I would recommend it for young readers....
I would recommend this book to children of young ages. It teaches the very basics on hamster care but does not go into depth about these things like I was hoping . : / If you have a child between the ages of 6 or 7 to 10 this would be a GREAT book for them to understand how to groom ,when to feed, what to feed,and how to set up there cages . : ) ... A Helpful Secondary Book For Rabbit Care
This particular book has not been the most helpful rabbit care book for me, not because of the content, but because it seems to focus more on keeping outdoor rabbits rather than indoor rabbits. It also assumes that rabbit care is the top priority of those who keep rabbits. Most of us, who keep rabbits as house pets do not have the time to hunt and gather the food the author suggests. We buy hay and pellets at the local pet store and provide a few fruit slices as a treat. However, this book is helpful. For one thing it lists poisonous plants as well as edible food that rabbits enjoy. Since rabbits always seem to find a way to eat something they are not supposed to eat (I paid $436 in vet bills when my Dutch decided to eat a calla lily), information about keeping rabbits out of mischief and appropriate food is helpful. The book is also illustrated and contains wonderful plates identifying certain breeds of rabbits as well as description of various breeds.

Probably the greatest strength of this book is that it takes rabbit care seriously, just as one would care for a dog or cat. Its major flaw is that it is now a bit dated. I would recommend this book as a secondary handbook and since it is not too expensive, it is worth having on the shelf.

Great Book but not enough color
I love this book, but i am already an experienced rabbit owner and i know what i am doing.although this book is very detailed in the different aspects of pet care, and things like that, it is not a book to read for entertainment.if you are interested in entertainment, you may want to turn to Hop To It! or The House Rabbit Handbook.Great book for a newbie though!

If You Own A Rabbit, You Must Have This Book
This book should be mandatory for rabbit owners.I found the information to be extremely useful, from what food to feed them to what symptoms indicate what illnesses.You'll learn why rabbits behave the way they doand how to keep your rabbit safe and happy.

Some of the chaptersweren't relevant to me because I was not raising a show rabbit.I wasn'tinterested in the information about breeding, breeds, etc. but it wasinteresting nonetheless.

The first time my rabbit was ill, I panicked andthat's what prompted me to buy the book.Fortunately, he had just eatentoo much grass and was fine by the next day.I referred to this bookcountless times in my rabbit's 9 years.

If you own a rabbit, buy thebook.It's interesting reading and will put your mind at easy when yourrabbit isn't feeling well.You can teach your kids how to properly carefor their bunnies which will add to your enjoyment and will help you ensureyour bunny is with you for many years.

One word of advice:hide the bookfrom your rabbit.Rabbits love to chew on just about everything!

This isn't the best book for rabbit breeders in the U.S.
I have this book, and although the author does a fair job in describing the care of a rabbit, she simply has things left out that should be included.

The listings of breeds (and show terminology) are from the UK,and would confuse readers in the US.Same for the listing of plants (whichI think she went overboard on this area.)

There IS a decent section ongenetics, however it isn't as accurate or current as I would prefer.

Readit at the library, but don't waste your money on it if you want seriousinformation.

A Good Basic Book - But Stick With Donna Anastasi
First off, I've read MANY of Sue Fox's books, and I find absolutely no fault with her research or presentation.As a small animal vet, I give her opinions great weight.That being said, my issue is with TFH and other "pet care" books affiliated with the pet food and product industry... specifically, the placement of easily identified products in photographs, even if those products are not the best items for the featured pet.

In two of the Animal Planet pet guides, for example, there are written sidebars or paragraphs "debunking" the issue of pine and cedar bedding.Fueled by the wood producers, these try to convince first time owners that there is no hard science proving that phenols from softwood shavings cause lung damage in small pets.This is patently false - see a paper written by a doctoral student here:

No legitimate breeder or rescue will recommend softwood bedding - not only for the risk of lung damage to the small pet, but because it can also carry in parasites such as mites much more readily than paper bedding (though this is largely the case when the producer is not one of the "big name" bedding producers).

When an author's work is edited or revised to align with pet industry interests, it is an insult to the author - again, Sue Fox is a wonderful writer and her work is largely VERY good advice.Also, due to the fact that she is a veterinarian and writes about a large variety of species, she is not able to specialize in any one - whereas Donna Anastasi, author of GERBILS, is president of the American Gerbil Society.I'd suggest reading both books together, and pulling the best information from that cumulative effort. ... This book is a must read for anyone who is considering acquiring a ferret, or who has recently acquired a ferret and has questions about how to care for, feed, and keep their ferret safe.There is a lot of information crammed in this small book.My family was new to Ferrets when we purchased this book and it has really helped us become comfortable with our new ferret and how to keep him happy and healthy.

One of the better "small" ferret books.
Ferrets are my kind of people. This is my kind of ferret book. It puts lots of good information for the new and experienced ferret owner. It is well organized and presents the information in an entertaining manner. Just a plain good read for a ferret lover and especially good for the person considering sharing their life with a ferret friend.

ONE OF THE BEST PET OWNER'S BOOKS AVAILABLE ON FERRETS
Having been involved with keeping ferrets as pets, raising ferrets, watching ferrets, giving ferret advice and simply admiring ferrets for more years than I care to mention, I can truthfully say that this is one of the best overall, generally useful and most informative book for ferret owners that I have read.It is geared to the individual who has one or more ferrets for pets.

The Animal Planet Pet Care Library is a good, all around series and this little book is no exception.It covers, in some detail, the care, feeding, handling, socialization, housing, medical care and maintenance of these wonderful little animals.

The author does go into a nicely done natural history of ferrets and gives us a wonderful section of description including color variations, verbal communication and body language (very important if you want the most enjoyment out of your pet).I particularly liked the section of ferret physiology and the section giving advice on picking and choosing a veterinarian for your animal.The book is filled with wonderful photographs which are a delight within themselves.The text is concise, not too technical, and completely readable.

For the pet owner, I cannot think of a better book on the subject.There are many, many books on the subject of ferrets out there (goodness knows I have most of them), but this one is certainly at the top of the heap as far as usability goes and certainly in that position for the pet owner.
