benefit of the reading audience. Overall, the work will help patients discuss prostate issues intelligently.

1-0 out of 5 stars american cancer society's complete guide to prostate cance
This book was loaned to me from the library of Mass General Hospital. It had absolutely no information on any "alternative treatments" or anything other than the standard treatments which are mostly 40 years old and known to fail to cure prostate cancer. Numerous treatments in current literature are not even in the index. This book is at least 30 years out of date and contains no useful suggestion for anyone with a cancer that might have spread.
They appear to be suppressing information.

Prostate Cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars ABC'S of prostate cancer
Reading this book has convinced me in the positive decision that I have made concerning the cancer.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best at all and unnecessarily demoralizing in places
As the wife of a man just diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer, I found this book very disturbing because it seems to over-emphasize deaths and tragedies and not survivors in many places. For example, in the section on how prostate cancer impacts spouses and daughters, there were nine women's stories--five of whom had their men die of prostate cancer, two of whom had upsetting stories about advanced prostate cancer, and only two with men who had had locally confined prostate cancer and seemed to do alright.Since 13 percent of all men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and only 2-3 percent of all men die from it, this seemed to be a VERY VERY unbalanced treatment.

More than 80 percent of men who are diagnosed with prostate cancer DO NOT DIE FROM it according to my reading--but in this book more than half of the examples of the men in the women's lives did die! I was looking for people who had gone through what I can expect to go through and instead read A LOT about a minority who suffered horribly ("The last five years have been a whirlwind of anger, fear, uncertainty, indifference, anxiety and depression" from one."My future was wiped out . . . Loss of income, lonliness, no companion, no best friend, no lover. Long, lonely evenings, days, weekends. . .Widow"as the CONCLUDING words of another.) This was not helpful to me.And the acocunts from survivors were not in-depth enough on the whole, though I did really like seeing all their names and faces--that in itself was reassuring. But there was only a scant paragraph from Bob Dole, for example.

The book is graphically VERY well done but not as informative overall as the prostate cancer books by either Dr. Walsh of Johns Hopkins or Dr. Loo or Cornell. Both of those gave me more facts, understanding and a more realistic understanding. The ABC's of Prostate Cancer seems designed to have people take prostate cancer seriously and get tested--which I'm all for. It is not the best book for those with early disease to read or even more advanced disease in my opinion since the in-depth profiles are not representative of the frequency and ditribution of prostate survivors. There is also not enough on diet and new treatments.

5-0 out of 5 stars The finest book in its class
The ABCs of Prostate Cancer is simply the finest book in its class. It elegantly and cleanly takes the most difficult concepts and clearly and simply lays them out. The use of graphic is the best I've encountered in apopular medicine book. Dr. Oesterling's devotion to his own father, who hadprostate cancer, is remarkable. This gives any prostate cancer patient asharp and clear edge with the best presentation of the most up to datematerial yet. Nice Job! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wealth of knowledge from a superior physician
It is immediately obvious that this physician is a genius. This is a rarity in the medical field based upon my many years of experience. The book conatains a wealth of knowledge covering virtually all aspects of the prostate, including cancer causes, avoidance, and various treatments.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
Clearly the book to read for anyone facing the possibility of prostate cancer.Be sure to get the latest volume (revised in '07)--not always obvious in the on-line description.

2-0 out of 5 stars out of date
though the best of its time, this book was copyrighted in 2001 and written in 2000.10 years of research results are in since. This new reseach, on methods just started when the book was written is much more favorable toward radiation treatment than it was using the major approach when the book was written.

Readers be advised to seek more recent writings and check online for reports coming out even in the last three months.

Be advised that recently published on kindle does not mean recently written or published in print.I made that mistake.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Patrick Walsh's guide to surviving prostate cancer
