Product Description
Third Generation Wireless Systems, Volume 1: Post-ShannonSignal Architectures offers you an in-depth understanding of thefundamental concepts underlying today’s most advanced wirelessarchitectures, with a special emphasis on physical layer techniquesand philosophies used in constructing interference-resistant wirelesssignals. You find in-depth coverage of a wide range of criticaltopics, including signal hardening, signal shaping techniques, signalexpansion techniques, and active receiver concepts and techniques.

A common theoretical framework is developed around the idea of apost-Shannon approach to designing communications systems. In manyways, modern wireless technology is pushing beyond the conventionallimits of Claude Shannon’s celebrated "communications theory."Topics like multipath fading and other channel phenomena are viewed ina new light – no longer as simply unavoidable sources ofdegradation, but as potential resources for additional information andsignal robustness.

This is the first in a series of leading-edge volumes onnext-generation wireless systems and technologies authored by GeorgeM. Calhoun. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good read for intuitive understand physical layer techniques
In many cases wireless texts are either a precis of one or more standards or the subject matter is presented as "stainless steel" knowledge devoid of contextual meaning. These have their place if you're a radio engineer but if you're also looking for an easy way of developing an intuitive understanding of physical layer techniques then George Calhoun's book may be more than useful to you. This may be one of the very few technical books you'll enjoy reading even at home.

5-0 out of 5 stars 3G Physical Layer Dynamite !!!!
This book focuses on the Physical Layer technology, describing the problems, parameters, strategies, and techniques employed for 3G and beyond. The text is VERY different from any other 3G book I have read (and I have read quite a few of them).I had been looking for a book that would describe or quantify the problem domain faced in wireless communications, and the reasoning behind the solutions that have been developed.I wanted it explained in conceptual detail that can be easily understood, without relying on mathematical equations to get the point across.Dr. Calhoun has done just that. This books reads like your sitting in his office and chatting with him.He continually provides superb insight to difficult concepts and uses plenty of diagrams to convey the material.

The text starts from the beginning, discussing the challenges that the "wireless" engineer faces, and then covers Shannon Theory, which he continually refers to throughout the rest of the book.Wireless system design is then covered from the viewpoint of the problems that need to be overcome by the wireless engineer. This then rolls into the physical layer strategies that need to be employed in 3G systems.

Dr. Calhoun spends quite a bit of time discussing the concept of "Signal Hardening" as a way to increase the efficiency of the available communications space.Topics include quantization, signal expansion, message space expansion, channel coding strategies, soft decision techniques, and diversity techniques.Every one of these topics is explained in illuminating detail.

Transmitter and Receiver oriented strategies are discussed, including compression, signal shaping, adaptive techniques, active receiver, equalization, RAKE receivers, and MUD.Finally, OFDM and MIMO spread signal technologies are addressed.

After reading this book, I feel I have a foundational understanding of the physical layer and Post-Shannon Signal Architectures. The writing style is very clear and engaging. There's no dobut this is best technical book I have ever read, and I am looking forward to the next volume in the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars All you ever wanted to know about wireless
Great book.

Is not intimidating with formulas and equations but gives you overview of the technology.

Gives good grasp of where it's heading

And no Shanon is still valid rather he is pointing out ways in which Shanon limits can be side stepped by moving around either in frequency or space or time

Also gives indictaion why rake recivers are so powerful.

This book will show you the overall technology, trend and implications. But if you want to learn how to design a 6 fingered rake reciever this is not it. ... Read more

Product Description
Mobile wireless applications are a good way to increase productivity, improve customer service and streamline business processes. 3G mobile applications, however, bring a unique challenge: ensuring adequate in-building coverage.??

Indoor Radio Planning provides an overview of mobile networks systems and coverage solutions for cellular networks in buildings. The background of GSM, UMTS and HSPA cellular systems technology are presented and form the backdrop of the main discussion as to why indoor coverage is needed and how it is best implemented. Basic passive distributed antenna systems (DAS) through to advanced fiber optic systems are discussed in detail, giving the reader a good understanding of all the available solutions. In addition, there is a section covering multi-operator systems, as this is becoming a more and more utilized approach. Other sections cover aspects such as how to upgrade passive DAS from 2G to 3G, noise analysis, link budgets, traffic calculations and software tools that can be used to provide help with creating in-building designs. These topics are examined at length from the basic considerations to advanced indoor radio planning.

One of the first texts dedicated solely to indoor radio planning, it will be of essential reading to engineering and planning personnel working for mobile operators, with the book being written with radio planners in mind throughout. Indoor Radio Planning will also be of interest to companies who service and manufacture equipment for operators such as suppliers of indoor coverage systems and vendors of base stations for mobile coverage.

