Product Description
Men treated for localized prostate cancer have an excellent medical prognosis, but may have difficulty readjusting to life after surgery as a result of treatment related side effects. Changes in physical functioning and ongoing PSA monitoring due to the possibility of recurrence may bring added stress. Effective stress management is a key factor in increasing quality of life in this population and may play a role in maintaining overall health.

Cognitive Behavioral Stress Management (CBSM) and relaxation training constitute the two components of this comprehensive program. Each session provides participants with stress management skills, including cognitive restructuring, coping strategies, and social support. Participants practice a variety of relaxation methods, such as progressive muscle relaxation, imagery, and meditation.Relevant issues for men having had prostate cancer, such as sexuality and communication, are also addressed.

This guide is designed to be used in conjunction with the corresponding workbook, which includes in-session exercises, monitoring forms, and homework assignments.Group meetings combined with home practice facilitate the application of effective stress management and relaxation techniques to the everyday lives of participants.Together, the guide and workbook include all the material and information needed to successfully implement this program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good information; interesting presentation.
This book was recommended by a friend who, like my husband, was also diagnosed with prostate cancer. Both of them really appreciated the information and the author's delivery. My husband feels that he gained a better understanding of the disease without being overwhelmed with lots of difficult to understand medical jargon.Reading the book also opened avenues of discussion for the pros and cons of different treatment options with his doctor.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information
When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer I bought several books. The two most useful books were this one and Patrick Walsh's book 'Guide to Surviving PC'.The value in McHugh's book is that he had the advantage of being not only a urologist, but also a prostate cancer patient.Walsh's book is like the Bible for prostate cancer information. It's big and full of useful information.'The Decision' is a complimentary book to Walsh's.
Good luck with whatever procedure to you decide on.I choose surgery, and part of my decision was based on what I had learned from McHugh's book.If you're buying this book you are probably in a quandary as to what procedure to opt for. This book with be a big help in making that decision.Again all the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prostate Dancer
This book is very helpful in learning about prostate cancer.
Dr. McHugh has been a patient of this disease himself and knows the fears and anxieties of learing about one's own cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Decision" provides empowerment to men (and their wives)!!
First let me state that I have not been diagnosed with prostate cancer, yet!Over the last 15 years, since I was 50, I have experienced a roller coaster of PSA levels. The low numbers were still near or above 4 and the highs were above 8!These ups and downs have caused many hours of anxiety for me and my wife.During this emotional ride, I have had 4 prostate biopsies, all were negative!!My last PSA was high again and we are back to the anxiety and deciding on waiting until my next appointment in 6 months or having another biopsy just to be sure??Then during a routine visit with my primary care doctor I brought him up-to-date on my prostate adventure. He told me about Dr. McHugh's book about his own experience with prostate cancer. He suggested I read the book even though I had not been diagnosed with prostate cancer.I had read one other book on the subject sometime ago and thought it might be a good idea to read something new on the subject.

When I received the book and started reading, I could not put it down.It was such an easy read that it took me just 2 days to finish it!I was generally familiar with most of terms and topics from my own personnel experiences, but Dr. McHugh covered each step with just enough detail and in plain English that provides the reader with all the information and guidance necessary to make "The Decision"!

Fortunately, I don't have to make that decision, not yet anyway, but it did provide me withpeace-of-mind that if and when that time ever comes I will be able to make "The Decision" without any hesitation. The book provided me with all the information needed to feel empowered no matter what the outcome!

Dr. McHugh's humor, that he so eloquently disperses through-out the book, provided not only entertainment, but also relieved a lot of my current anxiety about my decision to undergo another biopsy. I would highly recommend this book to any man (and his wife) that has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, but also has some anxiety about high PSA levels.Thank you Dr. McHugh!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Been There, Had That!
My major life decision in October 2003 could have been made with better logic and less stress had this book, "The Decision," been available at the time. That was when my biopsy report confirmed I had prostate cancer.

