Product Description

Russia is the world's foremost energy superpower, rivaling Saudi Arabia as the world's largest oil producer and accounting for a quarter of the world's exports of natural gas. Russia's energy reserves account for half of the world's probable oil reserves and a third of the world's proven natural gas reserves. Whereas military might and nuclear weapons formed the core of Soviet cold war power, since 1991 the Russian state has viewed its monopolistic control of Russia's energy resources as the core of its power now and for the future. Since 2005, the international news has been filled with Russia's repeated demonstrations of its readiness to use price, transit fees, and supply of gas and oil exports as punitive policy instruments against recalcitrant states that were formerly part of the Soviet Union, striking in turn the Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, and Lithuania. Orban reveals for the first time in Power, Energy, and the New Russian Imperialism Russia's readiness to wield the same energy weapon against her neighbors on the west, all of them former Soviet satellite states but now EU and NATO member nations: the three Baltic nations and the five East European nations of Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Slovenia.

Orban shows how the Kremlin since 1991 has systematically used Russian energy companies as players in a concerted neo-mercantilist, energy-based foreign policy designed to further Russia's neo-imperial ambitions among America's key allies in Central East Europe. Her unprecedented analysis is key to predicting Russia's strategic response to American negotiations with Poland and the Czech Republic to host the US missile shield. She also reveals the economic and diplomatic modus operandi by which Russia will increasingly apply its energy clout to shape and coerce the foreign policies of the West European members of the EU, as Russia's contribution to EU gas consumption increases from a quarter today to three-quarters by 2020. Orban proves that Russia's neo-mercantilist energy strategy in East Europe is not at all dependent on the person of Putin, but began under Yeltsin and continues under Medvedev, the former chairman of Gazprom.

Product Description
The end of the Cold War saw an unprecedented number of countries changing economic policies at the same time. One result has been the emergence of a new field of economics, postcommunist transformation theory. Written by prominent Russian analysts, the essays in this book discuss the economic policy problems that confront postcommunist countries. Most chapters focus on liberalization of the exchange rate and trade system, macroeconomic stabilization, and institutional reform. They also look at various policy options that have been pursued and their results. Underlying the book is the assumption that the transition to a market economy is both irreversible and the best path to sustained growth in Russia. ... Read more

Product Description
First published in 1980, this book offers a contemporary account of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (CMEA), the regional institution overseeing East European economic integration at the time. The author pursues three main themes in analyzing the sluggish pace of East European integration on trade, the role of East-West relations in the integration process, and the future of integration in the 1980s. Firstly he maintains that the integration process was delayed because of the confused postwar situation and disagreement among leaders of the region over a common economic programme for reconstruction and sustained growth. Secondly, he argues that the postwar development strategy and central planning of the economies inhibited regional cooperation. Finally the author contends that the organization and policy guidelines of the CMEA fell far short of what would seem to be needed to further integration. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I landed a better job right away!
When I was in the process of changing jobs, I bought "Scripts for Winning Jobs" by Natasha Cooper. This practical book with CDs had everything I needed. I particularly liked the simple and easy to follow scripts for every stage of a job search. It taught me exactly what to say and HOW to say it from the first phone call to salary negotiations. It answered several questions I had about salary negotiating strategies that I could not find anywhere else.
Working with the "Scripts for Winning Jobs" and practicing with the four CDs helped me feel confident on interviews. I practiced the parts of the book that related to my occupation and personality and learned to phrase what I wanted to say simply and effectively.
I got very inspired when I received several offers after the very first interviews. Shortly after I landed a better job!
"Scripts for Winning Jobs" contains lots of scripts for different professions, so you can find the one related to your background. I highly recommend this book to job seekers.

5-0 out of 5 stars In this time it is my lifeguard :-)
This is the last book on job search, interviewing and career advancement I'll ever buy. Finally with this book and CDs I stopped being scared of job interviews. I know ahead of time what questions to expect and how to respond to them putting my best foot forward.

Now, having rehearsed all stages of a job interview with "Scripts for Winning Jobs", I feel confident and I understand what I have to offer to the prospective employer. I know how to negotiate and what questions to ask to make sure it's a good fit.

