She was chairman of Wider Quaker Fellowship of the American Section of the Friends' World Committee from 1943-1963. It is the only program of its kind, focused on research that expands our base of knowledge about women in religion. Well over 100 Research Associates have participated in the Program. Together, they have produced a body of scholarship that has helped transform the study of religion and the theological education of ministers and religious leaders. Their publications challenge long-held assumptions about the meaning of religious scriptures, the presence of women as religious leaders, and the significance of religious teachings and practices. Extractions: Citing Sources in Research Papers Looking for Books Home There are basically two ways to search for information on a topic: using key words from the title or information about the item, and using subject headings (also sometimes referred to as descriptors). While keyword searching relies on the language used by the author, the publisher, or the person writing the abstract or summary, subject headings use a single word or phrase to represent a particular topic or concept. For example, the terms substance abuse chemical dependency , and addiction are all terms used to describe the same concept, but only one of them will be used as the subject heading. This makes subject headings a very powerful way to search for information on a topic, because once you know the subject heading, you can search for everything on the topic regardless of the language used in the title or other information about a book. Extractions: Director since 1979 of the Bangladesh National Book Centre, Fazle Rabbi has studied book production and marketing in many countries. After graduating from Karachi University, he joined Bangla Academy in his native Dhaka, where he served as Director of Publication, Sales and Printing. Author and translator of numerous books in Bengali, Rabbi has served the cause of the book in Bangladesh as teacher, innovator and organizer. Recently formed countries provide revealing case studies of the role of the book in national development because experience which has taken decades in countries with longer histories has to be compressed into years. Bangladesh (population 110 million) became independent in 1971. It had been part of Pakistan for twenty-four years, its culture, industry, politics and inevitably its literature being subservient to the Urdu-speaking West Pakistan, 2,000 miles away. East Pakistan, as Bangladesh had been called, was the creation of the decision in 1947 to allocate predominantly Muslim areas to Pakistan. Bengali-speaking East Pakistanis revolted and Bangladesh became suddenly independent as the outcome of war between India and Pakistan. The Bangladeshis were then faced with all of the challenges of new nationhood, in which the development of a publishing industry, a book trade, a national literature and a library system were low priorities. Under Pakistani rule, the only publishers had been school textbook suppliers, distributing books authorized by the government.

Extractions: FAS Courses of Instruction Comparative Study of Religion Dr. Kimerer LaMothe, Head Tutor The Comparative Study of Religion offers undergraduates access to a range of human experiences that have produced much of the greatest literature of the world, inspired its art and philosophy, and shaped its moral consciousness. The concentration also provides students with a basic understanding of one or two of the major religious traditions of the world through study of the traditions' sacred books, ritual and artistic symbolism, philosophy and theology, and the traditions' social history. To achieve its ends, the concentration stresses the acquisition of certain specific skills: (1) the arts of reading and interpreting texts; (2) clear writing (essays are a substantial part of the requirements of the sophomore and junior tutorials); (3) an understanding of the basic modern literature on the theory of religion and of the methods of the study of religious phenomena; (4) a reading knowledge of a foreign language. Concentrators draw up a Plan of Study under the supervision of the Head Tutor and their adviser in consultation with appropriate members of the Committee on the Study of Religion. There are three options within the field: one involving work in two religious traditions, one in a single tradition, and one in a single tradition and in a secondary field of study. All three programs involve required work in general, methodological, or comparative courses outside of the major religious tradition(s) being studied. Concentration credit for study abroad is possible; students interested in such credit must petition the Committee on the Study of Religion, through the Head Tutor.
