3-0 out of 5 stars Plan to enjoy this book
The book I have is the exact one but it's blue instead of pink.It was a good book to read, but, nothing stood out that I remember without opening it up and glancing back through the pages.I think the title aims to latch on to the writers who may think of themselves as advanced writers and it backfires by not really giving any new information that the Marshall Plan For Getting Your Novel Published: 90 strategies and techniques for selling your fiction to brag about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Advice
The author clearly knows how to write as well as to describe the writing process. I particularly liked the innovative and astute observations he uses on several aspects on writing a novel...ranging from using careful placement of the viewpoint, to knowing when to describe characters or places in the story.
Very succinct, and with plenty of writing examples, Evan Marshall gained a foothold in my library of writing books. Every serious writer should read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Nuts and Bolts Advice
Not much of that arthouse stuff here, folks.Ambigous ramblings on the mystery of the craft are noticably absent. That's because ambiguity and mystery are precisely what this book serves to erradicate.

Having read and benefited from Marshall's earlier works on writing, my hopes for this one were high.Mr. Marshall did not dissapoint.Face it, we glad men and women in the army of the unpublished are amateurs--but we don't have to present ourselves as such.He doesn't cotton to our "foster your creativity" sort of needs; he takes us to boot camp, shows us what it's going to take to become writers.I loved it.More than that, I needed it:From shoring up my plot and pace to letting me know exactly what my ms., cover letter, synopsis, etc. needed to convey and look like.Want to break into print?Start with "The Marshall Plan for Novel Writing".Then get this one.Years from now, if you are honest with yourself, you'll be glad you did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
As a child learns the ABC's so the neophyte writer begins their quest toward their desired craft of story telling. This book has helped me tremendously. Having finished my novel I didn't know the first step toward becoming published. This book has given me that information and much more. The final sentence Quote 'You can't not write' should speak for all avid readers that someday pickup their pen (word processor?) and begin their long awaited novel. If I never succeed into print I will spend the rest of my life writing and reading, I can think of anything I'd rather do.
A great book of instruction, don't miss it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Portable Writer's Conference lives up to its title as a confluence of hard-earned wisdom
Now in a newly updated edition, The Portable Writer's Conference: Your Guide to Getting Published is a compilation of wisdom from over forty-five editors, agents, and authors, presented to writers from all walks of life seeking publication. From developing a concept pitch to hear an agent say yes, to crafting a professional-quality feature article for a newspaper or magazine, to tips and tricks for running a successful home-based writing business, crafting nonfiction or self-help books, what every author must know about copyright, and much more, The Portable Writer's Conference is a wisdom-laden supplement to getting one's feet wet in the writing profession. Though not a substitute for a straightforward instructional manual to the writing business, The Portable Writer's Conference lives up to its title as a confluence of hard-earned wisdom gathered from expert writers of all backgrounds. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lives up to its title
Yes, there are a lot of good books on writing, but many fall short of really helping you move ahead. This book, while not quite like a conference experience, takes you past all the doubts, and "How do I do this?" to a path toward success.I'm biased, but particularly pleased to see the publishing process explained in a way that encourages people to follow their path.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Advice for LDS Authors!
I highly recommend this book and would have given it five stars except for the fact that there was a small typo or two in it--not the fault of the authors, who are all excellent writers.

Although the book states it's for LDS writers who want to break into the LDS market, the advice given applies to national market publishing in many cases.

I purchased this book at the beginning of my writing career, when I knew nothing about how to get my work published, and learned extensively from it. I'd recommend it to anyone who is interested in having his or her work published. The information runs the gamut from how to write query letters to handling rejections. Thanks in part to "Publising Secrets," my co-author, Nichole Giles, and I now have a book of LDS humor that will be released in the fall of 2009. [....]

5-0 out of 5 stars An LDS aunthor's best friend
This book has everything a buding author would want to know. All the writers of the book are authors who have broken into the LDS market and know what they're talking about. And they go though everything! from how to handle difficult topics and thymes for an LDS audience, to how to write a quarry letter and submit your work, even on how they've handled rejection letters. The advice from this book is just overwelming. It's a absolute must have for anyone who wants to be an LDS author. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
A witty and candid firsthand account -- for writers by a writer -- on how to write, sell, publish, and promote a book.

This invaluable book is written by a working writer -- not a professor, not a publisher, not an editor, not an agent. Robert Masello is a writer who speaks his mind with absolute candor on everything aspiring book authors need to know. He explains the publishing process step by step -what to expect, how it works, and what authors can do at each point to keep things going smoothly. Equally important, Masello has a lot of fun doing it. His book is filled with sometimes hilarious anecdotes from his own experiences in the trenches of publishing.

