5-0 out of 5 stars Replete with concrete advice, humor and spirit
"Writing the Great American Romance Novel" is persuasive because it is practical and beautifully written; one does not expect to shed a tear at the end of a reference guide like I did at the end of this book. Ms. Lanigan generously shares her significant experience in the field and leads her readers toward rewarding relationships with the novel itself and with publishers and agents. The Artist's Way

I like to think that I am a pretty good judge of reference materials having spent many years in academia, although I only have one other novel-writing manual. Having serendipitously stumbled upon this wonderful resource I am sure I will be satisfied with my writing-reference library for some time to come.

Ms. Lanigan refers to another one of my favorite authors, Julia Cameron; I think that if you like Ms. Cameron's work you will find Writing the Great American Romance Novel is "right up your alley".

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
I'm not a writer, but I do think it's fun to write and this book has helped me see how a romance novel would be pieced together, and what readers would look for.If you're interested in how to make a good romance novel, you should read this. :]

5-0 out of 5 stars Writing the Great American Romance Novel
If you've ever thought of becoming a romance novelist, Writing The Great American Romance Novel is for you. This book states that romance novels are still the best selling books in the world. Romance junkies are constantly looking for new material to feed their insatiable appetite.

Unlike other fictional works, romance novels follow a strict formula. Over time, through trial and error, writers have learned what works and what doesn't. Although I had always joked with my colleagues that romance novels had such a formula, I was really surprised at the depth of this reality. For instance, have you ever read a good romance novel where the hero and heroine didn't grow as individuals or get through some sort of crisis? How about a story about a balding heroine (cancer doesn't count) or a rude abusive hero? I'm sure we've all read bad romance novels where the characters have no likeability or the dialogue is bad.

Writing The Great American Romance Novel tells all the secrets of the best romance novelists on today's market. Moreover, the book serves as a step by step guide to creating and publishing your own stories. A must have for anyone considering any of the romance genres.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the BEST Romance Writing Books Out There!
If you saw my bookshelf you would be blown away at how many books I have on the topic of writing. Then, you would be even more flabberghasted at how many romance writing books I have.I don't know why I have so many.I think I got stuck in a mode of collecting them or something.

Most of the romance writing books aren't worth the paper they are printed on.They are usually lacking in some very important topics.Maybe they'll cover a romance novel's structure but leave out what you're supposed to do with the manuscript when you're finished. Many are outdated because the market does change rather rapidly.

When looking for a romance writing "how-to" book, consider the date it's been published. The newer the book, the better.Again, the romance writing market changes so fast that you need the most up-to-date information.

This book, next to the Complete Idiot's Guide to Writing Romance, is one of the best books on the topic out there.Catherine thoroughly discusses the topic without bogging down the reader with too-technical writing advice.(After all, there has to be a "creative" element.)

Most importantly, however, she goes into the aftermath of the novel. What to do with the manuscript once it's finished. No other book that I've read on this topic covers EXACTLY how to write a synopsis. Some books will cover how to write a query letter.Again, because you need to be up with the current times, most publishers like Silhouette and Harlequin are asking for a synopsis and three sample chapters.I've scoured books high and low to figure out how to write a GOOD synopsis and this is the ONLY book that covers it in detail.

If you can only afford one book on writing romance, GET THIS BOOK and forget about the rest. This book will give you all you need to get started as a successful romance writer.

Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, but some people can't read...
First off, to those of you who rated down because it doesn't have in-depth information on publishing -- LEARN TO READ!!!This book is NOT titled "How to Publish Your Manuscript" or "Making Connections in the Publishing Business"!It it's titled "Writing a Romance Novel".If you want more information about publishing, select a book that is clearly for publishing.Do not rate a "how to write" book down because it doesn't delve into the "how to publish" topic to your satisfaction.

