Product Description
It's 8:24 a.m. on a rainy Ohio Saturday. Jamie Fergurson, attorney and mother of two, shakes the water from her umbrella, crosses the carpeted foyer to the eight-foot banquet table serving asa registration desk and joins the tens of thousands of writers andwould-be writers who attend one of more than 400 writers' conferencesheld in the United States each year. Jamie will learn not onlysomething of the craft of writing but alsoof such things as firstserial rights, self-publishing, literary agents, query letters androyalties: the elements that constitute the business side of writing.

These conferences, depending on venue, number of workshops, who theworkshop leaders are and various other factors, traditionally costanywhere form $65 to $3000. Now, however, Ms. Ferguerson can takeadvantage of one of the most comprehensive writers' conferences everproduced 47 workshops presented by a host of distinguished agents, authors and editors for less than $20. And this conference doesn'trequire travel time or expense; the workshops may be taken in anyorder she wants and she may repeat them again, in their entirety, whenever desired. That's because this writers' conference is aconference in a book: The Portable Writers' Conference: Your Guide toGetting and Staying Published, edited by Stephen Blake Mettee.

The workshops are about evenly split between craft and business, fiction and nonfiction. Warner-Aspect Books' Editor-In-Chief BetsyMitchell explains how to sell yourself in a query letter withoutoffending the pro-spective editor. Literary agent Natasha Kern revealshow to find the right agent for you. Self-help book author Eric Maiseloffers a twelve-step program for non-Ph.D's who want to write aself-help book. Suzanne Forster, recipient of Romantic TimesMagazines's Career Achievement Award in Sensuality, tells how to writelove scenes that sizzle. Novelist Marilyn Meredith shows how to turnyour genealogy into fictional stories. Sara Ann Freed, executiveeditor, Mysterious Press, shares her seven secrets to creatingmemorable characters. Attorney-author John D. Zelezny deals withcopyright.

More than 45 chapters called workshops in the book provide instructionon the writing craft and the business of getting published.

Here's just a sample:

"Slice Yourself a Piece of Mud Pie!: Writing for the Children'sMarket" by children's literary agent Andrea Brown.

"Surfing the Internet for Facts: Tips for Researching Your NonfictionBook, Novel or Article Online" by Judith Broadhurst, publisher ofFreelance Success and author of The Woman's Guide to Online Services(Houghton-Mifflin)

"How to Write the Dynamite Love Scene: Sizzle Sells More Than JustSteaks, Learn How to Add Steam to Your Novel or Short Story" bynovelist Suzanne Forster, recipient of the "Career Achievement Awardin Sensuality" from Romantic Times Magazine.

"Listen!: How to Use Dialogue to Light Up Your Characters Until TheyAttract Readers Like Moths to a Flame" by award-winning novelist ParkeGodwin, author of many novels including Firelord, Beloved Exile, andCamelot.

The contributors are all experts in their particular field in thepublishing industry. They include: Sybil S. Steinberg, interviewseditor, Publishers Weekly, Katheryn Falk, editor and publisher ofRomantic Times Magazine, self-publishing guru Dan Poynter, BetsyMitchell, editor-in-chief, Warner-Aspect Books, James Frey, author ofHow to Write a Damn Good Novel (St.Martins), attorney JonathanKirsch, author of Kirsch's Handbook of Publishing Law (Acrobat) andSara Ann Freed, executive editor, Mysterious Press.

Interest in writers' conferences, with over 400 presented across thenation annually, is growing. This is the only "portable" writers'conference.

Collectively, the editor and the 47 contributors present workshops ortalks on writing and publishing over 200 times a year, making exposurefor this book both continuous and extensive.