Now having read Dr. McHugh's book and taking a retro-perspective of my treatment strategies, I am more confident than ever that my decision was consistent with both my wife's and my personal objectives for treatment outcomes. It is comforting to see that "The Decision" includes the wife's issues and concerns. After all this important decision has significant implications for both.

Dr. McHugh takes the reader on a journey though a difficult physiological and psychological health issue, with a writing style that offers ease of understanding, a clear exploration of treatment options and meaningful risk/reward analyses. All the pertinent anatomical data is there, along with rather humorous anecdotes relating to his personal experiences with management of the disease.

I consider this book a "must read" for any man who is faced with "what do I do now?" after being informed "You have prostate cancer.""The Decision" will provide a pathway that leads you to a fully informed status.

And Yes!The book is a real "page turner." ... Read more

Product Description
Around 32,000 men in the UK are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year. It differs from most other cancers in the body, in that small areas of cancer within the prostate are very common and may not grow or cause any problems for many years. It is often it is diagnosed during a routine checkup so most men that are diagnosed often have no warning signs.

About one in three men over the age of 50 have some cancer cells within their prostate and nearly all men over the age of 80 have a small area of prostate cancer. It may cause pain, difficulty in urinating, erectile dysfunction and other symptoms, but early prostate cancer usually causes no symptoms.

Since the first edition of this book was published in 2003, there have been several groundbreaking studies completed that have changed the way that certain categories of the disease are treated. This new edition of the book includes sections on radiotherapy, which is now known to be an effective treatment for men with residual prostate cancer after surgery, and a heavily updated chapter on Advanced Disease. ... Product Description
Sometimes a woman just needs to hear certain things from another woman. And one of those times is when your husband may have prostate cancer.

When author Lynne Rosenberg, a registered nurse and wife of a medical doctor, began to research this disease after her husband Mark was diagnosed, she found very little useful information about the day-to-day decisions and difficulties they would face. Scrambling to decipher test results, procedures, medications, and side effects, she discovered that each woman faces this process as if facing uncharted territory.

Prostate cancer involves the physical and mental mechanisms that in some ways define both masculinity and intimacy, and Rosenberg confronts these subjects with refreshing frankness. After devoting more than a year to her husband’s illness, treatment, and recovery, she has organized her experience into a readable and rational discussion that can help prepare women to deal with everything for which she herself had no preparation.

While not intended to replace the doctor, nurse, or counselor in the management of this disease, A Crash Course on Prostate Cancer: From One Woman’s Perspective will provide you with the support that only another woman can give.

5-0 out of 5 stars prostate health in 90 days
This is a great book, very informative. It gives true alternatives to conventional medicine on this subject..I highly recommend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nutritional information is good
The book has good nutritional information in it.I do not approve of the rabid defamation of the medical community. He wastes words and my time trying to defame the current system. My brief research proves that there is a great deal of research being done by astute medical institutions. He could cut all that out and get to the point.

5-0 out of 5 stars good info
Another great book that explains all the alternatives and causes of prostate problems. Please read this if you need to.

4-0 out of 5 stars Read This Book if You're a Man over 50
If you're a man over 50, or if you have any symptoms of prostate problems - getting up too often at night to urinate, frequent urination, etc. - I advise you get this book.

The author begins by explaining how he developed the protocols he espouses, which was through trial and error after he developed prostate problems.

By far the most helpful - and easiest to implement - advice is in the first part of the book.Essentially, this is a body cleanse to rid the body of parasites. It consists of abstaining from solid food for eight days.In place of solid food you drink a nutritious blend of fresh lemon juice, organic maple syrup and cayenne pepper. You also add some supplements to this throughout the eight day "fast."

In essence, this alkalizes the body, making it inhospitable to harmful microorganisms, which is the first step of his program.

Some of his subsequent recommendations are harder to follow, but they're definitely worth trying if at all possible.

I followed all of his early chapter recommendations and found my own symptoms of an enlarged prostate diminish considerably as a result.

Definitely a great book for men concerned about their prostate health!