My thoughts about the book -- short and sweet, because there are already plenty of reviews that cover most aspects of this book. This book takes on a simplistic style, targeting those who are fresh into wanting to write a romance novel. This book succeeds in it's mission -- to inform beginner writers and introduce them into the genre of writing a romance novel, with some introductory information on publishing to get you started into researching the market for your book once it's finished.

5-0 out of 5 stars Expert Advice
I have spent the week-end studying this book and can honestly shout EUREKA. I have found a book that gives me the editor's take on the publishing business. As a frustrated writer who has sent out so many manuscripts over a period of years this book was an eye opener. It explained matters to me in a way that was totally readable and enjoyable. I am going to employ all of the information found in this book to my manuscript under consideration and let you know how I got on.

A master class in a subject matter dear to my heart from a master.

4-0 out of 5 stars great for beginners
This book was very helpful for me as an aspiring author. The information on pacing and creating compelling characters would be beneficial to any manuscript, not just a romance.I also appreciated the coverage of the many aspects of marketing and publishing.
I've spent more time on my writing since reading this book than I have in the last five years.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good information
Writing a romance novelis something you can do in your spare time to keep your creativity alive. This book is a fun companion to that effort, covering most of the bases in an entertaining way. It never hurts to get lots of opinions, though. [...]

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Source for Romance Writing!
This book is extremely easy to follow, as the sections are broken down pretty well, hence the title. There is a bit of "fluff" - in other words, there are quite a few things that are common sense that I did not need to read in a book to know about. But the other stuff makes up for it. The sections are broken down into things like Characterization, Developing the Plot, Outlining the Story, etc.
I would recommend this book for an aspiring author (or authoress!) ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Can i get a refund?
I feel cheated. The title promises so much but doesn't deliver. "An Erotic Romance Novel" to me, is more than a lot of "sex" scenes and descriptions that are written the same.

I've read some steamy novels, and this one falls flat- no build up, kinda neurotic, and i feel stupid reading it in the entirety. But
i'm not one for not finishing up something. So i read this through in 2 hours. How can it not be that easy? The writing is very high schooler (if the high school kid knows about sex somehow), the book is bigger than most- with font as big to boot. Whoa!

Bottom line- erotic scenes and episodes need to be dispersed throughout the novel, with variety. "she kissed him between his neck, and he held her close while he went in her. She let out a moan, and she aches all over" gets old after the 3rd time in 3 chapters. And please, sex fitting of the name "erotic" is not a 3 paragraph "i come, you cum" type sessions.

Overall, it wasn't the worst i've read. But i love reading all genres. Erotic/ love novels are already deemed low in the reading intellect totem, and this book has done a great job oflowering the standard for this genre further.

5-0 out of 5 stars nclady
i loved this book, a great story yet a hot romance. didnt put this one down...

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it
I loved this book and couldn't put it down. Read it in 1 day. I wish they didn't label it "Erotic" because this book has such a sweet romantic story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good love story, "erotic" label slightly misleading
I was pleasantly surprised at finding this to be a darn good love story, and I am such a sucker for stories of true love. Justin and Ava, I really liked them. Yes, they have flaws, but they are so meant to be together. Justin is such a gorgeous hunk, every gal's dream guy, a little shallow but has a hidden depth. And Ava, a little shy and insecure, really blooms for Justin. Sigh.

It is so hard to find really good contemporary love stories and this one fit the bill very well. I was wishing the story could have gone on just a little longer, just so I could "see" them beyond the author's ending, good that is was.