Includes a thorough, annotated resources section listing writers'associations, magazines and other publications for writers, World WideWeb sites for writers, books on writing and publishing, samplemagazine and book publishers' guidelines, software for writers andother helpful resources.Amazon.com Review
"Every week in the United States someone, somewhere, isholding a writing conference." Thus opens this all-encompassingvolume by editor Stephen Mettee, allowing you to take a week off (or abunch of them) with its agglomeration of practical advice. The mainfocus is on do-it-yourselfers--small publishers who've shepherdedbooks into print, "how-to" authors excelling atpromotion--along with building blocks on character and story. Many ofthese "keynoters" include contact information. So, insteadof going to writers' conferences, this book may put you inposition to speak at one. Now, what are you doing next week? ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing special
I looked through this book and sent it back. Nothing new, just the usual info so while it might help if you're just starting out, there are lots of similar books out there - the title's a little misleading, it doesn't really take the place of attending a writer's conference.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a pot of gold!EXCELLENT BOOK!
This hefty volume chock full of gold! There are tons of articles written by accomplished/published writers -- these are not so much articles of their own experiences, as they are sort of "how to" type articles that are very helpful to the reader.Topping all that off there is a section called "Writer's Resources" which includes questions to ask literary agents, standard manuscript format, proofreader's marks, royalties and advances, average book print runs, sample magazine writer's guidelines, sample book publisher's writer's guidelines, magazines and newsletters of interest to writers, and the list goes on and on.Having recently attended a writer's conference, I can see that this book would indeed be helpful to people who have never been to one as well as people who have. This book is a font of helpful information & insightful articles -- truly a pot of gold!Buy one, you'll be glad you did!

The Portable Writers' Conference is an unusual book. An anthology on writing, it is like going to a writers' conference-without leaving home. And it is a great conference because each of the contributed pieces is byone of the best in the business. The writers who get their work published are not necessarily the most brilliant. They are writers who provide what editors and publishers want. Being a successful writer means balancing your individuality and enthusiasm with your writing and selling skills. It means: adopting a professional attitude from the start; writing as well as you can in your chosen field; giving editors what they want, not what you think they should want; presenting your work as editors like to see it; and, developing a mutually profitable relationship with a publisher. The world of publishing is volatile and highly competitive so you'll need a guide to show you how to give yourself the best chance of success. If you follow the advice in this book you'll save yourself a lot of time, money and frustration. Now in its 6th edition, this book has been thoroughly revised and updated to include: the absolute need to be computer-literate - the chances of success are limited these days for any writer without internet/e-mail access and the skills to use it; the advantages to the self-publisher offered byprint-on-demand technology; specific advice for beginners from established writers; updated information on how the world of publishing works, and how and why material is selected for publication; and, the importance of websites, blogging, pod-casting and other digital information. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book on writing short, contemporary romance
Though this concise, thorough, 162-page book is written by a British romance writer, it is still very helpful for American writers interested in the mechanics and market for short contemporary romance novels, the area in which the author has specialized.

Though her book is not as fleshed out as The Complete Idiot's Guide to Getting Your Romance Published by Julie Beard (a much larger book), Ms. Baker does an excellent job of pointing out the unique aspects of romance compared to other types of fiction. I will not list all the topics covered in this review, since you can click on the Table of Contents, index and browse 24 pages of the book on this web page. I, personally, found her sections on plotting the most useful parts of the book--very helpful!

For anyone interested in writing romance, Writing a Romantic Novel is well worth adding to your collection of how-to books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Misleading
Buying how to books without being able to browse them is always a risky proposition. I thought though, that I had made a good choice with this Teach Yourself book, `Writing a Romantic Novel and getting Published.' I amfamiliar with the Teach Yourself line of books and have always beenimpressed with their quality and this is a quality book. Just not what Ithought that it would be.

The author, Donna Baker is apparently apopular author in Britain, with Mill and Boons books, Harlequin if your inAmerica, and she refers often to her own books, and other books from thesame genre in this how to book. I do not want to write Harlequins and thisbook is written mainly for people who want to write a Harlequin romance.Unfortunatly that is not apparent with the fifty tag lines that areprovided for the book.

Ms. Baker spends the first couple chapters of thebook justifying writing romance novels. Really, if I felt the need tojustify wanting to write romances I WOULD NOT HAVE BOUGHT A BOOK ON HOW TOWRITE THEM, Jeeze.

