Catechist: A person who loves children and teens and would like to teach and share the faith with one of the following age levels: 4-5 year olds, 1-7th graders. Catechist formation is provided. Catechist Helper: A person to help the catechist in the classroom each week. Does not have to prepare lessons or teach. Catechist Substitute: A person to fill in when a catechist has to be absent. You will not be called at the last minute, but will have time to prepare. Clerical Workers: Weekday volunteers are needed for general clerical work. One Time Per Year Commitment: These are: Christmas Program reception; Bread baking/Banner making workshop for children celebrating First Communion, and cookie baking.

The children stay with the adults in the "big room" for the first fifteen minutes or so to see the chalice lighting, hear the opening prayers, and participate in a "Sharing Moment." Then the children go with their teachers to the Religious Education classrooms down the hall. Classes last for about 45 minutes; then the children join the adults for snacks. Visit BETWEEN SUNDAYS for some answers and discussions about Unitarian Universalism. The RE teachers are all volunteers. The year is divided into four sessions (Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer). Teachers and assistants sign up for one session at a time, and most classes are taught by a team of 2-4 teachers, who take turns from week to week. This way, signing up to be a teacher means being with the children for six to eight Sundays a year, not a life-time commitment. All adults with children in the program are expected to assist or teach once a month.

Extractions: I have received a number of letters from parents asking how their children may obtain a "religious education" outside of a church setting. These parents are familiar with trinitarian churches where children are taught that "human beings are naturally bad, and all people will be punished by eternal torture in "hell" unless they believe that Jesus died as a sacrifice to appease God's wrath." Intelligent parents do now want their children to be taught these irrational and inhumane beliefs. This essay is written in response to these parents and others who are interested in religious education for their children. In my view, religious education is too important to turn over to anyone other than parents (or whoever is rearing the child). I am writing this essay from a Christian Deist viewpoint. Let me begin by recognizing that most parents want to help their children grow and develop as healthy and happy individuals. Parents usually know (or can learn) how to meet the physical and intellectual needs of their children. Parents know that a child needs good food, exercise, rest, and medical care to develop a healthy body. Parents know that a child needs education to develop academic knowledge and skills. But parents also know that a child needs some kind of overall view of life that will help the child (now and as an adult) to cope with the questions and experiences that he or she will inevitably face in life. This "overall view of life" may be called a "philosophy of life" or "religion."