It is almost a shame that a label of "erotic" got slapped on this book; that is misleading. I've read erotic books and this book was one that should never have been shoved into that category. The love scenes were touching, even poignant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sexy AND romantic
I had read and enjoyed Madison's first book of short stories, The Deep End, so I was game for a full length novel.LOVED IT!Briefly Yours is a sweet, thought provoking, and sexy look at one woman who's in the middle of truly embracing and learning to share her sexuality with someone special. The backdrop of an underwear design company also scored cuteness points with me. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Grammatically Incorrect
For an "Everything Guide" this book seems awfully light on information. Much of what is here is covered in more depth (and covered better) in other romance writing guides. And the authors commit some pretty glaring errors. For instance, on page 116 they claim that the sentence "Jane was listening at the door" is passive voice. That's just plain wrong. No wonder so many writers are confused about verb choice with "expert" advice like this floating around.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have
This is a must have if you want to write not only romance, but any genre.I have a whole shelf of books about the craft of writing, but this is the one I turn to for everything. It is for the beginner and for those of us who have been writing for years.
If you can buy just one book this year, this is the one.

4-0 out of 5 stars If you want to write romance novels, this is a must read!
How does an author get from the bottom to the top of the agent/publisher slush pile? There are many answers and most of them are included in The Everything Guide to Writing a Romance Novel.

Some multi-published authors may find that this guide includes information that they already know. But I'd bet that there are nuggets that they will find new and interesting. The novice author (and that is who this book is directed toward) will find it a comprehensive book filled with useful information.

Authors Craig and Hughes start with the history of the romance novel and then head straight into an in-depth discussion of the genre and the various subgenres. I found this section fascinating and clarified many of my thoughts on the subject.

The meat of the writing of a Romance novel is in the Basic Structure chapter and includes story arcs, plot points, hooks, setting, etc. The important question answered in this chapter is calculating word count. There isn't an author living (I suspect) who didn't start their career wondering how to do the word count.

The information is vast and the authors discuss most things in a concise but in-depth manner. They will help the reader through the subjects of critique groups, brainstorming ideas, targeting markets, grammar, sentence structure, openings, dialogue and narrative, character sketches, pacing, writing drafts and so much more.

This 305-page book, including appendix and index, is a reference book the Romance writer MUST have in their library. It will save you time. And time saved is time spent writing that Romance novel.

Armchair Interviews says: A must-read, must-have reference book. ... Read more

Product Description
"Clothilde." He spoke the name on a breath like a prayer. Then he lowered his head and kissed her.

Her heart is lost in that first embrace, her world is shaken to its foundations. There is just one problem; her name is not Clothilde. It is Siriol de Calendri. Trained in the art of illumination in the far-off city of Venice, Siri is directed by her late brother's will to the county of Poitou in France, where she enters the guardianship of her brother's friend Sir Triston de Brielle. Once in Poitou, Siri hopes to find employment in an illuminator's shop - until Triston unexpectedly snatches her heart away with a kiss.

Triston is a man of quiet honor and courage, but the guild he carries for the death of his late wife, Clothilde, has left him numb and hesitant to love again. Worse yet, Siri bears an uncanny resemblance to his lost love. Or does she? Her merry laughter and twinkling eyes are very different from his late wife's shy smiles and quiet ways. Yet when he gazes into Siri's face, all he sees is Clothilde.

Then Triston's past returns to threaten them both. Will his tragic life with Clothilde be repeated with Siri? Trapped between the rivalry of the king's sons on the one hand and a neighbor out for vengeance on the other, Triston realizes it would be safer to send Siri away. But how can he bear to lose her again?

Siri is determined not to be cast off and not to live in another woman's shadow. She has illuminated many a priceless book with pen and paint. But can her own vibrant spirit illuminate the darkness in Triston's soul and make his heart beat for her alone? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Medieval Novel
The will of Sirol de Calendri's late brother directs her to go to the county of Poitou, France, where she enters the guardianship of her brother's friend, Sir Triston de Brielle, who snatches her heart away with a kiss.

Triston carries guilt for the death of his late wife, Clothilde, and is hesitant to love again, especially since Siri looks like Clothilde. However, Siri does not act like Clothilde, because Sirol has a merry laugh and twinkling eyes.

Triston finds himself trapped between the rivalry of the king's sons and a neighbor out for vengeance. Siri will not live in another woman's shadow and refuses to let the man she loves cast her off.