5-0 out of 5 stars Larry's death
To the person who believes that Larry's regimen does not work if Larry died of prostate cancer: While those of us who consulted with or even met Larry in person wish that those closest to him would reveal the cause of his death, we do not think his regimen is a failure if he DID die of prostate cancer. After all, he kept himself in robust health for a very long time, in contrast to lots of men who perhaps prematurely had surgery. Furthermore, he was in his LATE 70s! He had 17 great years after his diagnosis!

Notice that whenever you ask a guy how he is doing after surgery, he'll say he's fine. Probe deeper, though, and he will reveal he is not fine. Unless the cancer is aggressive, there's no need to run into the operating room. The two biggest lessons in the book are: 1. Detoxify a few times per year, and 2. Use power doppler ultrasound as your monitoring method, not a biopsy. Dr. Robert Bard in NYC is the man to go to, and your insurance will probably cover it. Blue Cross Federal Plan, for example, covers it.

P.S. Great new lab test with fewer false positives than PSA may even be out right now--the EPCA-2 by Onconome Inc. Google Direct Labs--you may be able to get it done without a doctor's involvement, even.

Best wishes to all you men with prostate problems. It takes guts and energy to look at non-surgical options. Do what you can!

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Overview of the Topic
This text is one of a series focused on early diagnosis and treatment. This is not a definitive book on prostate cancer, it does not contain the details one would see inDeVita et al. Yet it covers in detail every aspect of the disease with a true focus on dealing with those cases where early detection has been achieved.

Chapter 1 is a good overview regarding the markers; PSA, PSA velocity, age factors and the like. The recent debate regarding the PSA stats in NEJM for example is refocused by reading their Chapter 1. Lowering PSA for younger men and focusing on velocity and free % numbers assists in the initial steps.

Chapter 2 is focused on the biopsy and staging issues. It is wonderfully presented in that it provides details and graphic materials that set the current practice in the collection and processing of the samples. One will not walk away becoming expert on Gleason scoring yet one can be brought up to date quickly. For the general practice physician the material will greatly assist in informing their patients and for the educated patient facing the problem of a diagnosis it prepares them for what to expect. The fear of the unknown on the part of the patient is often the most unsettling. This book can and the authors stats as such be used by well educated patients and hopefully avoid the many false rumors that seem to spread.

Chapter 3 is histology and the details on Gleason. This is clearly helpful for the general practitioner in working with their patient. It is one of the best discussions of Gleason scoring that I have seen. The pictures are all spot on and well discussed and they are all in color as one would seem them in a good path report.

Chapter 4 deals with the watchful waiting issue. This is the chapter on what will happen statistically if one does nothing. The problem of course is that every patient is different and there is no way to determine outcome if one just waits. Prostate cancer is one of those difficult cancers wherein 80-90% of the patients may very well never die or have any significant morbidity from the disease and yet the remaining may die in a very short period of time. This is a genetic problem, understanding what pathways are activated or not. To data there are no adequate tests to determine that subgroup.

Chapters 5 thru 7 describe the surgical procedures. These are also superbly presented. They detail the procedures, then they carefully go through the risks and success of each. The detailing of the morbidities are critical since the patient must be made aware of them in the selection process. Ultimately it is the patient's decision. Yet, that decision may be de facto made depending on the physician that he goes to. Yet educating the family physician as well as the patient is essential.

Chapter 8 deals with the various radiation modalities. Again the text provides a superb discussion of the techniques and how they are employed as well as providing details on the morbidities.

To the patient and the family physician the use of Chapters 5 thru 8 allow for a well informed method of choosing the final procedure.

Chapters 10 and 11 discuss alternatives such as cryotherapy and alternative medicine. Finally Chapter 12 goes over the many controversies. For the patient and the family physician this is a useful chapter since there is a wealth of information floating around that may not always have any foundation in truth.

