easy to read, practical
I bought this book as a required text for a school psychology ph.d. program, and thought it would be horribly dry. To my pleasant surprise, it is not only easy to read, it is a great resource, full of practical information that really gives clarity to the field. Great book!

Helpful resource
While I found this book helpful in teaching undergraduates about graduate education in psychology, I also found much of the information out-of-date. In the 8 years since the last revision of the book, much has changed in the application process.

A great resource that will answer all your questions
If you are like I was about a year and a half ago, you want to go to graduate school because it's the next logical step for a psychology major, but you don't know how to prepare yourself or what is important to have on a resume/vita. Moreover, you need a resource that has all the information you'll need in one place.

That resource is "The Complete Guide to Graduate School Admission." For every step of the process, from getting research experience to accepting an offer from a school, this book will guide you along and prevent you from making catastrophic mistakes out of inexperience. I kept this book around for a year and a half, and referred to it often. As a result, I have been accepted into my top graduate schools, and have received a generous offer of financial aid.

Anyone interested in graduate school in psychology and its related fields of study will find this book useful, but the reader will reap the full range of its benefits by first being exposed to its material as a junior or sophomore in an undergraduate program.

A good start
This is definitely a book worth looking at, especially if you are just starting to look at the grad school application process.The Q&A format makes it easy to read, and the sections on timelines, personal statements, and C.V.s were pretty helpful.

Overall, though, I found it lacking in more specific, in-depth information.The APA's Getting In: A Step-By-Step Plan for Gaining Admission to Graduate School in Psychology is a much better source, especially if you are considering many highly competitive programs.

Very Helpful
This book was a great help in telling you all the little things you need to consider when applying for graduate school.It also tells you how to go about the application process, from example letters requesting application materials, to how to write up your C. V.This book gave me the answers when no one else seemed to know and went over the niceties concerning the application process (how to decline an offer, should you visit, the importance of the appearance of your application).I know a lot of these things may appear to be insignificant, but when you're so stressed about getting in, why not do the most you can to improve your chances?You never know, and this book helped me through it.And I DID get in to my number one choice. ... Great book
Good book with the most information for the school psychology exam I have found.The cd with sample tests is very helpful.

Useful Guide!!
This book was a great visual guide in preparing for the Praxis II exam.It has 6 practice tests (though some with typos) and various graphic organizers and review quizzes for each topic covered on the exam.I would couple this book with some more detailed guides in case you need to look something up in more detail.(School Psychology [...] is a good pair).

Good study guide but...
I found the visual organizers helpful because they focus on what is important. The information seemed manageable. When I was studying I found some errors in the visual organizers on the cd (e.g. TONI & CTONI). I printed the visual organizers from the cd out so it would be easier to write my own notes. I didn't compare the cd version to the book version. I found the 6 practice tests to be disappointing. Each test was pretty much the same with a handful of new questions added. I recommend that if something doesn't look right, look into it. Don't assume that every piece of information that was gathered to create this book was reviewed. If I wasn't so overwhelmed with the amount of information to study I would have made better notes on the errors I found. The book was helpful but it was not the only resource I used to prepare for the exam. Additionally, I would also say it is not necessarily the best resource I have come across. By using a combination of resources (including participating in a study group) I passed with a score of 184.

Good Graphic Organizers, Beware of the CD....
I recently bought this book at NASP to do some cramming for the Praxis. I loved the graphic organizers- they looked just like my notes that i make when I study for tests. However, when I started using the CD i the back of the book that contains several Adobe practice tests and answer keys, I got worried. For instance, they refer to "Irvington vs. Tatro." I did a report on this case- I'm pretty sure it's IRVING vs. Tatro. Also:

25. Difference between Operant conditioning and Classical conditioning are:
a. In operant conditioning, one systematically administers a reward to produce the
desired operant behavior.
b. In classical conditioning, the "learning" is dependent upon inevitable responses that are
natural to the organism.
c. Operant responses are contrives and conditioned responses are natural.
d. All of the above.

They claim the correct answer is C....


