The target user group are eleven to twelve year old school pupils. The idea of a virtual environment for dramatic activities may seem contradictory, as noted by Danet and colleagues: In the past, we have always understood the "magic" of theater to happen in specially set aside spaces, in which a special form of communication between audience and performers sets off "sparks" of a unique kind. The very physicality of theater has always been a very important component of it. Indeed, some might argue that without the presence of the body, theater cannot exist (Barba & Saverese, 1991). The expression "virtual theater" is, consequently, an oxymoron, bringing together two contradictory elements in a manner which creates an explosion of new meaning (Danet, Wachenhauser, Cividalli, Bechar-Israeli, & Rosenbaum-Tamari, 1995, Computers and theatre section, para. 1). below Ghostwriter is also used as a story writing preparation activity in the same way as real life role-play is used in the classroom to motivate and inspire children to write. The evaluation of this educational goal is presented in Robertson (2001) and Robertson and Good (in press). The characterization techniques used in stories written after using Ghostwriter was compared to the characterization in stories written under normal classroom circumstances. The stories were compared using a new, fine grained analysis scheme for assessing childrens writing. The main result was that the stories written after the virtual role-play contained more indications of characters relationships, particularly as portrayed through dialogue, than did normal classroom stories. Expert evaluation of the role-play sessions and resulting stories supports the view that the virtual role-play environment is particularly beneficial to children with low literacy achievement.

This workshop began with Bill Chaloupka attempting to frame politics in Clayoquot Sound at the level of identity production. He talked about a "radically open or indeterminate field" of politics, within which multiple identities are constituted and enacted. From this perspective, politics ceases to be an objective field, but one which is always determined, to some extent, by the identities of the various actors and observers. Chaloupka pointed to the paragraphs which had been submitted on the subject of identity an authority, citing Laurie Adkin's discussion of the identity of "industrial worker," and Gary Shaw's observations about the absence, within the documents, of any positive identities available for First Nations. The discussion proceeded to address some of the issues surrounding the work of the Science Panel, considering "authority" as something involved in legitimating knowledge claims. Adkin noted that the invocation of science to settle conflict reflected a characteristically social democratic manoeuvre. Science had been introduced, and the problem had been defined as one of technicalnot politicalpossibility. A number of participants noted this shift in the debate, away from one of democratic discourse and toward one of what is objectively possible. That is, the democratic question of what should happen in Clayoquot Sound is superseded by the technical question of what, scientifically, can happen in Clayoquot.