All in all this is a fantastic contribution to the field. For the educated it is read in just a few hours, skipping what may be well known but seeing how the author has pulled together all of the pieces. It is worth a place in many a library. In addtion the on line data is quite useful as well. ... Read more

Product Description

Androgens are critical regulators of prostate differentiation and function, as well as prostate cancer growth and survival. Therefore, androgen ablation is the preferred systemic treatment for disseminated prostate cancer. Androgen action is exerted in target tissues via binding the androgen receptor (AR), a nuclear receptor transcription factor.

Historically, the gene expression program mediated by the AR has been poorly understood. However, recent gene expression profiling and more traditional single-gene characterization studies have revealed many androgen-regulated genes that are important mediators of androgen action in both normal and malignant prostate tissue. This book will focus on the androgen-regulated gene expression program, and examine how recently identified androgen-regulated genes are likely to contribute to the development and progression of prostate cancer. Recent studies that have attempted to unravel how these genes are deregulated in androgen depletion independent prostate cancer will be included

5-0 out of 5 stars What A Treat
I have found Journey Toward Wholeness very rewarding. I am truly impressed with Dr. Stegall's candor about such an intimate event and processes--probably the clearest and most honest I have read about anything so personal as this. I cried at times and laughed a lot, plus finding myself both educated and empathizing. Also, he writes well along with his honesty. I can learn much from him.
Bruce Evans

5-0 out of 5 stars Stalking the Wild PSA
After losing a close friend to prostate cancer and witnessing a cousin's battle with the disease, I tackled this book hoping that it would give me some notion of my odds of avoiding or at least surviving the disease. It did not disappoint.

Stegall's book gives a clear picture of prostate cancer from a patient's point of view. Much to my surprise, I laughed out loud over the author's struggles with spells of diarrhea, incontinence, depression and impotence, and I empathized with his emotional and spiritual roller coaster rides. Once worried by my own temporary PSA result of 14, I found that the author's PSA had hit an astronomical 528 and he has survived.

By literally baring his body and soul to the reader, Stegall provides a graphic, understandable guide to medical procedures that prostate cancer patients face. More importantly, by speaking candidly about his own dark night of the soul (and the parallel struggles of his wife and children), Stegall prepares the reader for war with a deadly, heartless, and frightening enemy and a world that seldom appreciates the depth of a patient's dilemma.

After reading this book, I am much better prepared for what (my family history says) probably awaits me. With humor and verve, Stegall lifts the veil that has cloaked the disease. The book is chock full of helpful hints and references that any prostate disease patient would need. Some great advice for living comes as a bonus.

Despite my fear of cancer, the book uplifted me. Perhaps that's because I share the author's interest in religion, music and education. More likely, it is because as a professional story teller, Stegall was well prepared to relate the tale of his battles.

If you are a male, you should read this book. If you know a male, the same advice applies. I'm going to buy copies for my physicians's waiting room and for our church and public library. I'm sure that others will gain as much from the book as I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wallner's book
This is by far the best book on prostate cancer for patients, along with Kent Wallner's book for physician's "Prostate Brachytherapy Made Complicated".Kent has an amazing way of presenting very complicated, scientific material in a straight forward, easy to understand way.I personaly give all my patients a copy of Kent's book to help them understand their disease process, and treatment options.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Helpful Book With Some Weaknesses
It is important to realize that the author is a radiation oncologist who is writing with a biased point of view. He does manage, however, to give the reader a fairly balanced overview in spite of his background and training.

Wallner makes an attempt to write a thorough review of the subject in a readable style. The weakest part of the book is the coverage given to the side effects of radiation treatment. Wallner clearly understates this important consequence. Another shortfall is that not enough space is given to a comparison of the disease-free suvival statistics between surgery and radiation. Anyone considering treatment needs to know the disease-free survival records of patients with different stages of disease under all of the major treatment options.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Prostate Cancer Alternative Treatments
I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in January of 1999.After the shock, I started doing research on the web to educate myself.I also went to our public library and read or scanned every book on the shelf about ProstateCancer. This book is without doubt the best of all the books on theoptions for treatment for Prostate Cancer that I read.Clear and concise, written for the lay person with just enough technical jargon so that youcan discuss PCa with a physician. The book explains PSA results, GleasonScores and the Partin Tables that every man needs to know about to make anintelligent choice for treatment.