Product Description

How might Russia and Eurasia attract private investment and trade from the West over the next several years, and what conditions in Russia and Eurasia may Western investors and traders expect? In this unprecedented volume, leading American experts and policymakers and their Russian and Eurasian counterparts survey economic prospects for the region and assess its important resources and institutions.

The book begins by examining the overall trade and investment outlook in Russia and Eurasia. It then takes up critical sectors: energy, aerospace, automobiles, agriculture, and telecommunications. It turns to current institutional impediments to trade and investment such as problems in corporate governance, the banking system, and the rule of law. The final chapters look to the future and assess the prospects for economic reform, the movement to join the World Trade Organization, and the impact of political dynamics in the region.

The experts are joined byGeorgian President Eduard Shevardnadze and former Russian Prime Minister Yegor Gaidar, who in their forewords acknowledge not only the crucial importance of trade and investment for the future but also the necessity of bringing the integrity of institutions up to international standards.A third foreword by the former chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Congressman Lee H. Hamilton, stresses the place of commerce in economic growth and in the integration of Russia and Eurasia with the world community.

Product Description
The subject of self-management - of companies in which the decisions are made by the work force rather than by the managers or owners - has long been of interest both to economists and to a wider audience. In this 1984 book Saul Estrin offers a comprehensive survey of how workers' self-management has influenced industrial structure and the allocation of resources in Yugoslavia, where a system of this type has operated since the 1950s. The book will interest economists concerned with the likely impact of workers' participation as well as specialists in self-management theory and the operation of the Yugoslav economy. ... Product Description
This book examines the instruments for decision coordination within and among the economies belonging to the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (CMEA). In light of the forcedeconomic adjustments of the early 1980s, Jozef van Brabant offers this study of the centrally planned economies and the inadequacy of their coordination mechanisms. He proposes that a resumption of faster growth depends largely upon increasing the pace of factor productivity growth--something that can only be achieved through structural change and a reform of the economic mechanism. ... Product Description
Based on extensive original research in the Republicof Tatarstan, in the Central Volga region of Russia, this book examines the economic development path followed by Tatarstan since the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Russian financial crash of 1998. It argues that the roles of global capitalism and globalisation are somewhat exaggerated in much contemporary academic literature. In the case of Tatarstan, a strong state role, tightly-knit local elite networks, and the inheritance of the Soviet politic and industrial systems are the most important socio-economic formations in explaining the region's development. ... Chris Ward uses a wide range of sources to examine key aspects of life on the shop floor of the Russian cotton mill.He reveals the existence of a complex world of work that grew out of the interaction between the experience of the industrialization in late nineteenth and early twentieth century Russia and the mechanization of the cotton industry in late eighteenth and early nineteenth century Britain. Product Description
Here the example of the Russian oil industry in the context of transition from a planned to a market economy is used to develop a three-stage framework for organisational transformation. Four longitudinal case studies of Russian oil companies are drawn upon to explain the process of organisational transformation. The book highlights how and why this process differs between companies within the same industry, explores the complexity of the change process and discusses the importance of the top management team. The links between organisational learning, dynamic capabilities and the implementation of change are analysed. An interesting insight into the constraints and enablers of organisational change is also provided. The framework developed from this study can be successfully applied to other organisations wishing to bring about organisational change. Integrating several perspectives, including a resource-based view, organisational learning, dynamic capabilities and top management team theory, this book will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of business and management, international business and organisational behaviour. ... Product Description
This book makes an important contribution to the current re-evaluation of the origins of Stalinism. Hitherto, Western scholars have focused on leading personalities to analyze the crisis of the New Economic Policy. Dr. James Hughes, however, examines the processes at work under the NEP from the regional perspective of Siberia. He looks at party-peasant relations, the kulak question, Stalin's patron-client network in the provinces, the regional impact of the grain crisis of 1927-28 and the use of emergency measures to overcome it. He concludes that Stalin's experience of conditions that were unique to Siberia accelerated his negative reappraisal of the NEP and initiated the descent into the cataclysm of his "revolution from above" in late 1929. ... In this book Kazimierz Poznanski offers an integrated study of institutional change in the Polish economy since 1971. He examines the economic peak of the communist phase, the decline of the system, and the post-communist transition since 1989.
