5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book is a great addition to a rug hookers book collection and especially for the new hooker :-) It gives detailed instruction on how to hook along with some history of the art, a section on how to tranfer patterns to your backing and dying lessons. It is a good all around hooking book.
She also has a picture gallery of rugs.

In rug hooking nothing is "old fashion"--Just diffrent taste. Once You learn the basics the sky is your limit.

Buk look out --like M&M's you may not be able to stop with one book--or with one rug--

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners
As a beginner I found this book very helpful. It should be in any rug hookers library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rug Hooking Reference

5-0 out of 5 stars A good library book -- for home also!
When I was a beginning hooker, I borrowed this book from our local library. It was so good, and helpful, that I did not want to return it.Especially helpful then (and now) was the leaves & flowers section and finishing the rug.I have purchased the book and refer to it often!

5-0 out of 5 stars must have for serious hookers
If you are a serious, traditional rug hooker, or want to be, this is the book for you. Joan Moshimer was trained in the Perl McGowen style of hooking, but went out on her own with a bit more wimsey. This covers it all, including dying intructions. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A little too country for me.
I have tried hooking rugs many years ago and wanted a refresher. This paperback book was fairly thin and the designs are all primitive~country. The book is devoted to many of the basics: wool fabrics, and cutters and hooks. Mostly a beginner's manual (thus the title, which I should have realzed) with delightful colored pictures of the projects. The designs are really beautiful classics in the world of hooked rugs. I rated it a 3 because 1. I hoped for more varied, modern, geometric designs. 2. The feel of the book was not substantial. 3. I found the book at another store for much less money.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Primitive Resource
An excellent resource for the beginner or seasoned primitive hooker. Simple instructions and patterns included.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent resource for beginners
I thought this DVD was very helpful for me being a new rug hooker. It shows nice detail on various techniques in rug hooking. I really enjoyed how to hook circles, turning a corner and following a curve line.

4-0 out of 5 stars good reference book
With family roots in Waldoboro we've been familiar with this art form all our lives.Have visited the State of Maine Museum when their collection ofWaldoboro rugs was on display. It's amazing how many forms the sculpted rugs take, how many styles -- from floral, traditional, a leaning toward interpretive, etc. This book pulls together in one place the common knowledge and information available about the genre.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Rug Hookers
This is a wonderfully illustrated, well-written book that all rug hookers and/or Maine history lovers should own! The writing is interesting, informative, and "hooks" you right away!I thoroughly enjoy owning this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars NOTE: This is a DVD!
In spite of how it may appear on this page, this item is NOT a magazine or book! It's an instructional DVD. Contents include: Getting started and how to pull loops, Loop height and skipping holes, Loop direction, Straight and diagonal lines, Staggering ends, Hooking shapes, Hooking squares, Points and triangles, and Hooking circles. It shows great closeups of the different techniques so you can see exactly what he's doing.

While this DVD compliments "The Rug Hooker's Bible", it is in no way dependent on it - you can easily use the DVD only, without the book. This is Volume 1; there is obviously a Volume 2 as well which is sold separately. ... Read more

Product Description
This fresh and scholarly look at a century of rug hooking in Maine demonstrates the significant role non-woven rugs have played in American decorative arts. True Waldoboro rugs are explored in detail and the myth of "Acadian" rugs is explained. Edward Sands Frost manufactured preprinted burlap rug patterns in the mid-19th century that spawned competitions across the country. By the 1880s, summer visitors helped organize cottage industries that turned Maine's rug-hooking talents into income producers. The Arts and Crafts movement in America led to new and exciting styles of rug patterns in Maine, and by the early 20th century, artists pushed the craft of rug hooking in to a fine art, with Marguerite Zorach's designs among the prominent examples. This lavishly illustrated book has over 250 color photographs that highlight the extraordinary story of rugs created throughout Maine and eastern Canada, including popular maritime designs by men of the seas. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Rug Hooking In Maine
Well-written, detailed, interesting and nicely illustrated. This may have more information that most rug-hookers want, but it would be fascinatingto those interested in the beginnings of rug hooking.

5-0 out of 5 stars comprehensive history and study of all aspects of Maine hooked rugs
As Peladeau shows, the field of Maine hooked rugs is surprisingly complex. It's certainly more involved and more fertile than ones who know it simply as a category of "Maine hooked rugs" realize. The field is given complexity and richness by different periods, rug makers, regions, and skills. The author brings all these elements out by an uncommon depth of research sustained by an intertwined personal and professional interest. She lectures on aspects of the topic, has organized exhibitions, and collects research materials on it.

Peladeau finds, for instance, that in the 1859 Maine Charitable Mechanic Fair, three rugs were exhibited. But she goes beyond this fact to relate what it says about the field at this moment in its history. That only the few rugs were exhibited indicates "that interest in rugs had waned somewhat..."; and even more, that the small number indicates that interest in rugs at the time "was centered in the Portland area" and other crafts such as quilts and shell box work had come into greater favor. Such continual details and commentary on what they tell about Maine hooked rugs makes for not only informative, but engrossing reading on the field.

Hooked rugs continue to hold appeal for many collectors and others in the antiques' field because they are a genuine folk art with old Maine and New England associations. Rug hooking was a traditional skill passed on to young woman. Hooked rugs served practical and decorative purposes in homes before surviving ones became desirable collector's items as homes became modernized and the frontier and Victorian tastes and skills they represented passed away. This comes through in Peladeau's text where she relates how rug hooking originated in particular places and spread to others; in her portrayals of individual rug makers or hooked-rug businesses; and detailed descriptions on how the rugs were made, which in some passages are specified to the point of reading like how-to instructions. But the visual matter especially imparts the folk-art aura of hooked rugs which makes them perennially appealing. The diary entries, the old pamphlets, the period photos of woman rug makers and old shops where they were made impart a feel for the combination of ordinariness, industriousness, and inventiveness distinguishing folk art. The many photographs of the farm animals, birds, flowers, patterns, and borders of hooked rugs all in varying degrees of primitive style impart this essential quality of such rugs too.