Don't let the comment about largeprint influence you one way or the other, it doesn't matter. If you wantinformation, this is the book to read.I read it all in one long evening. 5 STARS! ... Read more

Product Description
What foods should you eat if you want to keep your prostate healthy? How does sexual activity affect the health of your prostate? What are ways you can prevent prostate cancer? What should African-American men know about prostate cancer? What are the best alternatives to radiation and surgery in treating prostate cancer? What are the symptoms of an unhealthy prostate?

These are some of the many important questions that are answered by Dr. Daniel W. Nixon, one of America's premier cancer research institute leaders, and Dr. Max Gomez, the charismatic health commentator whose reports are aired on NBC television stations nationwide. The authors not only provide indispensable guidance in cancer prevention but also offer a dynamic, new noninvasive treatment of prostate cancer. Packed with information, The Prostate Health Program explains in clear, simple language the link between obesity and prostate cancer, the difference between an enlarged prostate and a diseased one, the causes of frequent urination and pain, and the specific prostate problems pertaining to gay men.

Drs. Nixon and Gomez offer a user-friendly plan of diet, exercise, and behavioral change that men can easily incorporate into their lives. The authors explain why aggressive treatment, such as radiation and surgery, is often unnecessary, less effective, and more dangerous -- often leaving men incontinent and impotent -- than other treatments.

The cornerstones of this unique program are the Prostate Health Pyramid and the Transition Diet, both of which were created specifically for this book and are the ultimate tools in prostate cancer prevention, control, and treatment. First, the foods that protect the health of the prostate are identified; then, food changes are introduced slowly for more effective and long-lasting reform of eating habits. Best of all, quick and easy recipes created by chefs at the Culinary Institute of America provide a menu that is healthy and delicious.

With its combination of cutting-edge research and highly respected, world-renowned authors, The Prostate Health Program is the definitive defense against a deadly disease. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "When you've got your health you've got just about everything".
You know you are getting older when your friends greet you by saying "How are you doin?', How's your prostate?" Drs. Nixon and Gomez believe it is time for men to get serious about paying attention to their prostate glands.

In this book you will get the critical information that can help you help guard your health. This is first and foremost the best "preventive" medical book out on this subject.

Diet, that hideous four letter word, is front and center in preventing prostate problems (including cancer).Yes, it is about eating good foods that will protect your health. You will learn how to do a `drive by' fingering (middle index) to the fat-laden, concentrated fast food joints. The doctors first give you reasons why you need to change your eating, (Duh.You're going to die a painful death if you don't) and then they pile on the menus and recipes that you can try.

This book promotes a "take charge" of your life message and then gives you a step by step, systematic guide. To quote the doctors, "The vast majority of cancer doesn't just happen, we do it to ourselves."

This informative guide is extremely well written and easy to understand. The sections on understanding your prostate and the prostate check are worth the price of the book alone. The chapter on prostate cancer and treatments are very good.If you have prostate cancer then this book, along with "Dr. Peter Scardiono's Prostate Book", will help you through this difficult time.Get them both.Highly Recommended,

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book of Empowerment
Beating Prostate Cancer (Hormonal Therapy & Diet, 1)

"The Book Beating Prostate Cancer" by Dr. Charles Snuffy Myers" is a must read for all prostate cancer patients as well as though who wish to avoid the disease. My husband is fortunate enough to be a patient of Dr. Myers but for those who are not, this is a book of knowledge and personal empowerment. Dr. Myers is an internationally renowned oncologist and clinical researcher whose own battle with prostate cancer is a living testimony of his teachings and convictions. His writing is indicative of his bed side manner: gentle, warm, caring, uncomplicated and engaging.