Writer Tells All covers many topics along the way, both large and small, including the things every writer needs to know: choosing a book topic (fiction or nonfiction), writing the proposal, selecting an agent, understanding book contracts, finding an editor, losing an editor, following the production process from manuscript to bound book, using your own savvy and contacts to maximize the effect of marketing, and publicizing the finished product.
Amazon.com Review
Robert Masello's Writer Tells All starts at the very beginning of the writing process--"Starbucks should be your reward, not your office"--and follows through to the (often) very bitter end. Most books, says Masello in this humorous introduction to the business of writing a book and getting it published, seem to be "published in the dead of night, distributed under the tightest security, and publicized at a pitch that only dogs can hear." Masello discusses book proposals, first drafts, agents, editors, contracts, publicists, book tours, and royalties. He dispels the myth of the autographed copy (contrary to popular belief, publishers do take signed returns from bookstores), divulges the secret to knowing whether there's a check included with your royalty statement (hint: feel for staples), and discloses the dreary truth about book signings ("you'd make more money babysitting"). He braces his readers for those charming conversations with talk-show hosts who "have spent more time combing their hair than they have preparing for your interview," and he revels in the glory that having a publicist invites. "There's something absolutely wonderful about having someone whose job it is to say nothing but good things about you," he writes. "Even your mom may occasionally have her doubts, but your publicist? Never." --Jane Steinberg ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and instructive for non-writers as well as writers
I'm one of the horde of wannabee writers who never had the self discipline to knuckle down and seriously write, and so I found this highly instructive as well as, thanks to Masello's humor and informal conversational style, entertaining. For those like me, it gives an inside look at what a writer's life is along with the frustrations as well as the rewards. This is especially meant for those bitten with the writing bug, but is equally rewarding for those considering writing, those who have always meant and wanted to and didn't, and those who actually are producing writers. It even has a quick word of advice for those who write reviews. Most highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for the midlevel unpublished writer
Covers some salient points for the midlevel unpublished writer:

(1) What to look for when selecting an agent;

(2) Understanding how publishers make their money;

(3) Breakdown of your contract with a publisher;

(4) Why you shouldn't write in a cafe;

(5) Average money for a first time novel; and

(6) Marketing yourself in many ways.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clever and Motivational
I would dare say that this is a book that anyone would enjoy, whether you aspire to be the next JK Rowling or not.Very witty and entertaining!

4-0 out of 5 stars What To Expect!
This was a wonderful, funny book. It reminded me a little of "What to Expect When You're Expecting," because, although it has great advice and worst-case-scenarios, it may be too much information for the fledgling writer. Kind of like too much information for the first-time pregnant woman. I don't recomment first-time pregnant women read "What to Expect..." past the fifth month.

Similarly, Masello's book may be too discouraging to read before you've actually written a book.

Don't read this book until you are almost completed, or completed with your project and are ready to find an agent. Don't let this book, or any book or reference about publishing discourage or stifle you. Write the book! Then, read this book.

It's hilarious and very helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad at all
It's an old cliche but I wish I'd had this book a few months ago when I was negotiating my first book contract. There is a lot of good info in "Writer Tells All," covering the high and low points of writing a first book.

Some reviewers have railed against this title, saying that it's yet another 'you can do it' book, but I didn't find that to be the case. I already write for a living, so I tend to find those 'go for it' books to be boring and pointless for me--of course I know I can finish what I write; I do that every day. Instead, I found that this book did a great job of exploring the minute details and experiences that I've come across, and answering a number of questions that I had.

While this book is relatively lighthearted, it's not a lightweight book--there's a lot of useful and legitimate info, from how to come up with a decent title, to how to deal with all the people who want free copies of your book (I haven't even handed in my manuscript to my publisher yet and I've already had more than 70 people as for free copies; as you might expect, I found his advice very useful).

Due to the format of using many small chapters, I was able to quickly dig through it and find a section on what how to approach whatever was bugging me at the moment. Of particular importance to me, was that it evenly divided its attention between fiction and nonfiction--books of this sort seem to always focus on fiction, which is useless to me with my current project.

Some web reviews I read of this book were pretty harsh, noting that it doesn't provide massive factual examples--say, a 15-page example of a book proposal, for instance. Frankly, that would stop the flow of "Writer Tells All" dead, plus there's entire books out there about how to write a book proposal. On the other hand, I did find that the book sometimes promises more than it can deliver (the aforementioned chapter on titles could have used some more name-generating ideas, for instance). Also, the writing style meandered quite a bit, often merely to throw in a few gags. While I make as many stupid jokes as the next guy, it sometimes felt as if the points were there to illustrate the humor, as opposed to the other way around.

