Im assuming you did horrible on your essay due to grammatical errors you typed in your reply on this book. What a shame.I am a senior in college, and was able to use this source for a paper I did. This particular book is for elementary grade level students, and yet I was able to gain insight from it's pages. As far as the writer checking her creditials, maybe you should check...?All you have to do is type her name in google, and all your answers lye there.

I bid you good day... moron ( I mean that in the nicest way possible:))

1-0 out of 5 stars Zeus Juice
The way that I view this book is that it is not really intersting. I was looking for something that ahd more to do with Egyptians. It had more to do with juice. I really think that tis publisher needs to get her licensechecked to be a writer but hey thats only my opinion. Bye, Bye. Anyway Ireally don't think that this is important but you see I got this report andit gotta be done by friday the 26th. Well I dont wanna run up your time soI'll be seeing ya.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent read!
Our 8 year old daughter delights in these read aloud tales and I love how each story is structured. Each myth has three parts; 1. "About the story" which gives you a brief summary and then a list of the characters and help for pronouncing names. This part also lets you know how long the story will take to read aloud which is quite helpful when "Oh pleeeese, just one more!" arrives. 2. "The Myth" - these just roll off the tongue and are so enjoyable and easy to read. Having just read Tom Sawyer aloud, this was just a pleasure. 3. "A few more words" At the end of each myth there's a brief section which talks about the history of certain words used in the story and how they have evolved to current usage. We always read this section and either have an "Aha!" moment or marvel at how interesting it is. We are about half way through and are LOVING this book. It's like a warm glass of milk before bed...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Gift
I gave this book as a gift to a family that reads books aloud every night. The children are ages 8 and 10. The parents are educators. The family went through the book in 2 weeks and the parents have reported the book is "fantastic" The 8 year old has been retelling the myths to me daily!I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for grandparents and grandchildren
This is a marvelous book! I wanted my granddaughters to learn Greek and Roman myths since there are so many references to the stories and the characters in day-to-day media. If they knew more about the tales, I thought they could appreciate the references to them.

I first looked at the book to find out if the girls would like it and get anything out of it. As it turned out, I read it from cover to cover, and couldn't put it down. I had never had school or college classes in these subjects and I was mesmerized.

The plots are summarized at the beginning, which makes the stories easier to understand for people who have no knowledge at all of them. Also at the beginning of each myth is the amount of time it will take to read it -- making bedtime story reading more predictable. And, there is also a pronunciation guide for the names and some of the words, with brief explanations or definitions.

The stories themselves are fascinating, easy to read aloud, print on the pages is clear and not too small, and chapters are of reasonable length to tell a tale and maintain interest. After the end of each, there are short descriptions of words we use in modern times which originated from these myths and the language and culture of ancient times. These can be eye-openers, and have given my granddaughters and I opportunities for many discussions!

This was planned as a learning book. And, it's been a great teacher -- for the reader as well as the listeners!