An initial diagnosis of cancer or a recurrence is frightening enough for any patient and their loved ones. If the patient and their spouse or advocate are vigilant in seeking opinions and knowledge, they will confront complex testing procedures, confusing terminology, and will be prescribed only conventional treatment options. Our collective experience has been that physicians are often siloed by their discipline and their opinions are at time biased and "singular" in an approach to the disease. The radiologist, or surgeon or medical oncologist, although experts, do not provide a consolidated analysis or a multidisciplinary treatment approach. It is difficult for the patient to gain perspective and to conclude what the proper decision may be for their treatment.

Dr. Myers is a "treatment architect" and his representation of all the disciplines, in concert with disease stages and prognosis are clearly presented in an uncomplicated and concise manner. It is very similar to his in-person style and delivery. He simplifies the text for thelayman, while encouraging and empowering his patients to maintain a state of health and possible remission. Heteaches and advocates the "mediterranean diet" and makes recommendations to ingest vitamin supplements and antioxidants. He utilizes both conventional treatments in concert with alternative treatments, all which are predicated on on-going medical research. Succinctly, by choosing a healthy life style patients can keep the immune system strong and create a body chemistry that literally starves cancer cells.

This quick reading book should be kept bedside or close at hand to garner the day to day encouragement so often needed and for easy accessibily to guidance and knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review: Beating Prostate Cancer (Hormonal Therapy & Diet) by MD Charles "Snuffy" Myers
As an 8 year survivor I had the good fortune to be treated to one of Dr. Myers lectures at the time my initial radiation therapy failed. This lead to seeking his assistance on my case resulting in his supervising my triple blockade hormone therapy.

His new book is an excellent representation of his skill in the medical oncology field and highlights his ability to communicate in lay terms, the logic behind hormone therapy. He goes beyond "pills" and helps build a lifestyle of diet and exercise to make survival worthwhile. His advise is especially meaningful as he is also a survivor and fully appreciates what the patient is experiencing

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Valuable Reading for Living with My Prostate Cancer
Dr. Charles "Snuffy" Myers has once again made an enormous contribution to those of us living with prostate cancer. What I appreciate the most about this book is his very thorough descriptions of all aspects of hormone therapy. He understands and is able to communicate effectively that cancer is a systemic disease and provides speicific information about how life style and diet are just as critical as medical treatment. He carefully follows the research and studies related to prostate cancer, including the nutritional research, and digests this information for the lay reader. This book has been most helpful to me as I continue my fifteen year journey of understanding and living with my prostate cancer. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars just OK
What can I say, it is just OK. Alot of things if you aren't experimental on ingredients you won't use this cookbook. I would not buy again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Ideas
Having been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer and had surgery, I have found this book to contain some exciting and good recipes to support healthy eating as part of the treatment of this disease. The recipes are very tasty plus nutritious. The only hang-up is that I live in a rural town where some of the foods and ingredients used in the recipes are hard to find, so I have to drive some distance to get them. That's some hassal, but the benefits are very worth while.

1-0 out of 5 stars Why I decided against this book
Background: my PSA has doubled in 6 months, but is still under 4.0.I am putting off a 2nd biopsy until I have given dietary changes a chance to kick in.

{The cover of the book has a picture of tomatoes.I believe Lycopene to be over-hyped at present, since there are no studies that show supplementation lowering PSA levels.}

Mr. Guler's comments worried me.The meat issue is really a fat issue (I wonder if the surge in Atkins adherents will lead to a surge in prostate cancer). The fat issue, as I understand it, is (a) the quantity of fat and (b) an imbalance between omega-3 & omega-6 fats.

Im told that grass-fed beef is lower in fat & has a one-to-one ratio, whereas corn-fattened beef has very little omega-3.So beef isn't entirely out of the question.

Fish can be a problem.Farmed salmon is high in fat, but because of the feed, it contains little or no omega-3.

My new diet has more fish (not farmed) than meat.Complex carbs.Vegetables such as broccoli & peppers, but not potatoes. No dessert. No dairy.Zone diet portions.Any general purpose cookbook will provide sufficient recipes.