I love the fact that Joyce tried to make this book as accurate as possible when including historical events. She even included a glossary of Medieval Terms at the back of the book. There is plenty of action, and it kept me on the edge of my seat many times.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Heart-Melting Medieval Romance
I loved this author's first book, Loyalty's Web, but Illuminations of the Heart was truly superb. I was hooked by the first line, and in love with the hero by the third page. Ms. DiPastena masterfully wove drama, romance, intrigue and adventure into a thoroughly-researched medieval story that includes some real people and places in history. I highly recommend this page turner that will stay with you long after the story has ended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not your typical romance
When Tristan sees his new charge he is shocked at her resemblance to his deceased wife. Sri is beautiful and deeply in love with Tristan but she wants to be loved for more than her looks. Tristan must let go of the past if he is to find happiness and love in the present.

Joyce DiPastena is a master at painting a word picture of the setting. This is not your typical romance. It has depth in plot and character. DiPastena mixes conspiracy, mystery, vengeance, political jealousy, wit and love in just the right amounts to create a book that will please readers. I enjoyed this book too much. I stayed up half the night finishing it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Exciting Tale of Love and Political Intrigue
Illuminations of the Heart is an exciting tale of love and political intrigue. Ms DiPastena paints a vivid picture of the time. Her attention to detail in regard to Medieval garb, food, and politics is enough to give an accurate view of the time without being "textbook-y" or overly descriptive. She touches on several practices and beliefs of the time that are horrifying but refrains from getting too in-depth, thereby retaining the power that love possesses in all time periods. While this book is commonly described as "sweet"--and it is indeed sweet in regard to love scenes--I think there is enough reality present to keep one from thinking the time period was all fluffy romance and fantasy.

The characters, I felt, were believable, likable, and well-developed. We got a sense of Triston's feelings of guilt, his regret and his frustration. Siri's personality was strong without being the overbearing female so many authors seem to think a strong woman should be. She knew what she wanted almost from the start and when faced with opposition, she did what most people do: she made rash decisions. I found her to be quite realistically portrayed.

The story takes us from Siri's arrival at Triston's home, to his enemy's home, and to the palace of Duke Richard, a future King of England. There were no parts that felt choppy or out of sync. The story flowed along what felt like a natural path leading up to the HEA for Triston and Siri. Not to say there are no twists or surprises. But that is something you will have to find out for yourself.

Overall, I think this book was entertaining, well-researched, and a definite keeper. I am particularly pleased that the love scenes are not detailed and the main characters do not hop into bed together at the first opportunity. In fact, if you are looking for a book with sex, this is not the book for you. Everyone who enjoys the romance for the romance, give Joyce's books a chance. She does not disappoint.

4-0 out of 5 stars Medeval Romance at it's best
Joyce delivers another great romance set in an entirely different time period from. And you know what? I learn new words from those time periods every time I read her books! In this book, the reader will learn what an 'illuminator' is and no, it's not someone who lights fires.

I enjoyed this story from the beginning, especially Siri; she's feisty and smart. I rooted for her through the book and really wanted her to get her man. And dang it Triston! I can't say any more about that person...
Joyce's book is smart and full of 'clean' romance, sword fights, bad guys, mystery and castles.

3-0 out of 5 stars Unpolished but promising
While looking for a romance/erotica, I choose Ana Otis' `Trashy Novel - Book 1' because of the cover. Normally, this genre's covers feature model-like people with perfect bodies who are engaged in an oh-so-sensual embrace, trying to lure the reader into `pick me, pick me'. Otis' cover stood out and I liked that. I was intrigued.
I was also intrigued by the first paragraph of the book. The opening line is a brow-raiser, but unfortunately, Trashy Novel is like bad sex; a promising start, soon dwindling into a weak performance. Worse - there is no climax because I couldn't make myself finish this book. I was just that turned off.
Granted, the few sex-scenes are beautifully erotic, but the repetitive turmoil between the characters is extremely distracting. The author goes into great lengths describing each character and his/her past and current problems in chapters which are designated to the individual character. That wouldn't be such a bad idea, if those chapters wouldn't be so repetitive, and at times, just plain badly composed.
In the acknowledgments, the author thanks her editors. I have to wonder if those editors were professionals or just proof readers. Trashy Novel has the potential to be a real gem. It is obvious that Otis pored her heart into her writing. It's just a shame that the failure of polishing this book prevents it from shining.

