5-0 out of 5 stars Thirty corners of Heaven
This is one of the most beautiful garden books I have, and hands down my favorite.Wandering through its pages refreshes the soul and is the best antidote for stress I know. These thirty gardens run the gamut from the almost wild to the clipped not-a-blade-of-grass-out-of-place and are all enchanting.

The gardeners' descriptions and gardening philosophies are interesting to read along with Mr. Beale's comments, and non-guilt inducing (always a plus in a garden book), but the photographs are what make me keep this book by my reading chair. I'd swear you can hear the bees and smell the air!

Give this book to your favorite gardener.

1-0 out of 5 stars Most of the Photos Are Boring
Most of the photos are not of the "garden", but only the plants, plus a lot of the pics are not sunny enough to be pleasing. There are only a few worthy interesting "garden" scenes. The book's inside flap's description, therefore, was too misleading.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book by Two who've done Better
Anyone who has seen Vivienne Russell's book on Monet's Garden knows that this photographer is capable of capturing the spiritof a garden - the way it looks and feels. She has an eye for light, detail, nuance, composition. So when I ordered this book, I was expecting to be equally wowed. But I wasn't.

Much of this is because Monet's Garden at Giverny is in a class by itself. It is, perhaps, less a garden than a living, breathing three dimensional piece of art.I know as a photographer that when I photograph a garden, it is usually the case that I must move through the garden judiciously and figure out exactly where to stand and what to look at if I am to capture it at its best. But at Giverney the opposite is true.Stand in any spot and look in any direction and you will find a perfect shot. This explains much of the gap.

Yet I know the discrepancy is more than this, because one can find photos with noticable photographic flaws in this book - mostly blown highlights. So part of the blame lies in the photography. That said, the photos are generally first rate and they are blown up large and reproduced well, all this giving us a better view of rose garden vistas than we can get anywhere else.

In delivering these vistas itfills a niche that few books attempt. And it does so very well.It describes how to build gardens with roses; how to use them in all sorts of ways other than lining them up like so many wooden soldiers on a review field.

In some ways I prefer Tony Lord's Designing with Roses. It is more about the language of design expressed in rose language. And its photos are more colorful.Butto see real gardens and to hear them being discussed by their owners and one of the best rose authorities writing today is a great and rare asset. There is no other book that tries to do this. And this one does it very well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Visually stunning book
This is a visually stunning tour of rose gardens throughout Europe and the United States.Beales interviewed the owners and describes their gardens in glorious detail. The photographs by Russell are equally beautiful. This is a beautiful book that gardeners and rose lovers will love to have in their library. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars From the Author
Thanks for your kind interest in this book!I consider "The Old Rose Informant" to be the capstone of my nearly two decades of work on Old Roses, bringing the reader to a wonderful realm of roses and rose-lovers, a realm where no other book reaches.Presented here for the very first time, in English, are the complete basic works of the master rosarian Jean-Pierre Vibert, touching on the complete range of his era's roses, rose-culture, and rose concerns, including his fascinating observations, sage theories, and sharp controversies. Further chapters offer other lengthy excerpts from other noted rosarians of the old rose era on such topics as rose-shows, pruning, grafting, raising roses from seed, nomenclature, cross-breeding, and more. A major part of the book is comprised of the author's original and pioneering research on the origins and progress of many of the most important groups of old roses, such as the Damask Perpetuals, Chinas, Teas, Noisettes, Bourbons, Hybrid Perpetuals, Pernetianas, and others, covering new ground and rewriting our understanding of rose history and development. This is a book not only for the old rose specialist who wishes to gain deeper understanding of the old rose era, but also for the armchair gardener who will enjoy the literate prose, acuity, humanity, and wisdom of Vibert and his colleagues as they shape rosedom's budding progress! ... I recently moved into a house with a yard and a variety of trees, vines, and Roses.I have read large gardening references before in attempts to prune planter box trees and gardens, but never walked away with the sense that I could actually prune and train my plants successfully. This book began with definitions of terminology, tool selection, and provided clear text and multiple helpful drawings and pictures all geared towards the intelligent adult. It addreses the unique properties of the various fruit trees, rose bushes, vines, and shrubs, and gives advice as to when to hire and how to choose an arborist. It helped me understand the impact of pruning and has made me a more educated 'tree' observer.

I cannot see myself ever needing to buy another pruning book!I would highly recommend this for complete and straight forward pruning guide. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars From the Author . . .
When I began studying Old Roses seriously, in 1983, I found that, in order to do my work efficiently and to achieve valid results, I needed to have at hand a complete and accurate listing of them, including their basic data such as correct name, synonymy, breeder/introducer, date, classification, parentage when known, and some indication as to the basic color--all of this for all the old roses known to rose culture before 1920--not just those grown today, not just those the legends of which live on though the varieties themselves might be extinct--but *all* of them, obscure or famous, still here or long gone.No such listing was then available, no such listing had ever been available.I decided to make one myself. As my researches developed, I assiduously kept revising this master list to reflect the progress made such that it can be said that none of my books has received more continuous attention than *Old Roses: The Master List*.Researchers and students of old rose history will find that this book paves the way to a much clearer understanding of the complicated and knotty--but always fascinating--world of Old Roses. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book- practical and inspirational
Mr. Taylor has written an unpretentious yet gorgeous book about roses. He writes eloquently about roses, from old garden to quite modern, with frankness and candor. This is not a man who is writing for a buck or a trend. The photographs are gorgeous, the suggestions for settings and companion plantings are wonderful, and he mentions flaws (awkward growth? disease? thorniness?) that other sources do not. I subsequently took a number of his suggestions and exercised them. It's particularly good for people who want or have spaces for a few roses, and would like to avoid mistakes, as opposed to the collector who has hundreds of roses and can afford errors. Very highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for selecting old roses
This little book (paperbound and measuring only 8"x5") is a very good tool for selecting old roses for your garden. The author is from England so you might want to consult other books to see if a particular rose will grow well in your region. However, the advice this author gives is highly worthwhile. He covers over 200 roses (arranged as "Bush" roses and "Climbing" roses) and devotes 2 lengthy paragraphs to each one. The descriptions are poetic and the author also suggests ways of using the rose in the garden (color schemes, etc.) Lists are included at the back of the book which notes roses by categories (colors, good foliage, shade, small gardens, scent, informal gardens, structures). Hardiness zone maps cover both the U.S. and Europe. The photographs are excellent and are mainly close-ups (although there are outstanding full garden shot photos in the introductory chapters). ...