Those points aside, it is a good how to write book ingeneral and a good reference on how to write Harlequin romances. I guesswhat I really did not like was her constant self-promotion. Writing aRomantic Novel has so much personal information about Ms. Baker that it isas much a book for fans of her other books as it is a how to book.

Ittakes the novice author from the beginning when one creates the charactersto the end getting it to the publishers in a clear and concise manner. Itis for the would be author of shorter 55,000 to 60,000 word romance's.However, her admittedly good writing advice can be found in a ReadersDigest, `how to write', book. If you just want to get started on a novel goahead and browse those. Their titles generally indicate when the books arefor a special market like science fiction or the short story market unlikethis book. Buy one of those if you want a good how to book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely a Must-Own
When I started out to sell my first book, I bought A LOT of books on agents and the publishing process. In the end, this is the only one I'd say was definitely useful. I spent probably a year querying agents unsuccessfully, and while that process forced me to think a lot more about audience, presentation and the reader's experience, it didn't result in much else except making me desperate and insecure. I eventually pitched an idea to an independent publisher directly, and that resulted in the publication of my first book. It was a GRUELING process and took longer than I would have wanted, but three years from inception to publication is really not bad. *How to Be Your Own Literary Agent* enabled me to feel confident I wasn't making any mistakes when I signed the contract (when I was WRITING the book, well, that was all on my shoulders).

I do think the publishing industry has evolved in a way that it excludes a lot of talented but inexperienced writers. In that respect, I think it's is easier for fiction writers, since there's an enormous community that's all about developing the skills you need to get from where you are to where you want to be. Even though nonfiction is much less competitive (and more lucrative), there's no comparable community dedicated to helping nonfiction writers develop the skills they need to produce an excellent product that publishers and readers will love. If that's the boat you're in, I don't know what to tell you except "Go with God."

Anyways, this is definitely at the top of my Top Ten Publishing Books. If you don't land an agent but are determined to press on, this is certainly a must-own.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the way to get published - it works!
I cannot thank Richard Curtis enough for this book. I'm not a reader of self-help books as a rule, but this one I underlined. My publisher - chosen with Curtis' instructions in mind - said he'd never seen a cleaner copy than my manuscript.

When I walked into my attorney's office with the list - Curtis" list - of the things I wanted to see in my contract, my attorney said, "You've been doing your homework!"

Thank you, Mr. Curtis; I'm a fan from the earliest edition, and I just bought 2003's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Service
I received this book as expected. It was in good condition, and I am enjoying reading it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Close Look at The Nasty Side of Book Publishing and The Nasty Side of Today's Literature
Dear Readers

I am remiss to say the least that I have not given due time and care to this "little number".

Yes, we unpublished writers are just "dyin' ta get published" in the timeless and honorable and mysterious way that such greats as Tennessee Williams and William Faulkner, not to mention the great Katherine Ann Porter, Bob Dylan, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and the list goes on.

Yeah, we are "a scratchin' and a crawlin' just ta get on sweet side of some literary agent so that we can get that "I'm gonna live forever feelin". "Abusin' ourselves in any way we can!" Humiliatin'...whatever it takes!

So, if you do not have a literary agent then it seems then you can "kiss that
"pulitzer",that "Book of the month Club whatever" and all those other "powerfully meaningful accolades" goodbye. And then there's "Hollywood" and oh my God! God only knows what you'll hav ta do ta get in there!!!

But then this "Literary generation" are not like the 1950's and 1960's really. There are no "risk takers" out there. Any that are have all "sold
out" to the establishment.

That's what this book really says.Literature if there is any is literally "dead". You can't be avant-garde and sell. You can't go against the "status quo" and sell. This generation is afraid, has been "beaten up"
has been "water-boarded" into believing what the generations of the 1950's and 1960's refused to believe would never have believed and that is what governments around the world are now saying. But then there are no John F. Kennedys left either. Are there?

The contradictions are glaringly childish.