Rebecca Lerwill is the ward-winning author of the romantic thrillers Relocating Mia and The Acronym - White Nights of St. Petersburg. Her reviews are available on Amazon, Goodreads, Facebook, and Authorsden.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed it Tremendously
This was one of the best black gay novels I've read in a very long time. It was exceptionally well written and the subject matter was very diverse. The situations that the characters were caught up in were so real to the African American gay experience. This book was also very entertaining and had what I call "shock value".Much applause goes to Ana Otis. I am looking forward to her next novel.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Misleading
I read the first page of this book and decided that I would enjoy it.Wrong, Wrong, Wrong. The first page was the only good page.Book sucked.I don't know what book the other reviewers were reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sensational!
Trashy Novel is a sensational, entertaining, well-written book; especially for leisure reading.

I actually got annoyed when I had to put it down to take care of my daily responsibilities and activities.

I appreciate how the author depicts the raw reality of life through the characters. I was able to identify with some of the lifestyles of these characters and relate it to my life and to people I know. It definitely stimulates the imagination!

I am anxious for Trashy Novel 2 to come out- I have referred this book to everyone I know to read.

Thumbs up to the author!!This gets a five star rating from me.

Product Description
The romance novel has the strange distinction of being the most popular but least respected of literary genres. While it remains consistently dominant in bookstores and on best-seller lists, it is also widely dismissed by the critical community. Scholars have alleged that romance novels help create subservient readers, who are largely women, by confining heroines to stories that ignore issues other than love and marriage.

Pamela Regis argues that such critical studies fail to take into consideration the personal choice of readers, offer any true definition of the romance novel, or discuss the nature and scope of the genre. Presenting the counterclaim that the romance novel does not enslave women but, on the contrary, is about celebrating freedom and joy, Regis offers a definition that provides critics with an expanded vocabulary for discussing a genre that is both classic and contemporary, sexy and entertaining.

Taking the stance that the popular romance novel is a work of literature with a brilliant pedigree, Regis asserts that it is also a very old, stable form. She traces the literary history of the romance novel from canonical works such as Richardson's Pamela through Austen's Pride and Prejudice, Brontë's Jane Eyre, and E. M. Hull's The Sheik, and then turns to more contemporary works such as the novels of Georgette Heyer, Mary Stewart, Janet Dailey, Jayne Ann Krentz, and Nora Roberts. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Circular reasoning
Pamela Regis' book, A Natural History of the Romance Novel, is a remarkable example of circular reasoning in literary analysis. She sets up a very specific definition of the concept "romance novel" -- namely "a work of prose fiction that tells the story of the courtship and betrothal of one or more heroines."

In Chapter 4, The Definition Expanded, she then narrows this definition by defining eight aspects which she perceives as necessary to the form:Society Defined, The Meeting, The Barrier, The Attraction, The Declaration, Point of Ritual Death, The Recognition, and The Betrothal.

It should be noted that in this context, she presumes that the "betrothal" will occur between the hero and heroine, thus eliminating from the "romance novel" category an immensely popular work such as Anthony Hope's 1895 The Prisoner of Zenda, which followed the trope of love between hero and heroine sacrificed to the more imperative needs of honor and duty.

