Tug-of-war was always contested as a part of the track and field athletics programme, although it is now considered a separate sport. The Olympic champions were as follows: 1900: a combined Swedish/Danish team; 1904: an American club team representing the Milwaukee Athletic Club; 1906: Germany/Switzerland; 1908: a British team from the City of London Police Club; 1912: Sweden; and 1920: Great Britain. Golf has been on the Olympic programme twice, in 1900 and 1904. There were two golf events in 1900 - one for gentlemen and one for ladies. Golf is one of the world's most popular sports, being played in well over 100 nations world-wide. Golf also has a long history, as it origins can be traced back several centuries, and it has had organised international competitions since the mid-19th century. In the last decade golf has made entreaties to be returned to the Olympic programme. Rugby football is one of the earliest forms of football in which the ball is carried rather than kicked. It developed in Great Britain in the mid-19th century. Originally, rugby league was considered the professional sport and rugby union the amateur one, but in 1995 the International Rugby Board made rugby union an open sport, allowing professional competition. Rugby union football was held at the Olympics in 1900, 1908, 1920 and 1924.

The Stadium was built as a training venue for the 1956 Olympic Games. The main stadium (known as 'Olympic Park Stadium') has room for 20,000 spectators with grandstands on either side of the ground. The Stadium has a world-class athletics track and a soccer pitch which was the first pitch in Australia recognized by FIFA. It is also the home of Soccer in Melbourne with many matches played at the venue over the years including Internationals, National Soccer League finals and grand finals, as well as home games for Melbourne Knights and Carlton Soccer Clubs. The atmosphere at Olympic Park is electric, especially at Melbourne Storm home games. There used to be a second stadium at Olympic Park, you can see the grand stand at the bottom-right corner of the photo above, that used to be a gray hound track. It was closed when City Link decided to build the entrances to one of the tunnels in the stadium. Olympic Park may well be redeveloped in the near future in time for the 2006 Commonwealth Games as it will play host to Rugby matches.

Rugby - Rugby 7s Rugby is a proud team sport, its roots going back well over 150 years. It is now a truly global game and is played by over 3 million people throughout the world on all continents. The object of the game is that two teams of fifteen players each, according to the Laws and a sporting spirit, should, by carrying, passing, kicking and grounding the ball, score as many points as possible. The team scoring the greater number of points to be the winner of the match. In addition to the fifteen a side format which, at the top level, involves fifteen players on the field of play (8 forwards and 7 backs) and 7 replacements, there is the seven-a-side game comprising 7 players on the field (3 forwards and 4 backs) and 3 replacements. It is the seven a side format, the rugby 7s, that features in The World Games. The game is generally played on a grass surface measuring no more than 100 metres by 70 meters. Rugby is an outdoor sport although some matches have been played in large roofed arenas and on a variety of surfaces and in all conditions.
