Editorial Review

Product Description
Older--and often economically depressed--industrial cities generally have a number of well located but abandoned industrial sites. Too frequently these sites are heavily polluted by the residue of toxic wastes dumped when old factories were still in use. These "brownfield" sites must be cleaned up under existing law before they can be redeveloped. And yet the question of who will bear the cost of this cleanup frequently stymies efforts to return these sites to productive use. A complicated net of federal, state and local regulations can involve several generations of owners in potential liability for the cleanup, frequently resulting only in extended litigation, not often in the cleanup of the site. In this book, Elizabeth Glass Geltman surveys the laws on both the federal and state level with regard to the cleanup of brownfield sites. The author makes valuable suggestions for reforming these laws that will help encourage land reuse and the accompanying redevelopment of the industrial base of many American cities both large and small.
Elizabeth Glass Geltman is Professor of Law, George Washington University Law School and is the author of many books on environmental law, including Modern Environmental Law: Policy and Practice.

Lots of kids think of running away from home. But what's a kid to do when his home runs away from him?

That's what happens to twelve-year-old George Honiker when his sister and brother-in-law move out of the Versailles Trailer Park while George is at school. Is it the end of George's world? Hardly.

Faster than you can say "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous," George bunks with his classmate Rennie Whitfield. Rennie just happens to be the richest kid in town -- a motorboat for his birthday, thoroughbred horses, a butler, really nice clothes. It's living the high life for George, and he's more than ready to have it all...but is he ready for what the Whitfields have in store for him? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A MIRACULOUS NEW WORK FROM STEPHEN ROOS
I don't know when I have enjoyed a novel more than my recent reading of Stephen Roos' brilliant new book RECYCLING GEORGE. Like Mr. Roos' previous book, THE GYPSIES NEVER CAME, he writes with a terse style and abundant wit that make the sensitive issue of a child's abandonment all the more keenly felt and understood. The character of George is so believably complex: plucky and unlucky, passive and angrily defiant, brave and scared all at the same time. George trying his hardest to make the best out of the terrifying moment when he returns to his trailer park home to discover that his family has abandoned him and taken the trailer with them. How young George comes to terms with this abandonment reminds one of the resilience and humor of the young hero of J.D. Salinger's Catcher In The Rye. Like Salinger, Roos understands a boy's heart and knows how to reveal this heart to us through humor and searing honesty. Roos' writing style only continues to grow in power and simplicity with each new undertaking he attempts-making him one of the truly great authors writing about and for adolescents today." ... Product Description
If we could understand the scientific and engineering principles behind recycling, our ability to use reprocessed materials would improve considerably. If we could then apply those principles, our efforts to process and recycle waste would be significantly more efficient and cost-effective. Practical Handbook of Processing and Recycling Municipal Waste provides all of the information necessary for vastly improving the way we recycle materials. It first develops basic engineering and scientific theories related to processing and recycling municipal waste. The authors then show how the behavioral characteristics of waste can actually be predicted with some degree of accuracy, hence turning waste disposal engineering from a matter of guesswork into a science. From Europe to the United States to the Far East, humankind understands the need for - and the challenges of - recycling and reusing waste. This handbook is the guide to successful, efficient waste processing and reuse. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent material, but not enough of it for the price
The first 90 pages of this book are the best. They include an overview of recycling and issues, then go into some detail how the various materials (metals, glass, papers, etc) are recycled and re-used.This section hasmany interesting collected factoids ("Today's average beverage bottlecontains 30% recycled glass"), but they are not organized orsynthesized into a coherent picture.

The remainder of this 330-page bookis padded with less-useful and boring reference material: recycling laws bystate, recycling associations by state, and a list of references (books, articles, journals and web sites).

Overall I think the price is steep forwhat is essentially a 90-page booklet.

A more worthy book on (paper)recycling can be found in "Recycled Papers: The Essential Guide"by Claudia Thompson. ... Read more

Product Description
Recycling or the processing of used or abandoned materials for use in creating new products must become key parts of the equation for the Earth's continued sustainable development. At the present time, most developed countries are massively wasteful throughout almost all sectors of the economy ranging from energy use to consumer lifestyles. One of the main obstacles to conservation and recycling of resources is the lack in most countries of national mindsets encouraging such practices as well as the infrastructures to support their carrying out. This book presents important research in this frontal field. ... Read more

Product Description
A compendium of work by one of the most exciting and accomplished young architects to emerge on the international scene in many years.

David Adjaye's practice combines material inventiveness, creative clients, and modest budgets to produce a refined and comprehensive body of work. Adjaye was born in Tanzania, and his wide-ranging education, both cultural and formal, has allowed him to respond deftly to wildly differing projects, from urban contexts to elegant pastoral retreats.

The innovation in Adjaye's career is exemplified in his residential works for a wide variety of clients and budgets. Perhaps his best known projects are the houses he has created in a range of settings for people such as artist Chris Ofili and actor Ewan MacGregor, some of which have never been published.

This book is Adjaye's first monograph, and it documents thirteen of his most important projects, presented through descriptions, detailed plans, and photographs. There is also a series of "portfolios," visual essays that highlight the tactile, luminous, and luxurious nature of Adjaye's work, and a reference section. 430 illustrations, 162 in color. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars blossuming...
David Adjaye Houses: recycling, reconfiguring, rebuilding exhibits the overt of a blossuming architecture practice. The book is prefaced by "Negotiating Architecture" an original work written by post-colonial writer Stuart Hall as an integral presentation to this monograph of houses. The houses, nearly all in London, are mostly about their interiors, shown in a play of materials. The publishers, Thames & Hudson, took Adjaye's use of material a step further mimicking the look and feel of the facade of the Elektra house on the book's jacket. The dozen or so works in the book are punctuated by drawings and writings by Deyan Sudjic and Caroline Roux, as well as details that seek to capture the ethos of the relationship between space & form, information versus drama. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
"Although recycling has a long history, it is only relatively recently that environmental protection and waste management issues have come to the forefront of both public and political awareness. Outside the fields of expertise, generally little is known about either plastics or their recyclability.

As in the successful first edition, this book provides straightforward information on plastic materials and technology, including the options for recycling plastics, with special focus on mechanical recycling. It touches on all the major problems associated with recovering and recycling plastics at a level intended to be accessible to any reader with an interest in this field, whatever their background. It also looks at some of the broader issues surrounding successful waste management of plastics.

This new edition reflects the great strides that have been made to increase recycling rates worldwide in recent years. It considers the expansion of infrastructure in the UK to support plastic recycling and major achievements that have been made in gaining widespread public support and participation for recycling schemes; specifically the need to manage waste on an individual household level. Current issues surrounding council recycling of plastic bottles, and the practice of providing free plastic carrier bags by supermarkets, are also considered.

Biopolymers are expected to have a major impact on plastic markets in the future and therefore some of the issues of biodegradability versus recycling are expanded in this second edition, as is the wider context of life cycle analysis and legislation.

Key features...

  • Clear, easy to understand text
  • Written for a broad audience both within and outside the polymer industry
  • Good introduction to plastic materials and technology with useful illustrations
  • Explains recycling terminology, technology and material quality issues
  • Up-to-date information on the plastics recycling infrastructure and recent developments" ... Read more
