Editorial Review Product Description This engaging and accessible case study--of interest to those studying Congress, the policymaking process, or campaign finance reform--analyzes the contemporary policy making process through the lens of the recent effort to enact campaign finance reform. Written by two scholars who worked in key congressional offices as APSA fellows, Legislative Labyrinth offers an insider's perspective and fascinating insights that most other books on policy making do not. The book explores the many components of the legislative process: the use of unconventional legislative procedures; the role of policy entrepreneurs and issue leaders; the importance of political parties; and the impact that outside forces (such as the president, interest groups, and the media) have on Congress's internal workings. The book also considers the policy questions raised by campaign finance reform and why this issue generates such intense debate within Congress. Arranged by topic, the book complements textbook coverage and gives students a thoroughly rich view of the process. Customer Reviews (1)

Editorial Review Product Description A fresh look at the question of why charter reform failed in Chicago when it succeeded in other large cities across the country. Political scientists have tried to understand the failure of Chicago’s charter reform movement through simplistic paradigms developed in studies of other cities. Flanagan, however, argues that Chicago, like all cities, has its own political culture, the result of forces and circumstances unique to the area. Many factors joined to doom the charter—but most important, Flanagan suggests, was the preponderance of upper-class, pro-business delegates on the Chicago New Charter Convention. Under their leadership, the convention produced a charter that ignored the concerns of many of the city’s voters. Its defeat left the city an unwieldy mixture of localized taxing entities, virtually mandating the development of the Machine. |

Editorial Review Product Description Globalization, European integration, and social change have devaluated traditional social democratic policy instruments. This book compares and explores how social democratic governments have had to adapt and whether they have successfully managed to uphold old social democratic goals and values in the light of these challenges. This volume examines the policy measures of social democratic parties in government in a comparative framework. The authors focus on traditional social democratic goals and tools, in particular, fiscal, employment, and social policy, in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Denmark. They identify three policy patterns in social democratic governments: traditional, modernized, and liberalized social democracy and provide a comparative account of the explanatory power of the national context for policy adopted by social democratic parties. Finally, the extent to which social democratic parties have been able to use the European Union as a political space for social democratic governance and policy-making is examined. Social Democracy in Power will be of interest to students and scholars of politics, comparative politics, European studies and public policy. |
