Extractions: Saskatchewan is situated in the central Prairie between Alberta on the west and Manitoba on the east. Its neighbour on the north is the North West Territories, and on the south it borders with the United States. Saskatchewan is rectangular in shapeit is the only Canadian province none of whose borders was determined by the landform feature like river or mountain range. The province is located in the Central Standard Time and doesn't switch on Daylight Saving Time in summer. The population of Saskatchewan is around one million people with the area of 651 900 km2. The northeastern part of Saskatchewan is a part of the Canadian Shield that was formed during Precambrian era and features some of the oldest rocks in the world. The border that separates the Canadian Shield from the rest of the province runs across Saskatchewan from south-east to north-west. This part of the province was formed during Precambrian era and contains igneous and metamorphic rocks. From the minerals found in that part of the Shield the most abundant and the most important for Saskatchewan is the metallic mineral uranium that can be used for building the nuclear reactors or exported to the other countries. The rest of the province, except for the extreme southwest which is occupied by the Hills, is situated on the Saskatchewan Plain which is a part of the Interior Plains that are, in turn, part of the Great Plains of North America. This part was formed under water when the mountains of the Canadian Shield eroded and deposited on the bottom of the shallow seas that it was surrounded by. The process was completed during the Mesozoic era. This part is relatively flat with gently rolling hills and occasional valleys. The most important minerals that are found in this area composed of soft and hard sedimentary rock are the non-metallic minerals like potash which is widely used as a fertilizer and some oil.

Extractions: ANALYTICAL METHODS IN GEOGRAPHY: INTRODUCING GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS This course introduces students to principles of analytic methods in geography through the application of Geographical Information Systems (GIS). Through the use of cartographic software such as PaintshopPro7 and MicroCam for Windows, specific GIS packages Arcview3.2 and Idrisi32, and the digitizing package CartaLinx along with data and examples from the www students will become familiar with a number of diverse applications. Remote sensing, data issues (structures, acquisition, preprocessing, management and analysis) and both input methods and output generation will be featured. Weekly labs, along with lectures and discussions, are essential elements of the student's experience. Along with Geography 332 and Geography 334, these courses serve to introduce students to cartography, remote sensing and data manipulation (technical aspects) within the broad disciplines of geography, earth science and computer graphics. Please note that Geography 338 and the field of GIS are integral parts of the university transfer programme (geography and geoscience majors), watershed management programme, natural resource management programme and technical illustrator programme. The successful completion of these courses will allow both physical and human geographers to better understand upper level courses, concepts and issues within the discipline.

Extractions: The Physical Environment - Fall Geography is a discipline that studies the earth and the events that take place on it. This course will introduce students to geography through examining the non-living materials and their properties on the earth's surface (geology), the physical processes responsible for landform development (geomorphology), and the day-to-day and long-term processes at work in the atmosphere (meteorology and climatology, respectively). In this way, students will become familiar with the focus and the approach of the physical geographer. Other topics (including natural hazards, biogeography and pedology) may also be examined as will a number of contemporary geographic problems. This course precedes Geography 203 - The Human Environment wherein the role of humans is stressed. These two courses serve to introduce students to both major fields of geography: physical and human and allows students to continue onto upper level courses within the discipline both at Medicine Hat College and other Canadian (and American) institutions.

Extractions: Research Interests: Environmental changes are evident in soil-landscapes from postglacial and older terrestrial frameworks alike. In places, they induced cyclically accelerated erosion and deposition that alternated with soil formation. Elsewhere, geomorphic responses may not be evident but overprints from modified soil-process regimes on older soil mantles are detectible. Patterns of landscape responses reflect landscape origins as much as changing bioclimatic attributes. I have studied these matters in western Europe, the US Midwest, SE Ontario and the Canadian Prairies, using the soil-geomorphic research approach. This is a blend of geomorphology, (paleo) pedology, stratigraphy, sedimentology, and geochronology. It requires a heavy dosage of field work apart from laboratory analysis.

Saskatchewan is bordered by Manitoba to the east, the Northwest Territories to the north, Alberta to the west and the US States of North Dakota and Montana to the south. Its landscape is mainly prairie, parkland, forests and lakes. Prince Albert National Park is the gateway to Saskatchewan's wilderness. Camel caravans might not seem inappropriate in some parts of Saskatchewan. One can find sand dunes 30 meters high and semi-arid vegetation in Athabaska provincial park. Nowhere else in the world are there dunes this far north. The whole province enjoys a hot, dry summer. Saskatchewan is temperate in the south with cold winters in the north. The highest rainfall occurs between April and June. Summers are hot and dry with long hours of sunshine, but winter temperatures are generally cold and snowy until early March, but sunny. Although Canada is officially bilingual (English and French), English is more commonly spoken in Saskatchewan. Research and development is evolving in Saskatchewan, thanks in part to Saskatoon's Innovation Centre. The province's technological potential in agriculture, space technology and biotechnology is growing rapidly.