  • A unique, single-source reference for both the theoretical and practical knowledge behind indoor radio planning??
  • Written by a leading practitioner in the field with more than 15 years of experience??
  • Based on real life examples and implemented systems and results

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent practical book
I havn't read the whole book yet, but I use some parts of the material in function of my interests. This is an excellent practical book about a topic that is rarely developed in any book (if any) and that you have to learn the hard way.You receive directly real-life examples and real designs that you can apply in your RF engineer work.I recommend strongly this book.I know the book seems expensive, but you can acquire good knowledge in RF indoor design, which should ease your work.My only question is:when a book about tunnel RF design (with time dispersion explanation, ...another topic never developed in any books). ... Product Description

Ultra-Wideband Pulse-based Radio lays the foundations of a new radio transceiver architecture, based on the Ultra-Wideband pulse-based radio principle. Instead of a continuous-time modulated carrier, the pulse-based radio system uses short electromagnetic pulses with a wide spectral footprint. This has considerable advantages for the reliability of a wireless link in an indoor environment. However, what is not accounted for in most high-level theoretical perspectives, is that a wide transmission bandwidth opens up a Pandora’s box of many complications at receiver side. A real-world wireless channel, for example, suffers from multipath reflections: multiple, delayed versions of the same signal arrive at the receive antenna and start to interfere with one another, an effect that is known as intersymbol interference. Also, a wide transmission band is a wide open door for in-band interfering signals, caused by other transmitters in the same frequency band.

Product Description

Since the 1960s, the existence of a largely noncommercial public broadcasting system has become a familiar feature of American cultural and social life. Most histories of broadcasting, however, overlook public radio's early development during the 1920s and 1930s by focusing on the mainstream, hegemonic practices of large commercial stations connected to networks. This focus on the development of the "American System" of commercial broadcasting as a master narrative has obscured the historical importance of alternative means of radio broadcasting and their complex interaction with dominant trends.

Employing extensive research from archives across the United States, Hugh Richard Slotten examines the origins of alternative broadcasting models based especially on a commitment to providing noncommercial service for the public. These stations, operated largely by universities and colleges, offered diverse forms of programming meant not merely to entertain but also to educate, inform, enlighten, and uplift local citizens.

Radio stations operated by institutions of higher education were especially significant because they helped pioneer the idea and practice of broadcasting in the United States. Faculty members in physics, electrical engineering, and other technical fields possessed the fundamental scientific knowledge and practical engineering innovation necessary for radio's propagation. Further, the established traditions of public service at universities, especially land-grant colleges in the Midwest, provided a robust framework for offering a publicly available, noncommercial alternative to the emerging commercial broadcast system.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Elegant Study of an Important Subject
"Radio's Hidden Voice" is a very elegant study of the rise and evolution of noncommercial public broadcasting that emerged in the early years of the twentieth century. Over time it has grown into a powerful system that has made broad and diverse contributions to America's cultural and social life. Little is known about this subject and this is a welcome addition to a thin literature on the role of the federal government, as well as state and local governments, to support a broadcasting network that received federal funding and was operated largely by universities and colleges. This approach allowed educational programming to reach millions in the United States, far wider dissemination than ever possible before. It serves as a useful corrective to the domination of commercial activities in any historical analysis of broadcasting. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Missing Chapter 14
The book in not an complete edition. At the end of chapter 1 and chapter 13 the author indicated references on chapter 14. However there isn't chapter 14 in this book, nor on the content list. The publisher has been committed to this mistake. However, they had found this just after they printed this book, but they decided not to do anything to make up their fault. This is a huge defect in this book.

About the content, the author tried to cover every moble comm. relative topics in this book. It could be understood how such task is difficault. However each topic should still cover a comlete treatment. The author failed in this way. Moreover, the author provided many facts and formula in this book but without further explaination and clear references. This is the second drawback regarding the content.

BTW, I rate the book with only one star because of such a bigdefect in publishing. Purely on the content I might rate with 3.5 stars thought the system doens't alowed half star to show up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Self-contained, informative, and almost complete
This is a well-written and well-organized book, which can be used as an introduction text to the area and as reference.

The book has a logical flow and covers almost all aspects of mobile radio networks: from propagation in the mobile radio environment and access methods to resource management, cellular planning, and mobility management. In addition, it contains very informative chapters on different wireless networks, including paging systems, cellular (voice) networks, and wireless LANs and WANs. It is important to note that the author considers both US and European standards, yielding a rather complete work. The book is not perfect: the careful reader will find some typos - which sometimes can be confusing, and a chapter on UMTS is missing.

The author presents the covered material thoroughly, yet delves into the details only when needed. Moreover, he provides a historical background, which can be helpful when attempting to understand certain design /system choices.

If you're new to shortwave radio, the chapters on propogation and receivers will naturally be helpful, but there's much more here than the basics. From identifying languages to obtaining QSLs from stations large and small to how to arrange your listening post, everything that a SWL or DXer needs to know is discussed.

There are a few things outdated (it was published in 1986, after all), like the Russian Woodpecker Radar System.Still, if you have a shortwave receiver and really want to get the most out of it, find a copy from a used bookseller and learn from the experts! ... Read more