Given these tight limits on what the author is willing to consider to be a "romance novel," she focuses on tracing the form from Joseph Richardson's 18th century epistolary blockbuster, Pamela, through Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, and other selected 19th century authors, picking up Georgette Heyer in the first half of the 20th century, and continuing through Janet Dailey, Jayne Ann Krentz, and Nora Roberts.

From the perspective of the historian rather than the literary critic, the major deficiency of the book lies in its lack of attention to authors who, in their own time, were blockbuster bestsellers. While she explains why Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca and Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind do not meet the criteria she has adopted for being "romance novels" (Chapter 5, The Genre's Limits), she still ignores completely quite a number of writers who were, in their own day, multi-title blockbusters in the romance field, such as George Barr McCutcheon, although devoting a full chapter to his contemporary E.M. Forster's 1908 A Room with a view.

A better title than "Natural History" of the romance novel would have been "Literary Analysis" of the romance novel.

2-0 out of 5 stars It didn't add much....
As a long-time fan of this genre, I expected more from this book. However, it was too academic, spent too long on only a few authors and didn't add anything to my understanding. The author spent quite a bit of time reviewing plot details and I admit that I enjoyed her analysis of Nora Roberts and Jayne Krentz books that I had read, but there was too much detail and repetition.
There must be better books out there....and I'd love to read any suggestions.

5-0 out of 5 stars No pride, no prejudice
A landmark.Professor Regis has finished the job Jane Tompkins began with _Sensational Designs_ and Janice Radway continued in _Reading the Romance_.Couldn't be an easier read, balanced but sympathetic, and interesting even if you haven't read the book she's discussing. Not the last word by any means, but there'll be no getting the genie back into the bottle now. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This time it's tangible.
With this book, Saunders has really treated our bodies with a healthy dose of the type of inner-chuckles you just can't find at any [...] been-there-done-that web venue. After a decade of touring as a backup jammer with seasoned Philadelphian blues group Linkin Park, Alan has finally stepped out onto Solo Street. Track 7 will have you wondering who broke the synths with an overturned can of TAB, while Track 8 will have you tapping your toes to what can only be described as the slickest cover of "Scarborough Fair" your mother never let you hear.

I know 20 people who will find this review helpful if they know what's good for them.

This book is AWESOME! It makes a great paperweight, an awesome booster seat, or a vicious projectile to ward off home invaders! I've even seen some people display it to add a little flavor to their home decor. What more could you want?! How about tens of tens of free paper pages, included free of charge? Oh, you heard right. You won't ever have to worry about running out of toilet paper again. Or bird cage liner. Or parade confetti. How can so much practical value be so affordable?! Only one easy payment of $18.fiftywhatever?! It's a steal.

NOT TO MENTION the hilarious artwork, OR the opportunity to own a piece of seven-year old niche internet culture history, OR the soothing aroma of freshly pounded papaya.

It also provides an unflinching look at the perils of pursuing publication and deconstructs a published romantic suspense book, “You Only Love Twice,” by Lori Wilde (focusing on theme, synopsis, turning points, scene and sequel, etc).

Finally, the book defines terms and answers frequently asked questions, provides tips and worksheets to make the writing process easier, and focuses on the details of the authors’ writing journeys and what they learned over several years.

Product Description

If there's a spanking scene to be found in Poughkeepsie, Lupe Freeman will find it; with the sophisticated Diana Stratton as her mentor, the precocious prep school girl hits the Ivy League determined to supply herself with a dominant boyfriend by Thanksgiving break. Susan Ross, now 23 and ever the darling of Anthony Newton, begins her career at an ad agency while irreverently recording her ongoing spanking adventures in a diary. Her growing passion for Anthony, fueled by jealousy, leads her to commit several errors of relationship etiquette, which cry out for and receive harsh correction. Back in Random Point, polymorphosly perverse Alison Albrecht engages in her first spanking love affair; but will the quite amiable gentleman be firm enough to tame her waywardness? Conversely, hyper-critical husband Ambrose Bartlett pushes perfectionism a little too far with his independent bride and almost outsmarts himself.
Love, liberty and the perfect spanking scene come to all deserving girls in Volume Eight of Shadow Lane.