5-0 out of 5 stars Classics for kids and parents alike
I have a 4 and 7 yr. old.The stories are above the 4 yr. old's head (though he does play mostly quietly and seem to somewhat listen, which can't be bad...I'd probably be surprised at how much he is learning from his seeming inattentiveness), but have been WONDERFUL for reading to my 7 yr. old.We started out with some other Mythology books from the library (including The McElderry Book of Greek Myths, which I highly reccomend for the illustrations), and we had also just been listening on a car trip to "The Story of the World: History For the Classical Child Volume 1" on CD (also highly reccomend...not as boring as it may sound) which on discs 3 & 4 recounted some Greek history and stories, at an age appropriate level. This was a wonderful precurser to our nightly readings from this book. That said, I am homeschooling my son, and all that is not necessary to enjoy this book on its own as simply some great stories to read. The stories are easier to get through than even some illustrated versions, as they are well written and broken into managably short chunks. My son looks forward to the stories, and is always begging me to read one more.At the beginning of each story, context is given, approximate reading times (most about 10 minutes), helpful pronunciation guides (that also remind you who the primary characters in the story are), and then at the end of each story "A few words more" that tells about words and idioms in our language that came from something related to the story (my son loves the connections he discovers...a great way to begin an awareness of roots of words.) Children can understand and relate to the emotion that is portrayed in the stories, while picking up new vocabulary and elegant speech painlessly from the context. This book does an excellent job of presenting the stories in a compelling, easy to understand, but not dumbed-down manner, that maintains the richness of the stories and enhances them with added context.I found the author's ability to illuminate the human emotion in the stories, highlighted when I read his version of Pygmalion and Galatea, which we had read other versions of.In other versions, Pygmalion came across far-fetched in his love for his statue creation, a seemingly silly fable, but in this version you feel the depths of Pygmalion's emotions, and come away feeling that there is much in the common human condition expressed in this story... the themes are brought out and the story becomes more meaningful.
This is a book I plan to purchase, as it is not one we will outgrow and likely return to and enjoy often. We are on our third time checking it out from the library...and I really don't want to give it back. There are many books I love, that I am just fine borrowing from the library, but this one I really feel is worth the investment to have around as a staple in our home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful family reading
I purchased this book for our family to read together. The stories are interesting and not too time consuming. The commentary at the end of the stories are informative, along with the definitions in the beginning of the story.I can't say enough positive things about how this book is organized and written. It has gotten by 7 and 9 year old daughters VERY interested in mythology.I also learn something from every story! ... Product Description
The ancient Greeks worshiped a complex group of deities, weaving their characters into timeless tales of love, heroism, and intrigue. Plays, poems, paintings, and sculptures commemorating these tales have survived for centuries. Even as world religions and scientific knowledge have evolved, bringing with them new beliefs and understanding of the world, the ancient Greek tales continue to provide a basic foundation for Western thought and sharp insight to the human psyche. Athena appeared in many Greek myths, having major roles in Homer s Iliad and Odyssey and in ancient plays dealing with justice and democracy. Born from Zeushead, she was a contradictory figure in many ways. She was the goddess of war and a protector of civilization. She was capable of being a good friend to humans, yet she could also be fiercely vindictive and hand out punishment to men and women alike without a second thought. Temples were raised to her throughout Greece, including the famous Parthenon. The city of Athens, a military power and cultural center, embodied the goddess for whom it was named. ... Read more

Product Description

Embracing the whole of ancient history and literature for more than two thousand years, the three volumes of the Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology provide a wealth of information on every significant figure mentioned by the Greek and Roman writers in the areas of history, philosophy, mathematics, the Arts, medicine, law, geography, architecture, and more. A full account of the works as well as the lives of the Greek and Roman writers is included. Painters, sculptors, and architects are treated at considerable length and an account is given of all their works extant or of which there is any record in the ancient writers. Care has been taken to separate articles on mythological subjects from those of an historical nature. Greek divinities are given under their Greek names and Italian divinities are given under their Latin names. The final volume contains chronological tables of Greek and Roman history, genealogical tables and a list of kings. The dictionary is especially useful for the lives of lesser-known writers. With contributors drawn from among the most distinguished scholars of the day the reissue of these volumes makes available once more an important and valuable work of classical scholarship.

A full, authoritative, and wholly engaging account of these endlessly fascinating tales and of the ancient society in which they were created.

From the first millennium BC until today, the myths have been repeated in an inexhaustible series of variations and reinterpretations. They can be found in the latest movies and television shows and in software for interactive computer games.

This book combines a retelling of Greek myths with a comprehensive account of the world in which they developed—their themes, their relevance to Greek religion and society, and their relationship to the landscape.