I'm not publised that's right. And there's a reason why. The reading public is too chicken to read what I have to say.

But otherwise I'll give this gentleman five stars for his book. That should make the literary world of New York and other places like it happy. While they munch on their cheesecake and consider the really important issues like what kind of designer clothes to wear at some cheesy publicity event.
What kind of important statement to make in such a way that it seems "cool".Like they invented the word.

In the meantime, do I feel sorry for the countless readers out there who can't get it?Can't get the truth? Think again.

With Best Regards

5-0 out of 5 stars Though now a bit dated, the content is still relevant and very useful to young academics...
I have three books under my belt, one through a publishing company I established for the purpose of marketing a book that was too long, too detailed and too much of a niche topic that I really didn't think a publisher would take it without asking me to cut it in half -- it surprised me and was selected by CHOICE as as an "Outstanding Academic Title." My second was a modest paperback with the same attributes of the first; it was published by my employer-university. And, my third, that I co-authored with a good friend and scholar in my field, was published this year by one of the top academic presses in the world. In addition, I recently published -- through the press I established off to the side -- an excellent book on the 1918 influenza pandemic that is doing very well. All this to say that I've seen academic book publishing from a wide variety of situations and angles.

While "Getting Your Book Published" is now a bit dated, it still has excellent, well-presented content and should be required reading for young scholars with any interest in the publishing process. I thoroughly enjoyed its straightforward, direct style as the contributors discussed the book publishing world and how to go about submitting your book proposal and/or dissertation to a publisher. With a larger than usual font for an academic title and shorter chapters that allows one to read it in just a couple of afternoons, the authors provide readers and would-be authors with a good fundamental understanding of how to go about getting published.

Coverage includes: a discussion of the various types of publishers and the bottom-line economics they deal with to market books and survive; how one decides whether their book should be rewritten into one or more journal articles or can be broadened and rewritten into a book; the process of identifying and submitting a manuscript to the right publisher; how to prepare a book prospectus; how the peer-review process works; working with an editor; and, the book production and marketing process.

From my experienced vantage point I believe that these authors are right on target with their descriptions and advice. And, though the title is now a bit dated, with the intense competition in the book-publishing industry today, it is still relevant and should be considered even more carefully to survive in a world where it gets tougher every day for young professors to get published.

Highly recommended for college and university library collections and individual faculty seeking a mentor-in-print to help them understand and successfully push a book project through from idea to publication.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best practical advice I've encountered on the subject
Mike Bailey has long experience of publishing (and writing) erotic books in the UK - he founded the Nexus imprint for Virgin and managed all the Headline erotic imprints until they retreated from the genre in the late 90s.As a consequence it's worth taking his pithy but to-the-point remarks on board - particularly if you're new to the business.I've published four erotic novels and still found his remarks relevant, both in and out of erotica. It's obvious from some of the comments below that the 'Britishness' of the text is a little bewildering for US readers accustomed to how-to authors dotting every I and dotting every T. Persevere, guys! Sometimes less is more. It's also possible to be witty and make a serious point at the same time.

2-0 out of 5 stars I CAN teach myself without disappointment
I bought this book thinking highly of it, i was pretty dissappointed with the way the book carried itself.mr.bailey didn't really give me any information i could really use. and he has a "10 commandments of erotica" in this book that covers some of the ideas i use in my stories. he is informative but this is the kind of book a novel writer should buy and not an amateur like myself,i give him some credit, but i would not recommend this book to anybody.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough practical advice
Iwas looking for more technique advice. This book doesn't deliver.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, Misleading
This book was hard to rate. When I 1st opened it's stiff pages for just a peek before bed, I found myself still engulfed an hour later. Yet I felt deep disappointment.

I have been writing short-story porn-erotica for a few years, successfully. What I had hoped to glean from this book were the nitty gritty details of actually getting published, as the title clearly promises. I looked for the all important contract examples, publisher contacts (at the very least addresses to write for guidelines) & sources with addresses for publishing short-story erotica. None of these promised components were included in this book! I'm not sure how the author can justify his claims to helping anyone "get published" through this book.

