Product Description
Patterns and Poetry: No Robes from the Lucy Truman Aldrich Collection, Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, is a beautiful and informative publication on the RISD Museum's collection of costumes for the Japanese No theater. This collection, arguably the finest in the United States, was assembled largely on the spot in Japan during the 1920's by Rhode Islander Lucy Truman Aldrich, sister-in-law of John D. Rockefeller, Jr. The 47 robes came to the Museum by gift and bequest from Miss Aldrich herself and represent all catagories ofNo costume.Four essays document the history of the collection, including Miss Aldrich's encounter with Chinese bandits; poetic allusion in the imagery of the robes; the traditional methods of making No robes; and the evolution of No costume over 650 years.Individual entries with color illustrations discuss each of the 47 objects. ... Product Description
Introduction from the Author

Rhode Island School of Design is like the Harvard of art schools. ThatÂ’s the line that almost every student at RISD has had to employ to soothe at least one family member. Once the skeptics get past the initial terror, they swoop in with the flood of questions. Yes, it is a four-year program that gives its students a professional degree. Yes, it will help students get a job doing what they love. Yes, artists and designers do need training because raw talent isnÂ’t the whole package. Yes, RISD really is considered one of the top art schools in America. No, students canÂ’t just go to Harvard, or even Yale, and expect to get the same quality of art education. Now weÂ’re past the pleasantries.

Ranging from majors in design to fine art, with concentrations in liberal arts, there is a major and program combination that will suit nearly every serious art student. The thing to keep in mind about RISD is that it will not be an easy ride. To give more perspective, think of it this way: one Freshman Foundations Drawing course lasts eight hours. During these eight hours (with a break for lunch, and whatever other break the individual professor may give), students are expected to stay standing up with focus on life drawing at the same level as solving complex math problems. Before they show up to class the following week, they are expected to do 15 hours of drawing homework for a group critique. One year of this class is required, with students earning three credits per semester for their hard work. Compare this situation with an Ivy League student, who goes to English 101 for a weekly total of 90 minutes, has perhaps five hours of reading and studying to do, and is also provided with three credits per semester. Obviously, the comparison is not quite so simple, but it does illustrate the tremendous time commitment and dedication that it takes to be a RISD student.

The same qualities that make RISD so difficult for students are also what make it a top art school. Professors are dedicated and professional members of their field who push their students to full capacity and prepare them for careers that will support them financially and artistically. The resources afforded a RISD student range from top of the line computer labs to specialized equipment only found in the field to the RISD Museum. Lastly, every part of the school’s environment, from academics to the social scene, pushes students to be who they are as fully as possible at the samet time enables them to make work that is personal and original. That is one of the reasons why RISD alumni are so successful. Aside from the weight of the RISD name and the tremendous skill range built up over the course of a student’s stay, RISD students are original thinkers and problem solvers and graduate to become leaders of their fields, not following standards, but setting them. When considering an art education and trying to decipher between another art school and the Rhode Island School of Design, the truly important question to ask is not, “Is art the best I can do?” but “How good can I really be?”

Product Description
Ever since their creation in nineteenth-century France, Adolphe Braun's photographic images have been uniformly praised for their beauty. Braun was a trained textile designer who initially used the nascent technology of photography to document the French landscape and architecture, traditional regional costume, animal breeds and husbandry, and the events and legacies of the Franco-Prussian war. Braun's opulent bouquets of flowers are at once lush, delicate, and richly tonal; his landscapes are breathtaking and immediate; his animal studies arresting; his war photos dramatic and unrelenting. He created thousands of visual souvenirs of pristine alpine sites and would ultimately become one of the first to reproduce works of art photographically for a mass audience. Although the creation of "fine art" was not his intention, Braun produced work that was (and still is) synonymous with superb technical and artistic resolution, as he sought to identify popular uses for the process of photography. Through Braun's provocative work, Image and Enterprise explores the origins of contemporary visual communication--from the evolution of photography to the means of dissemination to the public. The introductory essays give an overview of Braun's photographic enterprise, his use of new technology, and the political and economic climate in which his business flourished. Other essays examine discrete aspects of Braun's work in the context of contemporary social, economic, and cultural history. Published to accompany an exhibition at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Cleveland Museum of Art. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Adolphe Braun publisher of stereographs
Adolphe Braun was one of the biggest French publishers of photographs. The book gives a very good overview of the various activities of this important photographer, who started a publishing business. Adolphe Braun published many stereographs. The text does not pay much attention to Adolphe Braun and this popular Victorian invention. Not all information is new. Anne MacAuley mentioned the use of photography in textile and wall paper design by Braun in her book "Industrial Madness". Gisele Freund described the art reproductions bij Braun in her book "Photography and society". The design of the book is excellent ... Read more

Product Description
One of the ancient world's most beautiful forms of ceramic is today known as Egyptian faience. The ancient Egyptians named it tjehnet, meaning that which is brilliant or scintillating, and in their eyes it glistened with symbolic light. Although faience was made of common materials, especially quartz sand grains or crushed quartz pebbles, it nevertheless took on the splendor of gold or semiprecious gems. The creative variety was astonishing: from 36,000 faience tiles lining underground rooms in King Djoser's Third Dynasty Step Pyramid complex to tiny plaques for furniture inlay, from jewelry to statuary, from female fertility objects to perfume containers, amulets, inkwells, animal tomb gifts, mummy masks, and a host of other forms. This is the first publication to analyze fully the significance of faience in ancient Egypt, and to present the most marvelous examples of its creation. Under the skilled editorship of Florence Friedman, the world's leading scholars in the field--from the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Cleveland Museum of Art; the British Museum; and elsewhere--show how faience was used and produced, as well as its symbolic values and meanings. More than 150 pieces, drawn from public and private collections around the world, are reproduced in color and described in detail. This dazzling display looks at the origins of faience, and at its use in royal life, in daily life, and in connection with death and rebirth. Scientific data resulting from analyses of faience objects, a specially compiled glossary, and a comprehensive bibliography complete the work. ... Read more

A superb book, very informative and with wonderfdul and some greatly enlarged photographs.

I waited for some time to get my hands on this work. If you're interested in AE faience artistry - the pictures alone are worth it. A fine addition to the Egyptophile's library.