  • "Contexts, Sources, Meanings" describes the main literary and artistic sources for Greek myths, and their contexts, such as ritual and theater.
  • "Myths of Origin" includes stories about the beginning of the cosmos, the origins of the gods, the first humans, and the founding of communities.
  • "The Olympians: Power, Honor, Sexuality" examines the activities of all the main divinities.
  • "Heroic exploits" concentrates on the adventures of Perseus, Jason, Herakles, and other heroes.
  • "Family sagas" explores the dramas and catastrophes that befall heroes and heroines.
  • "A Landscape of Myths" sets the stories within the context of the mountains, caves, seas, and rivers of Greece, Crete, Troy, and the Underworld.
  • "Greek Myths after the Greeks" describes the rich tradition of retelling, from the Romans, through the Renaissance, to the twenty-first century.
Complemented by lavish illustrations, genealogical tables, box features, and specially commissioned drawings, this will be an essential book for anyone interested in these classic tales and in the world of the ancient Greeks. 250 illustrations, 120 in color. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Present!
I bought this book as a present for my boyfriend. I had checked on Amazon for a book on Roman/Greek mythology and for some reason this book didn't stand out to me, which is why I have decided to write a review. I saw it in a local bookshop and wanted to say to anyone else looking for a present on such a book that it is a recommended buy. There is five chapters to it - Early Greek Gods, The Olympians, Attendant Gods, The Heroes and Roman Mythology.

This hardback book is not too daunting a size with about 123 pages to it's name but it has over 100 images which really adds to it. There's still plenty of room for text as the book is 12" long. Bear in mind though that this book would act better as an introduction to the area rather than an addition to the library of someone who already has passed that introductory stage.

4-0 out of 5 stars Greek and Roman Mythology
This was not at all what I was expecting...I thought that I would be getting a book with just text about Greek and Roman mythology. What I found instead was a picture/coffee table book.It was a pleasant surprisemade even more pleasant by the fact that the text was not disappointing. Since I do not know much about mythology, this book is a great start for meand perhaps others wanting to more about the mythology that permeatesliterature and art.The pictures, art and drawings within are fun to lookat, if not sometimes misplaced, like instead of Artemis near the text thatspeaks of her, there is another drawing of a young male god. ... I love Mythology. Specifically Norse in this case.
This book, just had it all. Every god and goddess I cared to read about. It was compact enough to fit in my hand bag, (yes my hand bag is bigger than most...and yes I carry mythological encyclopedias a round....how embarressment. :p ) For any one interested in the ancient myths from norse, classical, or celtic, this book is a one stop wonder. if it doesn't have the info you need or want, it has enough to point you in the right direction. There's also info in this book, that for whatever reason I never found else where, such as on internet sites or text book.
Very in depth, easy to follow. a great read and a great purchase.

Greek, Norse, and Celtic Mythology are covered pretty thoroughly within these pages. The section on the celtic hero Cuchulain is one of the most in depth articles on him I have encountered.

The virgin goddess Artemis ruled the hunt, preferring the quiet wilderness to society. As an immortal, she lived a life mortal Greek women never could one that kept her away from men and marriage. Men (and women) who crossed the boundaries that protected her virginity were punished, often with their lives. But Artemis s boundaries also protected Greek women during childhood and childbirth. As a virgin warrior, women prayed to her to keep them safe when a husband could not. ... Read more

Product Description
Apollo was a god who seemed to be skilled at everything except love. He was the god of music and light, as well as a teacher of medicine. He told of the future and even transformed himself into a dolphin. As the son of the powerful Zeus, and a twin to the goddess Artemis, Apollo spent much of his time chasing the things he wanted. The one thing that always seemed to get away, however, was the woman he loved. One woman was turned into a tree just as he reached her, while another was murdered at his command for falling in love with another. Apollo played an important part in the Trojan War. A series of sports competitions, known as the Pythian Games, was held every four years to honor this god. ... Read more