2-0 out of 5 stars What is left out.
The book opens with information regarding foods to be avoided that feed prostate cancer along with a endorsement by a medical doctor. The book does not define what is "meat" which is a food that the book states should be avoided. It also avoids the categories of seafood and moderate alcohol use such as wine with dinner.I wrote the co-authors requesting a clarification of the above items.Since they refused to answer my inquiry, I consider the book just another vegetarian cookbook with a misleading or incomplete title.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hope And A Fun Approach To Food Preparation
It makes sense that a proper diet can have an impact on the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer. I have some doubt, however, about the ability of certain foods to destroy prostate cancer cells as claimed on the dust jacket. Fighting prostate cancer is a grim business and this book will help PC survivors and their loving spouses because it provides hope and a fun approach to food preparation. I am presently using the book more for its ideas and inspiration instead oftrying to precisely follow each recipe. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Prostate Cancer
This is a 'must read' for anyone interested in prostate cancer, especially those contemplating surgery.Horan makes the argument that, once detected, prostate cancer cells are already outside the gland or metastatic. What matters is just how malignant a particular variety is.The bottom line is that one must have faith in and full discussion with one's Urologist. This book helps you to be an informed consumer participant in your health care.A bonus is his reference to medical philosophy from ancient times.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Important Book
This book is a must-read if you have been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Following its advice just might preserve your quality of life--and possibly even save your life. As Dr. Horan so eloquently illustrates, the business of prostate cancer is largely just that--a business and an industry. As The New York Times pointed out in an article recently, this is not only a business, it is big, BIG business. The industry's products range from the $25-a-pop PSA test that can add $10,000 a year in income to a doctor's practice, to the $2500 biopsy, to the $25,000 surgery and/or radiation "options," to the ultimate in prostate cancer treatment--the proton beam generator that is the size of two football fields and costs $100,000 to play. According to the Times article, prostate cancer treatment is one of the two or three things that are leading the way in driving up the cost of health care in the United States right now. Apparently it is completely out of control.

I have read a dozen or so books on prostate cancer and, with the exception of this one, most of them are selling something--one form or another of radical treatment. Celebrity urologists/surgeons/authors (with their celebrity patients) have a lot at stake in preserving the status quo. So do the big university hospitals, the pharmaceutical companies, and the labs that process all those test results. Most of these books downplay the often disastrous side effects of surgery and radiation. But even more dishonestly, what they don't tell you is that more often than not the treatments are entirely unnecessary. As my 90-year-old uncle (and retired doctor) once told me, most men will die WITH prostate but not FROM it. He's known he has prostate cancer for 25 years now and he simply watches it. Same with my 89-year-old father. Both men are still very active.

Dr. Horan, a 70-something practicing urologist in California, blows the whistle on this big business. From what I've gathered from Googling and YouTubing, he apparently became alarmed about this over-treatment several years ago and reached out to some of his colleagues in the New York City-based House of Medicine, to borrow a phrase from another excellent book, "Hippocrates' Shadow." He was ignored.

I'll leave it to other more competent reviewers to expound on the actual content of this book. All I want to say is that I read it with a highlighter--and almost every page is marked up. This is an important book. I do have a few complaints, though. While much of the book is written in easy-to-understand language, Dr. Horan frequently slips into using too many big words. I'm a reasonably well-educated person, but I often had to refer to a dictionary while reading it. It also would be helpful if the book had an index. Finally, my overall impression is that Dr. Horan (or his publisher) couldn't decide who the book's audience should be--the layperson, or all of those people in the medical establishment that he is bucking up against. Much of the book is just too darned scientific and technical for the average lay person. So if I could only give it four and a half stars, I would. But this is too important a book to only give it four stars.

One last point. Prostate cancer can indeed be serious. Tens of thousands of men die of it every year. So I don't want to make light of it. But more often than not, most of those men were diagnosed earlier in their lives--not in their 60s and 70s which is where the "epidemic" is happening today. ... Read more