Nonetheless, I dug "Writer Tells All." Unfortunately for the author (but excellent for me), I found my copy for $2 while browsing a street seller's table in New York City. As a result, I can honestly say, "Writer Tells All" was worth every penny and then some. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars How to write publishable Science Fiction and Fantasy
As a beginning Science Fiction and Fantasy writer, I found this book severely dissappointing. It's not that it isn't a useful book, or that it's badly written; what I disliked, was that half the examples were telling you what you could and could not get away with rather than how to write high quality fiction and best captivate your readers. I went through the book constantly thinking "Gosh! I could write better than this guy, what does he think he's going on about?"

Despite that, there is still a lot that the beginning writer can learn from this book, and does give you a decent idea of what level you need to be at in order to get published. However, if you're looking to write at the best of your ability and come up with genuinely interesting plots, I suggest reading Orson Scott Card's book instead.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes difficult to read
Teach Yourself Writing Fantasy & Science Fiction is more focused on the philosophies of writing instead of the actual act of writing. It depends on what a person is looking for.

Mr. Stableford's own artistic science fiction/fantasy writing style seems to saturate the book, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It just makes the book as a non-fiction a little bit difficult to follow sometimes.

I enjoyed his occasional touching on the subject of themes (or uses of certain themes) that have been over used in the history of Fantasy and Science Fiction. I also liked his discussions on how even though Fantasy and SF can take places in worlds very different from our own, there has to be some amount of reality or plausibility in them for a reader to understand and feel comfortable reading about it.

3-0 out of 5 stars good for writing, so-so for sci fi
This is a good book if you're not very familiar with writing techniques in general, but if you've taken even one college course in writing, forget it. I was hoping for more specific science fiction writing techiques, and was a little disappointed not to find them. If that's what you want, try another book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dry, academic and strangely useful
This is a good book for the price. However, don't expect too much, especially if you're used to seeing practical examples in your how-to books. The advice contained in the book is solid, well-written and to the point, but I found that there was little content devoted to SF/F-specific subjects. Overall, the tone is very academic -- which may actually appeal to some readers -- but I find that a more hands-on or inspirational style that I've seen in other books is more helpful to me. If you are serious about writing and are well-versed in writing techniques you might benefit from this book in one fashion: It contains hidden gems (few and in between) about the approach to the story!

4-0 out of 5 stars A worthy resource, though somewhat hard to read
I consider Stableford as among the lower profile hallmark names in the sci-fi/fantasy industry, but he's been around long enough to be an authority on the topic. I have read a few novels and a short story of his recently, but I read this book before all those. Stableford's advice is extensive and used a lot of examples to illustrate points about speculative fiction writing. However, his book falls short in presentation because it uses a lot of continuous text, which can be tiring and monotonous for those whose attention control needs an extra kick. There is a lot to learn from this book, but its presentation could be greatly improved by using a graphic manner. There certainly are some perspectives and points about science fiction and fantasy writing that can be garnered from Stableford, though, so I don't think I wasted my P279. If you can afford to get this, do so. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars OK for teachers; not so much for parents or kids
"Getting Kids Published" (first edition) was a bit of a disappointment. It may have been that I expected it to be directed toward kids themselves and their parents rather than teachers in a classroom setting, but I didn't find an overwhelming amount of material that was useful. The parts that we used were more concerned with addresses of sites that actually accept children'spublications but that was about all.If the prospective purchaser is a teacher, however, this book may be very helpful to you. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable.
What else can I say?I have been writing since birth (well, it feels like it) and found this book at the ripe old age of 39 - where has it been all my life?I learned more from Pat Kubis and Bob Howland in "The Complete Guide to Writing Fiction and Nonfiction" than I have in years of college writing courses, tutorials, personal practice, and dozens of other writing text.Truely indispensable.Worth every penny. The next book I publish will have a thank you noted to Kubis and Howland... no kidding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Teaching and Learning Tool
I have been teaching various mainstream writing classes for twenty years now and have used several writing books; but this is by far the best teaching tool in my arsenal.
I have been told time and time again by my students that this book actually helps them learn to hone their own writing. The examples used are short and on target. Many students who had taken previous college courses say that this book far surpasses any college text they used in the past.

What I like about the book is that it shows the student how to take their own writing and make it better. It is NOT a book that intimidates students with long literary pieces written by famous authors. Instead it uses short paragraphs of literary pieces to prove the point of the lesson.