Product Description
The seventy-two entries in this volume explore, among other topics, the history, geography, and religion of Greece, Plato's mythology and philosophy, the powers of marriage in Greece, heroes and gods of war in the Greek epic, and origins of mankind in Greek myths.Ancient Egyptian cosmology, anthropology, rituals, and religion--closely linked to Greek mythology--are also discussed. "In a world that remains governed by powerful myths, we must deepen our understanding of ourselves and others by considering more carefully the ways in which the mythological systems to which we cling and social institutions and movements to which we are committed nourish each other.Yves Bonnefoy's Mythologies not only summarizes the progress that has already been made toward this end, but also lays the foundation for the difficult work that lies ahead."--Mark C. Taylor, New York Times Book Review"The almost 100 contributors combine, with characteristic precision and élan, the arts of science and poetry, of analysis and translation. The result is a treasury of information, brilliant guesswork, witty asides, and revealing digressions. This is a work of genuine and enduring excitement."--Thomas D'Evelyn, Christian cience Monitor ... 1-0 out of 5 stars WORST SHIPPING IN THE WORLD!!!!!!! (read whole review)
I purchased the book on 12/16 and I have a five page report due 1/8. They send it two, TWO, weeks after I bought it on 1/2. They tell me it is going to come two weeks later. Now I cant even use it for my report. This is the worst shipping ever!!!!!!!!! I don't recommend buying from them when you have a fast report to do. I could of got it from ebay and got it three weeks faster. I recommend going to barnes and nobles for this book for a cheaper price and more efficiency. They also never respond to your emails so don't even try sending one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible...insightful...inspiring...
I could attempt to write a review of this work, but
it is so rich, satisfying, informative, and inspiring
a volume that I would rather quote from the back
cover, which seems to me to sum up the perfections of
this compilation.
"GREEK AND EGYPTIAN MYTHOLOGIES features seventy-two
articles, reproduced in full [in English translation]
with illustrations, from the acclaimed two-volume
MYTHOLOGIES. Written by distinguished scholars, the
articles explore a fascinating variety of themes and
topics. The section on Greek myth surveys mythologies
of creation, power, war, death, and sexuality; articles
on gods, goddesses and their cults bring fresh perspectives
to our understanding of religion in Greek societies. The
discussions of myth in Egypt are equally wide ranging --
from cosmology, anthropology, ritual, and religion to the
cults of Isis and the fate of the Egyptian gods from the
Middle Ages to the eighteenth century.
"The articles offer illuminating examples of the working
of myth in cultures past and present -- how we create, use,
and are guided by systems of myth to answer fundamental
questions about ourselves and our world: Where do we come
from? Who are we? How shall we live? What happens when we
die?
"Building on perspectives developed by such scholars as
Claude Levi-Strauss and Georges Dumezil, and drawing on
such diverse sources as the history of religions,
anthropology, archaeology, literature, and linguistics,
the contributors define a new approach to the study of
myth in society.Rather than simply cataloging gods
and symbols, the articles in MYTHOLOGIES explore the
complex working of myth in past societies and in our lives
today."

The "Introduction: The Interpretation of Mythology"
is incredibly rich and informative. It includes the
essays (never dry or dull! -- always extremely interesting
and inspiring) on: Toward a Definition of Myth. The

Interpretation of Mythos: Nineteenth and Twentieth-
Century Theories. Myth and Writing: The Mythographers.
Prehistoric Religion. "Nomadic Thought" and Religious
Action.
The essays in the rich Part 2 section on Greek mythology
contain such topics (which really interested me) as:
Myth in the Greek City: The Athenian Politics of Myth.
Philosophy and Mythology, from Hesiod to Proclus.Plato's
Mythology and Philosophy. The Neoplatonists and Greek
Myths.Greek Cosmogonic Myths. And these are only some
of the many.
The Part 3 section on Egypt contains such topics as:
Egyptian Cosmogony.Egyptian Anthropology.The Divine
and the Gods in Ancient Egypt.Egyptian Rituals.Death
in Egyptian Religion.Meroitic Religion. The Cults of
Isis among the Greeks and in the Roman Empire.Isis
the Magician, in Greek and Coptic Papyruses. The Fate
of the Egyptian Gods from the Middle Ages to the
Eighteenth Century. And that is the full list of
titles in that section.
All in all, this work is even more stimlating and
insightful than Robert Graves, and I would even put
it far ahead of THE LAROUSSE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF MYTHOLOGY,
which I also own and use. ... Read more