About the Author:
In Random Point, everything is linked to spanking and this is true for the author of the Shadow Lane novels as well. Eve Howard has been writing and producing spanking erotica since the 1980's. Eve has written, directed and produced over 140 spanking videos. Female-friendly and designed to make people feel good, rather than guilty, about being into spanking, Eve suggests an irreverent alternative to the all or nothing B&D subculture portrayed in such beloved classics as The Story of O. Many spanking fans have discovered the real life spanking scene by following the same patterns of social networking as described in the Shadow Lane novels. And for almost twenty years, Eve's company Shadow Lane has been one of the primary social organs of the real life spanking scene. There are nine titles in the Shadow Lane series and Eve is currently working on Volume 10. She lives with her husband Tony Elka and their three cats in Las Vegas. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A surprise inside!
Until last week, I had never read a historial novel. Honestly, I can't even remember the last time I read any kind of fiction book, much less a Christian romance. My reading tends to come from the 'business' and 'Christian' and 'self-improvement' sections of the bookstore.

But, through an odd coincidence, I happened to order "Refining Fires." And I am glad I did. Ironically, last night, I saw Clint Eastwood's new movie "Hereafter," and if you have seen or read about that movie, you know how three lives ended up neatly intersecting at the end. "Refining Fires" was similar in that author wrote stories about four lives (in three sections of the book), then converged them at the end. And not to spoil Clint's movie, but I have to tell you, the ending to "Refining Fires" was a lot more satisfying than that of "Hereafter"!!

So, whether or not you are an avid reader of historical, Christian, fiction books, I think you can count on this book as one you'll enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Are Some Wounds too Deep to Heal?
Sometimes, a person has been wounded so badly that they build a wall to keep everyone out. That's when God often sends someone with the strength to scale that wall. In her book, Refining Fires, Erin Rainwater pairs two such characters. Resistance reigns and sparks fly until it seems there is no hope for a resolution.

The author draws on her own experiences as a nurse who served during the Viet Nam War and cared for wounded soldiers to create this tale. She has crafted a story that speaks to the physical and emotional scars of one such injured veteran and the woman who dares to reach out to him with compassion, mercy, and love.

The second phase of this three part story tells of a young girl with a physical handicap who confronts her uncertainty and fear to save the life of her mother.

The satisfying conclusion of the book tells the sad story of a young woman who has a bruised and battered heart. She finds a healing balm to soothe her broken spirit.

Erin Rainwater cleverly weaves three stories into one with characters that face real life weaknesses and overcome them with strength that comes from the most unexpected place.

5-0 out of 5 stars REFINING FIRES....A Beautiful Story!
This is the most beautiful, most heart-touching collection of stories I've read in a long time and they will stay with me forever!

The first story begins when Clare Canterbury applies for the position of Home Nurse which she saw advertised in a newspaper. She had 3 years experience as a military nurse caring for wounded soldiers returning from the Korean War.She was also an employee at a hospital in Denver where she cared for other soldiers as well as President Eisenhower after he suffered a heart attack. But unfair circumstances have left her homeless and without money. She really neeeded this job.

The interview starts out well enough but ends in disaster.Ultimately she secures the job by trickery.

As the story progresses Clare does wonders for Peter's body, soul and spirit.Peter believes God is punishing him but Clare tries to explain that God doesn't punish His children for sins Jesus already paid for.He does discipline, though, like any loving father.Peter tells Clare that God can: "...keep his love and His discipline..."But during a Thanksgiving prayer that's been forced on him, Peter is under pressure to say something. He begins a half-hearted prayer comitted to memory as a child then suddenly stops, realizing it isn't working. He then began anew and addressed God in a prayer that was five years in coming.