I have worn out two books throughout the years and my third is now in sad shape.Soon I will order a fourth. If you are serious about learning the craft of writing then this is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars First class "how to" book
I have taken 4 Creative Writing classes, each given by a published author.I was one of the better students in each class. This book was the text of one of the classes. It was the only text book, and the class was the only class, that I actually learned how to write better.Other classes and other text books discussed how professional writers write but they gave me no usable tools that I could apply to improve my writing. This book will make a dedicated literate person into a very good amateur writer and it will tell that good amateur how to construct a manuscript that is publishable. It will not make a good amateur into a Steinbeck. The other "how to write" books I have read (and I have read quite a few) attempted to make me into a great artist.None of them, however, added anything to my toolbox of writing skills.

I used this as a handbook for several years before I made the mistake of loaning it to a friend who had the good sense to steal it from me, so I am buying another copy. ... Read more

The Herculean effort required to write a book can seem almost negligible when compared with the energy it takes to line up a hardworking agent, a caring editor, and an acceptable contract. Agents, Editors, and You, edited by Michelle Howry, is a substantial primer for the uninitiated. The book is divided into four sections: Preparing and Submitting Your Manuscript, Selling Your Manuscript, Publishing 101, and Trends in Publishing Today. Howry and the publishing professionals included here emphasize that just as a writer's work is scrutinized, so should the writer examine the work of the agent and the editor, the value of the contract, and the promotion plan. Issues of contemporary concern--e-queries, e-publishing, self-publishing, and even an odd riff on anthrax in the mail--are given their due. The many interviews with and essays by well-regarded agents and editors put a human face on what can often seem from the outside like a corporate monolith. And it is particularly nice to know that, at least according to Jonathan Galassi, editor in chief of Farrar, Straus and Giroux, "there's plenty of room for idealism in publishing today." --Jane Steinberg ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Straight Talk To Writers
Every publishing experience is different. Each agent and each publisher operates in a different way--but the overall process has many of the same principles. These principles are captured and explained in this excellent compilation of articles from various F & W Publications.

In one concise volume, you will learn about preparing and submitting your manuscript. How to determine if you need an agent, then how to find the right one and what does an agent do anyway? The answers are in this volume.

After you locate an agent or determine if you need one, what are nonfiction editor looking for? What are fiction editors searching for? Or what are children's editors searching for? These questions are answered in these pages.

Finally what is that process after your book is contracted? How do you work with your editor? What expectations should I have after my book is published?

Publishing is constantly changing and there are no permanent answers but I found the wisdom in these pages worthwhile and something I recommend to writers who are looking for solid answers to their questions.

As editor Michelle Howry writes in her introduction, "Getting a book published is an arduous task. It often seems as if the publishing industry itself was structured to make it as difficult as possible for a first-time author to figure it all out. It's challenging, but there is hope. As you'll see throughout this book, agent and editors really are still searching for talented new writers. Use this book like a road map, inside you'll find the information you need to navigate the unfamiliar publishing landscape and find publishing success. Rely on the advice of these "publishing mentors"--along with your amazingly well-written book--to target an agent, wood an editor, and earn a book contract."

Sound words are in these pages. I recommend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Minimal Help
If you've read many writing guides, this one will be of minimal help. It's a collection of old articles and interviews, most preceeding the 2002 publication date by 1-3 years. There's nothing here you can't find on-line or in a book with more specific help.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review by Irene Watson, author of "The Sitting Swing."
One of the better "investments" I made when buying a self-help book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Agents, editors and you
If you have not read Writer's Market, this book will be of help.
I find only two dog eared pages after reading the book. I had either read the information in it years ago in other books, or it did nothing for my main desire when I bought the book. Which was a list of reputable agents.
I dog eared "zero in on potential agents", and that Literary agents are the exact same as an editor of days gone by, with the same heavy work load. That electronic submission was not an in thing.
I live in Germany and do not have a used book store to get rid of it in. Any good book I have is full of dog ears no matter what it is. If it has no dog ears it is not a good book. I do not recomemend it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fine Reference Guide
Bob Mayer's "The Novel Writer's Toolkit" is an excellent novel writing guide. Other books I've read on the subject have tried to focus too heavily on the technical aspects of writing and not so much on the steps and concepts. What makes this book so easy to read is that everything is broken down into individual tools that, when read in order, will walk you through the entire novel writing process from beginning to end. However, it possesses far more "meat" than a simple bullet-point list. Each tool receives it's own chapter and is explained in depth, thus fulfilling a vital role as a reference guide. Since each tool is broken into its own section, it's easy to search through the book to find what you want to know.

The Novel Writer's Toolkit is a boon to anyone wanting to learn the process behind writing a novel or desiring to polish their current skills. I repeatedly return to it over and over again for guidance during my writing endeavors and it does not let me down. ... Read more
