When it became an Olympic sport in 1900, the boats really were yachts, large boats with as many as 10 crew members. Over the years, though, the big yachts were gradually replaced by smaller, one-design sailboats that put the premium on the skill of the sailors rather than the inherent speed of the vessel. Results were determined by a series of seven races from 1936 to 1988. In 1992, the Soling class had six round robin races leading up to match races based on the round robin standings, and Sailboarding had a series of 10 races. All classes except Soling went to an 11-race series in 1996. The Soling competition consisted of 10 round robin races that year. In 2000, there were 16 races for the 49er class.

In fact, the word "jaght" means "to chase, hunt or pursue." But little did the Dutch know that their form of transport would become a sport. The transformation started in the mid-1600s, when the sport caught on with the British Empire, which changed jaght to yacht as we know it today. In 1851, the Hundred Guineas Cup a 60-mile race around the Isle of Wight marked the first international yachting event and the sport made its Olympic debut in 1896 in Athens. Extractions: OLYMPIC HISTORY But for inclement weather in Athens, sailing would have been among the sports to join the Olympiad from the start. However, Paris in 1900 is where it all began. Sailing is the holder of a unique record in Olympic history; between 1964 and 1996, Hubert Raudaschl, of Austria, competed in nine Olympic Games, more than any other competitor ever has across all sports. The nature of the sport is such that age appears no barrier to long-term success. Magnus Konow, of Norway, Elvstrom, and Durwood Knowles, of the Bahamas, share the record for the longest Olympic careers - 40 years - with Ivan Osiier, the Danish fencer.

Mosaics and drawings from Middle Eastern civilizations and Pompeii show man swimming in a dog stroke. Greeks held swimming in a high regard as well, so much so that men of the ancient times often considered others less worthy if they could not run or swim. A man was considered uneducated by Plato if he could not swim. But it was an 1844 race in London, England that displayed swimming close to what we know today. Thanks to England's Swimming Society, several American Indians were brought over for the race and dominated the competition using windmill strokes resembling today's freestyle. Despite the Indians' advanced style, the English still relied on the breaststroke - the stroke mainly used by Captain Matthew Webb when he became the first to swim across the English Channel in 1875.

Extractions: Sunday, September 24 Britons buoyed by top medal prospects Edward Gorman From Edward Gorman, Sailing Correspondent, in Sydney One week into the Olympic sailing regatta, the Great Britain team already have their first medal and are firmly in the hunt for at least three more. But sailing is a notoriously fickle sport with medals decided over up to 11 races, and Olympic history is littered with stories of yachtsmen and women who had glory seemingly well within their grasp only to see it slip through their fingers. However, all the indications are that we are about to witness a great week for British sailing and a medal count to rival their best performance at the Games since Melbourne in 1956 when Britain returned with a silver and two bronzes. With Ian Barker and Simon Hiscocks already certain of either the bronze or silver in the 49ers, the remaining hopes rest with Shirley Robertson, who holds a nine-point lead with just five races to go in Europes; Ben Ainslie, who is four points ahead at the same stage in Lasers; and Iain Percy, leading the Finn class after two races and looking every bit a gold medal-winner. Britain also have a good outside chance in the Stars where Ian Walker and Mark Covell are second overall after two races. The revelation of this regatta has been Robertson. A more hardworking and dedicated campaigner would be hard to find, yet success at this level has always eluded her. Her temperamental frailty has led, all too often, to championship-wrecking consequences. Eight years ago at Barcelona she was ninth in these deceptively complex single-handers. Four years ago at Savannah she was fourth after letting the bronze slip on the last day.

Extractions: home Spa Regatta since 1985 Since the first SPA Regatta in 1985, this Dutch event has become one of worlds best Olympic Sailing regattas with over 1500 participants from more than 50 countries. Back in the early eighties, SPA looked for an opportunity to transfer its image from a drink associated with illness to a drink placed in the leisure atmosphere and the sportive/free time surroundings. SPA decided to associate its natural products with the natural elements of sailing. That is why SPA decided to sponsor the Royal Dutch Watersport Union ( KNWV ), to become main sponsor of the Dutch Olympic Sailing Team and title sponsor of the new (to be created) event: SPA Regatta. This sponsorship provided SPA with the best possible marketing tools to achieve the desired image transfer. The federation provided the necessary authority, the Olympic sailing team the desired quality-exposure and the SPA Regatta the yearly platform for action-marketing, hospitality management and a yearly climax of all sailing activities translated in an international event in which all Olympic-, World- and European- and national champions take part. Some highlights After seventeen successful editions of the SPA Regatta, there are many highlights to mention. The Olympic Sailing Regatta is well-known for the various introduced innovations that were subsequently taken over by the International Sailing Federation.