Through his growing love of Clare, Peter begins to think back over conversations he and Clare have had regarding God.For Peter, Clare represents the unconditional love that God has for Peter because she was able to look past his horrible wounds and see Peter from the "inside".This entire revelation hit Peter like a ton of bricks and he learns a valuable lesson that his relationship with God was truly "refined by fire!"

The second story opens with 9-year-old Susannah who is blind and her ill mother, Ellie Carver.Ellie is gravely ill with pneumonia, and Susannah realizes she must make the terrifying journey down the mountain alone and into town to get the doctor. That journey is only the beginning for Susannah, who must then wait out her mother's illness with strangers, not knowing whether her mama will live or die. After witnessing her mother having a horrible coughing fit and seeing doctors and nurses rushing from every direction toward her Mom, little Susannah is frightened beyond belief and runs down the hallway and bumps into a man in a robe who listens to her story and speaks very kindly to her and tells her: "I'll pray for your Mama, Susannah".Little does Susannah or her Mama know that this chance encounter with this kind man will turn out to be the best thing that has ever happened to them. You will be totally blown away by the rest of this story!

The third and final story introduces us to Miss Duchene who is admitted to the hospital after a car accident.Miss Duchene is a very angry woman who is uncooperative and throws a few tantrums, then decides to escape the hospital on her own. During her escape, she finds herself in front of the windows to the baby nursery, and what she discovers there will change her life forever.Once again, you will be blown away by what happens.

Refining Fires is a book that you MUST read!!It's a book that will stay with you forever and remind you that no matter what your circumstances, God is ALWAYS there.Even when we think He is silent, not listening and not responding, trust me, HE is there as He has always been from the beginning.I've never been one to be stumped for words before but this book has done just that, I simply don't know what else to say except PLEASE READ THIS BOOK you'll love it, you'll be touched, you'll be hooked from the first page to the last page, and will be sad to see the end come. This is a book you'll want to read again and again and share with your friends and family.I hope Ms. Rainwater will pen another novel such as this one!Just a beautiful, beautiful book all round.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Inspirational Book Guaranteed to Touch Your Heart
In "Refining Fires," author Erin Rainwater breathes new life into Christian fiction with her wit, humor and intelligent expositionalstyle. This book departs from traditional romance storytelling in a unique and charming way. It's definitely an investment of time and money well spent. Cheers to new Christian romance publisher, Torn Veil Books, for seeing the value of these three separate yet seamlessly interwoven stories tied together with the timeless threads of faith, hope and love.

I personally dislike reviews of books where major plot points are divulged, inadvertently or not. However, it's not giving away anything to say that main characters in the first story, Peter and Clare, leap off the page and into the heart and mind of the reader. The characters are sharp and smart, the dialogue sparkling. The action never lags in this Beauty and the Beast story, the longest of the three, with a disfigured post-Korean War hero and the disgraced, desperate woman who applies for the position as his nurse.Peter's irascible and bull-headed, and he's met his match with sassy Clare. She'sjust what the doctor ordered for his heart as well as his physical frailties, if only he'd let down his guard long enough to admit it. The humor in the story is infectious and welcome, and the secondary characters add dimension and are well-drawn.

In the second story, you'll cheer as young Susannah makes a treacherous journey alone to find help in order to save her mother in spite of a considerable handicap and impossible odds. You'll be touched by the unbreakable bond of love between a mother and child. In the third story, a woman who has always depended on her beauty and charm discovers the greatest love of all from a surprising source.Peter and Clare make appearances in these last two stories in unique ways, and it's truly like revisiting old friends.

So many Christian books focus on the angst and drama in life. "Refining Fires" offers the perfect balance of elementsfor anyone seeking a great read. Erin Rainwater doesn't shy away from the message of God's love and the hope He offers. This book will resonate in your heart long after you finish the last page...and leave you wanting more. I wholeheartedly recommend it, and can't wait for her next book!