If you already know how to write, skip this book & find one that includes publisher information at the very least. This author's excuse for not including the vital information for which I bought this book, was that guidelines change quickly. This doesn't excuse the fact that addresses of publishing houses rarely change so quickly & should have been included so that writers could request the latest guidelines. Instead I am left to either search for another book that delivers the information it promises to, or do the research on my own.

I didn't need to buy or read this book to learn how to write erotica (although I am always open to learning new techniques), nor to read the obvious well-known industry tidbits. Almost everything in this book was useless to a writer who actually wants to publish their work.

As to the writing style, I find no fault. This book is an easy, quick read with writing exercises at the end of each chapter. It does very briefly (less than a paragraph each) cover such issues as using a pseudonym & literary agents but again, writers are expected to find the actual information on their own. This book does NOT provide ANY actual information on how to get published. I truly feel that the title is misleading, false advertisement.

I wanted to give this book a 5 rating but obviously it doesn't deliver the goods, which would place it at a 2 rating in my opinion. The reason I rated it a 3: for people who don't know anything about writing erotica, Writing Erotic Fiction : And Getting Published (Teach Yourself) by Mike Bailey, will at least get you started.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better on second reading
When I first read this, I felt a bit insulted, as though somehow erotica is less than other forms of writing. But upon a second reading I realized that much of what I was offended by might be the "Britishness" of the text and author, and that is something to keep in mind, what may be published in Europe and liked in Europe but not sell in America, or Asia, or elsewhere. The chapters are short, I think they might do nicely for first time writers, and the harsh facts about not deluding yourself when you write could be good for those embarassed by their writing. But frankly some of us do write others types of books and we don't think of our erotica as taking any less skill or talent.Since erotica is about a very personal matter -- intimacy and sexuality -- it should be something that writers and readers spend time and talent on whether for private use or public consumption. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Finding the Right Publisher . . .
. . . or publishing yourself. Getting Your Book Published describes how to find and work with an agent and how to find and work with a publisher. Eighty percent of the books purchased by the five big (New York) publishers are agented; 20% are sold to them directly.

Bob Bly describes evaluating your idea, creating your outline, proposal writing, locating a literary agent, selling to a publisher, negotiating the contract, and delivering the manuscript. He even compares selling out to self-publishing.

Bob Bly is a very successful author and business copywriter. (Click on his name above to see the list of his Works.)

As the author of 113 books (including revisions and foreign-language editions) and over 500 magazine articles, I highly recommend this volume to writers DanPoynter@ParaPublishing.com.

1-0 out of 5 stars Minimal at best
I was very disappointed in this book, whose reputation has apparently been exaggerated. It was minimal information at best--nothing I couldn't have gotten from the FAQs section of the Harlequin website.

5-0 out of 5 stars Romance Writer's Pink Pages : The Insider's Guide to Getting
Romance Writer's Pink Pages : The Insider's Guide to Getting Your Romance Novel Published (1996/97) is an excellent reference for the fledgling romance writer, a 'must have.'The Pink Pages gives the guidelines andcriteria of what the romance publishers are looking for in a manuscript, aswell as names and addresses of publishers, for everything from novels toshort stories.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good resources, some drawbacks
This book has a lot of good points - writer's tip sheets, suggestions, markets that not everyone has heard of.

However, there are some drawbacks. The most notable comes from the sheer volitility of thepublishing market - editors rotate, move around, leave jobs, etc. Andwriters, using a contact name several months or years old will look foolishto the people they are trying to impress with their proffesionalism. Theother drawback I found was in incorrect information. For example, they listpresident names of RWA chapters. Only the person they listed as my chapterpresident hadn't been president for more than three years. In another spot, they list a phone number for a publisher. I called to have a tip sheet sentto me. Only, it was an incorrect number.

I felt the drawbacks, though, were merely inherent in the style of book. I would, therefore, stillrecommend it to a writer trying to break into the market. ... Read more