49. Receptive language disorders results from difficulties in:
a. Hearing what others say
b. Using spoken language
c. Formulating language
d. Comprehending what others say

They list the correct answer is C. Believe it. And this is only on the first half of Practice Test #2.

This book is advertised to contain practice tests, but with typos and incorrect information throughout those tests, I question the credibility of the entire book. As an overly-stressed graduate student, the last thing I need is a misleading Praxis practice test that makes me feel like I'm taking crazy pills. In short, just get the Best Practices books.... ... This book was very helpful for me in understanding the graduate application process.My undergraduate institution does not have an advisor to help me, so I had to figure it out on my own.The book was very detailed and specific, and it explained the process and answered my questions a lot.The book also gave tips and advice for every stage of the application process.I feel like I wasted money on other books that only half-way explained things before finding this one.I strongly recommend buying this book if you are considering an advanced degree in psychology like me. ... Balanced Positive Psychology in Schools
This is an excellent book --- very thorough, comprehensive, practical, positive, and balanced.The only complaint that I have (not really) is that in reading it I kept learning new and interesting things about positive psychology and the schools,which prompted my going off on tangents and reading additional material, so it took much longer to read the book than I originally anticipated.

Positive psychology started out with the best of intentions (scientific focus on the good rather than the bad), but soon became criticized for too much emphasis on happiness and individual motivation, and for ignoring negative, collective (social), and past findings.The more recent "balanced positive psychology" attempts to rectify some of these shortcomings, and this book could easily be called "Balanced Positive Psychology in the Schools".Negative behaviors, positive social interactions, and past research are all fully considered.

After a brief introduction by the editors and a nice outline of their conceptual model of positive research, there are 34 articles by recognizable individuals in the field covering everything from promoting positive assets and positive mental health in children to promoting contextual resources (schools, family, and peers) to specific school-based applications.The impact of Bronfenbrenner's ecological model is apparent throughout the book.The applications to schools of many findings from positive psychology are thoroughly addressed (including mindfulness, flourishing, subjective well-being, hope, optimism, character strengths, gratitude, self-efficacy, self-concept, emotion regulation, flow, empathy, health and wellness, etc.). The book is loaded with general recommendations concerning improving children's lives in schools, as well as specific information about programs like the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), the Positive Parenting Program (PPP), School-Wide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS), Positive Discipline (PD), Reducing Bullying in the Urban School District Project (RBUSD), and the Resilience and Youth Development Module (RYDM).I started having acronym nightmares.I was especially interested in the treatment of mastery vs. performance goals, which appeared several places in the book, as well as the last chapter which focused on the primacy of local control of schools in the U.S.I would like to have seen a bit more on primary prevention efforts like early childhood intervention (for example, Weikart's Perry Preschool), especially in light of recent interest in 4-year-old kindergarten programs.

The Ultimate Resource
This book is, hands-down, the best preparatory instrument I have encountered over the course of planning a graduate education in psychology. Anyone planning to apply to psychology graduate programs NEEDS this book. It is far more than just a checklist for graduate applications, as the title first suggested to me. I found this book to be useful in defining my personal goals, identifying my own strengths and skill sets, and creating a carefully thought-out template for my applications to Clinical Psychology PhD programs. As a "non-traditional student" with a master's degree in psychology already under my belt, I was surprised by just how much I needed to read this book before preparing my applications. It is an excellent tool for both the focusing/narrowing down stage of the application process, and in preparing the applications themselves.

Very helpful indeed
I'm an undergrad in my senior year of Psychology. I bought this book to help guide me through the entire process, and so far it has been very helpful. I'll be graduating in 2010, and i'll update to note if I'm excepted to a Psych MA program.

Not a lot of new info
If you are already looking into faculty to work with or areas of study then you're probably going to buy the "Insider's Guide to Graduate Programs in Clinical and Counseling Psychology" anyways. I bought both thinking that this would help me more with figuring out the process, but most of the info is in the Insider's Guide already. It's well written and clear, but doesn't bring a lot of unique info.