Peladeau's book is for collectors and the like looking for a discriminating understanding of Maine hooked rugs. The rugs always have an appeal for their folk-art appearance and association with Americana and traditional New England crafts. But for readers whose appreciation is enhanced by knowledge of weaves, recognition of regional variations, awareness of stages of development, and the like, Peladeau's book is for them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ground breaking history of Hooked Rugs of Maine
This bookis a serious study of Maine's Rug hooking tradition. It is well researched and the stories flow easily and informatively. Color photos and paper quality is excellent. Worthy addition to any American textile/rug library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rug Hooking in Maine 1838-1940
I just received this book and initially thumbed through it.I almost sent it back - based only on the pictures of old rugs.I am so used to books based on contemporary rugs that my first thought was that these old rugs were somehow dull, but when I slowed down to read the history I had second thoughts.I started from the beginning of the book and read through it then studied the pictures. It is a wealth of information and an asset to any serious traditional rug hooker's library. ... “There is something about quilting bees and rug-hooking klatches that make for wonderful works of art....Mather has captured the spirit—and the how-tos....The real value is the promotion of a much-loved art for contemporary society.”—Booklist. Pore through a gallery of color photos of rugs, and then use these patterns to make your own. A complete primer fills you in on preparing the fabric; “stitches” and loops; and more.
Amazon.com Review
Hooked rugs add more than color and warmth to a room; theylend a great deal of charm. In the hands of a skilled artisan they maybe rendered in great detail and with subtle patterning, but even anovice can accomplish a nice-looking project with a little practice. Agallery of delightful rugs sets the stage here, depicting everythingfrom fruits and flowers to teapots, cabins, roosters, and dancingbears. The instructional section explains the supplies and generaltechniques, from preparing the strips of wool (thrift-shop finds are agreat source of material) to color planning and dyeing your ownwools, and, of course, the hooking process itself. The specificproject section is a bit too brief (only three projects are presentedin full) and the pattern section somewhat vague (it consists only ofcolor photos of six designs and the line-drawn renditions thereof),but the primer of general techniques is certainly thorough enough toget you started if you're keen on the craft. --Amy Handy ... Inspired by the seascape, the people, and the long rug-making traditions of the communities of the Atlantic coast, Deanne has adapted some of her favorite motifs to create practical, pictorial hooked canvases-Kissing Fish welcome mat, Old Rose oval rug, Coastal House chair pads, Dancing Women rug, and more.

She provides the basic hooking instructions and tips on choosing the right backing (burlap or linen), gathering fabric (silks, wools, velvets-or just about anything else you can cut into strips), and binding the edges. She also provides templates for each of the 33 projects and instructions on transferring and positioning the motifs. Scattered throughout the book are inspiring photographs of Fitzpatrick's many award-winning rugs, her stories of traditions that inspire her work, and insider's tips for shortcuts and techniques. The whimsical, folk-art-style designs range from simple to more complex and will appeal both to beginners and experienced rug hookers. The technique is simple, and the materials are few and easy to find.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wrong wrong wrong
There is a fundamental error in the instructions contained in this book. The instruction on preparing to hook on the last paragraph on page 22 are clearly wrong. If strips were cut the way they are instructed to be you would end up with a small square not a long strip. The measurements, both imperial and metric, do not make sense.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Beautiful book with lots of great images of some really wonderful rugs and mats.Lots of great info and ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great rug hooking book!
This is just a wonderful book.I very much enjoyed reading Deanne Fitzpatrick's narrative of the way her life in the Canadian Maritimes has influenced her work. The photographs are excellent and show the detail of the work.Even the recipe for the Oatcakes (page 42) was great!

This book is an inspiration for experienced rug hookers, and has good basic instruction for the beginner.

I also enjoy reading Deanne's "diary" on her website [...].The integration of personal philosophy, art and creativity all come together in an remarkable way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Some very familiar designs and text~~~
Lots of repetition in Deanne's books. This one is almost identical to an earlier one, even using the same text. Repetition is common in many of her books, so one must watch for this. All in all everything she does is noteworthy, and easy to understand , but sometimes repetitious.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful designs
These hooked designs are wonderful--really unique. Not at all like the typical traditional patterns you usually find out there. The colors and shapes are bright and bold and each pattern tells a story. I love the author's way of working, too. There's no right and wrong way. She lets each design take you where it wants to go. So inspiring! I can't wait to make my first rug! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Primitive
Simply Primitive is another cogently written work by Pat Cross. The book will inspire and guide both the novice and the experienced artist of the primitive style. There are many original designs with patterns for you to create your own works of art.Pat tells you where she finds her inspiration and how she creates her designs. The book is beautifully illustrated with color pictures of the wools and the tools Pat uses, and encourages you to select what "works for you".I am a rug hooker and have selected 2 of her designs which will be winter projects for me ... Quilted Cats [the cover design from an antique quilt] and Cat Birds [this is done in 2 just colors ! with an amazingly effective border].Pat shares several Punchneedle designs, but I am intrigued most by the Needlefelting and suspect I'll be working with roving this winter as well. With her clear and detailed instructions, you can even punchneedle and/or needlefelt parts or the whole of her hooked rug designs. And, if you have not bought Purely Primitive ... buy both of these books; you're in for a treat. ...
